Really appreciate they have a sugar free option that a) tastes delicious and doesn't have that artificial sweetener taste; and b) doesnt impact the texture of the ice. The girl at the window was OVER IT, and couldn't be bothered with us, but the shaved ice was delish. A noticeable quality and deliciousness upgrade in their ice cream, compared to other places we've tried. If I could I would leave zero stars, the flavors all tasted like cough syrup, we bought six of them and they were all awful! I am trying to u deans where all the good reviews came from. Friendly service and this location also has good parking. I was craving for flan, so I ordered #1 (azuki shave ice, $7) with an add-on of a flan cake. The total came out to be $11.00. On the way home, I was wondering how it came to be that price unless the flan add-on was $4.00. It was good, although I thought the flan cake add-on was kinda pricey for what it was. I love Waiola! The ice is so fluffy and soft and their syrups are very good. Ice cream and condensed milk is an extra cost but for me it's worth it. The ice cream and condensed milk adds a creaminess to your shaved ice. Plus the condensed milk makes your shaved ice pretty. The service is quick and good. This is seriously good ice-shave (or Shave Ice) ! My favorite is #2, the rainbow flavors with 3 scoops vanilla ice cream in a bowl. The fine shaving of ice is incredible and they give a lot for $7. It's as good as my favorite bingsu and it's got that old school vibe! The parking is not that good (like the other location) but it's enough. Nothing like sitting on the bench in the hot sun and enjoying the best shave ice on the island (or maybe the world!) Yes, other places give more, other places have home-made flavors, other places might be cheaper, but THIS is the place I go to. When I am eating this shave ice, I want to give it 15+ stars! Super soft and fluffy shaved ice! It's just like taking a handful of fresh snow and eating it. This is a must-have and a perfect way to beat the heat. Make sure to bring cash! I got a large shaved ice with POG (passionfruit, orange, grapefruit) and lychee syrup. The lychee was honestly my favorite. It wasn't too sweet and tasted just like the lychee fruit but not super artificial. The POG was also good, but a bit too sour for me. They could have been a bit more generous with the syrup because by the time we got halfway, there wasn't much flavor. read more

Fast service and great prices! It's a small little brick and mortar location on Mountain said Honolulu. We went there after doing several of the waterfall hikes up above on Pali Highway. Everyone got different flavor combinations and most all were spot on! The ice was perfect consistency and it did not stand a chance as it was super refreshing! I really loved this location of Waiola compared to the other location. Easy to find with good enough parking available. Ordering is easy at the window, & I loved that there were lots of seating available on the side with umbrellas. Perfect for a hot day. The shave ice was so yummy. Nice texture and a good amount of syrup but it's less flavorful than some other places. There are a few size options, and the prices are about average or a little on the less expensive side, taking into account the sizes. Waiola is a truly local's shaved ice location. It's in a residential area where you won't find any other restaurants or bars. It's actually a hole in the wall of a larger convenience store. You won't find any seating besides an outdoor bench or two. The line forms on the sidewalk and only free street parking is available. The sizing options are fantastic because you can get a huge jumbo serving or a small cup alone. The flavors are fun and extensive, and the standard combos are good. There's even a peanut butter flavor for puppies! The only down side is that they don't chill their syrups so the ice melts faster than other places who keep their syrups cold. read more

Located in kaimuki right behind Alejandro's! Super easy to find! They have parking right in front of the store but additional parking on the side too! You can order and eat your shave ice there, they have a cute table with umbrellas outside and a cute shave ice stand to take pictures with also. They don't just sell shave ice, they have snacks in their store! Their shave ice is sooooo good and affordable. Additional toppings are only a $1!!! Tried out the second location and it was just as good! The location is actually nicer. Fewer parking spaces though. Tried the POG (passion orange guava) and mango this time and my wife got lychee and sour apple. The POG was basically just guava and the lychee was watery. Mango and strawberry and probably still the best flavors I've tried. Of course gotta get it with vanilla ice cream. Takes it to the next level with the very smooth shave ice. $4 for a small, +$1 for ice cream. There are children also working at this location like the original, so the service will be reflected in that. Would probably come to this location in the future since it's a little closer to Waikiki and in a nicer spot of town. read more

I never knew that Waiola opened up a 2nd location in Kapahulu until today when I was craving shave ice and it came up on my handy dandy Yelp app! Upon arrival I was happy to see that this place seems a bit larger than their original location in McCully. They have more parking spaces and several benches to sit outside. Like their McCully location, they also have a little market which sells merch and candy, seeds, etc. Their menu is similar to their McCully location. I got a size large rainbow for $5 and added condensed milk on top for .50 cents. The shave ice was very fine and much better than how I remembered it. Service, however, was lacking. The girl at the front didn't even say hello or greet the customers. So much for the aloha spirit! I'd return again since they are much closer to me than the McCully location. Wow, some the smoothest, softest shave ice I've tried. Some interesting flavors available with pronounced flavors. 3 of us ordered a large with ice cream and I had Keiki size with no ice cream. There least expensive places, but this location's ice was so soft it should be tried. This location is diffidently a locals shave ice place tucked away in an older residential part of Town. I have been to the other location many times but I prefer this one it has more private parking compared to street parking at the other location. The store is larger inside as well and there is a lot of merch available for purchase. I recommend bringing cash as there is a 4% surcharge for using card. The menu is large I got a large da works and large azuki bowl. Da works came with ice cream, mochi balls, lychee jelly, condensed milk and flavors were mango, pog, lychee. I liked this bowl over the other one the lychee flavor with lychee jelly were a great combo. The azuki bowl had azuki beans, condensed milk, mochi balls, and the flavor was sweet milk. This bowl was so boring and just tasted like ice the sweet milk flavor did nothing and the beans and mochi balls were too hard. The shaved ice here had the softest and pillowiest texture which I enjoyed. The service is quick but not so friendly the worker almost gave my order away to another person and it wasn't even busy. read more

Very popular shave ice location near waikiki and Diamond Head. The flavors are tasty and the ice is soft as snow. The ice cream was a hard hand scoop which made it hard to eat in a shave ice. It's a Hawaiian treasure for a reason right? This was actually my first shaved ice EVER so I may have ruined shaved ice for myself, cause this is gonna be hard to beat I'm sure! They are somewhat reminiscent of my Coco/Cherry/Mango/Rainbow Icies in NYC (if you seen those cards, you know what I'm talking about in the city). There are a plethora of flavors and I got Lilikoi (passion fruit). Totally love, really enjoyed the flavor profile to shaved ice ratio. It always sucks when you just taste more ice than actual flavor, but I didn't feel skimped out! I would've given this place 5 if it weren't for the girl working on 5/28/23. She seemed like she didn't want to be there. I got the Hawaii 5-0 Rainbow and it was cotton candy (didn't taste very good), lychee and passion fruit, which were both great. The flavors were light, not too sweet and the shaved ice was the softest, fluffiest and smoothest I ever had in my life. I also got the creamsicle which was also good. read more

Shaved ice! I was told that shave ice should be fine ice not crunchy. This place has just that. I like mine with ice cream. The had some new toppings like condensed milk and mochi. This unassuming spot is right off a main road and in the neighborhoods. Service is quick and friendly. There are a lot of flavor varieties and dessert choices. We stuck with hood old two flavor shave ice. Their ice is powdery, instead of granular. Easy to get brain freeze! I've visited Waiola at another location before and had a great experience, so I decided to give this different location a try. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with this well-known spot because the service was unwelcoming and rather unpleasant. The texture of the mochi balls was hard, not soft, chewy mochi. There's a decent amount of syrup, but it lacks the robust flavor found at some other establishments. They offer various size options, and the prices are generally average or slightly lower, considering the portion sizes. I suggest bringing cash to avoid a 4% surcharge for card payments if you do decide to check this place out. Both Oahu Revealed and Lonely Planet said this was the place to go for shave ice if you don't want to drive all the way to north shore and boy were they right! My wife had an Obama's Rainbow (cherry, lime, and passion fruit [lilikoi]) and I had a pineapple/passion fruit with azuki beans. They shave and pack the ice so fine that it's really unlike anything else. If it had been closer to Waikiki, we would have gone every day, especially with their wide selection of flavors. No restroom, so be sure to bring wet wipes or something to clean your hands because it can get sticky. read more

Best shave ice in the Honolulu/Waikiki area! You should still go to Matsumoto's for the best on the North Shore, but Waiola wins out in my opinion. Order the haupia flavor (coconut), with condensed milk, ice cream, and beans. You'll know what heaven is like after your first bite. read more

Perfect timing, there was no line... YES! I ordered two strawberry mango with ice cream, mochi balls and condensed milk on top. I watched the solo employee methodically proceed step by step. She checked the block of ice til she was satisfied with the consistency of the shaven ice and pierced it in place. So smart she put the shaved ice into the bowls then poured syrup on it topped by a scoop of ice cream then continued to add more shaved ice. After she so gently shaped it she then poured half of the mound with one flavor then the half with the second flavor both in squeez bottles. Last of all she topped it off with the condensed milk. Such gracious pride in her skill made so lovingly. Every spoonful was so delicately refreshing. Please support and celebrate Asian American enterprises like Monsarrat Shave Ice. The menu board is posted on the left wall of the ordering counter.
