Went for lunch. Great menu with enough variety for everyone in the car. Counter service is quick and easy. We got a burger, a halibut sammy, and some brussels sprouts. Everything was delicious. Adding mustard on the sprouts or the tasty aioli on the fried fish, little touches to elevate the food from simple to extraordinary! Some locals recommended this place to me after they saw me disappointed when I found a long-time favorite food truck that served fresh fish and chips out on the Spit, closed. I promptly came, and I hear on my trips to Homer ever since. I look forward to it all winter! I have had their halibut/rockfish/cod and chips, halibut sandwich, rockfish tacos, carne asada taco, a superb double cheeseburger hamburger, frozen ice cream, and more. They are all delicious. The breading on the fish is tasty and not too thick; the seafood itself is flaky and moist; the hamburgers are thick and well-seasoned; all the fixings for the sandwiches and tacos are fresh: tomatoes, lettuce, onions, etc., and the tarter sauce is outstanding. The staff is friendly, efficient, and helpful; the restaurant is clean and attractive; there are places to sit indoors and out, tables in and out, covered and uncovered. It can be very busy but they give you a beeper to advise you when your order is ready and there are places to sit while you wait. The setting, a commercial boatyard, is interesting and entertaining, and there is a distant view of the Bay. I highly recommend this restaurant. read more

I came in today for the first time with my family including my 5 year old daughter. While others in my group had been here before and enjoyed it this was my first time dining. Unfortunately it will be my last. We waited patiently for around 17 minutes in a cramped line. That is no problem. I understand busy weekends. But once I finally got to the counter and asked a polite question about ordering chicken tacos for my daughter who is a picky eater I was met with a completely inappropriate reaction. The menu is clearly built for adults and while they do not offer chicken tacos specifically they do serve chicken and they do serve tacos. I simply asked if it might be possible. Rather than a simple "Sorry we cannot do that" I was met with a lecture. The cashier snapped at me for even suggesting a modification and told me how busy they were and how I should not be asking for anything custom. I immediately apologized and said it was fine. I would just order the beef tacos and a chicken breast separately and make it work. Despite this she remained rude and continued trying to rush me through the order even though we were the last in line and the rush had already passed. Then she told me my order would take 25 to 35 minutes in a tone that strongly suggested we should just leave instead. I calmly asked why she was being so hostile. What had I said or done to deserve that kind of treatment especially in front of my young daughter. She replied that she was just doing her job and that informing us of the wait was standard. That is fine. But the way she said it made it clear we were not welcome. Still I ordered. Three basic items including a couple tacos a chicken breast and a halibut sandwich came to 60 dollars. Despite the poor interaction I tipped 12 dollars making it a 72 dollar meal where I had to bus my own table and still be treated like an inconvenience. And to be clear I was not rude. I did not raise my voice. I asked a simple question and tried to deescalate when things became uncomfortable. After I walked away and joined my family who had already been served our food took an additional 20 minutes. While I quietly and briefly recapped the awkward ordering experience to my relatives the cashier came back out and laughed out loud directly at us. It was humiliating and deeply unprofessional. Several in our group witnessed it. We stayed calm ate our food cleaned up and left. Now the owner has responded to my father's honest review by making false claims that we were abusive and caused distress to staff. That is completely untrue. I work in a service based creative industry. I understand how hard customer facing jobs can be. I was patient and kind. I even apologized when I was the one being treated poorly. If they had simply said "We are sorry you did not have a good experience" that would have been the end of it. But instead they chose to double down and misrepresent what actually happened. I came here to enjoy a meal with my family. Instead I was made to feel like a burden and then blamed afterward. It is a real shame because I had heard great things. But my experience was the opposite and I cannot recommend it. read more

This was fantastic. We were tired and hungry from a trip to see bears on Katmai with Alaska Bear Adventures and saw this was close by and highly rated. We ordered halibut and chips with fries and cod and chips with a side salad. Both were delicious. The batter on the fish has texture and great seasoning. The side salad was pretty and fresh. We got a chuckle from the menu. You order at the window inside the door and wait to be called to pick up your food. Friendly, low key atmosphere. read more

We normally love this place, but this time our family apparently overwhelmed the person taking the order. We had four small groups and we know the drill; be patient and understanding of a hard working staff. What happened totally surprised me. The lady taking our orders was clearly irritated, and her irritation seemed to grow with each order. When my grand daughter asked for a chicken taco, this employee snapped back, something about it not being on the menu. This was no problem, and when the order was finished, she rudely said that the order would take about a half hour. We objected to her tone, but she just shrugged her shoulders. I understand that these jobs are tough, but that was no reason for her to be absolutely mean spirited in her interaction. No one was rude, no one provoked this interaction. To make matters worse, as we were debriefing our experience she came out and laughed at our group. As the manager (David) later said, she was NOT crying. She laughed out loud before taking dirty dishes back to the kitchen. David was not at the counter and did not see this interaction. We have been coming here ourselves and bringing friends and family here for several years but this is our last. Not because the food was bad, but because this interaction was inexcusable, and the owner inexplicably shifted blame to our party. Four others witnessed this interaction and were appalled by it. The service we received today, and the lack of an apology was regrettable. But the failure of the owner to simply apologize ruined our experience. read more

I'm ashamed to say that although I'm a lifelong Alaskan, I'm not the biggest seafood person. I was initially drawn to the boatyard for the burgers but I stumbled across a photo of their spicy halibut sandwich and was immediately sold on ordering it. It's one of those scenarios where you see a picture and just know that it's going to be good. Man... it was delicious. It's going to be a sandwich I won't forget any time soon. I was visiting Homer Alaska from Arizona and was looking for a restaurant to eat at on Yelp. Based on the photos this restaurant looked like it had the best food in town. The Boatyard Cafe definitely did not disappoint. I got here 15 minutes before closing, and was greeted with great service. I ordered the greenhorn burger, it was one of the best burgers I've ever got from a restaurant, the fries were good too. My dad got the Yardbird and said the chicken was the juiciest chicken he's had, and his salad was good and fresh. He also got an order of Brussel sprouts and said they were really good as well. If you're in Homer Alaska don't bother going to eat anywhere else. The Boatyard Cafe is where it's at. read more

We heard rave reviews about the Boatyard Cafe and had to find the restaurant and wanted to try it. Unfortunately when we found it, it was closed on Monday. Probably why they didn't answer their telephone when I tried to call them. This restaurant is a local favorite and only gets tourists that are very determined. It is not on the Spit or downtown Homer. It is located out by the Homer Airport and actually in the Commercial boat harbor not the sport harbor. If you head out to the Spit but turn left at the bottom of the hill before the lake and go to the very end of that road you will find the small cafe inside the chain link fence to the boat repair. I encourage anyone visiting Homer attempt to find this jewel in a sea of stones. You won't regret it, but is home cooked food for working people and not touristy or fancy. There is another route but I don't want to confuse you. I also left out the road and lake name to make it a little more challenging. Normally I would not rate someplace that I have not eaten at but in this case my sources as to it's quality are numerous and trusted friends and locals. Judge for yourself. read more

The boatyard was our last meal in Homer. It was heart-wrenching because we truly loved this amazing place. As we drowned sorrows of leaving in a fish sandwich and some tacos we sat on the patio and just took in the views. The glacier you can see in the mountains across Katchemak bay was so cool to look at while we ate. I watched an Eagle fly by and land in a tree as well. The fish sandwich was pretty good. A lot of people were ordering it so I went with it and was not disapointed. Wasn't the best I've had but I did like it. The bun was very good! When I saw the tacos at first glance I expected the O'le lady was going to be really bummed with them. To my surprise she said they were very good, and she really liked them! I recently visited The Boatyard Cafe and had a mostly positive experience. The location is pretty cool, offering a nice ambiance by the water. However, parking is very limited and the place isn't wheelchair accessible, which could be a significant drawback for some visitors.The inside of the cafe is quite small with limited seating, so we decided to take our food to go. Because of this, I can't comment on the service, but the food was excellent. We ordered the fish and chips made with halibut, and it was delicious. The fish had great flavor, was not greasy, and had a perfect crispiness. The accompanying sauce was also delicious. The fries, however, were just okay.Despite the limitations in parking and seating, I would definitely go again for the food. The Boatyard Cafe is worth a visit, especially if you're a fan of well-prepared fish and chips. read more

10/10 halibut fish and chips - $30 for full, $15 for 'small.' Got my food in 10ish minutes. I sat outside - not busy at 15:00 on a Monday. Music playing outside, relaxing atmosphere when not busy. Very cramped during weekends and during summer. We came Saturday at 16:00 and they had to close early because ran out of all fish. So I drove 1 hr 43 minutes each way JUST for these fish and chips on my day off. I consider it worth it. read more
