I'll update my review at a later date but today I came to tour the facility. The young lady at the desk gave a very good tour and answered all my questions. I was once a member at the Y in a different county so I was doing a lot of comparisons to see if I would like it before I committed. I found the staff to be friendly. The facility was clean. The locker room to the pool needed to be cleaned and the shower curtains need to be replaced immediately. The equipment was clean and neat and the floors look very nice. The boat area was neat and the path at the lake was nice. There were a lot of people working on and watching the football games as this was a Sunday. There were a few teenagers inside but the majority were grown adults. Not sure it will be the same during the week but I'll see. The parking lot was neat and no crowds of people. Seems like a mature crowd was there. I saw older seniors and millennials working out. Middle aged men and women. I saw a lot of younger adults in the yoga room. So, I look forward to beginning my workout journey at this facility. read more

This is not a facility that demonstrates any core values plastered on their walls and literature. We were treated so callously by a staff member here last week that we immediately canceled our membership and left. read more

Forget all the high-priced franchises and go here. You'll bump into 95 Year Old WWII Iwo Jima Survivors (my Father In Law) and 20-Something Soccer Coaches. Clean, Modern machines, free weights, and facilities...Friendly Staff...lots of programs. I only get here when I'm in town from Atlanta visiting but it would be my Go-To over any other Gym. read more

Chaos at best in swimming lessons . My child's name was not on the list at EVERY lesson. Spent the entire lesson time asking which group he was supposed to be in. Nobody cared! The Warlick YMCA is a great facility for workouts - the equipment is well maintained, and the areas are always organized and clean. The front desk staff are welcoming and helpful with any information or questions asked. I joined the Warlick about 4 months ago and selected a personal trainer based on recommendations from current members. I began working out with Steve Kaplan and my experience with him has been very, very positive. Steve is a true professional in this field. He is always prepared with a white boarded exercise session suited to you personally and at the stage of your training. He is also flexible should I need to adjust the exercise set due a personal need, such as soreness in my shoulder from yardwork the day before. Motivation to continue an exercise program has been an issue for me in the past with trainers and Steve is able to keep me successfully challenged by his encouragement, personalized approach and genuine care & concern for his clients. It is apparent that he loves helping people achieve their fitness goals, and his sessions are far from being "just a job" for him. He is consistently enthusiastic and upbeat which helps me start each of my sessions in a great mindset. Steve brings his energy and total focus to me as his client for the time I'm with him, as I've had trainers in the past who at times scrolled through their phone while you're exercising vs. evaluating your every move for form and level. I have his undivided attention during our sessions. I'd fully and wholeheartedly recommend Steve as a trainer, whether you're just starting a program or returning to a personal training program. read more

This gym is entirely skinny high schoolers taking up all the equipment just to not use it and stare at their boney figures in the mirror. Absolutely obnoxious to have teenagers absolutely everywhere. The front entrance staff is also very rude. Canceled my membership and won't be back read more

The facility is always clean which is a positive. The staff however are uncooperative and short with responding. The upper staff are even more short with people and take no Joy in seeing anyone other than the upper staff. Recommend working there no! Recommend working out there maybe. They are always extremely short staffed and yet let go of someone today. (Me) Also anything having to do with child watch and after school is absolutely atrocious, they never have enough staff to cover watching the many children that they have and don't have the time to watch them all causing them to be able to do dangerous things. I really would not recommend sending your children here and less you were OK with them not being fully watched and taken care of. read more

I have been going to Warlick Y since it opened in 2017. Staff is wonderful, class instructors are friendly and motivating. The facility and grounds are pristine. Classes were held outside during the warm months of the first year of COVID. When the weather turned cold, classes were moved inside and limited in size to keep everyone safe. I told my husband that I had all these new friends at the Y. I didn't know their names and if they took off their masks, I likely would not recognize them, however we developed a bond that last even after COVID. I am so appreciative to have had a place to go, exercise and be with people during the pandemic. Warlick is a shining star for Gastonia. I love that members are a microcosm of the town and everyone is so friendly. Kudos to staff and members read more

Honestly every time I come here I get reminded why I want to leave. Just not enough space for the amount of people that work out and you are always fighting for space or equipment. And for how much I pay you'd think the equipment would be nicer. Plus the pool area is closed for 3 hours a day so half the amenities are unattainable during the hours I am available. read more

Let me begin by telling you that I was spoiled by Armstrong Athletic Club. The Y is a beautiful facility that has way too many people and children for my liking. Again I was spoiled by Armstrong. I've started training again with a former Armstrong trainer, and it makes me happy. It also makes me do that which I would not do without him telling me to do it. There were no racquetball courts and I'm not sure why they felt the need not to have them. We used to have them at the Y on Clay Street And of course we had them at Armstrong. I wish they would buy Armstrong and let us use their racquetball courts, and weight room. I've heard a lot of people complain that there's no room. That would solve my problem and their's. I'm tormented by the amount of people that do not clean their equipment as they leave, so I suggest pre-cleaning if you have my germ phobia. When I signed up I was given two guest passes and when I tried to use them, we were told that they are no longer honoring them. We did not agree and I did not let up until they let my gas in. As a rule of law, I believe that you need to honor that what you have given, and then move forward without giving out the passes. In all fairness to them I was told that people were abusing their passes, and we're opening up doors and letting people in that Not members and did not have passes. I'm looking forward to trying out the boats in the little pond that I have. Doesn't seem you can go very far but in a circle, but I like water and don't care. I will row, row, row their boat! There are a lot of classes that you can take. I love the body flow class. I will try to make that every week. read more

I signed my children up for the Warlick summer camp and have been completely misinformed on the program. We found out on orientation night that the kids will be outdoors all day with the exception of the days they get to swim in the indoor pool for 45 mins. They do not limit outdoor activities until the heat index is 105 degrees. It did not state this on flyers, on the website when registering or the 2 calls I made inquiring about camp prior to registration. It is recommended that children bring bug spray and sunscreen but they are not allowed to assist your child with either. How is having small elementary children out in 90 degree + weather safe for 8 + hours A day. Completely Ridiculous read more

The facilities are nice, and the staff are always friendly, but the Summer Camp is awful. The children were made to sit out in the heat all day, and were bored a lot of the time. Some of them were calling it Camp Torture. COVID cannot be used as an excuse for this because after my child started complaining about camp, I did more research (which is my fault for not it doing before), and parents from years prior have complained about their children having to sit out in the heat all day which is why the pavilion was built, but it does little to protect the children and counselors from the heat. It is just a glorified patio deck. My son was so excited to attend camp, and he left sad, and disappointed. He hated it. read more

We have used the YMCA primarily for child care, & I will warn you that if your child has any behavioral issue, this is not the place for them. My son has severe ADHD which he takes medicine for, but he is still not always super easy to deal with. I'm all about accountability when it comes to my kids, so this wasn't a situation where the parents say "my angel would never". We were getting calls on at least a weekly basis during after school care & summer camp & we took every one of them seriously until he finally was expelled from the summer program (which he also attended at the Pharr YMCA in Mcadenville). He finally told us they would make the children stay outside in the heat & when he would ask for water they would tell him he'd have to wait. Since he has started at another child care facility & more recently school, we have had ZERO complaints about him & his behavior, so that tells me that he wasn't always necessarily the problem. I also had a staff member call my cell phone twice in a row (I didn't even have time to check the message from the first call before she called back & left another) a few days after starting a new job. She left 2 very condescending messages stating "he's your son & you need to come get him" (he had a stomachache) & never bothered to contact anyone else on the extensive emergency contact list I was required to fill out during registration. No matter how good the price, I would not send him back to the Y for child care, & if your child is not 100% perfect I would not suggest sending them either. read more

This is a new facility, which opened mid December 2017. When this facility opened it replaced 3 other facilities. Central YMCA, South Gaston YMCA and the Armstrong Athletics Club. Nice facility in upscale neighborhood. Maybe too nice for what it replaces. Has very large common areas with one even having a "fireplace "! Why, no one knows, unless you go to the Y to hang out. Only people I saw sitting around fireplace were employees. As I have stated, large common areas, but everything else seems on the small side when you consider that it is replacing 3 facilities! Has 3 locker rooms. Men's, Women's and Family. All 3 locker areas are very cramped and accommodate 2 or 3 people at the most, at a time. Seating to get dressed is VERY limited, if a seat is provided at all. It becomes crowded very quickly and you may have to wait your turn to get to your locker! On more than one occasion there were no available lockers! You have to wait on someone to leave or go to The Family Locker Rm and try your luck there. Showers are another experience. Nonadjustable in direction or stream type, they shoot out and hit shower curtain or shoot into walkway. Not very handy. Facility has 2 pools. One a recreation pool and the other a lap pool. Seem nice enough. No Hot Tub, which was a significant draw at the South Gaston Y. Has Steam Room and Sauna. Tried to use Sauna a few times but it was too small. Can comfortably seat four or eight if you don't mind some sitting between your legs! Overall this would have been an outstanding facility if it replaced ONE of the other facilities. It is just too small and not thought out. Too bad! I have to move on. read more

My husband and I just joined this YMCA. We are first time members. We enjoyed our first visit there and after the walk-through it did seem a little small however that may be the right size for this community. Although I have not been when it was busy. The woman that helped us sign up and the other employees were very nice and welcoming. At the end of applying, we were introduced to the executive director as she was walking by . She was obviously faking being polite, not very welcoming and noticeably in a hurry to leave work. It was a couple minutes until closing time. Prior to being introduced to her she was walking around the lobby complaining about having to do something which I thought was odd and even worse when I found out she was the ED. Hopefully we enjoy this location aside from the ED everyone else seemed nice. We are especially excited about the lake and the summer activities we'll be able to do in the water. read more

The facilty is quite small although group exercise offerings are decent and the instructors pretty knowledgable and kind. However, the operations and front office staff are incredibly unprofessional and unhelpful. I've never experienced such rude and disorganized behavior at a YMCA, or any other establishment for that matter. Unbelievable and very disapointing. read more
