They say you never forget your first. The first time I ever tried hibachi was at a place called Miyabi in Fayetteville, NC. Now, I can't tell whether it's pure nostalgia or merely personal preference. But that place has since been what wifey and I consider to be the "gold standard" for what hibachi should taste like. It's been nearly 15 years and our opinion hasn't changed since. So, when we happen upon a place like Wasabi, we're certainly gonna notice and criticize culinary anomalies such as not using so much as an OUNCE of seasoning on any of the proteins, veggies, or rice. Oh, and spoilers up front - it's never a good sign when the appetizers outshine the main course. Lobster Rangoon: I'll be honest here. I never knew anyone offered Lobster Rangoon until we came here. I suppose it was inevitable sooner or later; a logical ingredient to use, if not crab. Well anyway, this app was pleasantly superb! Unfortunately, it's also where the evening peaked. Nevertheless, it's a 9 out of 10, highly recommend!! Clear soup: Normally, I never even bother giving this its own paragraph. I just wanted to highlight my first impressions rather quickly to say, while not ALL bad, it was mostly lacking in flavor whilst simultaneously harboring a hint of spice. All that's to say...there's not a lot going on here. I guess I should have asked if substituting soups was an option here. It's...whatever. 3 out of 10. Lobster and steak: Okay. A few things of note here - there's apparently no option to upgrade your cut of steak to filet as with most other hibachi restaurants. So, I assume this was a top sirloin of sorts. Naturally, I got mine mid-rare and it's a good thing, too. Because despite its ostensibly rubbery texture, I can't begin to imagine how tough its exterior would have been were it cooked well done. And no...there was zero seasoning added to it, outside of soy sauce, some butter, and a bit of minced garlic. Whole thing tasted like bland puppy chow. Fortunately, the half cup or so of additional soy sauce *kinda* saved it. 4 out of 10. Now, the lobster tail and appetizer shrimp were slightly better, mostly due to the added dash of lemon during cooking, combined with how well it pairs with the yum yum sauce. But once again....not an ounce of seasoning could be damned. What a let down! 5 out of 10. Fried rice: here's where I usually can gauge pretty quickly where the chef stands in their ability to season food. It's normally the first thing to come off the grill. But I left this one for last because this is, funnily enough, where the majority of that soy sauce you see in my "after" photo went. It's like the chef went out of his way to add the absolute minimal amount of flavor possible to the rice. It's nights like these I wish they were the type of place that left salt and pepper on the table. Oh, and I've NEVER been much a fan of peas in fried rice, much less peas at all. After adding about half a bottle of soy sauce, this one's a 4 out of 10 for me. Look, I don't want or like to lament on places like this. After all, hibachi holds a special place in my heart. Hell, even the service was fairly decent. But cordiality can only get you so far if the product you're serving is mediocre as hell and ineptly prepared. The one GOOD thing I can say about this experience is at least we know there's no need to travel so far to get decent hibachi. Ergo, we'll be sticking to the likes of Sakura and The Seafood King in Nashua and Manchester, respectively. Wasabi in Salem gets 3 steak & lobster dinners in desperate need of seasoning out of 5. read more

I can honestly say I never have had a more uneven dining experience than last Saturday evening at Wasabi Steakhouse. Party of eight. First, the service was very heavy-handed. No grace whatsoever. Second, the cook was very heavy on the butter, which I found totally unnecessary and out of place in an Asian restaurant. They screwed up my oder by giving me salmon instead of chicken. Wow. I am trying to process this horrendous experience....This was probably top 5 worst restaurant service I have ever had. This waiter was so confused. He absolutely does not belong in food service. We had frequented this restaurant quite a bit in the past. Either at the hibachi or at the regular tables. It had always been good tasty food and a great experience. Today was my daughter's birthday. She chose to sit at the regular tables. I ordered miso soup, green salad. And sushi. The miso soup was kind of tasteless. In the past, it has been better. My dear mom always said was a sign of the future meal in an Asian restaurant. The green salad was tasty, as in the past with that yummy ginger dressing. Now here's what really upset us. Mr Confused Waiter brings my sushi to the table adjacent. The people there are not sure if it is theirs. So they pass it around the table. My husband says "that looks like yours". That table tells Mr Confused that it is not their order. He takes it back. He brings it to the side area for a few minutes. He then tries to put it in front of me. I tell him that I am not going to eat it. The people touched it. He's now insisting that they did not. And staring at it. Picks it up and says It's fine. I say. I am not eating it. His insistence that it is good and fine and they did not touch it takes a good few minutes. This is all very embarrassing as I feel that he is not honoring my feeling about not wanting to eat it. I have multiple guests watching my interaction. On top of the fact that my kids are getting embarrassed. I tell him that I don't want this sushi. He finally takes it and says he will make another one. Mr Confused Waiter then bring my husbands order to the same adjacent table. The little child at that table touched it. My husband sees that happen. My husband says he will not eat it. Again Mr Confused Waiter is insisting that it is fine. My husband decided to cancel his sushi order completely. (By the way, the table that mistakenly was offered both of our sushi platters ended up also canceling their sushi order. They said that it took to long.) I also ended up waiting so long for my sushi part 2 that we had to take it to go. The sushi was so delicious! I DO FEEL HORRIBLE FOR THIS TALENTED SUSHI CHEF. I will give kudos to the manager who deeply apologized. He also did the right thing and took 20% off the bill. Which is why my initial 1 star was raised to a . Food deserves 4.5 stars but service is 2. This was one of the favorite sushi place with many choices of rolls. The appetizer was creative. I liked the Crazy Friday and Volcano Roll. The presentation was pretty and flavor was good. Here comes the BUT. I went there again with friends for sushi and reserved a table in advance. But when we got there, we were asked to sit at the Hibachi and told that we could still order sushi. The place we sat was cold and there was some cold air blowing into our direction, so we had to wear coats the whole time. We ordered some rolls and the waiter forgot one order. We asked several times and he told us that chef was making it. At the end we still didn't get our till after 30 min and everyone else was already done. I wonder if the chef went to catch the fish? What a great experience and meal! My aunt and I came here for dinner to celebrate her birthday. We opted for the hibachi style dining. There is a lot of seating and we were able to be places quickly. Our meal started off with a salad that comes with yummy ginger dressing and soup. It was so hard not gulping it all down because it was so tasty. I really wanted room for the main course. Oh boy. Not disappointed at all! I ordered the scallops and shrimp. Everything was cooked perfectly. My aunt's rare steak was perfect. She definitely enjoyed her birthday dinner. You have to get the fried rice. I want more! So amazing! It's nice that this restaurant has a full bar too. We were able to enjoy mai tais and wine. Yes!!! Everyone at the restaurant was so kind. I've eaten here three times now with my young daughter. The last visit included my wife and my daughter's friend. The sushi is good, the teriyaki steak in the Bento was lower quality steak, the service is lacking. Particularly on the last visit. The last server seemed a bit put out just to be doing his job. Kept having to ask for basics just to eat the meal. Plates, utensils, etc.. never checked on us to see if we needed anything. A refill on water for example. I believe he was complaining in his native tongue over minor requests. For example we ordered a seaweed salad to be eaten by four people. He put the bowl down on the table. We had nothing but soy sauce dishes and miso soup at this point. We requested some plates, and he brought two. He appeared to be complaining with that request. When we asked for two more plates he again seemed put out. We ordered four cucumber rolls for the kids (two each). One plate had two one plate had one and the last roll was on our plate with our regular sushi roll. I pointed this out and he said the chef put it on there. So we moved that roll to the girl's plate and it pretty much fell apart in the process. We wanted to order ice cream for our daughter and her friend, but one wanted chocolate and the other vanilla. The ice cream was two scoops for $6.00. "Could we have a scoop of vanilla and a scoop of chocolate? We don't do that. Okay. We'll have two orders of ice cream, one chocolate and one vanilla with two side plates, please." Three times, I've ordered a kids cup of lemonade at $2.50 but the bill had them at $3.25 The place is busy, the sushi was good, I just don't think I'll be back there. Today I waited 2 hours for a pick up order and when I asked how much longer it would be they said 20 minutes. 40 minutes later I asked again and they said it will be another 45 minutes. 3.75 stars. Sushi was high quality and we really appreciated having photos to go with the specialty rolls. Prices were fair for the size rolls you get. The large sake is actually large too! Good taste and strong. Our appetizer soups came out at barely above room temperature, but our server quickly remedied that and brought us new ones. Nice flavor on the miso as well as clear soup too. The reason for less stars is that my swordfish hibachi meal had over cooked fish that was very dry. Decent flavor, but I assume the fish was previously frozen based on the tiny, symmetrical filets. Other than this, everything was tasty and we felt like our bill was a great value compared to other hibachi restaurants. Since it is Mother's Day, my wife (and daughter) wanted to go to Wasabi. As usual, Wasabi's food is delicious. I had the filet and shrimp and my wife and daughter had the filet and chicken. The chef did a really good job entertaining us and cooked the food well. The issue we had is the prices went up (I expected that), but the quantity of the food went way down across the board. It started with the dipping sauces, the dishes were 1/3 full (why not ask customers if they want dipping sauce and fill up the customers who want it and don't waste dipping sauce on customers who don't want any). For shrimp, per usual, the customers who didn't order shrimp were given two shrimp. I ordered shrimp and was given 5 shrimp. The fried rice, filet and chicken were noticeably in less proportions as well. My wife and I feel the proportions were down a good 25-30%. My wife and I were not full when we left the restaurant (bill was $130 with tip). My wife said it best, we were happy to celebrate Mother's Day at a restaurant we really enjoy going to, but we aren't in a rush to go back based on this experience. read more

Went to Wasabi for Sushi. I have been here several times for the Hibachi experience. The presentation was great. We were so excited to dive in. To our disappointment the rice was warm and falling apart and on our final taste we both had a piece of hard chewy sushi that made o it stomachs turn. When we brought it up to the waitstaff, she never involved a manager to address the experience but did offer us two new pieces which were fine. When she asked the sushi chief in front of us if they could replace the pieces of bad fish they chuckled in Japanese at our expense. I'm not sure what happened here. If it's a bad night or lack of management but this will be the last time I come back. read more

A group of 4 of us went to Wasabi on a Friday night around 8 pm. 2 Vegans, 2 Soy-free Vegans. We had just left another sushi place that refused to do custom rolls (bummer), so we were curious to see what Wasabi would say... our very friendly waiter said "No problem!" and he took our hand-written list of about 11 rolls to the chef! They came out with a giant boat of all Vegan soy-free rolls (sweet potato questionable bc its fried, but the soy-eaters were happy). They were great. They check on us to make sure everything was good and were generally just really awesome about the whole situation. Note: this was 8pm after dinner rush. Price was quite reasonable. Thanks for being awesome. We will definitely be taking our Sushi business here from now on. read more

All I can say is WOW. The food was amazing! We had the lobster Rangoon to start. It was so good! Most rangoons fillings are very thick, this one was very smooth, very easy to eat. Then we had the shrimp tempura sushi. It was just out of this world. What made all the difference was the sauce that was on it. Not sure what it was but it was amazing. So the appetizer was out of this world. Then to the entrees. We got chicken and filet mignon and fillet mignon and shrimp. This comes with soup and salad. Soup was one of the best soups I've had in a hibachi restaurant. The rice was amazing same with the proteins. The only downside was that one of the filet mignon was a little cold. But other than that it was amazing! The place is fairly modern and pretty brightly lit. The service was good. There was a wait time for 30 minutes for hibachi so we didn't get that experience but overall great place. In our opinion this place may be better than tomo which is a competitor half a mile down the street. As always to all my ginger ale lovers, it was some average ginger ale, but it got the job done. read more

Tried Wasabi with a friend because we're always looking for a new sushi place. Great selection of standard rolls and speciality rolls, and great price for the amount of fish you get. They also offer hibachi and seemed relatively busy for a mid-afternoon meal. Service was great and quick, we got our miso soup and edamame extremely fast! Which was great since we were able to nibble while we waited for their chefs to whip up our beautiful masterpieces of sushi rolls. There are lunch special, however they are not available in Sunday. Wasabi has a nice selection of sushi, Japanese, American Chinese, and Thai food. I had the spicy tuna roll and a California roll recently and both were solid albeit pricey. In the past I have also tried their beef tataki, spring rolls, chicken pad Thai, and beef negamaki. The negamaki wasn't my thing texturally (a bit tough/rubbery), spring rolls were nice, pad Thai was solid, and I loved the tataki w/ special dipping sauce. All in all a solid choice for a variety of tastes. I look forward to sitting down, having a cock tail, and trying more soon. Stopped in again and had some sushi. Ikura and salmon/avacado roll. The miso soup was typical miso soup and I enjoyed the lobster Rangoon. My scallop dinner came out and looked amazing! I took a bite of one and they were rancid! I don't know how the cook did not smell they were rancid before cooking them because they were pungent even after being cooked and tossed in the teriyaki sauce. I let the waiter know right away and he was apologetic and asked if I wanted something else. I ordered the chicken teriyaki, and my wife is done eating and I'm waiting for my meal... obviously right? The vegetables taste good, but the chicken teriyaki is almost flavorless and disappointing. I really wanted to like this place. I went last night and had a terrible experience. My boyfriends meal was delivered and finished before I ever received my meal. His steak was extremely rough and rubbery, basically impossible to eat. Sat at table and didn't do the hibachi, ordered the maki c combo and the filet and noodles. Salad and soup were average at best. The sushi was disappointing, was any better then something you would get from stop n shop. The filet I ordered medium rare and it came out as a well done sirloin which they tried to tell me it was a filet it wasn't. The noodles were also very bland as well it wasn't a good meal.
