Walt's is famous in Marion. I will admit, they have great pizza, and I mean really tasty! The salad bar is nothing impressive. For someone who eats healthy, the large selection of "low-cal / low-fat" salad dressings fail to inspire. The staff is generally rather friendly. Walt's is a place that is hit or miss. Sometimes you get a good pizza and sometimes you don't. The fact that the quality of pizza is varied from visit to visit has made it that I no longer go there, as I don't know which variance I will get. Unlike other pizza places in southern Illinois, the sauce isn't overly sweet. The cheese is nice. I also usually get sausage and it was pretty good. Again, those are on the good days. That being said, I do like the atmosphere. The staff does address your needs. Going back to the pizza, I think they are best eaten at the restaurant itself. I have had take out twice and it doesn't taste the same. If Walt's had more consistency, I would go there more often. We got the double decker pizza and it was very good. The crust was crunchy and had a good flavor. My husband got the salad bar. He said it was pretty decent. The service was great . They told me 45 mins and it took over an hour and a half to deliver a large pepperoni....guess I shouldn't have ordered something so crazy? Home-Town atmosphere kind of a Pizza Place at its finest. Order the double-decker 'Cheesier' specialty pizza and then add your favorite meat, even if that's just pepperoni. You will absolutely fall in love, and you won't be disappointed when you wake up the next morning to find the leftovers are just as good as you thought. The outside area is great, has a flat-screen for us football fans and yes, the volume is up to hear it! With a gas fire pit and an infrared tower, we were happy to enjoy our evening on the patio. Stopped while on a road trip. we were the only outta towners. Large menu and lots of tasty options. Most people around us had pizza, but we had the bruschetta appetizer, spinach salad and flat-iron sirloin. Steak was very well cooked and perfectly seasoned. We stayed overnight in Marion and decided to try Walt's because it had a salad bar. The salad bar was pretty tiny, but the salad was good. The restaurant was dark, noisy, and very warm, but the music was wonderful. The food was just okay. We both ordered pasta dishes and mine (the mushroom ravioli) was overly hot and had hard edges on some of the pasta, so it seems that it may have been microwaved. All in all, it was better than chain Italian, but I'd carry out next time. read more

We did carry out from Walt's during an overnight rest stop on a cross country road trip. Looking at the menu and reviews online, we went with one of the special think crust pizzas ~ the California and then an order of toasted ravioli. Pizza was good, crunchy and perfectly cooked. I've been coming to walts since the 1980s....and went for the first time in a year today (i now live out of state). I dont know what has happened in the last year but the quality of the food has absolutely plummeted. I ordered a walts sub....and what i got was a sandwich that on par with the quality i would get from a plastic packaged one from a gas station....heartbreaking....sad days when a life long love affair come crashing down. My favorite pizza - I love both the double decker and the White Pizza. I come from St Louis to Marion to visit my sister several times a year and we have to eat here every visit. A little expensive, but you get what you pay for. This definitely is not Pizza Hut or Dominos. read more

Ordered here for pickup/carryout. I ordered a salad with no egg and a cheesy beef sandwich. Not only did the salad have egg, it had whole pieces of onion in, not cut up. Then I call them up and let them know I can NOT eat egg, the salad was made wrong. The sandwich was horribly dry like eating beef jerky on burnt toast! Then proceeds to tell me I'll have credit for a free beef sandwich and salad for my next visit. A real 70's throwback--including the music! We got in a little after 1:00 pm and we're delighted to hear that the lunch buffet was still open. All four sections were full and fresh, even though the buffet ended at 2. Loved the crispy pizza (all of them). The pizza & service is great . The waitresses are top notch . We never have to ask for drink refills . They are always on top of everything . However the owner definitely has Napoleon Complex little man syndrome . If it wasn't for his excellent help he would have no business at all . He takes the mask thing to a unique level . So if he is there & you can not wear a mask for a medical reason you will not be allowed in . There are plenty of other good eating places in the area that do not have a mask gestapo . Rude servers, manager couldn't care less. Sanitation is not a priority. Used bare hands to scoop lettuce for a salad, told us that policy dictates they not use gloves. Said she had washed her hands, but we watched her play with her hair prior to making the salad. This was my first visit to Walt's, and I was with my wife and brother. We decided to take him to Walt's to celebrate his 17th birthday since we had participated in the "My Town Half-Price" and had a $20 voucher. We went around 8 or 9pm on a Saturday, so they were pretty busy. The first thing I noticed was the horrible lighting. The second thing I noticed was the group of young female employees huddled around the front podium giggling and gossiping. They seemed very inconvenienced that we came in, and just pointed to a table near them asking "Is this okay?" Which we said it was, but had I known that we'd have to listen to them babble throughout our whole meal, I would have requested a different table. The table was very low to the ground which made the whole experience even more uncomfortable and awkward. I don't think our waitress, Jen, even attempted to smile the entire time we were there. Once we showed her our voucher, she brushed it off and said "Okay?" like we were stupid (the voucher stated that we should present it to our server upon arrival). She brought us our drinks and said "Are you ready to order?" When we told her we needed another minute, she just walked away without saying anything. The rest of the meal was just miserable. Another employee brought us our food, and I asked her if she knew our waitress's name, and when she told me, I said "well, she really sucks." and I explained why. She apologized, and I'm assuming she told Jen what I had said, because she finally came to refill our drinks that had been sitting empty the whole time we were eating and attempted to be (her version) of polite. Once we got finished eating, she was nowhere to be found for about 10 minutes, and when she finally walked by, she didn't even look our way. Instead, she went over to another table and laughed and socialized for a minute until, I guess, she noticed me staring at her. It was the worst service I've had in a very long time...possibly ever. The food was terrible. The seafood nachos are literally a plate of Tostitos with some imitation crab, maybe 5 baby shrimp, and some shredded cheese all in one big luke-warm clump that I had to cut apart to even eat. It costs nearly $9.00! I have one more voucher to use, and if I didn't care to waste money, I'd probably just throw it away. I will be sure to update when I am feeling patient enough to give Walt's another shot. read more

I was expecting much better after all the rave reviews for Walt's. My dining experience started off OK with the tasty fresh veggies at the salad bar, but they didn't have a balsamic or low cal italian dressing. They also were short on salad bowls the entire night. This place was crazy crowded, so many of locals must still feel the food here is good, but my experience was on the contrary. I ordered the fish taco's since I figured they would have an interesting recipe and wanted to see how it would be and some in-season asparagus as the posted special stated. My girlfriend got the ravioli and shrimp which was listed as one of Walt's signature dishes. I'm sad to say all of this food was disappointing. The fish taco's consisted of just a deep-fried bland white fish with some corn and black beans thrown on top - neither of which added any flavor but made it look sort of pretty. No lettuce, very few onions, plain un-grilled tortilla, and no sauce or if there was any it had no flavor. And the waitress forgot the asparagus completely, but I never bothered to ask again since I was already not impressed with the rest of the food. My girlfriend's pasta came out stone cold which is a shame since the flavor was actually quite nice. In order to get a 3 star rating or above from me, the food has to at least be served warm and I expect the dishes to have flavor. read more

We has the double decker deluxe pizza. This pizza was not what I'm accustom to. It was flavorless. The green peppers overpowered the pizza and it truly wasn't loaded with peppers. The sauce was Bland, Even thou it had plenty of sauce. If your passing thru pass on the pizza. The nachos looked amazing. The cheese bread was fine. Not sure what kind of cheese it was thou...... Not understanding all of the great reviews. We were driving through on our way home to Nashville and using Yelp, but we were led astray! We're ordered artichoke dip and the pesto walnut pasta dish. The Italian salad came with the dinner and it was actually very good but very small. The artichoke dip came next. It was tasteless with tons of breadcrumbs... in fact mostly bread crumbs. You could hardly see artichoke so really this was breadcrumbs and alfredo sauce. Soon after, the pasta dish came. It was again, mostly alfredo sauce. There were small amounts of chicken thrown in and some whole walnuts... it didn't seem like the walnuts were cooked in the dish..... just thrown in at the end. So again, this basically tasted like alfredo sauce with a little touch of pesto. Garlic bread came with the pasta...two small hard pieces of tasteless bread. Stopped for dinner on the way from Illinois to Florida. About 1 1/2 miles off I-57 but absolutely worth the time off the road. Food was outstanding and Jackie our server was fantastic - especially with two road tired kids! Had the flatiron steak and Asiago ravioli - totally rocked. We came to Waltz last night on a Monday for dinner. 2 couples Large double decker with salad bars. Salad bar was fresh like usual and included soup of the day was potato bacon. Salad bar was really good, soup was average. The pizza was great!!! Cooked just right and down right tasty! Our server was very attentive while quite busy. Great service.
