Jennifer from Walt's Hitching Post call me this morning regarding my recent review of the restaurant. She was apologetic and very sorry that our meal wasn't the quality that we had expected. I told her that we knew the original owner Bill, the hostess Mary and the beloved server Delores and we were just so disappointed with the meal we received. We went here for a double date on 11/29/2025. All of us, it was our first time going to Walt's Hitching Post. Love the place, vintage, classy. Though it was pretty loud overall because the tables were too close to each other, kinda cramped in my opinion but it was not a big deal for us. Amazing food! We had salmon, surf and turf, ribeye and bison steak for our entree and everything was delicious and cooked to perfection! Fries were exceptional and asparagus needs some seasoning like salt or something but not a big deal. We had the bites something appetizer it was delicious! (Forgot the full name of food sorry) We had cream brûlée for dessert it was super good! Price was very very reasonable! We bought 2 cigars and bar was pretty packed pretty busy we had to reach out to a hostess to help us. Bartender took a while to get us the cigars but not a big deal. Service was excellent. Server and busser all great. Bread was really good! (But too salty in my opinion but not a big deal) Will definitely come back!!! read more

Walt's was such a fun surprise. We went for Valentine's Day and they had a limited menu. Everything we had was delicious. I loved my filet and the apps we got were great as well. Our server was very nice and helpful. The vibe is very interesting, with patrons looking super dressed up and fancy to others dressed way more casual. We didn't get a chance to try the pies (we were too full), but we have heard they are great! read more

Went to Walt's Hitching Post for our 20 year anniversary. We ordered the Tracy Jones Bone in Ribeye light medium with chimichurri. Twice baked potato. For an appetizer we had chicken livers and fried green tomatoes. The service was excellent as it always is. If you don't know about Walt's rye bread you are totally missing out. It's the best. Nothing like it. On our salad we had Walt's Tomato Garlic dressing. Once again it's the best. Walt's is the to go to place for a nice dinner. read more

Walt's was yummy and I'd definitely come back! Spaced properly so it wasn't too tight in there. Food was priced right in my opinion for what we got. All entrees came with a salad, rye bread, and a type of potatoes (fries, mashed, or upgrade to baked). The rye bread was soft and buttery, not hard, the Caesar was pretty good, fries great, and our steaks were nice. The flavor on mine wasn't my favorite. I got the two 4oz filets with crispy onions on top of potato cakes. Flavor of steak was interesting, and I should've gotten them medium rare because they were a little overdone in my opinion. However, all else was good. Server did forget our steaks topper at first but no worries, got it for us right away. Ambience was country and cool. I'd come back to try a burger! read more

I know this is a steakhouse but you can't underestimate the power of great soup in the winter! I had a bite of a filet which was fantastic but my bliss came in the form of delicious and perfectly made French onion soup paired with an even better wine. I loved the history and the building which is why we picked Walt's. The ambiance and service was excellent. The food was okay. We started with the crabcake which I HIGHLY recommend! Next was the onion soup which was disappointing, very bland and was kind of like dishwater. The bone-in Ribeye was excellent and cooked to perfection! The Mac and Cheese was also very bland and not worth the money. I got the carrot cake for dessert which was lackluster. Overall the restaurant and service was great with okay food. read more

Stopped by here for after dinner drinks this past weekend and it was great! Ambiance was relaxing with live music in the background but we could still talk, bartenders were personable and made sure we had everything we needed, Drinks were delicious and fairly priced. Will be planning dinner here soon! read more

The bread is freaking amazing. The rest of the menu goes uphill from there.. Second visit to Walt's and it was just as good as my first go around. Can't go wrong with any steak here. Everything was really delicious. Only negative is that this place is always crowded and kinda loud. read more

Man, hate to write this. I've tried this so many times and just hasn't been good compared to the price point. Better than Outback but not almost ruby prices. Place is typically busy, I guess for the rye bread. Which is delicious!! Service was ok, nice waiter, back up guy didn't do much. They were busy this last time so I give extra points for that. Crab cake was super fishy. Cauliflower wings, on point. May be my favorite dish of night Steak over cooked but flavor pretty good. Green beans as well yum. Only east coast oysters that night so didn't try. I'll go back if my family wants to but wouldn't do it on my own. read more

I visited with great anticipation, haven't treated myself for quite some time. The ambiance was amazing, felt like a nice supper club up in Wisconsin. The Manhattan was fabulous, as was the bartender. Ordered escargot, it was good, not the best I've had, but no complaints (loved the artichoke hearts in with the snails) Got a 10oz filet, with bernaise. My fatal error... I ordered it medium instead of my usual medium rare, wasn't feeling bloody. Well it was past medium (I didn't complain) , but still delicious. The rye bread was fabulous! Fuck this place. If i could rate this 0 stars I would. My friend took me here on my birthday in July. I have shellfish and nut allergies, and I made sure to tell my server immediately. We ordered Parmesan fries for an app. I told the server I don't need a side with my steak, we already have a lot of fries from earlier, and yet I was given a side of regular fries anyways. I ate 2 fries before the server ran back over and let me know at the LAST MINUTE that the regular fries were cooked in the same oil as the shellfish, but the parm fries were not. This could have been a catastrophic end to my birthday, thankfully it wasn't no thanks to the restaurant. No manager came to check on me, it almost seemed as though they were throwing our server under the bus as it was his SECOND day by himself. I asked if I could get a free dessert or something removed since, you know, I could have died on my birthday, and they didn't even do that. All we got was a very apologetic server. I told my mother and she called the restaurant immediately angrily. They lied and said they looked at the footage and I didn't eat any of the fries. Bullshit. Even if I only ate 1 fry that could have been enough to send me into anaphylactic shock. They then tried to offer me a measley gift card FOR MY LIFE. ALL MY LIFE IS WORTH A GIFT CARD, THAT THEY DIDN'T EVEN SEND. We've reported them to the BBB. My friend isn't allowed to pick where we eat anymore. I took myself out to a much nicer restaurant (that I will not name) the week after my birthday and was treated to a heavily discounted meal, free personalized birthday dessert, spoke with the manager, and other pleasantries that I should have gotten at Walt's on the day of my damn birthday. read more

This is my dad's favorite restaurant so I was glad I finally got to try it. Had originally read no kids allowed but that policy has changed so we were able to bring the kids. Made reservations and our party of 6 was seated in a closed off room which was perfect with our 2 year old. The complimentary brown bread is hot and tasty, on the saltier side. Then my wife and I split the ribs + filet combo. We both got salads with ranch - delicious, and chose mashed potatoes. These were perfectly creamy. As for the mains, we ordered the filet medium and wish we had ordered medium rare. Their medium seems to lean more well done than rare so take note. The steak still had very good flavor though and I actually liked it better than the ribs. Good bbq sauce but I prefer fall off the bone. All in all it's a great establishment and I loved the inside decor as you feel like you're back in the 1950s or 60s. Service was outstanding, prompt, and friendly. My wife and I went to Walt's for the first time in many years. I ordered the bone in ribeye medium rare and my wife had the ribs. The ribeye was amazing, cooked perfectly. My wife said the ribs were very good. Salted rye bread served with dinner was fantastic also. As good as the food was the service was just as good. Two servers per table, not hovering, but never missing a beat. Don't bother going to a chain restaurant for a steak or ribs, spend a little extra and get a great meal and service. read more

It is always hustling and bustling with folks, so if you're looking for a really quiet dining experience, this isn't it. ;) However, the steak, cornbread, and potatoes are super tasty, so give it a try! Plus, they make a wonderful key lime pie (more fluffy, less dense than a typical one). My all time fave is the peanut butter pie! The sweet potato soufflé is lacking in flavor, and the green beans aren't a pick of mine. I feel some brown sugar and pecans or marshmallows would be perfect. And the green beans are just way too soft for my palate. Filet is always perfect, as is the strip steak. And the garlic butter topping is a delicious choice!!! So, my friend told me we were going to Walt's Hitching Post for dinner and not to dress up. I figured we were heading into a dive. Was I surprised. It's more of a dinner club than a dive. It reminds me of Keeneland Race track, with stone walls and lots of wood. And horse photos everywhere. And there is live music every night of the week! Why didn't I know about this before? Food is good. Think ribs and steaks kinda place. Manly food. And a well stocked bar. All the Kentucky bourbons. Color me happy. I had a crab cake and it wasn't full of filler! In Kentucky no less. Boyfriend had ribs, cause he eats more than I do. Naturally. Prices were reasonable...at least I think they were. If my memory is correct...I wasn't paying. We came here for a birthday celebration and the food did not disappoint. Walt's has such a unique atmosphere for a dining experience, it is great! Our server was so knowledgeable about the menu and gave us great recommendations- we actually ordered the special they had of the bison filet and 2 scallops/ and they pre-split it for us on two separate dishes since we were sharing. Everything we got was amazing! From the drinks to the crab cake appetizer to the entrees. Would love to come back and get something new! read more

We recently had our second visit to Walt's, which I am confident is going to be our last. On the first visit we both ordered signature steaks, along with the foie gras appetizer. The steaks were decent but by no means exceptional. The foie gras was uncooked, which some folks like but not us -- we much prefer seared (oh how we miss Jean Robert's Table!) but that wasn't evident on the menu. In fairness we should have asked before we ordered instead of assuming. In any event, when the dust settled we walked away decidedly unimpressed with the experience and about $200 lighter in the wallet after beverages, tax and tip. Nevertheless, we decided to give Walt's another try, in hopes that our initial lackluster impression was just a one-off occurrence. During our second visit I decided to try the $40 wagyu burger. I thought "surely if they're charging $40 for a burger it must be pretty good." What a massive disappointment! The first thing that jumped out at me was the "caramelized" onions that were so stringy I couldn't bite through them without focused effort. More importantly, the patty itself was rubbery and the seasoning was simply ... off. Note to the chef -- never put the seasonings directly into the beef because the salt, combined with overworking of the meat, produced that unpleasant texture. I consistently make dramatically better burgers at home because I have good technique and seasonings that actually taste good. The end result was that I simply couldn't finish this one -- I left half of the burger on my plate and politely declined a carryout box. On the upside, the atmosphere is great, the energy of the place is fun, and the staff are top notch. Their signature salted rye bread is excellent, and the fries alongside the burger were yummy. However, when the sides are the stars of the show, you're doing something wrong. Unfortunately, my experience with Walt's only served to reinforce my common assessment of most restaurants as overpriced exercises in disappointment. Walt's is certainly that. read more

Walt's has always been a "go-to" for us! Our server was fabulous! We had a small room which was nice with the high chair and 12 month old. The room was freezing! The appetizers were excellent! We had burnt ends and deep fried ribs! Great recommendation by our server. Our main meal was disappointing to say the least!! The salmon was served less than warm, my potatoes were cold! My hubs and son's steaks were less than optimal. Our daughter n law said her steak was ok! Our son's elk was delicious! The desserts were adequate! Unfortunately, this was a disappointing family dinner. Our last meal here was about the same. read more

Pulling into Walt's, they have valet parking in the front and a big parking lot in the back to self park. Looks like they also have a smoke house outback. It was our anniversary, and it was the first time that we went to Walt's. The service was very good. Our waitress was nice and attentive, and that there was someone who took care of getting us water when needed. We ordered drinks while we perused the menu. He had an amber beer and I ordered the Eastwood Old Fashioned. I followed up the old fashioned with a second drink that was more fruity, the Fort Wright Filly. Both of my cocktails were good. We ordered a couple of appetizers, I ordered the colossal shrimp cocktail and he ordered the smoked jumbo chicken wings. Both of our appetizers were delicious and the chicken wings were indeed jumbo. When they brought out the appetizers, they also brought out a salted dark rye bread. I could have ate my weight in this bread it was so good! For the main course he ordered the BT's signature strip. It was a 16 ounce New York strip without the bone. He said it was good and perfectly cooked. He ordered it medium rare. I decided to go for the petite surf and turf which was 2 cold water lobster tails served with two 4oz filets. Both dishes were a lot of food to eat and both of them excellent with both of my steaks being perfect medium rare as well. I ordered a crème brûlée, and this was the only place that they really faltered as I would not order that again. The top was burnt and if I can say, crème brûlée is too eggy, then it was. We did get a to-go bag for our meal that was left and it was a nice reusable bag with their name on it. We would go back here again! read more

This was our first time visiting Walt's for my wife and I for a birthday dinner as many of our co-workers have highly recommended it. I went on the website to schedule a reservation and discovered we had to call to place one. Maybe I am missing something but most establishments have on-line reservations so I thought that was old school having to call. The first time I called no one came to the phone so I called back later in the day and set one for Saturday night at 4:30. We arrived on time and were seated quickly. We ordered drinks and were ready to relax and enjoy a nice meal. The server and busser were efficient and friendly but the issue I had was we felt rushed as the server came back every 5 minutes to see if we were ready to order. The place was empty when we arrived and we wanted to enjoy the evening but felt rushed so we ordered our meal. The rye bread came out and was delicious and lived up to the hype we had heard from others. My wife ordered the 6 oz fillet and I ordered the Affirmed. The meal came out fairly quickly and my wife loved hers as it was very well prepared and hot. Mine not so much. While the presentation was nice and it looked delicious the fillet was lukewarm and definitely a different quality than my wife's piece. I kindly asked the server to heat it back up. By the time I had mine brought back to the table my wife was almost finished with hers which kind of ruined the entire experience. Mine was still not hot and fresh so I only ate one of the 4 ounce pieces and took the rest home. Needless to say I was very disappointed and did not have a favorable impression. The server was apologetic and wanted everything to be right but at that point I wasn't going to make a big deal out of it as my wife was already uncomfortable with the whole situation. What surprised me even more is the server didn't offer to comp anything even though she could tell I was not satisfied with my meal. I will also add my loaded back potato was lukewarm as well so not sure if it was from the day before and reheated or just wasn't prepared properly. We did have a manager stop by later in our meal and asked if everything was going well with our meal and service. Of course I said everything was good. It is very awkward in front of your wife to tell the manager your experience was sub par and not up to my expectations when she was bringing me here for my birthday. The dining room was crowded so obviously Walt's is a popular destination. Perhaps we caught them on an off night but for $170 for 2 people I would expect more. The other thing I found interesting is we were charged $2 for extra dressing. I have been to other restaurants that do this and I was fine paying extra as I enjoy extra dressing on my salad but it kind of piled on to my less than favorable experience when my wife mentioned that was added on to the bill. In closing, I will say Walt's staff tries very hard with their service and are very friendly and have plenty of staff and want to serve you to the best of their ability. Sat at the bar last night which is our favorite place to sit at Walt's. The ambiance is really cool and comforting. We had a black and blue salad which was amazing and their fried chicken. I'm a long time customer and usually go with their ribs or great steaks. The chicken was excellent and might be my new favorite item. Light breading, tender with great flavor. The chicken now makes onto my Walt's rotation. Additionally - want to thank the staff at the bar. Kendra is one of our favorites and the service was spectacular from her and Michelle. While we really like the vibe of the bar, the amazing service we makes the whole experience exceptional. Great food, great ambiance, great service! read more

We always wonder why we don't come here more! About a 30 min drive which isn't bad so I guess crossing state lines makes it feel far away. Nevertheless, their food is amazing! Service is impeccable. Decor is equestrian which seems fitting for KY. I will say... they asked if we were celebrating anything and it happened to be my birthday. Why do they ask?? They do not offer any complimentary dessert etc like many places do. And I noticed another patron going out of her way to "secretly" tell her server about a birthday. And as we were leaving, guests were checking in saying it was their anniversary. Why??? Why mention it if there is no treat involved? . I just find that humorous and assume most people expect a dessert (their normal prices should allow for this bonus ‍) We did buy a dessert to take home and it was delicious. Another incredible dinner at Walt's solidifies this unique KY steakhouse as my favorite restaurant in the Tri-State! My husband and I chose to dine here for Valentine's Day - and we received excellent service and delicious food. Our waitress, Colley (forgive me if it's spelled differently!) was fun and down-to-earth. With her attention to detail, she made us feel like we were her only table (even though we knew she was very busy!) We'd definitely request her for our next visit. Our dinner was absolutely perfect from start to finish. We kicked things off with a 1/2 dozen oysters, some escargot, and the bourbon burnt ends. We'd had the first two appetizers in the past - and they lived up to how much we loved them on our last visit. The bourbon burnt ends were phenomenal - crispy, smokey, and coated with Walt's famous BBQ sauce. What more could you ask for? We decided to order one of their nightly specials - the 10 oz. Bison Steak - along with one of their classics - the Braised, Bone-In Pork. The bison was tasty and tender - but our favorite bite of the night was definitely the pork. Every morsel melted in our mouths, and when paired with their creamy orzo, it was truly show-stopping. For dessert, we ate as much as we could of their Bananas Foster, which is a huge portion, even for two people. Seasoning was beyond perfect.Filet Mignon chilli was my favorite.  Sides and soup amazing. escargot was cooked perfect and tasty. the rye bread is a perfect pairing with everything. Oh what a night!!! You walk into this quaint little restaurant not quite knowing what to expect. Reservations are expected and needed. The bar area is quite nice and the ambiance in the restaurant is truly Kentucky with Derby Cups and Paintings all over the wooden areas all over the restaurant. We sat at a table for 2 by the beautiful, stone fireplace and we were ecstatic about our seats. This is not a place to go to if you need to be out soon, this is an experience!! We had some of the best drinks I've ever had. They have an amazing bourbon menu and I took complete advantage of this. I had the Tournedos as a meal and my husband had the ribs and filet, aptly named the turf and turf. The food is excellent, but the real deal are the drinks, apps and sides!!! This place is quite expensive but worth the wait for reservations and a true experience. We will definitely go again. read more

Great business dinner here on a Monday night! Appreciate the staff giving us a big table and then having us trickle in over the course of 2 hours as all 7 of us arrived in from 7 different cities around the world. Cool live music, really friendly service, good meat - definitely had the meat sweats that night. Oysters Rockefeller, Brussels Sprouts, bourbon burnt ends - would order all of this again! A fun local favorite that's a bit off the beaten path and quite busy this holiday season. Went to listen to one of our favorite local performers play familiar tunes so we could hum along.
