10MAR24 This morning I had a salmon bagel so nice it knocked my socks off. Lox style set up with cream cheese, red onion, capers, tomatoes on a plain bagel. WtD was Mr R's haunt years ago and I vaguely remembered getting this before and that it was good. Still listed online so I asked to try it again as he was heading there for coffee. This one was so tasty and fresh I had to query Mr R about what he'd seen--maybe they were premade and stacked in the fridge but I got really lucky on the timing? Nope, he saw them slicing the onions themselves and putting the whole thing together. Generous serving, solid ingredients, well assembled for what can be a messy meal, worth the $14.50. Which makes me wonder about the jalapeño cheese kolache I'd enjoyed the day before. I'd assumed they sourced them elsewhere but was impressed with it. Perhaps they make them in house, I've no idea, I just know after 20sec in the microwave it smelled amazing and tasted great. Pepper throughout the sausage, enough cheese to satisfy without being egregious, tender pastry wrapped around it didn't seem to have been defrosted. Heck of a find that I got to enjoy only because Mr R needed to meet the $5 minimum to pay by card. Mr R had a jalapeño cheese bagel. It came with a shot of cream cheese on the side but they supplied butter when he requested it. He was very happy with it and always with their coffee. I can't speak to the coffee, hate the stuff, but based on these revisits you should have no fear about the vittles there. read more

DO NOT ORDER MATCHA I usually try to support family-owned businesses instead of places like Starbucks or Dutch Bros, but honestly this experience made me regret it. I ordered a matcha latte, which is my favorite drink, and it was so bad. It literally just tasted like milk with sugar. I barely took a sip before asking if I could exchange it or get something else, and they gave me such a hard time. They refused to make me something different and only offered to add more milk to what was already a watered-down drink. Since I needed to study, I just went with it, but after tasting it again, it was still terrible. So I ended up buying another drink (because they still wouldn't exchange it). The iced coffee I got was mid at best. Both drinks were $8.89 each, which felt like such a waste. Later I got hungry and ordered a soup and sandwich. The soup came out cold, and the sandwich was okay but super small. Honestly, this whole thing sucked. Back when my friend was going to Texas state U, this was our regular hang spot when I would go visit. I live in Austin, but this is a nice coffee shop that was always open late so we could sit and catch up and play games until 11 PM and it was no problem. It's an open space and I remember folks there always working/studying so seems good for that too if you're looking for a space to occupy and work. I would avoid this place at all costs. Some friends and I were in San Marcos on vacation and decided to stop by this place for coffee. The patio was absolutely beautiful but the service was terrible. The barista had horrible communication skills. My friend ordered an americano, and when he handed it to her she had a sip and asked if there was creamer in her americano. The barista very rudely responded by asking her if she knew what an americano is, because americano's are served black. My friend said yes she knew what an americano was but that her drink tasted creamy. When she opened up her drink guess what was in it? Creamer. As if things couldn't get any worse, we also ordered some food and after waiting for a while we went to check on the status of the food and the barista says "you never ordered any" Uhm, yes we did. We didn't feel like arguing so we asked if we could order the food again, to which the response was "we are sold out now". Overall it was the weirdest experience I've had at a coffee shop and the coffee was less than great. read more

Popped in here on my way out of San Marcos because I needed a caffeine fix stat! So, the parking here is pretty much impossible as the lot that is attached has room for 5 maybe six cars (including a handicap parking spot). I parked along the ramp and put my blinkers on because I suspected I would be less than 10 mins (I was in and out in about 5) and did not have the time to go parking scouting along the already very crowded and unlit side street. That being said, this place is very thematic, and that in and of itself lends a sort of endearing charm that makes you want to come here just to see what weird or comically macabre decoration you might find while waiting for your order. The barista was so nice and though I was in a hurry, I told her I had never been and asked her for some recs. She suggested the Iced Toddy (their cold brew) since it was VERY caffeinated. I usually get an americano w/an extra shot if I am in dire need of a kickstart, but a coldbrew just sounded good and when a barista gets excited about a rec they make, you figure it has got to be good. Sadly, I wish I would have gone w/my americano. While the toddy was ok and def had some caffeine, it was lacking the robust bite that I love from my coldbrews. I will definitely stop back in when time is not a factor to try their americano (because I judge most coffee shops by their espresso anyway) and maybe a pastry and take in more of the decor and patio. read more

Been coming to this place ten years. I have brought my dog the last 4 years, a ten pound dog that suffers from great separation anxiety. We were ordered out in an unfriendly way in spite of a so-called "dog friendly" policy. It was raining outside but made it to the old car ok. Plenty of other places in this town where small dogs are allowed and the coffee is as good but cheaper. One place is a worldwide chain. Goodbye Wake Dead. The coffee here is okay. Wake The Dead Coffee House is a bit hard to find because it just looks like a plain shack somewhere along Ranch Road. Studying here isn't bad because it's almost silent inside, but I get a feeling of unfriendliness because so many of the stickers on the tables say that you absolutely need to buy something in order to use the wifi. Which isn't even locked in the first place. The parking here sucks because their lot is so small. It's not an easy fix to park somewhere else because the apartments nearby are far walks from Wake The Dead. read more

Very Austiny, I love the vibe of this funky place. Great patio with lots of tree shade, very pleasant atmosphere and good music to work with. The coffee is good and they have baked goods at reasonable prices. The cons are that there's no bathroom now (you have to walk to the 7-11 next door) , there's no indoor seating, and there are few plugs outside, but they have power strips you can use. The patio is fantastic on a nice day otherwise , really really nice. read more
