I had the opportunity to visit on Sunday, September 14th. Garden City Center's historic gazebo green transforms into a vibrant, open-air Farmers Market. The Farmers Market is every Sunday from May 18 through September 28 from 10 AM to 2 PM. I wandered and checked out the local vendors. There were a great variety of them. I purchased a really cute coaster from The Book Emporium RI. The Book Emporium RI sells books that are wrapped and you have a blind date with a book. I also purchased a lavender sachet from 15 Lavender Place. I spoke with the owner and she told me all of the lavender is lovingly home-grown and hand-harvested, ensuring the highest quality and care go into every product. There were soothing lavender eye pillows, relaxing neck wraps, sprays, and bundles of dried lavender. I also went to Fully Rooted to purchase two bottles of freshly pressed juices-Watermelon Slice and Golden Greens. There were also local food trucks, farm booths, and local makers. The Garden City Center Farmers Market is a market for everyone. Either if you just want to stop for coffee, get produce for the week, flowers, dog treats, see alpacas, and so much more.

The quaint little area is a much more relaxed place to dine and shop than nearby Thayer Street or the Providence Place Mall. You won't often see large crowds or wait in long lines. If you are looking for some tasty bites to eat, to catch up on the latest fashion, or simply find a great read, the businesses on Wayland Avenue can satisfy whatever you are craving. We have been many times to eat, shop and relax...the area is in a residential setting, so for those who live nearby, it's like a block or two away walk to get a French croissant, grab the latest bestseller novel or get a funky lamp from a home decor store. It reminds me of Old Town Pasadena, but on a much smaller scale. I really like it. We went in the West Elm store and my in-laws bought some things for their home. We also went in a cute ladies boutique on the corner. My sister-in-law has purchased some things there. Great area to dine and shop.

The fitness club also left the shopping mall, so it's mostly small businesses right now. BankRI and Bottles are going to be the main tenants unless someone large moves in. Lots of parking and convenient to anyone living on the East Side or near Wayland Square.

The first floor consists of small eccentric shops and cafes while the upper floors have been converted into studio apartments. (I am entranced by the idea of residing there - just think, I can leave my apartment in my Jammies and walk downstairs to a cafe for my morning coffee.). We were staying in a hotel across the street and needed to get some Providence souvenirs. I looked up gift shops/souvenir places and it told me to head to one of the stores in The Arcade. Walking in, you could tell this place was extremely beautiful once. The architecture is incredible and there is a lot of potential here. People comment that it's underutilized and they aren't wrong. Even though the place is bright and sunny and feels safe, there's also a feeling of abandonment and dereliction that I just couldn't shake. There aren't many stores to shop at or places to eat at. There's one restaurant that seems to be doing well, we saw people at the whole time we were in Providence, but that was it. Hopefully, soon, more life will be injected into this place because it is very beautiful and historical and has a lot of potential.

There's parking for about 390 cars, so it's a pretty large lot and on average more than 10,000 cars pass through this part of N Main St every day. Almost half a million people live within a 10 mile radius of this shopping center, so it does have a good potential customer base. The traffic in and out of the center can be chaotic as many people visit the various stores in here...still, with a little patience, it works...
