I love going to Wagshal's for my late lunch/ early dinner break. Sure the sandwiches are a bit on the pricier side, like $16 for tuna melt. And it was very crunchy due to over abundance of celery that gave it a rather astringent taste. BUT, the service is friendly, and the turnaround time was great! I loved the steak and cheese sandwich I got a few days ago using DoorDash and can't wait to try other items they offer. Their cake displays were incredible looking too. And the empanadas. Oh I better stop!

They keep expanding their offerings and increasing prices, yet so much of it is absolute crap. Been going here for 30 years. It's a sad state of affairs. I still go in for about 4 different things, knowing I'll pay too much, but that I'll like it. Anytime I try something new, or something I haven't had from them in a while, it's a total failure. $16 for an Italian sub? Fine, but better be good. Or at least edible. Yet, they included brown/grey salami on it. Major sign of epic managerial failure. They need to wake the f up, or they'll be burnt toast just like too many of their breakfast sandwhiches. I'm not giving up on them, but I'll be damned before I watch this place continue to spiral downhill without my adding my two cents.

    Pitiful Ruben

I wish I'd come here first to read the recent reviews. This is not the deli I used to stop in for sandwiches as a local undergrad. To be fair, it was more than 20 years ago - but that does not negate how awful it was today. My Ruben was lackluster at best. For $17 I expected the meat portion to reflect that price point. It did not. Then to top it off, the corned beef itself was just ok and there was waaaay too much sauerkraut for the amount of meat on the bread, throwing the sandwich proportions all Off. Just a really overall underwhelming sandwich. Very disappointing as I was looking forward to stopping in while I was in the area.

Hard and crunchy fries @6.05, not a deal.

I went and order fries and ask to cook them soft, not crunchy. When I received them and went back to work (only 2 minute walk), the fries we hard and very crunchy. This is the second review I have wrote about different issues at this place. And they charge 6.05 for the fries, my co-worker tried them and spit them out. I would say do better, but when you have the conversation first about your food and they still make it wrong. #nevergoingback

Been here before sort of a hit or miss with the prepared foods but I got the chicken empanada and the cucumber tomato salad with a side of pita chips. The empanada wasn't really good more on the doughy side and the flavor was eeehhh. The cucumber salad was good although the empanada wasn't great it complemented well with the salad. I know they have much more things to choose from and items I have yet to try.

Gourmet deli and market with a sandwich bar and decent wine selection in the Spring Valley Shopping Center. There are a few tables outside as well as a nice enclosed dining space in the back. It is our neighborhood go-to for breakfast and lunch sandwiches, prepared deli treats, and last-minute wine or appetizer purchases for easy entertaining. I much prefer the ambiance of this location to the one on New Mexico Ave. It has a comforting, neighborhood feel. The prices are certainly on the high side, but the selection is pretty upscale and it's not outside what you would expect for the area. Service can be mixed, but all in all I've had a positive experience with staff going out of their way to help out. My only complaint would be the organization of the store, which can make it confusing to know where to pick up and pay for things. For example, you can order sandwiches and pay at the counter across from the sandwich bar, but if your order includes a deli item you have to separately bring your paper order receipt over to the deli for them to know to prepare your item and then pay for your order at the deli counter (but don't forget to go back to the sandwich counter to pick up your sandwich). I think it's exacerbated by the arrows on the floor which indicate the direction of traffic (as a COVID precaution) but can be tricky to navigate in a small space. However, I appreciate the efforts made to help customers keep 6 feet apart so that's not something I mind. I also appreciate the easy curbside pick up they are offering right now. This review is mostly for the deli side. The market is in a separate space a few doors down. I haven't been frequently enough to review it, but have friends who come from outside the neighborhood to its butcher counter. It seems quite the institution.

I needed a steak for my son's birthday dinner. A good steak. At the same time, DC is freaking out…read moreover a coming storm. Supermarket shelves are emptied. But Butchers Alley was fully stocked. Great meats. Awesome cheeses. Prepared meals. Wines. The butcher was awesome. The cheesemonger incredibly helpful. I love this store. Whole Foods charged $12/lb and it was noticeably better. Same story with the short rib I got last month...almost half the price at Whole Foods and experienced better or the same quality. The funniest is the stock bones...$15 for a small pack. You'd need two to make any volume of stock, (so $30), and the same amount of bones would be $10 at the farmers market. I love supporting local places, especially high-quality butchers/groceries. I really do. But there comes a point when you have to ask if you're getting ripped off. With meats DOUBLE the price of another grocer that itself has a reputation for being expensive, it starts feeling like you're being taken advantage of. For what it's worth, the little old lady in front of me almost had a panic attack when they rang her up. I would've bought her groceries for her, but I suddenly realized that me buying a couple pounds of chuck roast and 10 marrow BONES to make stock with would already have me above $100. I saw another person put back cookies because after tax they were $7 each. Sorry, guys, but I'm out.

Lately, though, it just doesn't feel quite the same. The pizza can still be good at times, but it's not as consistently impressive as it once was. With several other spots in the area now offering really strong pizza options, it's harder to say this would be my first choice. I still appreciate the history I have with the place, but I do think there's room to get back to what made it so great years ago.

We didn't have time for the places I sometimes like to eat at in the Row (sit down places that would have taken longer than 30 minutes), and we didn't want to eat at any of the chain places nearby either. Just when we were getting into one of those situations where every option gets shot down until you get desperate and end up somewhere you don't even like, we saw Vace's awning. It looked old school and like they might sell pizza by the slice inside, so we wandered in. Since visiting I've done a little research and now I know that Vace Italian Deli started in DC in 1976 and that it's still family-owned almost 50 years later. They offer 60+ items made in house (fresh deli sandwiches, homemade pasta, and freshly baked pizza) and have small store where you can get plenty of great Italian food items (their olive oils looked amazing and did their anchovies and other jarred items)! We got a couple of slices of pizza each (one cheese and one pepperoni for him, one spinach and one onion for me), which were really great. A great walking lunch, and exactly what we had time for. (I say a walking lunch, because Vace is to go only, there's no where to sit.) I really enjoyed our experience here, and I'm glad we wandered until we found it. A fun surprise in Bethesda.
