Hubby had the 3 piecd catfish with fries, okra and pinto beans. 3 Nice big filets, fried to perfection with a nice cornmeal batter. He loved the pinto beans, like homemade. Even the rolls were good. While in the area we stopped in here to eat from a Google recommendation. The place was certainly hopping, which is a good sign for a business. Parking is in a lot out front and was getting packed when we arrived. We came inside and were seated right away. Service was also pretty quick, and we didn't wait long to get our order in. I had the baked catfish plate which comes with 3 sides and I got hushpuppies. The food was really good and while getting 3 sides is pretty plentiful for a plate I was kind of disappointed in how small the hushpuppies were. Ah well. It was good food, though I will say the catfish fillet didn't seem like 8 ounces. We did get refills on drinks at least twice, and we enjoyed a view of the river. read more

First the sweet tea was overwhelmingly sweet, the sugar almost precipitating, so much that I, addicted to sugar (), drank some and needed to add as much water as I could to dilute it. The Cole slaw was the same, way too sweet. if you can't make it taste good ADD SUGAR?! The breading on the fish was likewise overly SALTY, and they were thin catfish filets, so don't expect to have a nice bite of the flakey white fish. The hush puppies were small and kind of hard (thawed and refrozen?), instead of crunchy out and yummy cornbread inside. The French fries were warm not hot, and limp. There wasn't a redeeming quality to the food. The bad food experience was mitigated somewhat by being in view of the Guadalupe River, but better restaurants can claim that diversion. The place needs a thorough overhaul, perhaps including a new or retrained and encouraged chef. read more

We were a group on a tour of the area in our old cars. This was the end of tour and what a great ending. Everyone was smiling and friendly. The waitress was wonderful. Super efficient and treating each order as though it was a special one. Teas and water were refilled on a regular basis. That in its self is a difficult job. I was surprised on how quickly the food was delivered to each of us. The quality and portion size left nothing to be wished for. Catfish filets were perfectly fried - the batter was also seasoned to perfection. Crisp and not salty! Fried okra - the best I have ever had (and I am old man). Coleslaw - among the best I have eaten (except for my own). Hush puppies - very good, but only 2 of them. Sweet Potato fries - properly done - good. Tartar sauce - another surprise - not runny with good pickles and some onions. Cocktail sauce - great balance - with a bit of sweet & heat. The food was good and came out quickly considering how busy they were. We were seated by the back windows with a river view. I had the salmon which was cooked just right not too dry. Have been there several times but today was the worst. Wife and I each ordered the large catfish with salad and a side. They brought the salads that had rotten lettuce on each of them. Sent them back which they replaced again with rotten lettuce! Called waitress to send back once again and she tried to justify the lettuce was colored. Sorry at 70 I know the difference! She kind of got an attitude and while she was taking them back to the kitchen the owner saw her a followed her to the kitchen. Owner didn't bother to come over to apologize for the rotten food!! I will say the rest of the food was very good! Upon checking out the owner knowing I was the one with salads never asked how everything was because she knew and surely didn't want my response!! Food was pretty good. Portions were pretty decent. Ranch dressing was Ben E. Keith brand. Salad was 99.9% green leaf, with a sprinkling of red cabbage, grated cheese and croutons. No tomato or other veggies. My baked potato was perfect and loaded with all available toppings if you only want butter. There was no offering of SC, cheese, GO or bits. Just butter! lol smh, but it was good. Ambiance would have been 5 stars if the windows had been cleaned in the last decade. We visited at sunset and the windows were white from the glare of the dirt and hand prints. They do a ton of drive thru and pickup. Known for the catfish per the locals. Went for a late lunch. The waitress was attentive to us. The food was pretty good. Everything was well seasoned. I recommend getting the fried pickles if you are a pickle lover. When I think of "local flavor," several perennial favorites come to mind: the buttermilk biscuits from Jim's, puffy tacos from Ray's, and buttery yeast rolls from The Barn Door. A native Kerrvillian friend of mine agrees with my picks but adds one more item to his list: the fried catfish from The Lakehouse, a local favorite for over thirty years. I prefer to visit an establishment a minimum of three times before penning a review, but I sampled enough fried catfish from The Lakehouse in just one visit to understand why so many locals (many of them blue-haired -- more on that later) flock to this place in droves. The sprawling three-page menu includes everything from chicken-fried steaks and burgers to dinner-portioned salads, but one particular bottom dweller keeps popping up. I will spare you with a lame, overplayed parody of Bubba's shrimp dish routine from "Forrest Gump," but the menu does indeed read like a catfish-centric variant of said routine; whilst skimming the menu, I spotted fried catfish fillets, baked catfish, catfish gumbo, and catfish tacos. Had I ventured to the dessert page, I would have expected to see catfish pecan pie with catfish ice cream à la mode. I resisted the momentary urge to indulge in a catfish cornucopia and went with the all-you-can-eat* platter consisting of fried catfish fillets, popcorn shrimp, and clam strips. Of the three featured items, the large, flaky catfish fillets were the undisputed winner. Like most detritivores, the bottom-dwelling catfish taste of what they eat, so I assume owners Mark and Sallie Armstrong source their fish from a reputable supplier (Bower's farm, perhaps?). This would explain the slightly sweet flavor and lack of muddiness often associated with catfish and other seagoing consumers of detritus. The popcorn shrimp and clam strips, alas, were tough, rubbery nuggets of dough likely sourced from a freezer bag. If a menu offers shrimp of unspecified origin, then they likely come not from the Texas Gulf Coast but from the fetid, pig feces-saturated shrimp farms of Southeast Asia. Pro tip: specify "catfish only" when ordering your all-you-can eat platter. Accompanying sides of rice pilaf and coleslaw were passable but unspectacular. The former was pleasantly buttery, albeit a tad soupy, while the latter called to mind the cloyingly sweet slaw from Kentucky Fried Chicken, not exactly lavish praise. The two small, dense, over-fried hush puppies were forgettable, but the house-made tartar sauce (creamy and savory with just the right amount of vinegary bite from the pickles) helped resuscitate them. At this point, you might be wondering, "If he's poo-pooed everything but the catfish, then why the three-star 'A-ok!' review?" The answer to that question, dear reader, is simple: the catfish is extraordinary, some of the best I've had in recent memory. Also, who am I to trash a place beloved by so many sweet local retirees? Yes, a panorama of the dining room looks like Bingo night at the local assisted living center...minus the bouquet of 2-nonenel, benzothiazole, dimethylsuplohone, boiled cabbage, and Vick's VapoRub. But I digress; old people appreciate the comfort and familiarity of a place like The Lakehouse. As for me, I am a mature enough to appreciate this place for what it is: a local landmark known for one thing only: fried catfish. We were pleasantly surprised. We were looking for a place on Friday night, and everything else we tried was packed. The Lakehouse had a good number of open tables, and we were able to get in quickly. The food was very good. I had the catfish, and it was well done. I got a garden salad, which was huge, and then green beans, which were nicely seasoned. My wife ordered chicken breast off of the lighter menu, and she said it was really good as well. My daughter got a burger on the kids menu with mashed potatoes as the side. She said the mashed potatoes were the best she'd had on our trip. We got peach cobbler with ice cream for dessert, and it came with a decent-sized portion of the cobbler and two big scoops of ice cream. The restaurant is very casual and has a nice view of the river. Probably our only real complaint would be that the tables are all really close together, and so we felt like we were a bit on top of each other. read more

The food is always consistently good and the service friendly and welcoming! Whenever I walk in the door, you know you're always met with a friendly face and even though we're not locals, the owners and staff have come to recognize us. Our server was delightful and working very hard and very quickly. She seemed to be covering the vast majority of the restaurant, and she was doing it well. Our food arrived hot in a decent time period. We ordered grilled shrimp with a house salad and mashed potatoes and the smaller appetites chicken strips with a baked potato. The salad was great, my mom really enjoyed it and ate the whole thing. The rest of the food was just okay... the shrimp was overcooked, the potato had a bit of an odd flavor to the skin. Whelp, I was looking forward to trying the ol Lakehouse, but no dice. I got there at 7:45 (they close at 8:30) and there wasn't a car in the parking lot. We walk in and ask if they are open, the host says "I don't know..." turns to his coworker and says "are we open?" "Yes we are, come on" he walks us to the back where we get dirty looks from every employee we passed. We got to our table and left because we didn't trust the food at that point.
