I cannot believe I was not familiar with this Saint Paul gem. My spouse had found Waldman listed as one of the best patios in the Twin Cities. They deserve to be on that list. Stumbled upon this cool brewery with my in-laws. As soon as you walk in it takes you back to the late 1700's if that's what it looked like back then. It reminded me of one of those east coast pubs that takes you back to colonial time. That's the ambience. Drinks - we all had different beverages. A bunch of us had beer and others had wine. I had a rose and it was great. Food - we had the Ploughman platter. It was delish and everything was so fresh. The different mustards are really interesting too. Definitely start with the freshly baked Biergarten pretzel with mustard and cheese dips. Yum! I had the chicken schnitzel, and was surprised when I got a fat chicken breast instead of a thinly pounded piece of meat as I've had before in Germany. But it was juicy and crispy, so also good. The tender, fluffy spaetzle tastes light and buttery, with a sprinkle of fresh herbs. We also had the käsespätzle with bratwurst; which my husband likes. My husband and I were attending a concert in St. Paul, so we decided to head to Waldmann's German restaurant and brewery...based on reviews from none other than...Yelp itself! :D I'm not typically a huge fan of German cuisine, so I was a little reluctant, but my husband talked me into it, and I'm really glad he did! We decided to order the wurst plate and the käsespätzle and split them, and to my surprise, the dishes were absolutely delicious. The wurst plate had a yummy sausage (we got the vegetarian one) that was cooked to perfection and super tasty, even though it was vegetarian (I'm the meat eater in our duo). The käsespätzle, a cheesy German noodle dish, was equally amazing - I'd never had it before and was very impressed - definitely not mac and cheese! Our server really took care of us - stopping by several times to make sure our drinks were refilled, etc. One of the highlights of our visit was the outdoor seating and live bluegrass music - and the weather happened to be really nice to top it off. This place is everything! The ambience- adorable and cozy, the staff- helpful, the beer- perfection, and the food- chefs kiss! I wish I lived closer but even the 40min drive from my house is worth a visit to Waldmann. There aren't many places you can go anymore where you truly get to have a curated, yet relaxed experience. This is a place you must try! I was transported back in time with the musicians that were playing traditional music. They have an incredible place indoors but their patio is super cute and has large wooden tables. For parking you'll have to do street parking so keep that in mind. This is a dog friendly place as well you just have to enter through the patio. I came here to order the pretzel but after much thought I figured I'd try the smoked trout dip and save the pretzel for when I bring my kids. It was an AMAMAMAMAZINGGGGG dish. It truly does make you want to eat your vegetables even tho I should do that more often. I had the cheeseburger and shockingly enough it was quiet light. My thought is that it has to do with the type of bun they use which taste more earthy. If you do some sort of sandwich pair it with their potato salad because it's delicious. I tried the pulled pork as well and it had such great flavor. That dish had the roasted potatoes which made me more convinced the way to go is potato salad. I do love that they offer special non alcoholic drinks and I was able to enjoy a sparkling drink with their home made berry syrup. I can't wait to come back and try their pretzel and cheese board. Another stop at Waldmann's to use our pubpass and another great experience. We had our grand pup with us and she was quite relaxed here as well. Their patio is lovely. Most parties share a table with other parties. We found a table near the back fence which gave our dog a little more room. I chose the Bordeaux wine which was very good...deep, rich berry taste. I had a craving for spaetzle and ordered that with a brat. It was good but a little too brown and white for me. Needed a veggie of some sort to color up the meal. Husband had the walleye. It was delicious and very beautifully presented. Even the people next to us were asking 'what is that, it looks delicious'. I also loved the win glasses. Need to buy some of those for my own personal use. We were there early and it was packed. Also parking is a bear so be prepared to drive around or walk a bit. read more

It's the literal version of meat and potatoes. We had the wurst plate of brat and curry. The brats were fine. The curry presence was there but did not overwhelm. The "real" mash potatoes were second to none so was the garlic mushrooms. Minneapolis likes dips with the fresh pretzels and you can't go wrong with that same with the Pilsner. I love this spot! We had to do street parking which wasn't a huge deal. I wanted to give my partner an "authentic German experience," and decided on this brewery. The food is simple and delicious. I ordered a vegan bratwurst and my partner ordered the classic bratwurst with mustard and sauerkraut. The mustard is more like crushed mustard seeds with oil and seasoning rather than a typical American mustard from the bottle which was fun!! The seating is amazing. One of my favorite breweries I've been to (and I've been to too many lol)!! First of all, St. Paul is a beautiful city. Not quite the crazy hip party going type of city, but still giving great vibes. WALDMAN is right next to a bridge that overlooks the part of the city and a river. Nice to walk down to anticipate the amount of calories you'll be drinking. This building is straight out of history! It was built in 1857. The floors are the original! The building itself is a must-see. We stopped by for snacks .. 2 hour snacks.. lol We enjoyed the company of our great server, Cory. Fun place that allows dogs and has some good brews! We stopped in here because we got the Sidewalk dog version of the pub pass and they were included. The staff was super friendly. It's mostly a German menu and even a lot of their wines are German imports! They were a little bit spendy depending on what you were getting, but most of their food and their beer is reasonably priced and tasty. The pretzel was great! Be careful of the horseradish mustard though, I'm a huge horseradish fan and it still burned some of my nose hairs out! read more

Having been built in 1857, six months before Minnesota became a state, and nearly four years before the Civil War began - every board in offers a glimpse into its rich history. Rumor has it, there's a rather iconic bison mount upstairs that I sadly didn't get to see. ++ You're seeking a killer patio space that checks all the boxes! This patio is huge. There's a ton of tables (both individual and community style), string lights help to light things up at night, and fire pits will help to keep you warm. ++ You yearn for a modern take on classic beer styles! Sometimes less is more. Waldmann Brewery offers up a relatively smaller selection of brews, but you can tell they strive for perfection in those brews. Be warned that they follow metric sizes, but will gladly help you pick the size you want. I opted to sip on a half liter of their pilsner. If a restaurant a nail the spaetzle, then that place is special. When a Brewery does it, watch out! And Waldman does just that. Truth is this brewery has a lot going for, not the least of which is the stellar location, an obviously old and historical building that only adds to the German-esque feel of the place. Off the top of my head, I don't recall any of the beers. That's not a knock. What I had was good, most likely a Hefe. It matters little for this review. Hands down this is one of my go-to breweries every time I visit my family in MSP. I've loved German beers since I visited Germany in 2001 for a month, and Waldmann delivers top notch German biers. The beer was definitely German style so know what you're going into before you get there of course but overall we found a few favorites within the flights. They actually have a large sized menu of stuff to choose from. We settled for a pretzel with mustard and added the cheese on the side. + pickled cucumbers which I will never say bad things about. The pretzel was smaller than I expected - maybe an Instagram vs realty thing. The mustards were great (berry mustard was one flavor) but the cheese disappointed me. I expected more of a beer cheese style dipping, this one reminded us of the same consistency of cheese crackers when we were younger. Did we still eat it though? Duh! It's cheese! The patio was large and had plenty of room for seating, this is truly the perfect patio area and place for fall Oktoberfest vibes. We were hoping to explore inside but it seems like due to Covid they maybe aren't letting people sit inside? Or maybe that's how it's always been here? The beer is fabulous and the food is even better! I still dream of the herb spatzle! And all of the wurst's are the best!! The garlic one of the day I went was my favorite. Truly authentic German place with a wide selection on their menu. It's also located in a cute house right behind bad weather so you can do a little brewery hopping like we did :D We got takeout since dogs aren't allowed inside, but only outside on their patio. The hostess was very nice and even gave us seat pads for us while we drank our beer and coffee outside, both of which were great. We got the wurst basket with a jalapeno cheddar brat and potato salad - a big helping of sauerkraut was on the brat and the spicy - sourness was a fun combo. We got the jumbo pretzel with this heavier cheese sauce which I didn't think went together that well since it felt dry but both tasted good on their own. I ended up dipping the pretzel in their yummy honey mustard :) I'd definitely return again to order something different and recommend it to anyone who loves German food! read more

I think I just found my new favorite brewery. This place is a nice little hideaway in St. Paul. Because my best furry friend was with me, I didn't get to see the inside, but the patio is BEAUTIFUL and spacious. I love the vibes of this place! I got a Hefeweizen, which is always a favorite of mine when it's available at breweries. This one did not disappoint! My friend got the berry hard seltzer, and I'm definitely getting that next time. The berries were freshly muddled and bright on the palette, and the drink itself was refreshing! For food, I got the brown butter spaetzle. It came out so fast and was so good. Great herbs on it! I also got to try the pretzel, which is massive and had a gorgeous berry dipping sauce (a welcome treat since I'm not the biggest mustard fan!). Next time, I want to order the pretzel with the cheese sauce. For dessert, we split the berry strudel. I don't know how they make the whipped cream, but it was my favorite whipped cream I've ever had. The strudel itself was crispy, stuffed with berries, and so flavorful. This is a great date night spot, but it's also a great family spot. We saw plenty of both while we were there. I'll definitely be back! read more

This quaint brewery occupies an 18th century building that was once home to a saloon. The food was the kind of food that is stick to your ribs good including the chicken schnitzel. Had a wonderful dinner out on the dog friendly patio. The servers were fantastic. My husband has the chicken schnitzel and I had the kasespaetzle with a bratwurst. The sauce on the schnitzel was tasty! The spaetzle was surprisingly refreshing and tasty. I tend toward a more pungent palate so was expecting some bland meat and potatoes style food. ERMIGERD! Splurged on the Waldmann CSB, and just -wow- ... Previously had stuck to the handhelds for the most part. This was a surprising and pleasant elevation of their food experience. Chef Natalie has some serious skill. Take, for example, that pretty much everything stuck within themes of flavor, where she took fairly ordinary ingredients and made them shine. So with nothing exotic and everything seeming to fit within the Waldmann palette, these feasts demonstrated inspiration and passion for the food. It's almost as if you could taste that inspiration and passion. All four of our 3-course meals were distinct from one another. We both felt satiated without feeling too heavy or bogged down despite the decadence and richness. I usually shy away from desserts, finding them disappointingly sweet and lacking of flavor- not true of Waldmann! The desserts were also bomb. Even though this is a popular place, the waiter was quick to get our orders in and serve us our food and drinks. My boyfriend ordered the portobello sandwich: if you like mushrooms, you'll really like this. He did, however, think the mushroom eventually felt a little overwhelming. I ordered the würst plate and enjoyed everything but the mustard sauce on the side, which was extremely bitter. It's a sizable plate, but I was able to easily eat the whole thing. What a unique taproom in downtown St. Paul. Great change from the industrial look most taps have adopted. Housed in the oldest commercial building in St. Paul, this brewery has three levels each with a different feel. The main level has a bar and table seating and then you can go upstairs to a split level arrangement with tables on each level. There is also patio seating. The beer is very good! We tried the dunkel, the German farmhouse ale and their Oktoberfest. All really well made and would have loved to have tried more. They serve food on site. It looks like a German centric menu with a lot of sausage and a smoked fish plate as well. We did not order food but will do so on our next trip. Highly recommend this taproom for great beers and unique setting. Within walking distance of the Xcel center too. read more
