It wasn't the greatest atmosphere but my wife said the German food was a lot like her grandmother's. We shared a sampler plate. It was more food that could eat but we did anyway. Personally I wouldn't order the sampler plate again but I would go back for more items from their German menu. The sampler plate is a very good value and there German potato salad is outstanding. It was anying when the waitress removed the mustard from the table while I was still eating. I do wish it was closer. read more

Was there on Tuesday the 26th with two friends of mine? I grew up in Hastings. In fact, I actually worked at the beer tube a long time ago as a dishwasher worked my way to bartending. it was when Larry and Hilda was still alive on the 26th one friend ordered a hamburger the other I ordered two hot ham and brown brought buns fries to go along with that. I know how things are supposed to be there very disappointed in the food. hand wasn't even put on my bun correctly. My french fries were lukewarm (depressing.) I said something to the gave me seven dollars sandwich and she also told me if I wanted to complain to go complain to the cook. She had no control over it. I realize that that she don't! There was no one in the restaurant I would think a manager would like to know what their employees are doing not doing. I will think twice about going back there!!!!!! We continue our Lenten fish fry tour. Bierstube is on the Minneapolis-St. Paul magazine recommended list. We walk into this new-to-us place, look around and one of the regulars at the bar directed us to sit anywhere. We picked a booth and a server greeted us soon after. We ordered a couple Hefeweizen's, they were tall and cold, good stuff. We opted for the all-you-can-eat fish fry. We were so full from the 2 big pieces we each got that we ended up downsizing our order. The batter was light and crispy and the fish was flaky. The meal also came with cole slaw, fries and a chargrilled hot dog bun. Out of the several fish fry's we have tried Bierstube is at the top of our list. read more

I do really like this place. It is dark and old and the Paulaner Heffeweizen is oh so drinkable. I indulged in two glasses in the middle of my day and don't feel one ounce of guilt over it. I ordered the Liver Steak---I ate it but would not order again because I myself like a thin cut of liver ---it was 12 and did not come with anything but a toasted brat bun and some onions and a few slices of bacon. If you need more carbs (believe me I do!) you have to spend another 3-4 dollars for a side and I think that is getting a bit much compared to other selections on the menu. If you go on the weekends you can possibly get some more family made authentic German dishes. So I would make that a goal if you are planning a trip. My server was friendly and prompt. read more

My wife and I took a trip to Hastings for apple picking and we're always on the lookout for great restaurants in the areas we visit - Bierstube proved to be one of the great ones. We seated ourselves in a booth, which is quite normal for small bar and grill style restaurants in Minnesota. It was lunch time and there were plenty of other customers at the bar and surrounding booths but our waitress was ready to take our order within a minute or two of us being seated. We ordered the cheese curds for appetizer and I had a 22oz Paulaner Oktoberfest. The order of cheese curds was huge and tasty, plenty to satisfy. The beer arrived in a chilled glass mug as it should. So many places I have been to fail to chill their glasses and that can ruin a beer experience. My wife and I decided to split A Taste of Duetschland and it is more than enough food for two. I loved the spaetzle. The sauerbraten and schwein haxen was tender and full of flavor. The bratwurst was what you'd expect, a giant smoked beef sausage, with hot horseradish mustard on the side. The dish also comes with sauerkraut, red cabbage and german gravy - all delicious. Overall a wonderful dining experience and we look forward to visting Bierstube again. read more

Tried out this place after going on a little roadtrip down toward Hastings and looking for somewhere to have breakfast. When we got there we didn't realize that it was a buffet, but decided to give it a try. They had the buffet set up in another room and they had a number of choices, most of which were standard breakfast fare. They did also have a green bean casserole and some cheesy asparagus, but I wasn't really sure how those fit in with everything else? The cheesy hashbrowns were terrific, and I loved the taste of their bacon and could have eaten a whole plate of that! You can also order pancakes or French toast (which is included), or for $2 more you can have a special order omelette. The buffet was under $10 which is a terrific price especially for a buffet. As far as service, the server was attentive and very friendly. She was quite a character as we listened to her trying to encourage people to eat or get more food :). The atmosphere is long time neighborhood bar which was nice and comfortable. It can be a little confusing to find because the way it's situated in the strip mall (around the side) but not too bad. I haven't tried it for lunch, dinner, or drinks but maybe another time. read more

Made the drive to Hastings from Burnsville to give my parents a taste of Germany while they were in town visiting. It's true from the previous posts that it's a locals bar. Everyone at the bar tops were regulars and definitely knew each other. We happened to be there during a Vikings game so that helped the ambiance! The service was okay. Not the most amazing but it wasn't horrible. They definitely pay the regulars more attention. The food portions are pretty legit. The overall taste was good. I got a burger that wasn't really cooked as much as I like and the waitress took it back and had it cooked more but she kinda snatched out which was unexpected. I can't say I'll make the drive again unless my parents visit again and suggest it. I wouldn't definitely suggest going there for some good German food! read more

Bierstube is a classic. I've come here numerous times over the last two decades. I haven't been in awhile, so last Thursday the Prince and I went for dinner. It was a bingo and meat raffle night! We skipped the meat raffle but definitely played Bingo. The meat was from Duffs and worth the raffle game, but I'm at capacity for freezer space! A must have at Bierstube is a basket of the garlic bread- mixed. You get white and pumpernickel slices covered in butter and the mystery powder that might as well be crack. For our appetizer we opted for cheese curds rather than fried cauliflower or the Reuben balls. I love their fried cauliflower. The cheese curds were good, it had a thicker breading, almost like a chicken tender type breading. I prefer a crispy beer battered curd, but these will work. The Prince loved them and you get a TON! He ordered the kids chicken fingers and was unimpressed, which was strange because he's had them there before. But chicken fingers isn't their game. It's the burgers and steaks that you want to eat at Bierstube. I ordered a Reuben burger and thoroughly enjoyed it. I erroneously said "well done" when asked about my burger. I must have had a mental mishap. I'm not usually a well done burger person, but they will do it however you please. The steak is a good choice and not insanely spendy. Their wide selection of apps is appealing. They have good beers and older cranky waitresses to be sure and keep it small-town-old-school-cool. Head to the "stube" and don't miss bingo night with the man who works the crowd in overalls. He livens up the place and makes everyone feel welcome. The Bierstube, with 5 locations. This is the original. Built in 1962. I read that, plus more about all the 'stubes, on the front cover of the menu. It's a good read. Alyssa R & I have been to two other locations. This was our first visit to the original. It's not hard to find, being on the junction of highways 55 & 61, in Hastings. We parked behind & across the street in a free city lot. We came in through, what we found out was, a side entrance. This side door enters right in front of the kitchen, and into the bar. The bar was busy, with every booth taken, and all but one round table with 6 chairs, full. We walk through to the main door, looking to see if it's a seat yourself, or not. I'm not sure what the answer is, because just as we got to the front, which is also the entrance to the bar area, an older couple sitting in a two person booth, waved us over to the two person booth right behind them, which was open. I was under a picture of the '02 Twins. First team since '91 WS champs to make the playoffs. It was titled, "A Season to Remember". More sports bar themed, than German themed we thought. The food menus were located at the table, so none needed to be dropped off. I read about the history of the Bierstube, and admired the interior for a few minutes. We had a light fixture on the wall, lighting the table, straight from 1962. Every table within eye sight was eating the All-You-Can-Eat Friday Night Fish Fry. Julie came back, without the drinks, asking us if we knew what we wanted to eat. Alyssa R ordered for us both. Fish Fry's. She thanked us, and scampered away. About one minute later, she dropped off a couple of salad bowls of dry coleslaw. She also left us a squeeze bottle of coleslaw dressing. I guess that's how they roll here. You get to make how wet or how dry you like your coleslaw. Not a bad idea. It was good, too. Tangy & fresh! Great crunch to the slaw. A minute after that, our mugs of beers arrive. Alright. Now things are going on. We didn't have to wait long for our suppers to arrive. First impression. Kinda messy plate presentation. The two pieces of beer battered cod was mostly covered by the fries on the plate. Should be the other way around. Fish on top of fries. The fries were steak fries. The thick cut kind. We also got a hogie bun swiped with butter and grilled. My wife had to ask for lemon. We got a plastic ramekin of tartar sauce. Once we got our fish lemoned and fries salted, we dig in. Good flavor! Nice beer batter taste to the fish. Not too thick. Not too thin. Cod was white & flaky. Steak fries were different to a fish fry. They were alright. The hogie bun? Garlic toast, I guess? You could make a fish sandwich out of your dinner. The hogie bun, two pieces of fish, coleslaw, tartar sauce schmeer. We did a reorder of three pieces between us. I took two. Alyssa R, one. They came real quick. Less than a minute. They also came with lemon & tartar sauce. Good job by Julie. One piece of mine was really thick on one end. This made it underdone on that side. Shame too. Could have been a pleasant piece to eat. I ordered one more piece because of that. We got our bill, and it totaled just under 39 bucks after tax. The AYCE Fish Fry was 13 bucks. Just a little high. I felt 11.50-12 bucks should have been the price point. Still, not too bad, though. Out of, now, the three Bierstubes my wife & I have been to. This was the best one. Something about the original will do that, though. I think we would return. But maybe after we try the 60 or so other All-You-Can-Eat Friday Night Fish Fry's around the metro first. read more

This was the first place I stopped to eat once I arrived in town and with it being a German themed bar/ restaurant you would expect it to be traditional. Well I sat at the bar and the staff was pretty busy and the bar was too. So I waited a few minutes before the bartender even said anything to me. (Not a big deal) I understand being busy. So I ordered a water and a Mountain dew. I looked over the menu and could determine what to order. So I asked the bartender I ended up ordering a sausage something and it was absolutely amazing. I've been back to this place several times and have had several different things that I couldn't pronounce but they have all been great. The server was nice but that was it. I ordered a dinner salad and when it arrives I thought that I was being pranked. There was not a forkful of green on my plate. Seriously it was all of the white core of a head of Iceberg lettuce . No tomatoes and one slice of cucumber that was mushy. It was the Charley Brown Christmas Tree of salads. The decor was old and dark. Seventies music was playing out of the one sorry little speaker in our room. I have never been so happy to leave a restaurant.
