I don't know why I haven't already written a review. We were here last year for the eclipse and bought a slew of pies (worrying that we wouldn't be able to find food during this event). We ended up freezing some and taking them home. They freeze really nicely. The pie doesn't look that big - but they are packed with flavor. The lamb with rosemary and the steak with Guiness are just solid meat flavor - in a great way. But, they also have interesting other flavors - like Thai green curry vegetable. Or chicken in a cream sauce. Sausage rolls are very traditional. But, if you are not into meat - there is an excellent spinach roll. Desserts - I haven't tried. But, oh do they look fabulous. I watched someone eat an apple turnover that was also stuffed with cream. I don't think people should have that expression on their face in public. It was just too joyful! If I ever tire of savory - I am going to get that turnover and eat it in the privacy of my home! read more

This place is well-priced, delicious, and has friendly, prompt service. I got a Cornish Pasty (a weekly item) and the ground beef was well-seasoned, while the vegetables were tender and delicious. I could've done with a liiiiiittle more gravy, but they managed to pack so much into a single $6 pasty that I don't consider it a problem. The woman who helped me was actually Australian (bonus points) and though she was clearly training a new employee, handled all of my requests in an efficient manner. Good food, if a bit on the pricey end. Although the pies are good and they have a decent variety of pies, I think that a lot of the beef pies and the one lamb pie can taste pretty same-y. Though, I think this is more due to the nature of the dish than it is the fault of Waltzing Kangaroo. If they choose to make traditional Australian food, then they're taking on both that cuisine's strengths and weaknesses. I wish they could do some seasonal specialities every now and then to combat this issue or just have more variety of pies on the permanent menu. If you are in the mood for meat pies, they certainly don't disappoint given how well-packed each pie is and how tender the meat is. In the mornings, Waltzing Kangaroo has breakfast pies and they are pretty grab-and-go friendly. The sides are pretty yummy. The mash sweet potatoes, in particular, are incredibly light and fluffy. Everything is always made fresh, which is awesome. Love that they sell egg tarts. And I don't mention this often, but the interiors are stunning and modern. However, I personally dislike their Thai chicken pie a lot. People unfamiliar with Southeast Asian ingredients/food theory tend to abuse the peanut sauce (there's a reason it's traditionally only used for dipping). It's the same as putting guacamole or pico on anything and calling it "Mexican" without regard to its culinary applications or flavor balance. For that reason, I think it is the worst thing on the menu. 15% of Australians are of Asian descent, so if they were doing it as a homage to that demographic, I think Waltzing Kangaroo can do better. Waltzing Kangaroo undoubtedly tries, and there's no denying they use high quality ingredients for their food and cook with love. It is perfect if you want a quick bite and be in and out in just a few minutes and serviced by friendly folks. Not to mention, they add much-needed variety to the food scene in Fort Collins. What holds it back, in my eyes, is that some of their pies are same-y tasting. But it's simple, down-to-earth Australian fare made with care. 3.90/5 stars. Recommended. read more

The Waltzing Kangaroo has been one of my absolute favorite restaurants in Fort Collins for 4+ years, but some recent changes are not great. The extremely reduced hours make it very difficult for professionals and students who are busy during the middle of the day to purchase food here and many of my favorite items, like the steak, cheese, & bacon pie, egg custard tart, chicken & Thai peanut sauce pie, and breakfast pies have been removed from the menu or are now only available during one month out of the entire year. Don't get me wrong, the pies they do still offer are very good. I want to continue purchasing food here to support them during this time, but the new hours and removal of my favorites make it difficult. I understand they needed to change things up to survive COVID, but I'm really hoping to see Waltzing Kangaroo return to its former glory in the future. read more

What a special place! It's small, quaint and clean. They specialize in meat pies. I didn't know what "meat pies" were until I visited them and am definitely a fan! They offer a huge variety... I had the chicken and white cheese with a side of mashed potatoes and I was a happy camper. They offer different meats and vegetarian options in addition to fun dessert pies too. The food comes out quickly and it's perfect if you're in a hurry. There is indoor seating but it is limited (but turns quickly). I discovered this place a couple of weeks ago. It specializes in Australian "meat pies." (Think chicken pot pie taken to an excellent level!) If you haven't experienced these pies, get over there! The pies come in lots of filling flavors: meats, curry, creamy, vegetables, and of course chicken! I've tried the green curry (a bit salty), chicken and a beef. Really, really good. Crispy crust that is thick and yummy. I also tried an apple turnover. It must have been great because I didn't wake up until the next day! They are in a small storefront west of the CSU campus near the Kinkos copy shop. Spacious feeling. Some seating. I did carry out, which was no-hassle and efficient. Very friendly staff! I love meat pies and this place definitely fulfilled the craving. That's what I get for watching the Great British Bake-Off. Pies were delicious to me and I loved their special which was the honey chili duck pie. Also tried the Chicken Thai Peanut, Steak & Gravy, and Steak & Guiness. I thought they were all pretty tasty, except the Thai Peanut. It was a little meh. We also got some fruit tarts and an egg custard tart. I loved the fruit tart. I am accustomed to Chinese-style egg tarts so the egg one was kind of weird to me. Not sure I liked the nutmeg on it. My friend found the pies to be a little heavy. The "gravy" in them was not oozy like a chicken pot pie. Definitely firmer which she didn't like. I can understand that which is why I included it here. Overall would definitely go again. Was stuck between giving 4 or 5 stars, but ended up with 4 because the Thai Peanut was really not good. read more

Having passed the Waltzing Kangaroo a couple times, I was fairly curious. I went in for lunch and am so glad I did. I tried as much as my friend and I could: the lamb and rosemary pie, Guinness steak and mushroom pie, fruit tart, espresso chocolate ganache tart, and a flat white. It was all easily some of the best food I've had in a while. The meat in the pies is so tender it melts in your mouth. The gravy is flavorful and rich. The tarts are decedent. Everything was amazing! I've been wanting to try this place for a long time now since it's a Aussie Pie place. That's Pot Pies folks, but they do have much more. With a big selection of meat, and some veggie, pies (13 plus the monthly special), there is plenty to choose from. I chose the Guinness, Steak, and Mushroom with a side of mashers with gravy. I was met by a pot pie stuffed to the bone with beef and mushrooms in a thick, savory gravy. The crust was light and flaky but held together amazingly well. The mashers was buttery and smooth, and the brown gravy was a little salty but still a great addition. For a $13 meal that includes a bottle of Pure Leaf tea, I thought it was a great deal. The desserts here are amazing as well. Made fresh every day, they feature tarts in fruit, chocolate, plus profiterole (my favorite). Conveniently located on Elizabeth right across from CSU. Parking in the center is limited but I found a spot easily. And, if you can't make it, the GrubHub sticker on he window means it can also be delivered. I will for sure be returning to the place that brings a piece of Australian foodie culture to FoCo. read more

I've only found one other place in Colorado that serves these amazing meat pies and I've got to say this place is hands down the best around. Yes it is way out of my way but we just happened to be up north and decided to check it out. It's located in a small little strip mall right across the street from the CSU campus. Going inside the aromas were amazing and we decided on the Guinness steak and mushroom, the lamb and rosemary, and my gf went with the pork & green chili and chicken with white cheese sauce. Then also picked up a mini flavor of the week Madras chicken curry. The first two steak and lamb ones though very good and great flavor, we found them to be super rich and not our favorites. Now the other ones I must say the pork and green chili and Madras chicken curry were out of this world, the flavor was spot on, the crust was perfectly baked and just down right on point. The chicken with white cheese sauce was great too but I found it to go even one step better mixing some of the pork green chili with it. My first time here and so far I'm very impressed! I walked in and was greeted almost immediately, and was asked if it was my first time there. She kindly walked me through the basics, which was helpful. They seemed to have a decent selection of savory pies, and I settled on the chicken satay. Yum! It was phenomenal! The crust was really flaky and the filling very flavorful. It was also fun watching the people work in the back - it looks like they make everything from scratch.
