On a looooooong road trip all the way to Arizona, my husband and I saw signs for clean restrooms and tasty barbecue. We decided to check out Wally's because not only had we never been, but we'd never heard of them either and we love trying new things. Their site boasts that they have 72+ gas pumps and 20 stalls in the women's restrooms, as well as a jerky bar and carving station. Based on the site alone, I was expecting a midwestern version of Bucc-ee's. Walking in my expectations were met. Clean bathrooms, lots of food options and a nice selection of clothing. My husband got a brisket sandwich, hot dog, and a drink. He said $3 for the hot dog was definitely worth it as the hot dog was delicious, but he hasn't eaten the brisket sandwich as of now. I got a pulled pork sandwich and drink. The pulled pork sandwich was $7, and honestly how it looked didn't get me excited, but as soon as I bit into it my mind had been changed. Never heard of this place but saw a sign advertising it when we were north of Dixon, Illinois. We have been to many Buccee's so this is a Buccee wannabe. It is smaller with not as many gas pumps, merchandise, bathrooms, etc. Much easier to find your family if you lose them! The place is very clean & the employees are very nice. They sell breakfast sandwiches & granola with yogurt for breakfast. Looks like they have brisket tacos & bbq for lunch. They even have a pressed penny machine! On our recent cross country road trip, we stopped at Wally's twice. We stopped and got food and used the facilities both times. The first time, we both got the Italian beef sandwich. The bread was the right kind of chewiness, but there was cheese on the sandwich, which neither of us wanted. The sandwich could use more peppers or a side of giardineira, which wasn't available. We also had the house made chips, coffee (blueberry--don't get it) and ice tea (it was very cloudy, likely older batch). The second time, we both got fried fish sandwiches. The sandwich was huge, and we should have just shared one. There was still cheese, but we could at least scrape it off. The sandwich has coleslaw, too. It was super filling and the fish was flaky and pleasant, but don't expect it to be crunchy if it isn't made right then. Every time, bathrooms are clean, the place is bright and cheery. The first time we went there years ago, the people working were super peppy and happy. That isn't much the case anymore. This trip, all of the workers seem sad and despondent. Wally's is more than a gas station if you haven't figured that out yet. It is an experience that can only be rivaled with Buckys. I am so glad we have a Wally's on the way to Chicago and outside of St. Louis. I truly enjoy the clean restrooms, large variety of fountain drinks, and delicious food. If you're looking for something unique, there's plenty of souvenirs. The staff has always been so kind and helpful. If I were to recommend anything for Wally would be too up the bakery department in the morning time and offer donuts. They're much easier to eat on the road than a muffin. read more

I was excited to stop here and use a clean restroom since the store appeared fairly new. The store itself was very nice and clean, and I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of food options available. It's great to have multiple choices instead of being limited to just one type of food. However, the food quality did not match the prices being charged. My chicken biscuit was extremely dry, especially disappointing given the higher price point. Unfortunately, I didn't realize how dry it was until I was already back on the road, and turning around was not an option since I was on a time limit. My coffee also tasted very old and stale, which was another letdown. For a newer location that clearly puts effort into the appearance and selection, I expected the food and coffee quality to reflect that. Wally's is everything a gas station should be. It's legitimately a destination itself, and it's the best gas station I've ever visited. The bathrooms are spotless, the food is top notch, and they have enough grocery items and other merchandise to make me feel like I'm in a grocery store instead of a gas station. I've never been to a Buccee's but assumed this was the same type of place. I know i needed gas and saw the sign for it from I-55 as I was heading to St. Louis, so I figured it was as good as any place to stop. Man, was I wrong. It was huge! I walked in the front door and was immediately hit with the cleanest gas station I have ever been to. And the amount of merchandise alone was insane. I think this place is there to provision people who are traveling by RV or camping as there were a ton of camping supplies, games that didn't require electricity, warmer weather clothing, toys, etc. And if one ever wanted a souvenir from a "truck stop" then this place has got you covered. How can you stop here and not get something with their name on it. Heck, I got a Wally the bear(?) stuffed animal and my son is 20, so it's now another piece of traveling history for my home office. I also didn't know that Wally's was a stop along Route 66 either. So there's a piece o'history for ya! There is a large food mart in the back half of the store. I looked up Wally's online to see what I should get, so I sampled a few things: 1) Popcorn Bar: I got their cheese corn. It was just okay. When you've grown up with Garret's popcorn, it's hard to come close. 2) Beef Jerky Bar: I got the original and it was tender. So many to choose from, but the best for comparison is original flavor and I always vote high on tenderness and these did not destroy my teeth. Point for Gryffendor! 3) Gourmet Coffe & Beverage Bar: I am not a coffee guy, so I got a pop from their version of the Big Gulp. This this was so big I almost got their jumbo tumbler but opted against it as there are no other locations near me and I don't anticipate driving to St. Louis again in the near future. 4) Wally's BBQ Pit: Or whatever it is called. It was still early-ish in the morning, so I didn't get a bbq sandwich. I saw them being made. All the bread was laid out and they were using an ice cream scooper to dole out the heaping mounds of pulled pork (I think) onto the bread. It was kind of a turn off for me, but it smelled wonderful. The grocery area had a lot of snack and drink options available. There was so much, in fact, that some of the racks were duplicates of the aisles across from them. If it were me, I'd put different options there. Nothing says a gas station like the diagonally cut turkey and cheese or ham and cheese sandwiches for like six bucks. I made my own pit stop (if ya know what I mean) and again, the cleanest bathroom at a gas station ever. It was a cool place to stop, if for just the one time to say I stopped at a Wally's. Been to Bucc-ees. Perfectly happy with Wallys. It's a ways from my house but under an hour. And yes, it is a knock off of the famed chain, but what I like about it is: there's far less people. Sure, there's less merchandise, but that's not my thing. There's plenty of food, beverages, and a few knickknacks and the washroom is clean and the gas prices are low. Works for me perfectly.. I don't need the throngs of people traipsing through while I'm in there trying to do my thing. read more

So, on our road trip to Bloomington, Illinois, we stumbled upon this really cool place, it totally caught our eye! We rolled in around 5:30 am, and, well, half the store was still asleep. Some doors were locked, which was a little funny. But we still managed to grab some breakfast sandwiches and drinks. The jerky and bakery sections were closed, unfortunately bummer, I was looking forward to trying the popcorn. It reminded me a lot of Buc-ee's which is awesome since we don't have them in Illinois! On the way back, we stopped again, and this time the place was in full swing! I got a sweet tea, but it wasn't the best maybe it was the water? We did snag two giant cinnamon caramel rolls though,they were out of the regular ones. The original popcorn was delicious, but the Chicago-style? Not so much! The Wally's shirts were a bit of a letdown just a plain shirt with a "66" on it. Nothing special. The hats, though? Quite a few high quality brands like GOALZERO, Lodge, SOLO stoves/fire pits that you wouldn't expect at a normal convenience store. We stopped late at night, so the in-store areas were not really operating, but there was a bakery, jerky counter, popcorn counter, barbecue counter and cafe for custom drinks. I love Wally's! I was so happy when I first saw this along the highway. It immediately reminded me of Buck-ee's, which is famous in Texas for being huge, accommodating, and having incredible amenities and selection. Well, Wally's is much the same. There are an abundance of gas pumps, and the building is super large. There are multiple food stations, my favorite being the jerky counter. I also enjoy the coffee taps; where you can try samples. Next time I go, I want to try the BBQ. The bathrooms are large and have plenty of urinals and stalls. The sinks are fancy with the water, soap, and dryer all built in. There is also a large merchandise section, with lots of fun shirts and home decor. I really like the Great American Road Trip theme they have going on, which brings me nostalgia about road tripping with family as a kid. I stopped here for gas and a potty break. It's not a fast stop because this place is huge! There are lots of people walking around just kind of in a daze. Not me, I want the restroom and maybe a snack. There are TONS of snacks here. They have a BBQ station, a coffee station, a spot that makes fresh popcorn (it's not garretts but it's good) and many beverages. Perhaps I missed a few things, but I was on a mission. I had more time on my second visit and scored some good food for lunch. I got 3 hard boiled eggs for $3 and a container of cantaloupe and honey dew melon for $3. The strawberries were $5 but also looked good. They have salads and other healthy options as well. If you are gluten free like me, this is a great stop! If you need a clean bathroom and a variety of snacks, this is your place. Remember that it's not a quick stop, so plan your road trip accordingly! read more

Wow, now that is a fuel station. More of a destination than a place to stop for gas. Lots of pumps to fill your tank, EV charging, Trucker / RV parking. Easy access off the interstate. When we walked in if feels like it goes on forever. We tried the made to order sandwiches. I got the ham and cheese, my son got the cheddar turkey, and my other son got the chicken nuggets. Brayden said the turkey sandwich had some kind of jam on it that really made it fantastic. Not what you would normally expect from a gas station. Definitely a place to visit if you're running on I55. I forgot the most important thing. When it's freezing outside the last thing you want to do when fueling your vehicle is answer questions about a car wash, receipt or anything. All you want to do is start pumping gas and get back in the car. 5 stars for this alone. I waved my card at the reader at the pump, selected premium and it started pumping gas. It's not as large as the one in Fenton, MO. That's understandable, this is the prototype. I expected it to be smaller. What I didn't expect was the lack of pizza. I drove all the way from St. Louis looking forward to a slice of Wally's pizza and came up empty. It also shares a problem that Buc-ee's has - no caffeine free diet fountain drinks. The restrooms are smaller and not as fancy as my local Wally's. These do seem to be in the process of being upgraded, so they may not be less fancy for long. I'll plan on stopping for gas the next time I'm up this way, but I'll be looking elsewhere for food. read more

Go here instead of the nearby rest stops, you'll be happy you did. Wally's is huge. They have multiple banks of gas pumps and entrances on three sides of the building. Inside, they have a large hot food area with good bbq sandwiches, tea and coffee, popcorn, a beef jerky and snack stick counter and some other stuff. Their jerky and snack sticks are also available packaged, alongside all kinds of chips, candy, and the largest fountain drink selection I've ever seen. They have camping equipment, bbq supplies, and lots of t-shirts and coffee mugs. The restrooms are large, clean and well maintained. The best way I can describe this place is it's like the biggest, cleanest Stuckeys you've ever seen with a much larger selection of merch. They have self checkout alongside the clerks, pick whichever you like. Skip the nearby rest stops and other gas stations and visit Wally's instead. You will thank me. read more

Although we have one in the metro St Louis area, I never had a reason to go to that location. On my drive back from Chicago, I decided to stop into the one in Pontiac, IL. A see of endless choices of soda, chips popcorn and a whole humongous wall dedicated to jerky. There was a bakery in there, a BBQ station , a coffee bar and other bars and stations I cant even remember. The employees were friendly and the restrooms were huge and spotless clean. Only 2 people at the pumps when I went early in the morning. I've never been in Buc-ees when there wasn't a crowd, like Christmas crowd. Not impressed with the breakfast brisket taco, the ultimate crescent breakfast sandwich not impressed. Bucees would already have put them in the trash from the timestamp. Many stalls without tp, stuff on the floor, clogged toilet...Wanted to buy popcorn, but there was no ingredients listed, so couldn't take the chance it had one of our allergens. Holidays and travel go together like peanut butter and jelly! Thankfully Wally's is right along my most frequented route to family. Driving on route 55, it's next to impossible to miss Wally's. This massive complex is truly a roadside destination. So what makes Wally's different from other gas stations? Let's start with the most obvious. Cleanliness. This place is spotless. From the gas pumps to the bathrooms, you will be hard pressed to find a mess at Wally's. I can be a total germaphobe, and I felt so comfortable when we stopped for gas. They really do a great job keeping the complex clean. While using the restroom, there was an attendant cleaning. It seems like that may have been his only job too. (Shout out to whomever designed the bathroom. Love when bathrooms have floor to ceiling walls between stalls!) Selection. That's the next thing that really sets Wally's apart. Not only did Wally's offer an entire wall of jerky, you can also get basically any camping item you might need. It was basically like a sporting goods store inside a gas station. I thought it was so smart to offer things like coolers and camping equipment travelers may have forgotten to pack. They also had more sodas in the fountains than I think I knew existed. And the other thing that really makes Wally's special is their retro branding. They really took time to create a nostalgic vibe from the moment you pulled in. There were so many cool touch points that made you feel like Wally's stepped right out of the 60's. They even had retro branding on the soda fountains! This time I also had the brisket which was a little better. Brisket is hard to maintain quality. High turnover of product is necessary. Unfortunately, they are not selling enough or they do not monitor how long the product sits out. This time it really hit me how unfriendly and unhelpful the employees were.
