First, let me start with Tonya. She was the most enjoyable, fun and attentive waitress. We had so much fun because of her. For the food, we started with the pimento cheese and sausage appetizer. Without a doubt, handmade with love!! My brother had the chicken and sausage gumbo, he practically licked the bowl clean! My nephew had the fried chicken with mashed potatoes and green beans. "So amazing"!! My wife had the gulf fresh shrimp and sautéed spinach. Again, amazing!! I had the most eclectic dish ever. It was shrimp stuffed tomato, lime salad, watermelon and olive sandwiches. Definitely never coming back here. Never even got my food. Deserves 0 stars. We sat there for over 1 hour waiting on our food. We watched not 1, not 2, but 4-5 people come in, sit down, order, and get their food before us. Our waitress kept telling us that it was coming out in a few minutes. The comment that made us finally leave was "Your food is the next to come out." She then proceeded to take food out to another table... Also the starter dishes that my friends ordered were absolutely atrocious. They got the mixed fruit and coleslaw salad. I attached a picture to show how portly made it was. (Bottom dish is the mixed fruit plate. It had lettuce on the bottom and very little pieces of fruit. Only good thing about it was the sugar syrup on the fruit. Top dish is their coleslaw salad... same thing as the fruit plate. Lettuce on the bottom with maybe a spoonful of coleslaw on the top.) The waitress also never came by our tables to see if we needed refills. My friend sat with a nearly empty water for over 25 minutes. After we told the waitress that we were leaving, she and another worker proceeded to go back into the kitchen and yell at the cooks. Tonya our server was charming. We were there on a weekday evening so the place was pretty slow. My husband enjoy his fried chicken, my shrimp and grits were only okay at best. The grits were stogy in my shrimp and grits and the sauce unremarkable. The cake deserts looked spectacular but the carrot cake ordered was dry and tasteless with far too much oversweet frosting. This was a very cute spot, literally a house converted to a Restaurant (so it appears ) They were very accommodating to our large group (20) on a Monday given very short notice. Everyone was so nice, and food came out in no time I was told they're famous for their fried chicken (no lies detected) I had Fried chicken with fried corn and mash potatoes and everything was great, other family members had the Alfredo shrimp pasta, seafood platter, fried oysters .... A very enjoyable experience in a great location, close to Vicksburg's Historic District. From the moment you drive up, you feel the history and charm of the place. We enjoyed the crab cakes, catfish poboy, and shrimp n' grits, although I do wish the portion sizes were a bit bigger. My ambrosia was good, but lacked the pecans I was accustomed to in my Louisiana servings.We were given 3 entree choices and I opted for succulent fried chicken breast; also, two vegetables sides offered & I chose well seasoned mustard greens, flavorful green beans and the best small corn bread muffins east of the MS River. On a cross country trek we stopped to have dinner at Walnut Hills. The atmosphere reminded me a lot of a restaurant in Palestine Texas called Judge Barton's. This historic house is worth just stopping by to see and the dinner was excellent. My husband had the fried chicken salad and I the crab cake salad, while brother-in-law had the famous fried chicken. All were excellent. We were very thankful they were able to accommodate our therapy dog who travels with us. Dinner was delicious but by all means save room for dessert. read more

What a find! Thanks Yelp! We are on a road reip and wanted a really good, late lunch. We found Walnut Hill on Yelp and headed straight there about 2pm. We walked in from the back parking area. First thing in the door was an amazing dessert case with all of these yummy cakes and pies. Note to self... Need to order dessert here. Tanya, our server, greeted us at our table. Very cheerful and patient with our questions about the menu. We ordered a couple of locals beers. They have a full bar too. Very good! My wife and I both had the fried chicken lunch and 2 sides each. Good food and great service. The fried chicken was on point. Crispy, hot and juicy the standard order had a breast thigh and leg. For the sides I opted for the broccoli and the spinach . Both were fresh and flavorful. Spinach did however need a little salt. My wife had the fried shrimp which were large fresh and crispy. She had the mash potatoes and slaw. Both were flavorful and fresh. Slaw was a tad sweet for my taste. But was good anyway. Our tea glasses never went empty and our waiter was very accommodating. The food did not take an inordinate amount of time to arrive. You can figure about 20-25 per plate for most items other than sandwiches. Best Southern Food. I have lived in the south for 52 years. We were passing through Vicksburg headed to New Orleans and decided to check out this historical restaurant. Best plate of southern food I have EVER had. Must haves: sweet tea, mashed potatoes and gravy, greens and dessert. Everything we had was delicious but those were definitely stand outs. The people are amazing. We have a daughter with Down syndrome and ASD and they were patient and so kind with her. Adding to our list of places to tell everyone about. The chicken I ordered wasn't bad, but it was missing some kick and moisture so I dowsed it in the pickling sauce on the table (pickled beans) the tiny buns were yummy, but the mini muffins were a bit salty for me. I really liked the green beans but the slaw was soupy. My mom felt the same way about her chicken, but devoured her fried corn and greens, saying that her sides stole the show. I am so impressed with this place. We were on a very large group trip to see the Battle of Vicksburg and this place was able to serve us perfectly without any issues. We made two separate reservations for two groups of 15 people at the same time and the same day and the staff did a fantastic job making sure our drinks and plates were filled. I'm not sure what meal option we selected since I was just along for the ride and not the planner but we had family meal style servings with fried chicken, pork chops and all the fixings! The fried chicken was a dream! They also had a large selection of cakes and pies that all looked fantastic. I got a slice of carrot cake to go and it was soooooo good. Well, here we are again in the lovely city of Vicksburg. A peaceful steady rain was falling and it was around sixty degrees so we decided to walk under the umbrella the five blocks from our B&B to Walnut Hill to give it a second visit. We were richly rewarded for the effort. Had the Corn and Crab chowder for starters. Amazing. If it's on the menu, get it. Especially if you just walked five miles barefoot through the snow like us to get here. It is superb. As we had already gained about thirty pounds in our week on the Gulf coast we decided another four or five pounds would not be an issue before we go on the Sonoma diet on Monday for the rest of our lives until our next vacation, so one of us got the fried oysters and the other the fried shrimp. Cooked to perfection. Onion rigs are great as are the cheese grits and black eyed peas. You just cannot go wrong here. Their fry cook deserves a Pulitzer Prize or something. read more
