My wife and I arrived at the Kona Outrigger Hotel and Spa Resort just around 7pm. We had 7pm reservations so my wife went directly to the Wailele cafe as I dropped off our things at the hotel. I joined my wife at the cafe and learned that no waiter or waitress had been at her table to assist her. It was 740 by the time we got a waitress, who made suggestions and apologized for the delays. I ordered the Thai Red Curry Beef flatbread and my wife ordered the Shrimp BLT flatbread. I really enjoyed the flatbread it was like a sweet and mild spicy pizza. My wife ordered a Mua Mai Tai, which she said tasted strange and was not very good. While the food was better than we expected, the Mai Tai was funky. It took about 20-25 minutes to be served. No one watched over our needs and I had to find someone to get me the check. Overall, the customer service was very poor. I would have given this Trip a one-star review, but I added a star for the delicious flatbread. Next Day: we returned for brunch in the morning and were promptly assisted by the waiter who kept a watchful eye. Food was above average and my wife liked the coconut syrup. During our Hawaii trip, one of the group members surprised everyone with a dinner reservation at Wailele Cafe located inside the Outrigger Kona Resort. Everyone was excited and looked forward to the dinner. When everyone was done getting ready, we left and headed over to the Outrigger Kona Resort. We arrived and parked in the public parking section. We walked through the resort and pool area and arrived at the Wailele Cafe. It was an upscale restaurant with a low light ambience with a large floor area with many tables and seats to accommodate many customers. The staff were friendly and our waitress was very nice and helpful. As a group, we ordered multiple food items to share with each other. The food items we shared were Chicken Wings, Ahi Sashimi, Flatbread with Hummus, and Taro Rolls. They all tasted amazing and everyone enjoyed all the shared food selections! On top of the shared food items, we also ordered individual dishes. I ordered the Grilled Ahi which consisted of jasmine rice, papaya salad, sweet chili oil, and furikake. I was pleased with the dish and it was excellent! We, as a group, had a great experience dining in at Wailele Cafe! The customer service was magnificent, food were cooked perfectly and served in a timely manner, and the restaurant was clean and beautiful! read more

Expensive breakfast, but what we got was well prepared and the server was very friendly and attentive. I ordered a paniolo omelette which had portugués sausage, onions and a white cheese. It was very tasty ($25.00). It came with choice of potatoes or rice. I chose potatoes- which when my plate arrived I was delighted to find that actually the potatoes weren't potatoes at all, but a delicious medley of breadfruit, ube, and pumpkin. My husband ordered Keauhou Breakfast which was 2 eggs, sausage, toast and "potatoes". Our Coffee $4.00. Breakfast was good, but pretty pricey. Beautiful setting at the Outrigger! All of the grounds & open air restaurant. Staying there, we had a Costco hotel credit at the restaurant/hotel. On a grab & go day I ordered the Açaí bowl. I would NOT recommend that item. Ate breakfast there one day & my partner had the buffet which was fine. I had a mushroom spinach goat cheese omelette which was tasty & I would order it again. Wailele Cafe was the only restaurant at the Sheraton Kona Resort open for breakfast or dinner (after 7:00 pm) in May/June 2021. It's not necessarily a "good" restaurant, so much as it was "THE" restaurant (and only room service option when open). Most of the food we had was among the worst we tried on BI; however, the Cocktails and a Connecticut-style (Butter-only) Lobster Roll were worthy of real recommendations ... if you find yourself dining at Wailele Cafe. * 1944 Original Mai Tai ($16 - 5 stars) This "Original Trader Vic-style" Mai Tai (created in Oakland in '44) is so much better than a Hawaiian-style Mai Tai sweetened with pineapple and orange juice (updated by Vic in Hawaii in 1954). The Wailele Cafe version features KoHana Kea Agricole Rum, Santa Teresa 1796 Rum, Ferrand Dry Curacao, Orgeat, and Lime Juice ... and was truly worthy of its fame. * Veranda Collins ($14) Any drink with Bombay Sapphire Gin plus D'aristi Kalani Coconut Liqueur and Passion Fruit Puree is going to be a smooth temptation ... and this was! It's a relaxing way to chill out Lime Sour & Club Soda. * Lobster Roll ($22 - 4.5 stars + $12) The first is $22, but it's only $12 if you get a 2nd ... so, I got two, of course ... and I'm glad because the "Connecticut Style" was sooo good. It's lobster sauteed in butter (instead of the other option of "Maine Style" with celery, tarragon & mayo) on a toasted brioche bun. It strikes me as "funny" that the Connecticut-style Lobster Rolls were the ... by far ... best thing I ate at Wailele Cafe on the island of Hawaii. Kalua Pork and Pineapple Pizza ($17 - 2 stars) It's listed on the menu with "Red Sauce" which was totally correct. The sauce was red ... and without any other distinction. Yummy "Hawaiian" pizza with pineapple is awesome. This was not THAT pizza ... although the pork was a-ok. Chicken Chopped Salad ($18 - 1 star) Do not waste time or calories for your waist with this worse-than-average salad featuring dull chicken on a bed of Iceberg Lettuce, Onions, and Eggs topped with Bacon Bits and a Sesame Soy Vinaigrette. Poke & Avocado Appetizer ($18 - 2 stars) I think we ate Poke every day on vacation on BI and this was the least inspiring cuts of Ahi Tuna despite fresh Avo, Imitation Crab, and Furikake to dip with Fried Wonton Chips. Otherwise, live music (from a 2-person band) near the pool was an entertaining (at times) distraction some nights. Service was remarkably friendly and patient for dealing with tourists every day. Plus one star for our server! If you're staying at the Sheraton Kona Resort, you will likely get the chance to try the breakfast AND dinner menu. My advice is to use as much of that $150 room credit included in your vacation package on 1944 Mai Tai cocktails and Connecticut Lobster Rolls. read more

Wailele Cafe is the only restaurant in the Outrigger hotel. Otherwise the nearest restaurants are at least a 5 minute drive away. Knowing this and given the reviews I didn't have high expectations. I had dinner here with seven others and overall the dinner was not bad. The prices are high but I expected that in a hotel restaurant. However, the quality was not bad. I ordered a Mai Tai but would probably skip it next time. I didn't think it tasted sweet or sour and could not taste the citrus or almond flavors. Perhaps it's just me, as I'm not a big Mai Tai drinker. A few of my dining companions ordered the mango cocktail and loved it. We started off the meal sharing some appetizers of hummus, pizza and chicken wings. They were okay but none of these dishes really stood out to me as especially good or bad. For dinner I ordered the Korean short ribs with kimchi fried rice and bok choy. The beef was so tender and flavorful but was not fatty. The rice came with a fried egg. The vegetables were cooked just right, leaving them a bit crispy. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their dishes as they finished their meals. Service was friendly and attentive. The restaurant was actually packed on the night of my visit while it's less so during the day for breakfast/lunch. For a hotel restaurant the food was fine and the prices were on the high side. The $45 market catch (ono) was overcooked and dried out, while the bok choy on the plate was so undercooked it was practically raw. The macadamia pie looked and tasted like it was made with a frozen crust. Let's start with positives: Beautiful ambience. This restaurant sits on the pool deck of the hotel which makes for a spectacular view at night. A musician was set up and provided great entertainment, which included involving our children in a show, which we really appreciated and was so much fun. It's also a short walking distance from the viewing point of the manta rays, which was amazing to go see after dinner. Unfortunately, we did not enjoy the food or service here. After you seat yourself, you have to wait in a line and order your food at the bar. The menu is very high priced and doesn't include a children's menu. Which would have been okay except the food portions were laughable. Easily spent over $150 on our bill after tip...for 1 order of sashimi, 2 bowls of white rice, chicken wings and 2 drinks. They walked over our food to the table, it was served in to go boxes due to the kitchen having run out of dishes, while the rest of our party had plates. When you opened the to go box of sashimi, there was this tiny dot in the center; a small "pile" of the thinnest slices you've ever seen. And 4 chicken wings in the other to go box. Absurdly priced for the portions we received. We would never dine here again. The rest of the couples we were with were equally disappointed by their orders. read more

While staying at the Outrigger, my son and I enjoyed 3 meals at the Wailele Cafe. One was a to-go meal on Christmas Day because there were no reservations or walk ins available. We ordered the rib eye and the roasted chicken. Of the two, I would recommend the rib eye which came with a reduction sauce. It was on the pricey side, but it was convenient and filled our bellies. The service was fairly quick. I ordered my meal, waited in my hotel room, and it was ready for pick up after 25 minutes. The two other meals were for breakfast and dine-in. The service was pleasant and nicely paced. We enjoyed the French toast with bananas and macadamias and a plate with eggs, Portuguese sausage, and toast. The restaurant is adjacent to the adult pool. The space is open with also a view of the ocean. I would return again for breakfast, if I were staying in the hotel. read more

No, I'm not a haole, who's visiting the islands for the first time; I've grown up coming to Maui and Big. I'm from DC, our restaurant prices are comparable to resorts, so no sticker shock. My seafood chowder has 1 piece of shrimp, ONE sad little shrimp, 1 sliver of fish, and 1 slice of purple sweet potato; all resting, not swimming because it's all of 1/4" deep, in the broth (it's overly salty and about 6 spoonfuls worth). First and foremost, our server was awesome. With that said, the rest of the experience was meh. It is important to know this is a poolside cafe, not indoor dining. Not a big deal, but I certainly didn't have the right expectations. The food was basic at best, and at fine dining prices. Mahi was previously frozen (yes I'm a chef and can tell) and the cut was rather fishy. At $36 I would expect fresh caught and a good cut away from the bloodline (which is why it is fishy). The NY steak was ordered medium rare (to medium, I asked) but came out nearly blue (means barely seared on both sides) and wasn't seasoned very well. It came with a pepper jelly which is just laughable in the food industry and shows zero culinary creativity. It was served with carrots, spinach, and purple potato (ube) medalions and the potatoes weren't even peeled. While the skin is edible, it takes away from both flavor and consistency of the ube which really is amazing. Just seems lazy to me. It really is difficult finding good food in Kona, but I did expect better and won't be going back. read more

We ordered a flatbread which was delicious. My husband ordered the fresh fish which was perfectly done. I had a salad which was also very good, as well as a side of potatoes and roasted mushrooms. The restaurant is an open air set up, by the "adults only" pool. They have live music Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. The dinner menu is okay, but we really enjoyed the wraps they serve at lunch from the Holua Bar menu. The reason for the 4 stars is the service we recieved from all the staff in the bar and especially the restaurant. Conrad works in the restaurant and he was great! His customer service is excellent and he makes your dining experience magical. The resort is not full, but I suspect this will change since Outrigger took over the operations. Our goal was a night at a very nice hotel to escape for a night from our questionable bnb. We nailed it. Dinner was fabulous, with fresh, delicious and well-presented food. The live music was jazzy and lovely as we enjoyed our drinks and dinner. Yeah, it's rather expensive, because we're at a hotel. But the service was so friendly and accommodating that I don't mind giving lots of stars. Our server was training another person, and they brought drinks and food that were just what we wanted, in a very timely manner. The chicken with dips was freshly made, and the cheeseburger was stuffed with salad, which satisfied my husband completely. When I asked for the rest to be boxed up so we could "eat leftovers in front of tv in our room", no problem. Earth friendly to-go containers and offers to add extra dips were appreciated. It also came with the small cup of sweet and sour sauce and very interesting flavor. 4/5 2. The seared Ahi was very awesome too. The fish is not slimy at all, served with crunch, sweet, little salty, and sour papaya salad, and warm jasmine rice. I really enjoyed this dish 5/5 3. Lobster roll was so o good. The buttery bread and the lobster meat had that crunchy flavor eat with potatoes-chip and cold slaw. 4/5 4. The seafood chowder come with small fine chopped fish, shrimp, and clams. Everything was pretty much bland and lacking in flavor. The chips and salsa was $12 and everything clearly tasted like it came out of packaging..because it did. Some of the chips were even stale. The mac crusted mahi itself was actually okay but I was really looking forward to the coconut curry. That was a real disappointment because they literally gave me like a tablespoon of it and it tasted like nothing...and it was $40... c'mon. The poke was a little sweet, which was odd. The wonton chips that came with it were also kind of stale. Lastly the fish tacos were probably the best part of dinner and they were just 'okay'. Some more salt and they'd be better. I'm staying here at the hotel and I saw that the Wailele Cafe has a HH. I thought I would get a beverage to go and sit in one of the chairs looking out out the ocean. Arrived at the restaurant to a sign that says "wait for hostess to seat you". I waited close to 10 min. Asked if it would be possible to order a cocktail to take outside and enjoy while enjoying the view. She told me yes but I'd have to order from the bar tender at the bar. The bar was small and packed. No where to go up and request a beverage. I confirmed to her I need to order from the bar and she said "yes; but it's very busy right now". After waiting as long as I did and the response I received I left. I went to the Holo Holo and bought sparkling wine in a can and found a view with a chair. After reading the reviews of the Resturant I see I wasn't missing anything. Disappointing because this is the only place at the hotel to eat or get a cocktail. read more

Sprawling oceanfront hotel with large open area for restaurant. We got a wonderful table with a view of the manicured grounds and ocean. Live traditional Hawaiian ukulele music added to ambiance. I wish I could say the food matched the setting. Shishito peppers had no seasoning. Just grilled peppers with oil. Chopped chicken salad was little more than iceberg lettuce with bland diced chicken breast. Somehow, the short rib was dry and chewy, which is really hard to do with short rib. The included "fried rice" was not fried. Pasty and mushy and, again, without seasoning. Stringy green vegetables were inedible. Went out after the "meal" and watched for manta rays on the observation deck, which was really cool. Then, went home and had something to eat. read more

I made this reservation as a way to see the Manta Rays from the viewing area. I saw a few less then stellar reviews, but decided to try the food anyway . The food was really good! I got a pineapple picker as my drink with the Penne Pasta with Hamuka Mushroom and cream sauce and my date got a wedge salad with a Mai Tai. I was pleasantly surprised.
