Oh what a night!!! You walk into this quaint little restaurant not quite knowing what to expect. Reservations are expected and needed. The bar area is quite nice and the ambiance in the restaurant is truly Kentucky with Derby Cups and Paintings all over the wooden areas all over the restaurant. We sat at a table for 2 by the beautiful, stone fireplace and we were ecstatic about our seats. This is not a place to go to if you need to be out soon, this is an experience!! We had some of the best drinks I've ever had. They have an amazing bourbon menu and I took complete advantage of this. I had the Tournedos as a meal and my husband had the ribs and filet, aptly named the turf and turf. The food is excellent, but the real deal are the drinks, apps and sides!!! Great business dinner here on a Monday night! Appreciate the staff giving us a big table and then having us trickle in over the course of 2 hours as all 7 of us arrived in from 7 different cities around the world. Cool live music, really friendly service, good meat - definitely had the meat sweats that night. Oysters Rockefeller, Brussels Sprouts, bourbon burnt ends - would order all of this again! They were also super flexible with my order b/c I wanted the filet mignon with Scallops and they were very accommodating. Their Old Fashioned comes standard with Buffalo Trace. read more

This was our first time visiting Walt's for my wife and I for a birthday dinner as many of our co-workers have highly recommended it. I went on the website to schedule a reservation and discovered we had to call to place one. Maybe I am missing something but most establishments have on-line reservations so I thought that was old school having to call. The first time I called no one came to the phone so I called back later in the day and set one for Saturday night at 4:30. We arrived on time and were seated quickly. We ordered drinks and were ready to relax and enjoy a nice meal. The server and busser were efficient and friendly but the issue I had was we felt rushed as the server came back every 5 minutes to see if we were ready to order. The place was empty when we arrived and we wanted to enjoy the evening but felt rushed so we ordered our meal. The rye bread came out and was delicious and lived up to the hype we had heard from others. My wife ordered the 6 oz fillet and I ordered the Affirmed. The meal came out fairly quickly and my wife loved hers as it was very well prepared and hot. Mine not so much. While the presentation was nice and it looked delicious the fillet was lukewarm and definitely a different quality than my wife's piece. I kindly asked the server to heat it back up. By the time I had mine brought back to the table my wife was almost finished with hers which kind of ruined the entire experience. Mine was still not hot and fresh so I only ate one of the 4 ounce pieces and took the rest home. Needless to say I was very disappointed and did not have a favorable impression. The server was apologetic and wanted everything to be right but at that point I wasn't going to make a big deal out of it as my wife was already uncomfortable with the whole situation. What surprised me even more is the server didn't offer to comp anything even though she could tell I was not satisfied with my meal. I will also add my loaded back potato was lukewarm as well so not sure if it was from the day before and reheated or just wasn't prepared properly. We did have a manager stop by later in our meal and asked if everything was going well with our meal and service. Of course I said everything was good. It is very awkward in front of your wife to tell the manager your experience was sub par and not up to my expectations when she was bringing me here for my birthday. The dining room was crowded so obviously Walt's is a popular destination. Perhaps we caught them on an off night but for $170 for 2 people I would expect more. The other thing I found interesting is we were charged $2 for extra dressing. I have been to other restaurants that do this and I was fine paying extra as I enjoy extra dressing on my salad but it kind of piled on to my less than favorable experience when my wife mentioned that was added on to the bill. In closing, I will say Walt's staff tries very hard with their service and are very friendly and have plenty of staff and want to serve you to the best of their ability. Came in on a relatively calm Monday and lucked out and found a spot at the bar. The drinks were quick and perfect and the menu...... oh goodness! After talking it over with the bartender Courtney, I finally decided on the Black and Blue Filets. I have NO idea why she brought out a steak knife because the filets were perfect and completely forkable. The scallops were just right and I couldn't finish that bread even though I wanted to. I couldn't imagine eating desert but after seeing the in-house jerky on display, I had to grab a bag for the road. They did some checking and called me back with a 7pm reservation. Wow. Our group was seated in one of the back rooms. Very quiet and very nice. Our waiters were very attentive and informative. The primary waiter pointed out specials, new items on the menu, etc. very helpful. The food was delicious. OK....the rye bread is special. It's tough not to eat so much of it and ruin your meal. I got the ribeye with scallops special. Melt in your mouth tender. Everyone at the table got a steak...filets, ribeyes, etc. All cooked to perfection. The waitstaff was attentive but not hovering. If you want raw wagyu sliders, this is your place. The sliders we sent back to be re-cooked received were inedible due to the amount of salt that was added. The meals were taken off the bill, but my husband left with a swollen face and salt coated mouth from the worst sliders I have ever eaten in my 40 years of life. This place is a part of my history. I grew up with my parents taking me here. My parents hosted my brother's wedding rehearsal dinner here. But I never "got it". Everyone raves about it. My parents - who complain about EVERY restaurant in existence - don't complain about this place. Meanwhile, I never found any reason to love this place. And so on a recent trip home, my family and I had dinner here and I'm still going.. "WHY?". But I realize that I ordered badly and maybe that's been the thing that has kept me from loving this place for the last... let's say 35 years... I just keep ordering badly. I don't eat much chicken. So that's off the table. I don't eat ribs. So that doesn't happen. So this time, I decided to go with a "steak and lobster fettucine alfredo". HUGE MISTAKE. Do not be like me. HUGE is the operative word. After a really very good salad with a great house dressing and too much of that delicious bread, I was presented with a plate of pasta so heavy I could barely lift it. At least a pound of pasta that was then toopped with an entire steak (in pieces) and 2-3 pieces of lobster. It was a gigantic mess. Again, emphasis on gigantic. It wasn't awful.... it was just OK but way too much of just OK food. My family fared much better. My brother's steak looked good despite his insistence on having it "well done". My sister in laws Steak Diane looked fantastic (and I think in hindsight, the several dishes with smaller filets look like the way to go). My neice's scallops with polenta were beautiful - although she insisted they be delivered "all on the side". A side crab cake was very good. My parents both got chicken and the "famous" slaw. I don't care for either of those dishes but they definitely enjoyed their dish more than I did mine. So I know there IS good food to be had here... I just never seem to order it. But no one can complain about that bread. You'll still feel guilty well in to the next day, but it's damn good. Service here has always been... iffy. The young ladies at the front desk seem confused and not always that nice. We called to move our reservation from 6 pm to 5 pm and generally, getting an EARLIER reservation isn't a problem at most places, but we were flatly denied here. And that was odd because when we arrived at 6, the place was mostly empty (except for the bar). And we had to flag down folks for more water and bread (natch) a few times. But our server was friendly and extremely efficient. Walt's has existed this long for a reason. It's a solid choice that I know is a part of the memory of many Northern KY families. read more

The service here is absolutely amazing! The wait staff is impeccable! The building is dim, older and romantic! I love smelling the old fire pit building in the lot! The steak is fantastic! Anything else we ate was nothing special. The sides were not great. The salad is just lettuce 2 cherry tomatoes and a sliver of red onion, might as well upgrade. The Billy ribs were horrible! The fat and gristle made them hard to stomach. The rib sauce has no flavor, it tasted like sweet watered down ketchup. The house dressing for the "salad" tasted like French dressing. They make and cheese has a good flavor but was crusty and oily, not creamy as I would expect. The onion straws were cold when I asked for a replacement they were burned. I think if I would dine here again it would have to be if I was really craving a steak. read more

I traveled into town on business and had a lovely dinner with some colleagues of mine. Everyone at our table had a wonderful experience. We made a reservation for 5, and we were sat in one of their semi-private rooms, the Cauthen Room. We didn't realize this immediately, but we were very glad for this bc the rest of the restaurant was quite loud outside of this room. I'd recommend asking for this room if you have a party of 8 or less, if the reservation time allows for this. Everyone at the table enjoyed their food. For appetizers we ordered the Bourbon Burnt Ends and Shrimp Cocktail (x2). The burnt ends were tasty but they were bit tough, though that isn't surprising for burnt ends. And the shrimp cocktail was pretty standard, but very good. Everyone enjoyed their entrees. Most ordered the Catch of the Day special which was halibut on this particular day. I ordered the Black and Blue salad (I'm not a big fish fan), and I would not recommend it. This is my only criticism of Walt's, but the steak served with it was tough, and not extremely well seasoned. I also didn't taste a lot of blue cheese crumbles that is supposed to be served with. I'd recommend offering this salad with one of the 4oz or 6oz filets and cooking it to order. Most other restaurants that offer a similar salad do it this way, so this is what I was expecting. The mango habanero margarita that I ordered was a bit too sweet for me, but if you like sweet drinks and can handle a bit of spicy kick, this would be a good drink for you. It is listed on their Signature Cocktails menu. They also have a Manhattan on their menu that another colleague ordered that he was very impressed with, and it is one of his favorite cocktails. Lastly, we got some coffee with dessert. The turtle cheesecake was a big hit. Rich, but a bit lighter than a traditional cheesecake so it wasn't overly filling after the meal we had. I ordered a slice of cheesecake to go and it is HUGE! It's also notable that it is fantastic. Also, the coffee that was served was lovely. It's a hazelnut roast that wasn't overly bitter, so don't be afraid to order coffee here. Service was wonderful, attentive. Overall, well done. The steaks my husband and I ordered were very tough. The flavor was good and they were cooked correctly but we struggled to even cut them much less chew them. My server finally offered to have a fillet made for me instead of the strip steak. It was tender (which it should have been) but my husband decided to gnaw his way through a ribeye. $62 for a tough ribeye is ridiculous. We were treating ourselves but this meal wasn't a treat. If you are looking for a nice dinner in the Northern Kentucky area, look no further. This has to be one of the best restaurant options you can find. I highly recommend getting reservations because they can fill up pretty quick! They do have bar seating if there is just 1-2 people. They have a small parking lot in the back, but also have valet right out front. The Menu is pretty large and there are plenty of options for anything you may have a taste for. They are well known for their Steaks and Chicken. We had a table of 7 of us on a Friday night. The service was fantastic and the food was even better. The Half Chicken is absolutely mouth watering and it comes with a homemade BBQ sauce. They have a full bar to choose from and many classic cocktails. I'm kind of over Rubys. It's hard to get in and their prices have skyrocketed. So I decided to try Walts because I've heard a lot about it. Their Ryebread is absolutely delicious. Their steak prices are good and I was satisfied with the bone-in ribeye I got the first time I was there and the fillet that I got the second time. The atmosphere is pretty quirky. They do have live music in the bar area. I will definitely continue to come back here when I have a hankering for a steak. read more

This is my second review of Walt's. Our previous experience there, which was in the restaurant, was very positive. This one, not so much. Let's get to the negative first. We placed our carryout order at 4:30 PM on Feb. 13. We were told our meals would be ready for pickup at 6:00 PM. Three entrees, three desserts. I had the 14oz bone in ribeye with béarnaise, loaded baked potato, and caesar salad. My wife had the filet, oscar style, with baked potato, and caesar salad. And my daughter ordered a bowl of the lobster bisque. For our desserts, we had one order of bread pudding, one piece of carrot cake, and my daughter wanted a scoop of their bourbon pecan ice cream. At the time we ordered, there was no feedback about them being out of anything, and we left contact information. Everything was going well at this point. My wife arrived at 6:00 to pick up our food - and was informed they were out of the bourbon pecan ice cream. We allowed them to substitute in an order of the bread pudding. My wife left the restaurant at 6:20 and headed home. When we checked our bags of food (which were packaged well), we discovered they completely forgot my daughters soup. They also neglected the béarnaise sauce for my steak. Everything else was correct. As we live about 20 mins from the restaurant, we called them back and spoke to a manager about the soup. She issued us a credit on our bill. We discovered this morning when we were reviewing the receipt that the restaurant charged us an automatic gratuity on our bill of 10% - this would be in addition to the tip my wife left when she picked up the food and paid the bill. Their website does not mention this AT ALL. Nor did the server I spoke to who took my order early in the afternoon. I feel this is a bit deceptive. All told, our bill at the time of pickup was $178.00. So, the food itself was ok. The steaks were cooked perfectly, the salads were good. My only real issue was the baked potatoes were on the smaller side. I think that if we had been eating in the restaurant, we would have gotten larger potatoes. Walt's has a reputation of being a really good steakhouse on this side of the river. And I think the in-restaurant experience is great. But I will never do carryout from them again. Too many little mistakes (and a hidden fee) for my taste when you're spending that kind of money on a nice meal. And yes, I fully acknowledge that we could have checked our bags before we left there and found the soup was missing, and we might have caught the automatic tip had we been paying more attention. But I also expect a restaurant to deliver on what they promise, especially at these prices. I think I would rather try my luck with Blinkers Tavern, or go across the river to Jeff Ruby's for carryout. read more

Hands down, best steak I've had in the NKY area! My wife and I care for our 13yr wedding anniversary expecting to spend a little and enjoy a nice meal. We ordered a 22oz, 45day aged ribeye on the bone. They broil all the sides at the same time at 850degrees to lock in the juices. This gave an amazing outer char ensuring every bite has a a nice crisp to it. It was cooked medium like I asked and tasted fantastic. We also had shrimp, salad, buttered rye bread, and key lime pie for dessert. We really enjoyed our meal as well as the atmosphere of the place. Huge shout out to our waiter Alex, he was absolutely phenomenal! He was super accommodating, very knowledgeable of the food and history of the restaurant, and you can tell he enjoys bringing a smile to the customer's face. Recommend asking for him if you plan to stop by. Overall, I look forward to going back. I really want to try the ribs, I've heard good things. read more

Really unfortunate experience. We have been here before & had a great time - tonight that was not the case. We were one of the first tables seated for the evening (5pm opening, 5pm reservation). There was an issue with the bread they had delivered to the table however the waitress was rude and condescending when explaining a possible situation in the kitchen or with the supply chain. She brought salads with a piece of bread & proceeded to tell our table it would be our only slice for the rest of the night. After speaking with the manager, we were brought a great, fresh batch with no mention of constraints or issues. Very odd and unwelcoming communication from the waitress, but quickly remedied by management. My MIL ordered her steak "very well done". It was delivered medium well. I ordered my steak medium and was given a medium rare. This was also remedied by management. The manager went above and beyond to fix all issues but its unfortunate that a family dinner with visiting relatives had half of the table eating & the other half waiting. Great food (once completed) and great management communication salvaged the experience. read more

Went here for our anniversary for dinner. We had heard such good things about this place and had been meaning to check it out for a while! It had even been compared to Jeff Ruby, but less expensive to us in the past. We were very underwhelmed in general. Our server was pretty much on her own and did all of our refills for us. She had a lot of other tables as well. She did the best she could, but we could tell she was very busy. She was very nice. The food was good overall except my steak was VERY undercooked (I ordered medium rare and it was very much rare). It was disappointing as I had to have them cook it some more and it tasted very weird afterwards due to the sauces I already had on it (bordelaise and bernaise). We had a reservation for 5:15 on a Sunday afternoon. We arrived a bit early and gave our name and went to the bar. Hubby ordered an Old Fashioned. I ordered a Manhattan. Both drinks came promptly. The bar staff were nice and the drinks were good. When our table was ready, the hostess came and got us. Dan was our server. We didn't order an appetizer this time. Hubby ordered elk steak and I ordered salmon. Both entrees came with a house salad. The dressings were house-made and delicious. Hubby tried the tomato garlic dressing. I had a little taste of it and it was a bit sweet for me, but that's my opinion. Elk steak was very tender and I enjoyed the bite I tried. The salmon had a spicy aioli which was divine on the perfectly cooked fish. There was buttered, salted dark rye bread for the table and it was incredible! I cannot confirm or deny that I may have eaten 4 pieces of bread. The menu includes an extensive wine list and cocktail and beer selection. We ordered bread pudding and carrot cake for dessert. They were saying they would pay for the dry cleaning of the dress and be sending a gift card out to us for this situation. They had also asked if we would remove the review or edit it since they reached out. Unfortunately we never received anytime(not that that was the goal of this review) but to say they would do this for us and not, almost makes it seem like they wanted the review down before they took further action. read more

I've been so excited to try Walt's again. I came with my family on Easter and we were seated in the Cauthen room. We didn't even request to be sat there so it was a great surprise. It's brighter and more quiet in there so it was nice for a family dinner. The menu was a little different for Easter, but they still had all their classics. I was a little disappointed that I couldn't get the 6oz filet. They only had the 10oz on the menu, but I had leftovers so it wasn't a big deal. Their filet is amazing. The seasoning on the filet makes for an awesome crust on outside. I suggest that everyone tries their filet. I also tried the crab cake and it was delicious. I'm obsessed with their rye bread. I could eat a whole loaf of it. My parents always get the ribs and chicken and they seem to enjoy it. The service was great and the food was even better.
