My first Door County experience included driving up the peninsula to the car ferry (with a couple of stops on the way), and onto Washington Island for a weekend of camping and sightseeing. I believe Washington Island Campground is THE ONLY camping on the island. The island has an "old timey" feel to it where everyone waves as you drive by and is very kind to tourists from what we experienced. As one lady we spoke to put it "They are so nice it's almost creepy". But onto the campground itself...it's not right there once you get off the ferry, maybe a couple of miles away. Fairly easy to find if you use the map they provide at the ferry station. I have not been to a campground in a long time but this one seemed fairly comparable to most I've been to. They have RV/trailer camping, horse camping, tent (electric or non) and cute little cabins you can rent. The grounds have a main office that sells wood for $6 a bunch (tip: you can probably name your own price if you buy more than one) and other small items but it's not a huge selection or anything. Besides, you're camping right?! They also have an inside lounge type area with a TV, pinball and other games, a pool table and an ATM. This would be good if you were waiting for someone to shower or it ended up raining, but we never had a use for it. Onto the showers...they are pretty clean and they are the type where you pop in a quarter and 6ish minutes later you have to add it again. BUT... you do get the quarter back so it's a free shower. The showers and flush able toilets are connected to the main building, but there is one other set of pit toilets on the other side of the grounds. If you have a site further away you may want to drive if you need the flushing toilets. The campsites were okay, some are better than others. We camped in the non-electric tent side and because it was before the busy time hits on July 4th we had pick of the sites which was cool. We were literally the only ones there for two nights, aside from random RVs and horse campers. And please note, sites near the horses can hear the horses in the morning hours lol. Site #20 is a popular one and would be good for two tents and cars, but it had less grass than we wanted. Bug wise we had no ticks and we didn't really have an issue in late June with mosquitos or anything else. We saw lots of interesting bugs/wildlife on the island such as a tree frog that sat on our chair for two hours near the fire, a lot of tadpoles in the campground man-made pond, a snake in the road and bald eagles. Just a really nice weekend overall. I would camp here again for sure, but would also consider renting one of the cabins. Our only true complaint was this: the people who run the office are very nice and were very accommodating. However, they keep their dog tied up 24 hours a day outside of the office and that just bothers me a lot. One of the times we had to give him water because he was out and no one was around. I feel like he is a bit neglected being tied to a 5' rope all of time and that alone might prevent me from camping there again. I should also mention, they have their own black horse on the property with an electric fence around it. I guess most people know what an electric fence looks like (including my boyfriend who accidentally touched it and got shocked but was ok after his bad headache passed) but I think they need to have a sign on it so small children and those who do not know are warned. Beautiful location, clean bathrooms, reasonable price. I was camping out solo and it was late September. There were not a lot of people camping. The campground was clean and many of the lots felt very secluded. Number 20 and number 19 seem to be popular. The campgrounds are forestry and beautiful. The family running the place was very nice and were happy to accommodate me and let me choose any spot that was available. I felt completely safe. If I ever happen to be in the area again, I would definitely stay there. This is the only campground in the Washington Island. It is very close to the small downtown area and anything can be reached on the island within 20 minutes of driving. Ferries were going hourly when I was there. Times may change during different seasons. read more

This is a great place to stay on island if you love camping! The prices are very reasonable and the amenities are great! The showers are clean and spacious. They offer complimentary coffee and wifi! They have a swimming pond surrounded by sand making a nice little beach, a playground, basketball hoop, volleyball net and mini golf. The camp sites are very well maintained, surrounded by trees, have a nice picnic table and fire ring. The staff were very helpful and personable with plenty of maps of the island, suggestions of what to do and directions. We would definitely love to come back here again! read more

This is an good place, but with a couple issues. We stopped by here in the fall towards the end of the season (October) on the last weekend of the tourist season on the island. I had two boys with me, (and a dog) and we were just staying the night before continuing onwards to Rock Island. The campground was sparsely populated, probably less than a dozen occupied sites scattered about the 100+ site campground. First of all, the infrastructure here is top notch. They can accommodate almost all types if camping: tent camping, RV's, people renting sleeping cabins, people renting RV's, even people bringing horses. There seems to be plenty of activities available in the summer season, but irrelevant for our one-night middle-of-autumn visit. Tent sites have some distance between them, so the sites are spaced out a bit, which is nice. However, the execution was lacking. We arrived late, and decided to take a sleeping cabin so we wouldn't have to setup a tent in the dark. The first thing we had to do was spend half an hour cleaning the cabin of the previous occupant's garbage, as well as sweep up grit, dirt and dead flies that were everywhere. Secondly, as another reviewer (from 2013) mentioned, the bathrooms weren't that clean. Dead bugs, broken plumbing fixtures, just sort of unappealing. I can understand that in the middle of summer, on a busy weekend, housekeeping can be a challenge, but at the tail end of the season with a minimal number of guests, the bathroom should have been spotless, and relatively easy to keep that way with just a few minutes of work each day. Also, when we're spending $70 per night for a cabin, it should be clean when we walk in the door. In hindsight, we probably could've gotten a nicer, cheaper, cleaner motel room elsewhere. I encourage the owners, who did a great job building up this property, not to coast along on being the only campground on the island, but to really recommit to improving customer service, especially housekeeping. Better-lit road signage, better off-season rates, better social media presence, all needed. A perfect example of why competition for camping on Washington Island would be a good thing. read more

Great campground! Campsites are very large and separated from each other. They're also a variety of different cabins on premises. There's a large swimming tomorrow and that kids can plan with big inflatable slide and jungle gym and also minigolf that is free for campers. This was a very quiet and quaint location. There were probably about a dozen families/couples there at any given time when we were there in Aug so it's great if you're looking for quiet time. I love that they have a bunch of board games, mini golf, pool table, and sports equipment for guests to use at their leisure and whenever they want. This was especially nice considering the island has virtually nothing to offer tourists! An island with no public beaches-such a tragedy (their one "sand dunes beach" is not a beach, but a grassy marsh with some sand leading up to tall grass, to mud, then finally water). They have a sweet, large flat screen TV in a lounge space with directv...but since you're out camping, this will hopefully not tempt you away from the great outdoors ;) I thought the tent sites were mostly great in that they have trees between each site, perfect for some privacy between the sites. The downside was that they filled the sites with a bunch of gravel, so trying to hammer in pegs was difficult. We bent 4 metal pegs after moving the pegs around all over in an effort to find ground in which to anchor the tent! You definitely need an air mattress to sleep on! The restrooms were kinda gross and considering they weren't very busy, I would've hoped that they could pay more attention to cleaning it. Waste was overflowing from bins, paper towels and toilet paper were out for half a day until I told the front desk, and there was a lot if grime everywhere. I don't think they checked the restrooms but once a day, if that. They only came to collect trash from the sites about every other day, too. This place has a lot of potential, but it seems like they only give half an effort at maintaining and running it. Kids playset was broken (part of the rail on one side fell off-dangerous!!), old kiddie toys laying around (kids enjoy, but would look less like junk littering the grounds if they placed strategically, fenced in or something), trash overflowing from bins for the 5 days we were there, and a decrepit mini golf pond with trash and weeds, to name a few things that could easily be addressed with a few hours of attention. They had a number of what I'm assuming are local teens running around the place, so my inner management side was screaming to put them to work and clean up the place ;P read more

Many of the negative reviews were from several years ago, so take them with a grain of salt. Things have changed and we found the campground a step above any we have stayed at. The newly married owners, Mike and Kayla, were so accommodating and went above and beyond to try to help us have a good time. They provided lots of tips as to places to see and eat at. They knew the Island very well! Great swimming pond for the kids, which was a bit warmer than the lake, but still cold in June. They will be putting in a giant inflatable slide when it warms up a bit more. There's a magnificent log table in the lodge (handmade by Mike) with a closet full of games for rainy days. The bathrooms are old, but very clean as I saw Kayla scrubbing the floors with soap and bleach. (The floors are just permanently discolored, and they are hoping to replace them soon.)The showers are a bit old-fashioned and take a quarter to activate - but you get the quarter back! The lodge is open 24 hours. They also have laundry facilities there, and wi-fi to enjoy when you're waiting for the laundry to be done. They are in the process of replacing all the old picnic tables and are going to try to get the mini-golf redone this summer. We had one of the new tables and they are very substantial!! Overall, we had a great experience and will definitely be back again this summer! This is a campground ran by a wonderful family. They always accommodate my fiancé and I when we return every year. Keep in mind when reading these reviews that YOU ARE CAMPING. IN THE WOODS. ON AN ISLAND. Yes there will be bugs. Locker room showers. Cabins with dirt. YOU'RE CAMPING. Enjoy the beauty your surrounded by and let expectations and normalcy melt away. We have camped here for a long time. We love it. We even have traditions that we do every time we go. We've have even been here when its rained, and they have a nice gathering room if you need to get out of the rain. Showers and restrooms are clean and well maintained. Campsites are clean, and they're not right next to each other. The owners are great. We love the island! read more

My fiance and I camped in a cabin here last summer and had a terrific experience. The owners were very personable and allowed you into their campground like you were apart of the family! The showers and bathrooms were very clean, the cabins were well-maintained and roomy, and the land was lush and green! The only downfall would be all of the insects--but that is nature's fault, not theirs :) If you are afraid of spiders, a camping trip on Washington Island may not be for you! read more

A few years ago I would have given this campground 5 stars and rave reviews. This campground use to be fabulous. Clean & well kept. Not anymore. Under new ownership it has a new swimming pond which is nice and a few more new cabins but the lodge, bathrooms and most of the sites are in disarray. The lodge/camp store is so unorganized and dirty. The bathrooms did not seem to be cleaned daily. The sites were not cleared of debris from the previous season. We use to come here often but will not be making the trip here again to camp. DON'T RENT A CAMP TRAILER. One of our friends rented one and it was a disaster. Unkept to say the least. Holes in screens, toilets not working, air conditioning broken & uneven warped floors. What a mess. They need to be removed from the property. We checked the other trailers that are available to rent but they were no better. All in all, we are saddened by the campground. We will visit again to see if it has changed but won't be back to camp unless it changes. We camped in July-August 2012. If you want to salmon/trout fish the new camp owner is rumored to be one of the best fisherman on the island. We saw a family come back from fishing with him and he had several large salmon he was filleting in the fish house. We will definitely give that a try on our next trip. read more
