I had an absolutely horrible experience with Route 66 Towing LLC in Pontiac. We called them Sunday…read moremorning after I accidentally locked my keys in my car at Walmart. We had no spare key or way home, so we paid $156 over the phone for a lockout service. When the employee arrived, he used an air wedge and long-reach tool to try to unlock the car. He was having difficulty getting it open and was pulling hard on the inside driver's door handle with the tool. While doing this, the soft rubber protector on the end of the tool flew off onto my driver's seat, and the exposed tool slapped back with heavy force into the upper driver's-side area of my windshield. We then noticed a large crack coming from the same area where the tool had hit. I immediately pointed it out to my boyfriend while the employee was still there. My windshield was completely intact before this service. I also have multiple timestamped photos, including pictures from about a week beforehand, clearly showing the windshield undamaged. We called Route 66 within about 30 to 45 minutes afterward and explained what happened. The owner immediately argued that it wasn't possible for the windshield to have been damaged that way. After speaking with her employee, she called us back and said he denied damaging it. She agreed to meet us at their shop the following morning. She was late, and when she arrived, the interaction became extremely unprofessional. She raised her voice, repeatedly talked over us, accused us of potentially lying, and kept insisting there was nothing we could prove because we didn't have a video showing the exact second the windshield cracked. My boyfriend repeatedly tried to explain that we understand accidents happen and that we weren't trying to get anything for free. We were perfectly willing to pay the $156 because they did unlock the car. We simply wanted the windshield returned to the condition it was in before their service. Her only proposed "compromise" was refunding the $156 lockout fee instead of addressing the windshield. During the conversation, she told us we must be mentally incapable of understanding her and even told my boyfriend that if one of her guys were there, they would beat him up. We eventually stopped arguing and asked for their insurance information so the insurance company could investigate. She initially wouldn't provide it and repeatedly told us our claim would be denied. She eventually gave us the name of an insurance agency and agent rather than the actual insurer. We later obtained the correct insurance information ourselves, and a claim is now open. As we were leaving, she even made an irrelevant comment about us "probably being liberals." The entire interaction was bizarre and incredibly unprofessional. Accidents happen. My biggest issue is how this was handled afterward. My windshield was intact beforehand, we noticed the damage during their service, and we simply wanted them to professionally address it and allow their insurance company to investigate. Instead, we were accused of lying, insulted, threatened, and had to push just to obtain insurance information. I have timestamped before-and-after photos and will be providing everything to their insurance company. Based on my experience, I would not use Route 66 Towing again and would not recommend them.

I was warned about going to him but took my chances. Boy, did I make a huge mistake!! He'll ruin your vehicle or say he fixed something that didn't even need fixing & charge you a huge amount. Can't believe he's still in business with all the bad things I've heard & experienced first hand. You're foolish if you go to him for ANYTHING!! I wouldn't trust him to fix a flat tire!

I parked my car just outside your shop. I was not certain that your Gardner Illinois shop worked on cars. I was parked less than two minutes wondering my next move (my tire now flat) when you, Jeff, came outside your shop, walked towards me and said, "I can help you." Even typing those words I can feel all weight lifted from my shoulders. What a gift. Thank you. I said, "How do you know?" and you replied, " You look a bit lost." We chatted, Jeff grabbed a patch kit and he patched that decently sized tire hole. My day was saved. I am grateful for you- the owner- being so observant and breaking from your busy routine to check on a stranger. It has renewed my faith in the kindness of others. Thank you for your instinctually kind self. I bet I could visit 40 different shops and probably never meet the owner, they may not even be in the building. I will share with others about how kind and fair you are, Jeff. I wish you the most wonderful success in your business.

Unfortunately for the Pontiac Community we lost Bernie's Automotive to a fire last year…read more Fortunately for me Vance Miller is still running the towing aspect of Bernie's. I first met Vance when my truck decided to turn itself off and not start. Heller motors said they would tow it in to take a look at it. Vance miller showed up, was able to pick me up, and My Truck/Me to Heller Motors to have it looked at. It started right up for Heller Motors. They worked on it for over two hours but couldn't figure out what the issue was. They didn't find the problem and didn't fix it. They said I would just have to "let them know." I'm thinking, great, this will be a nice surprise for me to look forward to. Well today the big surprise happened. I was about a mile and a half north of Towanda heading back to Pontiac from Bloomington. Finding myself dead on the side of the freeway Vance was the first person that came to mind. I called and without hesitation Vance headed my way to rescue me from the sweatbox that my truck was becoming sitting out in that sun. Vance not only picked me and my truck up to drop off at Sam Lemon Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram in Bloomington but he took me to Enterprise rent a car up the road. They had nothing without reservation so he took me to the airport to check out Hertz, Avis, and National. No reservation, no cars. Vance then drove me back to Pontiac and dropped me off at my motel. You see, I am from out of town and that makes issues like this even harder because I am unfamiliar with the surroundings. Honestly, I wish I would have never met Vance because that would mean that my truck was in Tip-Top running order. However, I am glad that I met Vance because he was someone that not only picked me up and took my truck to where it needed to be but he was a local that I could bounce ideas off of and someone that could provide suggestions. As far as I'm concerned he went above and beyond the duties of a tow truck driver. In the end he didn't feel the need to stick it to me when it came to the bill. I hope that when somebody is in the need of a tow truck driver they go to Yelp to find their answer. Look no farther than Bernie's Towing and cross your fingers that Vance Miller is the person that picks you up.
