On 19 Aug 25, my wife heart beat was 172 and they took her in the back ASAP with 3 nurses and gave her meds for AFIB, waited a few hours had to shock twice and everything got better. Today, 21 Aug 25, her heart rate was in the 80's, but blood pressure was 206 over 96 and the triage lady that checks told her to have a seat. I told her to request to speak to a doctor but that same lady spoke to another lady next to her and then had my wife go to the back. The ER was packed on both sides and it is only Thursday.... Wake County Commissioner's need to have another facility available... The population is growing but the support structure is not growing with the population. read more

Whilst they're going in and out of other patients rooms unmasked and coming to you. Yesterday, I walked in for an appointment, (in which WakeMed screwed up the location.) I walk right past a security guard booth (an empty security guard booth). Right down a long hallway, into the imaging area. Door not locked, it's dark. Nobody around. For 15 min.... I had complete run of the place. If I cared to, I could get on their computers, or being a computer engineer, I could have slipped a device onto their network and captured their/your data. I could go through files if I so cared. NOBODY AROUND...... After about 15 min of sitting in the dark, an employee comes out and freaks out that I'm in the place, asking me how I got in. "I opened the door." I've had other very bizarre things happen at Wake Med. Several years ago, a blood vessel ruptured in my nose a month after some surgery. Bleeding all over the house in torrents. - Since Wake Med is close, I go there. After 45 min of bleeding profusely, in the emergency room, NOBODY CAME IN TO TREAT ME. My wife is screaming at the nurse to get a doctor.... (which was more interested in flirting with an EMT)... while a bleed out. The "Nurse" at WakeMed simply handed me a kidney shaped little bedpan to bleed into.... for 45 min.... and it was nearly full. I left and raced to another hospital where they immediately ran me in for emergency surgery. AVOID THIS "HOSPITAL". - I could go into detail about how they treated my wife a few years ago, but that would give you nightmares. I still have them, from that they put her through. (This is for Wake Med North).... I have no desire to go downtown for substandard care. Avoid avoid avoid. To anyone reading this.... If ever, I fall out of an airplane, on fire, slam into WakeMed's parking lot..... Drag me to Rex. read more

My fiancé came in at 12:30am having not eaten for 4 days, can't even drink water, severe stomach pain, vomiting blood (not red but black like coffee grounds) and chest pain. They immediately did an EKG which we knew would be fine then started bloodwork and gave him fluids in the lobby. They called him back not too long after and gave him some medicine, we talked to the PA and we got sent back out to the lobby around 3am. Right now it's 7:30am and when I finally went and asked I was told they were waiting on a room to discharge him with all kinds of abnormal lab results, still hurting, still nauseous and no answers. We came an hour from home thinking this was a better facility...WRONG!!! There's nothing emergent about this emergency room! read more

I've been in here for personal and work reasons quite a few times over the years I've been in Raleigh. They have done some serious upgrading to the look and layout of this facility. They also take patient health and comfort very seriously. The security team here is proud of what they do and pretty efficient. The cafeteria is well-staffed and is open until 1 a.m. There is a newer venue down in the Visitor's Center with a gift shop and a bistro-style place that serves sandwiches, soups and snacks. All in all this facility is a win for Raleigh. If you have to go here, whether as a patient or in support of one, you stand a good chance at getting some top-notch care with a caring support staff. read more

So I am very intrigued by the perplexity of this hospital. Clearly wake med is climbing to being an elite hospital. The rooms are very clean and the staff for the most part, are pleasant and curtious. All of the nurses listen better than I anticipated. And I love the PA as well as many of the docs. The only doctor I did not care for was a silver haired man whom has a name that matches his hair. He just seemed to not care as much as the rest of the amazing staff. read more

I am a nurse of 25 years and horrified at how unprofessional some of the nurses we encountered while admitted to 6A. The one which stands out the most was an Erica "Certified Nurse" who while caring for our mother stayed busy chatting with other staff and not once engaged with the patient. My husband was taken to Wake Med's ER after suffering a head injury. His head wound did not even require stitches, but they admitted him for observation. Then it seemed there was a constant stream of various doctors examining him and multiple tests being performed, none of which was explained to either my husband or me. So I complained to my husband's Wake Med case manager, who supposedly put into my husband's record that I was his spouse and needed to be informed about everything that was being done to him. Well, literally the very next day, my husband was seen by at least three doctors and had various tests performed (x-rays, CT scans), and not a single person called me to inform me what was going on! One of the doctors who saw my husband that day was a Hematologist who informed my husband that he had a terminal blood disorder and had only a few weeks to live! So this doctor gave my husband a death sentence and didn't think it was appropriate to inform the patient's spouse!! Outrageous!! Also, although the primary reason my husband was being kept in the hospital was due to this Hematology issue, officially my husband was assigned to the Trauma Surgery group because he had been admitted through the ER. Well, it was quite evident that the Trauma Surgery doctors had no interest in my husband or his problems, since he hadn't had any surgery, let alone stitches, and they didn't know much about Hematology. They didn't seem to care about the severe pain that my husband was having to endure. So I complained again to my husband's case manager and asked that he be reassigned as a patient of the Hematology group, since that was the real reason he was still in the hospital. The case manager informed me that that would be impossible, as it was contrary to Wake Med's procedures to change a patient's classification after being admitted. So Wake Med's inane bureaucratic rules were more important than the well-being of the patient! My husband died one week later, and I attribute his rapid decline to the poor care that he received at Wake Med. read more

Let me just say that the people here are amazing. My son, daughter, and all have been here as patients at some point. The Doctors, Nurses, Med Techs, all the way down to the janitors, the staff is amazing and professional. My most recent visit brought us in for my son. We visited another hospital whose triage staff proceeded to tell us our 10 ye. old son could be having a stroke or brain aneurysm and could be fixing to die but she wasn't going to fast track him through because the doctors didn't like when they did that for kids. After an hour and being told we were next like 4 times, we went to Wake Med. We checked in, triaged, had blood work and a CT scan, and met with doctors. They gave him meds and gave us follow up directions. They even called the next day to check on him. They will be my go to hospital from now on. The other hospital near Blue Ridge Rd. stay away from. read more

I want to thank Wake Med for finding out that my mom has a leaky aorta valve and congestive heart failure. She has been to two other hospitals in the last month that failed to find this out and still sent her home. Obviously, Wake Med is on the ball and pays attention to their patients. Had a terrible time with Dr. Shannon Matthews. She basically refused to listen to us and pressured us into a CT scan for my 1 year old son who was vomiting. She didn't even perform a physical exam on him or observe him when we were in the ER. Until it got late, my son was acting normal and even playing. He didn't have a fever or diarrhea so Dr. Matthews stated might have a brain injury from a common bump on his head. She refused to listen to us and started saying he could die. We were scared and ended up doing the CT scan which came back normal. I confronted her about it and she stated it was her job to pressure patients. I tried to give her some feedback about providing options especially since after the CT scan, she stated giving us other possibilities for my son's vomiting. Why weren't these discussed before the CT scan? I can't believe WakeMed employs such incompetent ER staff. Or they should have found someone with more experience with toddlers to help us since she believe a small bump could cause brain injury. read more
