I've boarded my kitties at Waiterock Kennels AKA "The Ranch" for nearly 20-years and wouldn't leave them anywhere else! Liam spent his vacations here at the spa for a long time and even when he was elderly and sick, the folks took great care of him. He never complained - and was even happy to go back. Our dog has stayed at Waiterock several times, but our recent experience there will definitely be our last. As our dog has gotten sick when not eating his regular food, we took the time to portion out individual bags of his food and bring them along as Waiterock requires. Also, when we checked our dog in, we specifically told the lady at the front desk that he did not need extra playtime. When we returned from our trip, we called to confirm their hours and were told that they were open until 6 pm (as the website does not appear to have this pertinent information). When we showed up late that afternoon, the gate was closed with a big sign stating they had closed at 2 p.m. that day, so our dog would need to stay another night. Not only did our dog need to spend another night in the kennel unnecessarily because of this misinformation, but we were also inconvenienced by driving out to the facility to find it closed. Fortunately, in case we had any travel glitches, we had packed an extra portion of food, so we thought to ourselves, at least we don't have to worry about him running out of food. When we arrived the next morning to pick up our dog, I asked the lady at the front desk why we had been told that they closed at 6 p.m. the day before. She said she had been there all day and did not understand why we had been told that, but did apologize. When our dog was brought out, they also gave us the bag of food we supplied. The lady said that our dog had refused to eat his food because he smelled their good quality food (clearly insinuating that our food was not of such quality), and eventually they had to give him their food because they did not want him to starve. As our dog has never turned down his food before, this seemed fishy to me, especially because you would think if our dog was on a hunger strike that they would call us before giving him a different kind of food. In addition, the lady charged us $5 a day for extra playtime. Say what? When confronted with the fact that we had told her that our older dog didn't need extra playtime, she responded that the facility would not have accepted him for a 5 day period unless we agreed to the extra playtime. Again...I ask...say what? When we arrived home and emptied the bag, we counted the portions and it was clear that all the bags were there; they had clearly forgotten to give him his food and then tried to pass it off like he didn't want his food. What a very strange thing for her to lie about. In sum, if the lady (who appears to be in charge) is willing to misrepresent simple things such as food and playtime, how can she be trusted to take adequate care of the dogs? We will take this leap of faith no longer. We advise that you also avoid this place and take your beloved dog to a better facility in the area. read more

I never had a chance to use this dog boarding facility because they told me my dog was too big. My bullmastiff weighs about 100 pounds & is about 24 inches tall. Not much different than a lab which I bet they have plenty of. Candice refused to discuss the matter. So unless you have a Chihuahua don't bother to call. read more

I noticed a response to my review from Waiterock several months after I posted it. The delayed response is really odd, speculative and not factual at all with regard to what happened. I have since found a wonderful kennel and a fantastic dog sitter/walker and all is well. All that was needed was a care provider that actually cared. I boarded my shiba inu here because it is the only place I can find nearby with indoor/ outdoor kennels. I am not sure what was wrong with their phone, but I had to call back 3 times to even get some basic information. When I finally got to talk to them, the guy was less than interested or pleased to speak with me. When we went to pick him up, they brought out the wrong dog. It could be a simple mistake, but if you are going to run a business, don't you think that is one of the most important to get right? read more

I'm a fan of the care and main staff at Waiterock. Like a couple of folks who have posted before me, my husband and I have experimented with many many kennels in the area and Waiterock's care and facilities exceed all the rest. Our dog gets plenty of personal attention and outdoor play time, which is important to us. Unfortunately I can't give a 5-star rating to the kennel because of 'cold' or bad experiences with Candace, the owner. While her staff is amazingly friendly and helpful, she is unpredictable and can be quite rude sometimes to customers. If we have to cancel, we usually do so well in advance and we feel like we've very been polite, responsible customers. However in one extreme instance, after being a customer for over a year, our son died unexpectedly and for obvious reasons we completely forgot to cancel a 2-day reservation that was to start the day he happened to die. When we called to make boarding reservations the following week for the funeral, Candace told my husband "Usually we'd accommodate you but since you were so rude not to cancel your last reservation we can't help you this time." She didn't ask WHY we uncharacteristically didn't call, and was so abrupt and rude that my husband hung up. While this was the most dramatic example of her personality, it wasn't the first time she had been cold. We ended up boarding our dog at Breton's School for Dogs in Danville instead. After staying away from Waiterock for a year tho, and not feeling good about the other boarding facilities we were taking our dog to-- we returned to Waiterock. I don't feel warm and fuzzy about giving the owner our business after what happened, but we feel much better about leaving our dog there than anywhere else. Like I said, the other staff and the facilities are excellent and deserve a 5-star rating-- but the owner can be so rude that I honestly have to deduct 2 stars. Hopefully reviews/comments like the ones here will encourage her to be more empathetic to customer needs/situations. She should seek to understand and help her customers and be polite to the people who keep her in business. read more

We've had two unprofessional experiences with Waitrocke Kennels' dog grooming service and are sorry to say we can not recommend them. In the first instance we had arranged to pick our dog up at a specific time in the afternoon, but when we arrived he hadn't even been started. It took them almost two more hours to get him ready and there was no apology offered. We decided to give them another chance because they're so close to where we live and so made an appointment weeks in advance. When I got there at 8:30 AM to drop him off, however, I was told they no longer groomed his breed (standard poodle) and they were canceling the appointment. The staff just shrugged it off. They seemed not to care about my dilemma and were mostly concerned about blaming it all on other employees. We'd like to use them but these mistakes and the poor customer service mean we can't, not can we recommend them to others. read more

Big Dogs Need Not Apply! We're from out of town and called to arrange for a one day boarding while attending a memorial service. Was grilled by two people, one of whom was extremely abrasive wanting to know why we didn't want our greyhound constantly playing with a pack of dogs. In spite of telling her that he was a therapy dog but didn't like constant play, she just wouldn't give up saying that our dog was aggressive, unsocial, etc. If she doesn't want big dogs then state so up front instead of subjecting people to a barrage of questions and insinuations. We recommend Waiterock to everyone. We've been taking our dogs to Waiterock since 1996 and if anything, they've gotten better with time! We call Waiterock 'Camp Puppy' and when we tell our two labs we're going, they get so excited and run to the car. We know our dogs are being well cared for and get plently of outdoor play time, plus we have had consistently good interactions with the staff. We recently introduced a cat into our family and she goes, too (the cat room is great). read more

However, they really dropped the ball this time by not telling me promptly that they were fully booked for the time I wanted. I take my Norwich terrier here for daily dog care. She barks and runs to the door when we arrive because she loves Waiterock. Candace and Lauren are responsive and easy to talk to. The staff genuinely loves the dogs....that's obvious in the way they talk to and treat the dogs. There are play groups for the little dogs and they seem to enjoy each other. I am so happy I found Waiterock, before I did we looked at another place and my dog tried to pull me out of the office because the place smelled like fear. I recommend Waiterock highly. read more

I have 2 Australian Cattle Dogs and a Shi tzu. This is the second time that I boarded my dogs at Waiterock Kennels in the last 6 months. The facility is clean. My dogs come home happy. This time they groomed the Shi tzu and she looked great! I am extremely happy with this facility. read more

Don't think even a prepaid reservation will be honored at this kennel -- Waiterock Kennel might just tell you to find an alternate kennel when you go to dropoff your dog. I guess they oversold and didn't have room for my dogs even though I already paid for the holiday reservation. And on a holiday week, like Christmas or Thanksgiving or Easter, it's nearly impossible to find another spot for Fido. Better to reserve with a reliable kennel that honors reservations than to let Waiterock's misunderstanding of what a reservation is ruin your family vacation at the last minute. Oh, and check out their overkill vaccination policy, too -- they want you to superdrug your pet, contrary to veterinarian's recommendations. Yikes!!! read more

I left my cat and lab here for a week long stay a while back. I was very happy with the service I received. I'm always nervous to leave my babies for boarding, but the staff really put me at ease when I came and toured the kennel before I booked. The owner Candice gave me a tour and told me all about what they do day-to-day. My kitty stayed in her own condo in a room that's away from the dogs, so it's more quiet and peaceful. My lab was in an outdoor/indoor run that had A/C and misting to stay cool. They provide food and bedding, but accommodated me when I wanted to bring my own. My lab also got 2 play times a day, which helps alleviate me guilt from leaving him for a week because I know he's having fun! I got him a bath on the last day. Both were clean and happy when I picked them up. Will definitely use Waiterock again. Just make sure to book in advance for summer, they fill up quick! read more

Have used this kennel for grooming & boarding a few times, so my observation is not based on a one time incident. Attitude of staff needs a lot of improvement. Groomer is not a happy camper and does not smile at all. I asked that my Shihtzu get a puppy cut but came out looking like a gopher. Owner and front desk staff are not friendly at all. They do not return phone calls. When you do get ahold of them, they are outright rude. They insist on 6-month bordatella vaccinations. Manufacturer's recommendation is annual with a vaccine warranty stating that the pet is protected for 12 months. Waiterock staff don't understand that unnessary frequent bordatella vaccinations can cause major medical issues including decreased immune response with subsequent vaccinations as well as possible serious allergic reactions. True, AAHA guidelines recommend 6-month revaccinations for high risk patients, i.e. a shelter. If Waiterock is in fact a boarding facility as they say they are, pets admitted should not be classified as high risk. Also, they charge an extra 1/2 day if you pick up your pet after 12 noon. This was not disclosed to me until the time when I picked up my dog. They should have this 'rule' disclosed or posted clearly in their office. Again, I gave them a few opportunities, but they continue to show poor judgment in many areas. Very disappointing! I feel looked down when I come to this place. read more
