Looked up a shaved ice spot close to home and found this!!! Didn't even know they were in Kalihi but thank goodness because I really wanted some shaved ice!!! There was tons of parking out front so we were glad! It's a cute little shop and I really like the door to go inside. We ordered the strawberry and salted lemon shaved ice #4 and it came with pineapple and strawberries. We also added ice cream so the total came out to $19 and something cents. Without ice cream would've been around $15. I think it was worth it! It was our first time trying and I'm not sure if it was the owner but I feel like she recognizes her customers because she asked if it's our first time since she's never seen us before hahaha!! The person taking our order was so sweet she explained everything to us and was easy to understand. 10/10 would come back and recommend. Cute place with a fun vibe and friendly staff! The store is small and a little hard to spot from the street since the entrance is on the side, but once inside it's clean and decorated with some really nice murals. The interior is pretty tight, with a narrow walkway between the seating areas. When we visited, almost every seat was occupied, so we had to make our way to the far end and squeeze past other customers to find a place to sit. There was also an area marked for employees only (at what would have been the front door) and boxes were stacked in front of part of the bench seating, which made the space feel a bit cramped. The menu is very limited, with eight bowl options, all priced at $14.99 and no sign of a standard type shave ice. The portion is large and includes fresh fruit, but there is not a children's size or a smaller, lower-priced option available. If you are looking for a traditional shave ice shop with lots of syrup flavors and the ability to customize a simple shave ice, this probably is not the place for you. We ordered what was essentially the plainest shave ice available, just ice with two flavors, and it was still charged at the same price as the specialty bowls. There was not an option for a basic shave ice on the menu, we had to ask for that (since my son doesn't eat all the extra stuff and only wanted plain strawberry banana flavors) and the flavor selection was fairly limited overall. They were also out of a couple of flavors during our visit, despite already having a relatively small selection (around a dozen total). I also found the ice was not as finely shaved as I expected, and the flavors left an aftertaste. While the portions are bigger (served in a bowl), the price felt high for something that melts quickly. Adding ice cream costs extra, bringing the total close to $20 for a single shave ice. One small thing that stood out to me is that they refer to it as "shaved ice" rather than "shave ice." Visitors may not notice the difference, but in Hawaii, "shave ice" is the traditional local term and part of the culture, so the wording felt a little out of place - and definitely didn't seem local (Everyone we saw seemed to be either a tourist or military). That said, the employees were genuinely friendly, and the shop itself is cute. It may appeal to those looking for specialty fruit-forward creations, but it was not quite what I was expecting from a traditional Hawaii-style shave ice experience, especially given the price point. If you're on Oahu, Island Soul Shave Ice is easily one of our favorite stops. An absolute must before or after visiting the Bishop Museum (it's only 3-4 minutes away!). The rainbow shave ice was hands-down my kids' favorite out of all the shave ice spots we tried. They loved getting to decorate their own shave ice with three different flavors. It made the experience extra fun and personal. We also tried the cassava pudding and unique flavors like jasmine, taro, and pandan--something totally new for us. Never have had true Hawaiian shaved ice so my review is less of is it authentic to shaved ice but more of my experience and my thought of this version in particular. Immediately I was impressed by the cleanliness and interior design. 10/10 in regard to those. Super kid friendly, great spots to take pictures etc. The gentleman who made our shaved ice was very friendly and very helpful in helping us choose what we wanted. He even had a toy chest that my daughter enjoyed. Nothing to complain about here but I did have some possible suggestions that could improve operational effectiveness. I believe the items we received looked incredible but the pictures on the menu did not do it justice. Maybe an update to that could help with customer selection. An amazing eating experience! I have never seen this type of shaved ice eating experience. We ordered the #1 and you got to self pour all these different type of homemade organic syrups and add all these fun fresh fruit toppings! Kenneth, the owner, is so friendly and informative on the menu as well as the perfect combinations that they've come up with to balance savory, sweet, tart, and salty notes. I opted for the #6 which came with taro and Ube paste, a savory coconut cream, and delicious sweet pikake floral shave ice flavor. I have never tried pikake but OMG is it amazingly good with the combination of coconut and pastes, I would definitely recommend it! My husband got the #1 DIY shave ice and the owner offered multiple flavors of syrup to try as well as fresh fruit. His favorite syrup was the salty and spicy local mixed withe the lychee. Overall it was an amazing experience with flavors I've never tried. The shops only been open 6 months but the ice is delicious, decor is popping and eye catching, and the service is top notch! Okay, so we were a little skeptical trying a "fancy" ice shave (or shave ice if you live here on Oahu) place...especially in Kalihi...usually not known for fancy kine things or tourist targeted establishments. But I must say we were all VERY pleasantly surprised. The ice shave was some of the best ever. And that's saying something coming from locals like us. I had the salted lemon and strawberry. The strawberry side tasted like real strawberry, not just straight up sugar. And the salted lemon was just like the lemon peel you'd get in a crack seed store, except without the aspartame aftertaste. I also opted for some ice cream with it, which as a good choice. I didn't ask if they also had azuki bean, which I would have preferred to the ice cream...but you know...TREAT YO'SELF sometimes The taste was amazing and fresh, (although the salted lemon was a bit too much for the tourists sitting next to us who also got it,but the staff quickly swapped it out for them) The wife got a cool combo kit that was meant to share, but it was big enough that we both could have just got that. It came with banana, lychee and jasmine syrups. Again, all delicious and perfectly sweet. Both of our ice shave bowls came with very fresh local fruit, including pineapple, melon, tangerine, starfruit, and strawberries. This really puts the ice shave here over the top. The workers there at extremely friendly and very helpful in guiding everyone who came in through the menu. In talking to one of them, we learned they make all their own syrups and use only organic cane sugar. And they try to use locally sourced fruits and ingredients for everything when possible. It's gotta be more expensive to do this, but as a local and native Hawaiian, it is appreciated when business owners insist on this type of sourcing. And yes, it is perhaps a bit more than some of the cheaper places, but still cheaper than anything you can get in Waikīkī. And the quality is top notch, flavors delicious, and the staff were welcoming. I only wish they would expand to other locations. Another local couple eating near us said they would make a killing out in Ka Makana Aliʻi. We totally agreed. But for now, we definitely plan to return. Ha, in fact while we were there, a Chinese family on vacation stopped by for the second day in a row, just to get shave ice for everyone.
