We have purchased from Walter E Smithe before. Every visit has been a positive experience. Our current living room set is more than 20 years old and still looks great. But it was time for an update. We requested a free in-home design consultation and Ashley Baron called to arrange our meeting. She arrived at our home and spent plenty of time speaking to us, taking photos and detailed measurements. Once she had a feel for our likes and dislikes, she left and set up a time to come to the Naperville store to review her ideas. She used some very cool VR tools to show on a big TV a virtual picture of our room. She added her initial ideas for the new items for us to view. Then she offered many alternative choices for us to view. We then went to the showroom and sat in several examples to see what was most comfortable for us. Ashley showed us several fabric samples, first her recommendations, then let us view all to see if we liked something different. We found for the most part we loved what Ashley had chosen. Ashley has a great eye for style and really understood what we were looking for in our update. She then added those fabrics to our virtual living room to show us exactly what it would look like. At no time did we feel any pressure or pointing us to or away from anything. It was an excellent experience. Ashley told us we were free to do this update in stages if we liked or add whatever we chose. And as I stated earlier, all this expertise was supplied at no charge. The quality of Walter E Smithe furniture is excellent. It has stood the test of time in our house with four growing sons and now four grandkids playing and wrestling over the years. It still looks great with no wear showing. WES is not cheap furniture. But in my opinion, you cannot beat the value. I'd much rather have excellent quality over some other "throwaway" furniture I've seen. We cannot thank Ashley Baron enough for all her help in choosing the items for our home. After dropping 6k on a sofa from Pottery Barn, I decided to stop in and see if Walter E. Smithe had a red chair or sofa I could get to go with it. Don't bother to waste your time unless you're in your 60s or up. Walked in today and was ignored by ALL of the employees. Lol not even a "hello". One of the employees had no mask on and two more were online shopping for clothing and all of the others just walked around or sat at a computer. I would have snapped a pic of the no mask lady but I thought that would be a bit much but I did get the two chicks ignoring people and online shopping. Lol. What a mess. Classless place. Our design consultant Taylor Cherveny was incredibly helpful. We would not have been able to furnish our home as beautifully or as efficiently as we did without Taylor's help. She is extremely professional and came with several great options for our living room and dining room furniture. Furthermore, she listened to all of our feedback and implemented it in a timely manner. Taylor really got a sense of what my wife and I wanted and delivered expertly. I submitted a request for an appointment to meet with a designer on a Sunday evening and received email confirmation the following day. I arrived to the showroom on time and was told Maureen (Designer and General Mgr) was not in the showroom. I advised that I had an appointment with her to which they responded she was "stuck in traffic," but I could wait. No offer to help - no offer to contact Maureen. I waited in the showroom for 15 minutes - with no contact from anyone and no show of Maureen. There are any number of ways that this could have been handled - she had my contact information, if she was held up, she could have contacted me to reschedule; she could have notified her staff to get me started until she arrived; or, I don't know- she could have kept the commitment. Do you think I received a follow-up call to apologize? Extremely disappointed that the business encourages customers to schedule time to meet with their staff, but the staff (management) has no respect for the customer's time. Quality products - but Customer Service, not so much! read more

I had the best experience working with a Chuck on purchasing a couch. He was very knowledgeable and transparent. I emailed him the dimensions of my living room & he sent me a proposed invoice right away. They also are taking temperatures when entering the store, using hand sanitizer and spraying all couches with Lysol after being touched. I will definitely work with Chuck again when I am in the market for new furniture. read more

This business did not take responsibility for fabric on our couch that started disintegrating with in 2 years . It was a Bernhardt couch. We bought thousands of dollars worth of furniture from them and they offered no recourse for the bad fabric. Neither did Bernhardt. So so disappointed with the quality and the customer service. Our old furniture from 20 years ago which was not a brand name did better than what we paid so much for. Wish they stood behind their product. After waiting 8 months for a furniture piece, a large base & hutch, the base has a hole in the bottom. 3 weeks of back & forth with customer service and I am told that the quality managers determined that's a natural occurrence in the wood. We purchased furniture for three rooms. The designer coordinated everything with us. Lamps wine cart and a curio that had the color scheme ( rose, gold and sage) incorporated into the design. This service is free which is a savings in itself. Delivery was on time, NOTHING was damaged and the designer was right on with our choices. The kicker is: This was 13 years ago and my furniture is still as gorgeous as the day it was purchased. I go to Walter E. Smithe in January and get great sales on accessories such as lamps, throws, greenery and clocks. Our sofa, chairs, dining room and family room furniture is timeless. The only reason I can't give 5 stars is because the manner my entertainment center was delivered. I researched online to find the perfect sized entertainment center to fit into my alcove in my family room. I found my Riverside Furniture Calais model was the best match for the size I needed. I called around to their distributors and to much to my surprise Walter E. Smithe had the best price! My salesperson, Erin helped me order and advised me that there was an additional $100 coupon in the Sunday paper! What a doll to tell me that! Who does that anymore? I also got a great promotion when I paid cash! The delivery was a different story, the guys decided to start connecting the tv, cable box, dvd, etc and totally screwed it up! I had to get Comcast back the next day to fix the HDTV set-up. Also they didn't push it back into the alcove so we had to figure out how to push a 600 ib. unit back into place. That was very annoying as well! I called Erin back and she advised me that they were not suppose to do any connecting and was deeply sorry. I would recommend as their prices are better, as I have checked several competitors. read more

We needed furniture and lots of it, but we did not want press board pieces of absolute crap that would fall apart in 2 yrs and cause us to cry and hit our heads against a wall screaming "why???????". I also did not want to go to a place like Ashley and be waited on by an ex-con with a vague notion of service and questionable hygiene. Therefore, we went to Smithe and met with a well qualified designer who helped us pick out, design, and create a total effect for our house. It was not cheap, our kids must now go to community college, but our house has a certain flow and I feel like I never want to leave home. Megan helped us to find pieces we felt we needed and worked with us to pick out fabrics, patterns, and special touches. The furniture is beautiful, and because of it, I am off my meds. Here I am 11 months later. The rug sheds. Every time I vacuum without a roller brush fuzz fills up my vacuum. There are pulled threads i have to cut off. Walter E Smith did not give me a good alternative to the original rug and I paid more. read more

We needed a new kitchen table, and decided we wanted to go high quality. We went to several stores and steeled on Smithe. Settled is an unfair word because the store was fantastic. Our designer m, Kristen, worked closely with us, helped us pick the final design, and even came to our house to help us pick the colors based off our cabinets and flooring. As long we were here, this Smithe store, and Kristen, are going to be our first stop when we need furniture. read more

The furniture is fairly good, but the store experience is not excellent. The place is so crowded - so much merchandise packet into every corner, it's hard to appreciate the styles. The sales people are good, but it's hard to find them. They do have many fabrics and sofa/chair styles, in order to have a semi-custom creation. read more

When I moved back to the area I was exploring furniture stores to get an idea of the products and services. A girlfriend recommended Walter E Smithe. I stopped in looking for bedroom furniture and ended up falling in love with a sectional. I worked with Sia who was fantastic in heping me pick out materials for the sectional and the pillows. The sectional materials and construction is of very high quality materials and fabric. Sia also suggested a great wall color, Chestertown Buff for my family room to go with the fabrics. We had just bought a house and was planning on painting the rooms. The customer service was fantastic. I received e-mail updates every 10-15 days letting me know what the current eta was as well as a phone call to schedule the delivery. The two men who delivered the sectional were just as professional. They carefully moved the furniture in, put on felt pads positioned the sectional pieces. Showed me how to attach and detach and then put the pillows in place. I was pleased with the experience from start to finish. After purchasing the sectional, Sia made a trip to our new house to help suggest paint colors for each of my rooms. I was done living with white walls and love every single rich color she helped me select. When you go into a store like this you are not buying off a warehouse shelf, expect to spend some time picking out the fabrics and other customizable features and then waiting for awhile for the delivery. I was VERY unimpressed with the customer service we experienced when entering the store. My husband and I walked around the store for quite a while without even being greeted as we walked by the multiple associates standing around talking to one another about personal stories. There was also another associate who sat playing with his cell phone while we were within his earshot trying to figure out the answers to our own questions about the furniture. However, when other customers walked through the door, they were instantly greeted and helped by associates who sat at their stations that my husband and I were within view of too. I am very comfortable being outspoken about our needs as buyers but was completely taken aback by the absolute lack of customer service. I could not believe even after walking the entire store twice that my husband nor I had been offered any assistance whatsoever. I can't help but feel that maybe my husband and I were judged by the sales associates based on everything I witnessed during our browsing experience. Perhaps they just assumed my husband and I did not have money since we do not flaunt it? I finally loudly stated to my husband, "I guess we will just have to take our cash somewhere else. They do not even have a large collection here anyways." We were finally acknowledged. The sales associate was nice enough and helpful. She answered all of our questions and gave prompt followup via phone and e-mail to the questions she could not answer right away. The furniture seemed worthwhile and affordable. We are not sure yet if we want to give the company our cash based on our first experience with their customer service. We will be checking equivalent competitors to see how they compare based on this. Hopefully, we will not experience this at all "higher-end" furniture companies. read more

We received our delivery on time, actually I cannot remember in years ever receiving a delivery the first in the 4 hour window. The delivery team went smooth getting all the pieces in the house and set up. I did receive a follow up letter from the President of Walter E. Smithe. First of all - whoever wrote a negative review of this store is crazy! Furniture is not always available because of manufacturer - in most cases... ANYWAY - I had the best experience with the Naperville and Oakbrook, Illinois stores! John Edmonds, Maggie Beers and Shari have provided some of the best customer service experiences I can recall - I'm in a service related business and have high expectations....John can throw large rugs with a single hand and make a room just fall into place (literally!!), Maggie makes sure of when all furniture comes into warehouse and e-mails you along the way - I've always received responses to phone calls and e-mails within minutes... Furniture delivery people - I think the main person was Armando - WOW they are the best! My experience was beyond expectations and I still have more items to pick out but this was a LARGE order and we were most satisfied - I think if I needed John to he would fold my towels and do my laundry too! Really, I can't say enough about the quality of the furniture and the fact that no one led us into anything - we chose our own furniture and John just steered us if we got off course --- We would recommend Walter E. This was our first experience with Walter E. Smithe and it was great! Ann Schref was just a delight to work with, extremely helpful and we appreciated her professional design advice. We saved a phenomenal amount of money with the Lazy-Boy recliners we ordered with the cash discount and coupon and they came much faster than we anticipated. The customer service was terrific, had phone calls letting us know the approximate delivery time. and even a followup phone call after the delivery asking how everything was. Very rare these days to have that attention to detail with customer service. The delivery drivers were wonderful, polite and on time. We will definitely go back to Walter E. Our living room furniture was delivered in Oct. '07. The sofa I purchased was beautiful to look at but as soon as I sat on it, I knew I had made the wrong choice. I did test it out at the store but I didn't realize we would be using the room as much as we do. I thought we would possibly get "used to it" but it only aggravated me more each time I sat on it. After about 9 months, I decided to just go to the store and see if I could find something on sale and just buy another sofa. Fortunately, a very observant sales person noticed my uneasiness about the whole situation and decided to get the general manager, Maureen Buckley-Rogers, to help me. Immediately, Maureen said that we could work something out, "we want you to be happy with your purchases!" Maureen spent as much time as she could to help me make a better choice, including coming to my home to make sure the scale was right and the new fabric would work. I am thrilled with my new sofa....it is very comfortable and actually, looks better than the original! read more

We wanted new furniture and I didn't want to spend a couple thousand dollars for furniture we were going to have to replace in a few years. I went into Smithe furniture with an idea of what I was looking for. John Edmunds was my sales representative. I can't say enough good things about him. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was infinitely patient when dealing with me. I am not always the easiest person to deal with. I think everything should match color for color. He really worked hard to get me to step out of what I thought I wanted and embrace a bit of change. He is all about the pattern and mixed textures. In the end we managed to meet in the middle. I am glad that I did so. Now my house is somewhat matchy but it also has a bit more personality as well. We ordered some side tables and one of them had an issue with the trim popping off. Someone came and looked at it and decided that they would replace it instead of trying to patch it. The other issue that we had was in delivery in a reorder piece of furniture. Maggie Beers was the person that followed the order and kept me posted. In the end it took more than 6 months for the piece to come in. She never made me feel like, I got her money she can wait as some places do. . She emailed me regularly to keep me in the loop. Whatever issues I have had were so much easier to deal with considering the level of customer service I received. So in the end does the furniture justify the price, so far I would say yes and the service cannot be beat. read more

After searching for the "perfect sofa" in literally every furniture showroom in the Chicagoland area, I walked into the Smithe showroom in Naperville and met designer, Mary Jo Canfield. We talked for about 20 minutes, discussing my ideas and expectations for a family room sofa then walked around the showroom and tried several out. It didn't take Mary Jo long at all to find a sofa that met my expectations for style, comfort and price!!! Before ordering, we made an appt. for her to visit our home to measure and get an idea of my decorating style. After taking into account the decor of the rest of our home, Mary Jo had wonderful ideas for our family room (and a couple for the living and dining rooms!).She found two chairs and a pair of lamps that will complete the look of of our family room makeover! Most of the order has been delivered and we LOVE it!!!! Also, Maggie in the customer service dept. was great with updating me on the status of the order. read more
