Looks are deceiving, spicy ahi is gross with a relish taste. Sushi rice is hard. Ordered 3 hrs in advance before pick up. 1/10 rating.

Was so excited to order a ahi platter for my sister's welcome home dinner. The spicy ahi was beyond disappointed and disgusting. It had a relish taste to it. The sushi rice was hard like they took it out of the refrigerator as left overs from the previous day to make our platter. I called the next day to ask if we could get at least some kind of refund maybe half but the lady (Japanese accent) just hung up the phone. I called again, thinking maybe we were disconnected on accident . But no, she knew what she was doing. Totally rude!

Sushi is okay with plenty of sauce, but is huge! We like the dynamite maki (tempura with spicy ahi on top) and Brian tiger (tempura with unagi and avocado on top).

Always fresh, always consistent. I order from here online all the time. It's always the best quality.

The best bang for your buck and fresh, tasty, made to order sushi on island. I love this place. Service is 10/10 nicest people ever. Always come here for a a quick lunch, I literally eat it in my car cause it's so good fresh.

Soba salad. Sorry I should've took a pic of it before mixing. It was nicely present before hand lol

Got the crunchy donburi and the soba salad. I would come back again. The donburi had shrimp tempura, mild spicy ahi, and mochi. The mochi was a surprise, so crunchy and mochi-y. Love it. The soba salad was very good too.

I've heard that the sushi at Waipuna Sushi is good, so I decided to give it a try myself. They are located near the Manoa Valley Theater and the Manoa Marketplace. As of 8/3/2023, the phone number works (808) 988-1200. Customer service is good. It's a small sushi shop, very mom and pops. There are a few tables inside, nice AC. They have a good variety of sushi offerings in different forms. Temaki, maki mono, nigiri, nigiri bento, hoso maki, noodles and salads, party platters and side orders or bubble drinks. I liked that a few of their maki mono rolls have spicy ahi on top. If you check the menu on their website, (https://waipunasushi.com/), these will have the asterisk next to their names. There are also pictures of the sushi platters online. I tried to take pictures of the pictured menu items as I didn't see a lot of those on Yelp. My friend recommended the "Dynamite Maki" $12.99 with spicy sauce on top. I was really tempted as a lot of the pictures on Yelp are for that maki mono roll. It's gotta be popular for a reason, riiight? Like 2 other people came in after us and also ordered it. It's two shrimp tempura and cucumber rolls (8 pieces total) with spicy ahi on top. I got to try one of the pieces from my friend's roll and it was super delicious! I asked the worker what he recommended and the said his favorite was the "Crunchy Donburi" $13.99 with spicy sauce. I saw this in the pictures on Yelp too! This looked really good and I was happy they still made it, as the picture was from a few years ago. It consists of spicy ahi on a bed of sushi rice. With 4 deep fried rice balls ( c: much cronch) and a choice of tempura, shrimp or vegetable. I went with the shrimp tempura, I think it was one piece cut diagonally in half. The shrimp tempura is freshly fried. I didn't have big expectations coming in but that part made me really impressed (: As I've been to "sushi restaurants" with soggy sad shrimp tempura inside the sushi. I was sorta worried that I didn't order 2 items, because I eat a lot of sushi... Sushi is baaaeee LOL. But I'm glad to report that it was a big portion and I was really full ;D I like that the items were prepared fresh and the ahi quality wasn't bad. It was smothered in a spicy sweet shoyu/ teriyaki sauce, but I really like sauce so I didn't mind. We did take out. The worker packed everything nicely in the bag. Chopsticks, napkins, pickled ginger, wasabi and shoyu. Overall, it's a nice place to grab a quick bite. Prices reflect the portions.

    This is the Dylan Special.

If you come down and ask for the Dylan special you will get a regular size bento with rice and spicy ahi tuna with a generous portion of Ikura. Honestly when served over their sushi rice can't go wrong especially the price. Better than most Japanese restaurants.

I used come here often during High School with my friends and family! I love coming here to get different rolls because they have a good variety! My go to is always dynamite maki(shrimp tempura with poke on top) and uncle Jason's poke nigiri (ahi poke and avocado). I also like their rainbow roll! For the Dynamite Maki, you can choose if you want normal poke or spicy. I usually get spicy. There's lots of parking, and I waited about 5-10min for my two sushi rolls so the service was fast! Staff is also friendly :) I do wish they had description of what is inside the different rolls/maki so I don't have to keep asking the staff. But this place is one of my favorite sushi places for take out!

The best poke and sushi ever!! Strongly recommend avocado uncle Jason!!

We impressed by the amazing service and beautiful dinning area... even when you sitting at the counter it feel like a high end sushi place in Japan. The Garlic Ponzu Fatty Tuna was rich, buttery, and balanced perfectly by the ponzu. The Seared Yuzu Jalapeño Tai Snapper added just enough citrus and heat without overpowering the fish. My favorite of the night was probably the Aburi Kinmedai with Umami Oil & Lemon--the light sear brought out the natural sweetness of the fish while the lemon kept everything bright and refreshing. I also really enjoyed the Oil-Soy Tai Snapper with Fresh Salsa, which felt perfect for summer, and the Crispy Spicy Tuna Bites added a nice crunchy contrast to all the nigiri. What I appreciate most about Onodera is that even though it's conveyor-belt sushi, the quality consistently feels elevated. The fish is fresh, the flavors are thoughtfully balanced, and every plate looks as good as it tastes. The Summer Menu is available for a limited time through August 31, so if you're a sushi lover, it's worth making a visit before these seasonal specials disappear.

After walking around, the hostess asked if we had a reservation. I gave her my name, but she said we didn't have one, even though the restaurant was nearly empty. She then explained that our reservation was actually at their sister restaurant around the other side of the building. We went over there and found that it was primarily a sushi restaurant, which wasn't really what we were looking for. We had expected more of an izakaya-style experience, so we canceled the reservation and returned to the original restaurant. Once seated, the service was good and our server was attentive throughout the meal. One thing that was a little confusing was that sushi and sashimi had to be ordered from the sister restaurant, even though we were dining in the other restaurant. The food was brought over and served to us without any issues, and there were no problems with the bill, but it took us a while to understand how the two restaurants operated together. We ordered several dishes, including chicken skin wrapped gyoza, crab tempura, an assorted sashimi platter, a cream cheese and fish roe appetizer served with toast, an egg dish topped with fish roe, chicken karaage, and the miso butterfish. The highlights for me were the chicken karaage, miso butterfish, and gyoza. I enjoyed them enough to order another round of the gyoza and chicken. That said, many of the dishes leaned toward the sweeter side of Japanese cuisine, which just isn't my personal preference. If you enjoy those flavors, your experience may be different. Overall, the food was good, the service was solid, and there were a few standout dishes. The confusion with the reservation, entrance setup, and relationship between the two restaurants got the evening off to an awkward start, but the meal improved once we were seated. I'm not really a Japanese food person, so four stars is probably the highest rating I could realistically give a Japanese restaurant. With that in mind, I thought they did a good job, and there were a few dishes I would consider ordering again.

There were standouts and overall we loved the meal. A local id gets the 10% service fee removed which was nice. I would recommend the $150 lunch omakase - I don't think the $50 abalone dish was worth the upgrade.

Every piece of sushi was beautifully presented not overwhelming. You can really tell the chefs put a lot of thought into the balance of flavors and textures. One of my favorite bites was a sashimi piece topped with something that looked like finely grated cheese (not sure what it actually was), but it melted perfectly with the fish and added a really unique savory flavor. The chefs and staff also had a good sense of humor. At one point they served kinki fish and jokingly explained that the English translation sometimes gets called "idiot fish," which got everyone laughing at the counter. The omakase is definitely on the pricier side, but the quality, presentation, and overall experience made it very satisfying. If you're looking for a refined sushi experience with great service and beautifully crafted bites, this place is worth the splurge.

DOMO Café, you do NOT disappoint! Domo's Kahala location has quickly become our go-to, grab-and-go…read moresushi joint. Although they have a clean and comfortable space for dining in, we regularly stop by after church or on the weekends for something to savor at our favorite park. Seriously, it's easy to enjoy their bowls, sushi sets, or bentos anytime and anyplace. We've got a passion for this place. Here's how this love affair started...I discovered Domo when a friend invited me for some sushi and sips at her place. I was amazed at the beautiful platter of sushi that accompanied our sake and wine. My friends are the best hosts! I devoured the bombs, nigiris and rolls (in between sips!). Everything was simply delicious! Fast forward a few months, I order a couple sushi sets to host a poolside, golden-hour birthday get together at my other friend's home. (I know, you want to be part of this squad, right?!). Anyway, using the online order system is a snap! My hubby went in to pick up the sushi and said they were slammed but our sushi sets were ready to go. This time we ordered some ikura because the hubby and my bestie are big fans. Both agree it was fresh and fantastic! And the garlic set with the flash-seared fish and a hint of mayo is a MUST-try. We also ordered a California roll for my friend's aunt who is not really a sushi fan. She delighted in several pieces and even enjoyed the nigiri from the garlic set. Total convert! After enjoying the platters and sets, we had to try the bentos and bowls. This time it's just us and the pup at the park. The bentos provide a great variety and comes with miso soup. The hubby really likes the shrimp tempura with ahi and salmon nigiri and ahi poke. It's a steal at less than $20. I'm a bowl girl myself and like the spicy tempura. The tempura is cooked crisp yet tender. The spicy ahi poke combined with the creamy crab salad and the crunchy ocean salad delights all my tastes buds. It's truly an adventure in finding the perfect bite--and there are so many in this bowl! I also love the seared salmon bowl. It is melt-in-your-mouth goodness. I add the fried onions for some texture. You know a place is top-notch when you can feel confident that anything off their menu will satisfy your cravings. Because this is a Yelp review, here are some helpful tips. For sushi platters, pre-order. The online system is simple to use. Service is fast and efficient if you're just walking in for a quick bite or to grab something to go. Parking has always been easy for us to find in the small lot in the complex where Domo is located. It's right next to Assagio's Kahala. But if you're worried about parking, I suggest ordering in advance and then just picking up. This works great during peak dining hours. If you want fresh, delicious sushi that is reasonably priced be like us and visit Domo Café. You will probably also be like us and want to go back to try more.

The garlic salmon didn't have too much smokiness which I liked. They are not stingy when filling the inari with the spicy ahi. I did online ordering for easy pick up since the parking lot can be filled during dinner rush.
