Love, love, love Waltzing Kangaroo. Tonight I was craving their salted caramel slice, which I am pretty sure I have raved about before, but -when I got to the ordering page for desserts-GASP!-no Salted Caramel Slice!!!!! Nooooooooo!! But this is what you get with actual pastry chefs; they switch things up because they get bored making the same stuff all the time. I decided to try the sausage roll this time alongside the mashed potatoes and smushy peas. They sent me mashed sweet potatoes instead, but that's just what happens sometimes with delivery. Things get mixed up, and fortunately the sweet potatoes are delicious and probably better for me nutritionally anyway. The smushy peas are absolutely delicious. Always. Every time. Without fail. The sausage roll was wrapped in amazing pastry but unfortunately not particularly spiced...at all. It's just kind of like cooked mushy bland meat. It's okay, but could be much improved by some savory spices worked into the mix. A little roasted garlic, some salt and pepper can go a long way in making sausage more than just simply bland meat wrapped in pastry. That pastry -this bears repeating- was buttery, flaky, leaving lovely pastry crumbs for me to chase about the box after I finish. I got the baked custard tart and the chocolate pecan tart in lieu of my salted caramel slices I so eagerly anticipated. They were both delicious. I could have done with a bit more chocolate in the chocolate pecan tart but it was delicious anyway, absolutely packed with pecans and brown sugar and deliciousness. The custard tart was really pleasant too, maybe a wee bit overcooked but I consider that here in America you sort of have to do that sometimes, since we love lawsuits so much here. Still, it was simple and creamy and delightful nonetheless. I recommend The Waltzing Kangaroo to everyone I know and the friends that have gone are now lifelong fans. As am I. read more

It's cold, so pot pies seemed like a good idea. This place isn't messing around when it comes to tasty, loaded comfort foods. Hubs got the pork green chile pot pie, and I got the spinach andouille quiche. I was maybe halfway through my quiche, and his pie was almost gone - he just kept making happy noises while peeling bits of dough off the top and dipping them into his filling. My quiche had a surprising amount of sausage, cut small enough that it wasn't difficult to eat, but large enough to get a great flavor with every bite. We ended with a profiterole, which was totally stuffed with cream, to my husband's delight. Upshot - great spot for comfort food! read more

One of the most unique coffee shops I've been to. When I saw "Australian" I was in. The shop itself is pretty straightforward and modern with nice geometric touches throughout. The most important thing to notice, however, are the meat pies. Ranging from the classic steak and gravy to Thai peanut they have something for everyone. I went with their pie of the month, the Cheesy Dingo and a veggie Thai peanut pie. Saying they were delicious is an understatement. The crust is perfect! The best balance between crunchy, flakey goodness! I got a chai tea latte as well and it was fantastic! Overall, super pumped about this place and a little sad there is nothing like this around my hometown. I guess I have a go-to stop now whenever in Ft. Collins. read more

We were looking for a new place to try for a weekend dinner and saw good reviews about The Waltzing Kangaroo, so decided to visit. From checking out the menu on their website before visiting, we knew that most of their pies are meat based but were really happy to find that they have two vegetarian pies to choose from on the menu. When we visited they had lots of different varities of meat pies to choose from in the case but only 3 vegetarian pies total. Thankfully, they had the exact number we needed for our family! There were 2 pies with Veggies & White Cheese Sauce and 1 pie with Veggies in Thai Peanut Sauce. We decided on the Tucker Box which comes with a pie and 2 sides. Hubby and I had the Veggie and Cheese ones with sides of mushy peas and mashed potatoes and our son had the Veggie and Thai Peanut Sauce one with a side salad and mashed sweet potatoes. The staff was friendly and the restaurant was clean. Our meal was filling and tasted pretty good and had that homemade taste. We all thought our pies could have been elevated from "pretty good" status to delicioius by being spiffed up with some high flavor seasonings and spices or maybe just have some folks can add to their food if they so choose. It was a little disappointing to get there mid-day and see everything but the vegetarian options readily available. We asked if they would be making more vegetarian ones for the case that day and were told that they would not. The entire time we were there, we were the only customers and two employees were busy prepping pies, so not sure why more vegetarian ones weren't being made. So, if you are vegetarian and plan to grab a pie, to avoid disappointment, I'd recommend calling ahead to make sure they have some available. read more

I think I ended up getting the steak pie (indicated by the big 'S' on the crust), mashed potatoes, and the mushy peas. You'll rarely see me advocate peas, but these were delicious! We were touring the University and I was doing a scan through Yelp to find a place to get a bite to eat. So glad I found this place. One of us got the beet salad, which was good. However, the two of us that got the pies hit the jackpot! They were excellent. We tried the Thai green curry chicken and the lamb with Rosemary. Both were well seasoned. The Thai green curry chicken had just the right amount of heat. Their crust are fabulous-flaky and flavorful. The caramel slices looked decadent and did not disappoint. There was no wait for this goodness either. This is like a pot pie restaurant except the quality is 1 million times better than anything you would buy commercially. I am embarrassed to say that the only meat pies I ever ordered before Waltzing Kangaroo came from a grocery store freezer. Anyone ever try the $1 Banquet chicken pot pies? It's obviously got nothing on freshly made Aussie pies from this cute joint. The crazy thing about the meat pies is how there is no runniness of the insides. The sides at Waltzing Kangaroo are of pleasantly high quality for a fast eatery, from the beet salad, to mashers (potato or sweet potato) and the mushy peas (even if the name is slightly unappetizing). Pies of course are the star here and they were quite nice. I prefer a pastie/turnover style prep so the pastry on the bottom of the pie turns out a little more browned when baking than the aluminum tins here produce, but the pastry here is still quite nice. My only docker point is due: 1. The pie fillings while very flavorful are too thick. We tried the Guinness Steak & Mushroom; Bacon, Cheese and Steak; Chicken and cheese; and Chicken with Peanut Sauce. They all were thickened too much for our liking, which gave the gravy consistency not as pleasant a mouthfeel as we would've liked. 2. The aluminum plates give a sensation of eating in a military mess hall to my mind. The sound, feel, taste and sensation they impart to the eating experience undersells the quality, if homestyle, approach of Waltzing Kangaroo's good tucker. read more

My wife and I found WK in a web search. It sounded great, had decent reviews and after a visit to Sydney, we were anxious to extend the Australian experience. Perhaps it was the perfect storm but what started out as enthusiasm started getting chipped away and ended up far less enjoyable than we anticipated. To start out the restaurant was described as casual. I would say it was utilitarian at best. The first table we sat at rocked to the point we had to change for fear that our grandson would tip it over. That alone was not a killer. The pot pies were quite small for the price. I would expect something included for $8. The display case was nearly empty but there was at least one of each pie available. It just made you feel like you were late to dinner and got the left overs. The drinks were not displayed well and I'm still not sure what selections there were but after the sticker shock we decided water would be fine. The food arrived quickly. Normally our grandson loves mashed potatoes but didn't like these. Again not a deal breaker. I tried them. They were fine examples of mashed potatoes but nothing to write home about. The pies were tasty but not thrilling. I think for a little less money it would have been an acceptable level of ambience, food quality and amount. As it was, it left us wanting. read more

The Thai Green Curry Chicken and the Guinness Steak and Mushroom are my go-to favorites. They also make excellent quiches during the breakfast hours! Ate here for the first time, it was excellent. Super clean inside, well put together. Staff was very nice, courteous, prompt. I wanted to try everything. Surprisingly it is very filling. I had the lamb, wife had the Guinness beef. Hers was better but I'd love to see Guinness lamb. :) I'll certainly be back. Looking forward to breakfast there. I kept seeing this place pop up on my yelp suggestions and it always intrigued me so I finally stopped by to see what was up. I wasn't sure what to get so I asked the lovely lady at the counter for some suggestions and she seemed very nice and eager to assist. I ended up choosing the steak and gravy pie as well as the veggie pie with peanut sauce and a coffee. The steak and gravy was very good, the steak was perfectly tender and juicy and the gravy was thick and flavorful. I got the veggie and peanut sauce pie at her suggestion as well and let me tell you I don't usually get meatless options, but this pie was abso-freaking-lutely delightful. It had potatoes, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, and squash with a delicious peanut sauce that was slightly sweet and not too peanutty like some can be. I had to hold back in order to not eat both pies in their entirety as I am too afraid to check the calorie count. The crusts were perfectly flaky golden pastry that was both delicate and sturdy enough to hold itself together. I will definitely be back to try everything else they have! read more

Waltzing Kangaroo was recommended to me by a Local Food Tours guide in Denver. Went their for lunch today. Since it's so close to CSU, I was concerned parking would be an issue at noon. No problem, parking moves in and out of their lot frequently, so I got a spot. Well worth going!! The counter guy recommended the curry chicken pie. It is fantastic. Delicious chicken and the pastry is perfect. Couldn't help but eat the whole thing in one sitting. Thought I was going to have leftovers, but it's too good to stop. I had one of the WK's meat pies for the first time last night. It was amazing. The filling was pork and green chili and it had wonderful flavor but the crust was heaven. I will admit I am obsessed with pie crusts, that is what makes a great pie to me whether meat pie or fruit pie. My husband had the chicken curry and it was amazing as well. I believe the pies were $6.50 each. Which I found cheap for the quality and the size was perfect. I can't wait to have one on a cold winter day, perfect comfort food.
