So the first thing that jumped out at me with this place were the coffee mugs. Maybe other places do this, and I'm just out of the loop, but for all you can drink coffee you get to pick your own mug from the wall. I loved that. Even though I picked a boring, blue, 'Office Space' style, they had a ton of handmade unique ones. I could only give this 4 stars because of the dog factor. Too many dogs everywhere. Ones foaming at the mouth, some sitting in front of the entry way, etc... but I guess if you're a dog lover that's a reason to bump it up to five stars. The morning I went here was perfect. Perfect company, perfectly overcast, and a mostly calm, relaxing morning. I'd recommend getting there early, as it seemed to get a little packed once the morning started going. read more

I really enjoy studying at Wash Perk. They have plenty of places to sit, plenty of outlets, and plenty of people watching. Okay, so I'm sure you don't care that I study here and would prefer to hear about the coffee, snacks, staff, etc. Well, I can safely say that I love all of the aforementioned. The coffee is great, and they have a convenience line for coffee (which is genius). There is a solid snack selection; however, I would enjoy it if they had some better oatmeal and maybe some yogurt. I like the scones a lot (like too much because it's starting to show). And, finally, the staff is great. They remember me every time (even if I neglect them during the school year and then show up non-stop during finals). Some people don't care about this "friendly neighborhood" atmosphere thing (or at least they don't think they do), but it really is a nice little cherry on top. Drop your Starbucks, and come pick up a real mug and have a conversation. This place is what life is all about. OH, AND, they have a great setup for dogs outside (and treats inside). I am not a coffee drinker. I know, I know, but really I have a good reason. Somehow I'm allergic to it and it makes me really, really sick if I drink it. That being said, I have many friends who are coffee drinkers and it seems like coffee shops are good places to meet and catch up. Thankfully Wash Perk offers more than coffee. I opted for the vanilla chai and it was delicious! I ordered a large, and it came in one of the biggest coffee/tea cups that I've ever seen. And, stayed hot to the very end. The ultimate neighborhood hangout. Even on a Tuesday in the middle of the day this place was packed inside and out. The space is airy and open despite the number of tables they have packed in. The community table is my favorite. I could see myself lounging for hours and watching people come in and out. Someone else called Wash Perk quaint and I couldn't think of a better word. It is the quaintest of the quaint. As for their drinks, it was a difficult decision, but I fell in love with the Lavender Marshmallow Latte after the barista described it as a "cup of your Grandmother's house". Odd, but intriguing. Wash Perk is the perfect neighborhood coffee shop! It is within walking distance from my house which is amazing. The staff is always kind and efficient. I am truly obsessed with their honey cinnamon latte (I prefer it iced!). All of the pastries I have tried have been delicious too. They also have a lot of great outdoor seating! Wash Perk holds a special place in my heart. I lived in the neighborhood for years, and this was my go to spot. As an elementary school teacher, I spent most Sundays posted up here to lesson plan and make flip harts during my first two years of teaching. Then, during the week, this is one of the few places that opens by 6 (or even earlier some mornings) so that I could grab a hot drink on my morning commute. I love the community vibe here. You will typically see friends meeting up to chat, the baristas are some of the friendliest in the city, and it's not uncommon to see one of your neighbors pop in while you're there. If you need some solo time, you can find a small table to do some reading, but know that this coffee shop is not the typical quiet one if that's what you're looking for. There are numerous outlets, but the wifi tends to be iffy some days. Tip: set up your computer and see if you can access the wifi before grabbing a coffee and settling in. My only complaints: it's so popular now that it's almost too busy. I know, a silly complaint, but I can hardly ever find a spot to sit and work these days when I go by. The other one is that whenever I get a hot almond milk latte, the milk always tastes burnt. While I appreciate the non-dairy options, I think a little more attention needs to be paid by the baristas making the drink. I've learned my lesson and I no longer order that option... Though I don't live in the neighborhood any longer, my nostalgia for this shop is strong. We came here out of desperation when Trompeau was already closed, and this seemed like a good substitution. Wrong. The coffee was bland and overpriced, and most of the baked goods are gluten free (i.e. yuck). We got several pastries and were sorely disappointed by all but a croissant (non-GF). I was excited by reviews which mentioned almond milk, but they want a 75-cent surcharge! Wild. I might as well go buy a half-gallon at the supermarket. read more

I love coffee places they aren't Starbucks! This place is like 3 blocks off of Wash park. They have some great speciality drinks like a Honey Cinnamon Latte, which is made with real cinnamon and real honey...love it! There prices seem high like starbucks but I think their drink sizes are bigger so you end up getting ahead or head..your choice! ;) They have bike racks and dog leash areas outside by their patio, so that is awesome for all of the Colorado dog lovers out there! I have known that Wash Perk existed, but I don't get out too much from June through October. This being November, I had the opportunity to visit. I wanted a place that would be good to sit and talk with a potential author. The location of Wash Perk is helpful for meeting with folks. Anytime I can say, "it's on the corner of This and That," it makes my life easier. Parking on the street was easy, as well. Inside, the atmosphere and aroma is inviting. I chose an ironic mug (Starbucks!) from their display--if you are having your coffee there, they encourage you to use a mug. It's obvious their mugs are donated, and I think that's great. Why buy new when you can recycle a mug? I've got a few that I'm going to donate. The coffee was delicious, and made perfectly. Their selection of pastries and breads, if you are into that, seemed on par with other shops of the same ilk. I was happy with the service. The barista was congenial and seemed happy to help me. She was never condescending, and chatted with me. Overall, it was a lovely experience, and I recommend Wash Perk. The only thing that was not perfect was the Wi-Fi. I had heard it was free, but signing up on it was not automatic--it showed up as locked on my iPhone. I did not have known the password, and maybe they give it out to patrons upon request. I love the Perk! I live in Wash Park, so this place is super convenient for me. Every barista I've ever encountered has been friendly and provided me with excellent service. They were especially welcoming when I first moved here, several of them even introduced themselves when they found out I was new in town. The coffee is excellent, as is the chai. Their tea selection is small but has a nice variety. They offer some food items - flavored oatmeal, breakfast burritos, salads, and ice cream sandwiches, along with the typical pastry selection. All the food is made locally, individually packaged, and kept in a large fridge or freezer at the front of the store. They have a microwave if you want to heat up a burrito or pastry. I don't go for the food, but it's nice to have some tasty treats available if I'm there for half a day. A few things to know before you go: --no outside food allowed, which they're pretty emphatic about --free wi-fi --there are a variety seating options, including tables, couches, arm chairs, and plenty of spots for single folks working on laptops (2 "bar" type areas with lots of outlets) --there is an area outside where you can tie up your dog, water bowls, and a jar of free dog treats inside the door - definitely a place to bring your pup! --the patio is awesome when it's nice read more

I love the sense of community at wash perk. There are often local meetings and events happening here, which really gives it a cozy feel. The drinks and food options are scrumptious. I usually drive past 2 or 3 other coffee shops to get to the Perk because of the great atmosphere. If you want to meet a friend for a cup of coffee, read, hang out with your pup, or do anything *not* requiring internet, the Perk is the best place around. This being said, I'm sad to say I've given up on the place. I go to coffee shops to study, which usually involves needing the internet for research. Unfortunately, their wifi is consistently inconsistent. The frustration and hassle of constantly being kicked off the internet just isn't worth the great coffee and ambiance. Probably one of my favorite non-pretentious coffee shops in the area. It's a twinge of hippy chic, yuppie, old money and millennial love up in this place and just an all around great coffee shop. I usually stop here before heading to Wash Park to work out (they have a bathroom and tons of parking on the side streets) and whatever I get is always delicious and exactly what I was expecting. This last time around I had the honey cinnamon latte and it was pure perfection, this place is solid and consistent if you're looking for beverages made with care. read more

I love this place! Great coffee, great service, wonderful atmosphere! Their location is perfect, too. It's just a few blocks from wash park on Ohio. They are incredibly dog friendly as well. I love that they have lots of unique coffee mugs that you can use if you stay there to enjoy your coffee. They are very earth friendly, not only with the reusable coffee mugs, but also with their waste disposal. They have a bin for waste, one for recyclables and one for compost materials. Brilliant! Even vampires like coffee! Good drinks, and snacky-type foods. Service was quirky (see below), yet fast and prices were reasonable. Interesting little Gothic Barista who was working the morning I swung in. She was full of dirty looks and eye rolls for the customers. Also, she was largely indifferent to the idea of small talk while helping the clientele. I don't need to be spoken to...but it is a nicety. Me: "Good morning, how are you?" Her: -Scowl- "What do you want?" Me: Expecting her to turn into a bat, and fly back to her coffin. " A medium latte please." Her: "Fine". -End of conversation- I noticed she was featured front and center in a larger picture of employees of the coffee house, which makes me think she is either a long time employee, or friend of the camera person. My conclusion after getting an eye roll, exasperated sigh, and a latte: She must of been tired from the previous night of drinking blood and stealing the souls of the innocent. But, honestly, we all have long nights from time to time. This is why there is coffee! In retrospect, I should of offered to buy her a cup! Update: Sadly, I have to say I'm not a fan. I tried other drinks but didn't like those either. The iced coffee was super watered down and had barely any flavor. I want to like Wash Perk because it's a local business, the service is great, the atmosphere is cute and the staff have always been amazingly friendly. I have always felt so welcome going there. The coffee is just not good. I've only been here twice so far but it's such a cute and cozy coffee shop! I love the atmosphere. It's very welcoming and the staff have all been super friendly. I've ordered flavored lattes both times and was actually kind of disappointed. I couldn't taste the flavor or the espresso. The lattes tasted like warmed up milk. Went on a sunny Sunday morning and left with a warm fuzzy feeling all over. The place is reminscent of a movie set coffee shop on the inside; well thought-out and strategically placed decor, humble and smiling patrons, delicious odors wafting in the air and, best of all, something seemed to be missing.. what was it.. oh... can't quite put my finger on it, oh yes, pretentiousness!! I loved this coffee shop. It was a perfect location for our book club to meet! The barista made a PERFECT double espresso macchiato. The foam was well-crafted. I also enjoyed an orange scone with my drink. I wish I would have taken note of the bakery - the scone was very fresh and delicious. The staff were very nice and the overall "feel" of the cafe was inviting and fun. We enjoyed the patio. We will definitely be enjoying another book club at this neighborhood meeting place! Just so I'm clear, the name of this place IS supposed to be an homage to that other "Perk," right? The famous one in New York that closed down circa 2004? It may as well be, judging from the popularity of it. I thought it was crazy busy on a Sunday morning (expected), but a friend of mine who lives nearby informed me that it's just as busy on most of the weekday evenings, too. I only ordered a vanilla latte (because apparently I am doing this subconscious comparison of all of the vanilla lattes ever created in the history of the world; see also: unoriginal oaf), and didn't have to wait too long even with a line almost to the door. The coffee tasted fine to me; sort of a down-the-middle-no-complaints cup, which is a skill you can brag about if you want, Perk. I did not try their breakfast burritos (I had to shake off temptation because I literally had two other breakfast burritos in as many days), but they were selling like, uh, hot cakes that taste like breakfast burritos? Anyways. Space-wise (and big-groups-wise) I would recommend the Perk. It seems like a hangout for cool kids just as much as a workspace. But for a quick in-and-out coffee (or private study session/reading marathons) I might choose La Belle Rosette just around the corner and down the street. Both places are very good, though; it's just a matter of preference or, you know, breaking up the routine*. Centr- er, Wash Perk gives you 10¢ off if you bring in your hot-koozie (there's a name for that and I'm just too dumb to know it, right?) from previous visits. Also, even though they DO show considerable appreciation to people paying with small change ($1 bills in particular) when they are dangerously close to running out on a Sunday morning, they do NOT give discounts for it. I'm a sucker for considerable appreciation, though. I hate to give this place only 3 starts, but I have to. First the positive: The place has a good vibe, good music playing and it's not too loud. Inside has a kind of whimsical feel and the outside seating is great. It's on a side street so there aren't a lot of cars and trucks driving by. The coffee is good (to me, but I'm a coffee amateur) and they have wireless internet, as all coffee shops do. So it should be a good place to go chill and work or study or whatever. But... My complaints are that it's overpriced and the wireless is unreliable at best. Considering that was the primary reason for my visit, I found this very disconcerting. I kept getting kicked off the network and it ran slow frequently. The caffiene turbo boost I experienced didn't help matters any. There is a note by the register that says they are working on it and looking into a different router, etc, but until it's fixed, the rating stays. Also, I paid almost $5 for a small iced mocha. Considering I can go a mile up Broadway and find cheaper coffee and better wifi, I gotta go with the 3 stars. read more

Ok, I read the Yelp reviews before heading to Wash Perk. I was looking for a quiet place, and this is not it. It was super crowded on a Friday morning, with lots of moms, their young loud children, diaper bags and strollers all over the shop. It wasn't even that cool, and I was hoping that, not having air conditioning at my house, that I'd be in a chillier shop. I found a bar chair in the back next to the wall, but I'm only 5'2" and bar stool heights are not comfortable for me, especially when I'm trying to work on my laptop. Unfortunately, I believed the Yelp reviews and hadn't left myself enough time to head out to another location with wi-fi before my WebEx started. I did get a cinnamon roll and had to ask the cashier for the internet password--it's not just wi-fi that you can access on your own since they protect it. Another reviewer shares my sentiments about the many signs around the place that tell you how outside food and drink and people who are not paying customers are not welcome--it seems unfriendly and a bit ridiculous to have so many of these signs. First, things I love: cozy atmosphere, lots of seating, free wifi, ample parking. Good coffee and a good size menu. Second, things I don't love: definitely over-priced. And you never know if the baristas are going to be in good moods that day. Sometimes they are super friendly and enjoyable to talk to. I absolutely adore this place. Besides having awesome coffee drinks (try the lavender marshmallow, or the cinnamon honey latte) it truly feels like the center of the neighborhood. There are always posters and flyers of upcoming events (that I actually want to go to) on the counter and windows, and I have yet to have a bad experience here. I come all the time to post up and get some work done inside, and I always have easy access to an outlet for my computer. Wash Perk is my go-to local coffee shop. They have such a community-atmosphere, where you always see familiar faces and don't hesitate to share a table with someone. They support local artists with their wall decor, and do great environmental things like using noodles for stir sticks and having half-flush toilets. Staff are always friendly and willing to chat. Their drinks are pretty good, though I really wish they'd have blended drinks during the summer! Good pastries and frozen burritos too, for when you get hungry during those long work/study sessions. One drawback is their hours - I wish they were open later, as I often want a late-night escape to get some reading or work in. They also have occasional problems with slow internet... Overall, however, this is one of my favorite coffee shops in the area, and an example of a fantastic community-centered business! read more

We have Wash Perk, Europa, and Starbucks within walking distance of our house. Because I'd rather keep my money local, I huff it past the green mermaid and go an extra mile down the road to Wash Perk. The staff is friendlier than Europa (by far) and the prices are reasonable. The only drawback? It's always--truly always--so packed with computer-connected campers that to date I haven't been able to find a seat, and apparently asking to share a table is taboo. Imagine if Phoebe from Friends lives in Denver, this would be the coffee shop where she'd hang out and sings Smelly Cat. In other words, this place is fun, eclectic and colorful. Love the mismatched chairs and tables! The cafe also separated into two areas: one with big tables and outlets for people to camp out with their laptops,and the other side with comfy couches and coffee tables for reading and chillaxing. The last time I went I got their pumpkin bread ( super moist and delicious!) and their Italian soda. My first thought upon hearing about Wash perk was "What a clever name for a coffee shop!" But then I thought of Ross, Rachel, and all of those other Friends hanging out at Central Perk, and they lost a few creativity points. What they lack in creativity, they completely make up in atmosphere and quality of coffee. This is one of those places where I just want to cozy up in a chair and sit with a book all day. When I order a mocha here, it actually still tastes like coffee, unlike one large chain that serves a mocha reminiscent of burnt chocolate. Wash Perk is a great neighborhood coffee and tea shop. On my first time in I was served by one of the owners - she told me her vision was not just to create a shop but a community space and they have done just that. It's a very relaxed atmosphere and tucked just blocks away from Wash Park. The tea I've had there has been very good and they carry a variety of baked goods and snacks - including vegan pastries and treats from the Watercourse Bakery! Free internet, comfortable seating, bright shop with lots of windows, patio area, nice neighborhood, very friendly staff (not pretentious in the least). I only wish it were a bit larger! read more
