I verified with my orthopedist's office that the images would be clear enough. My MRI technician was brusque but professional. She offered me a blanket since I might find myself chilly laying still for so long. The MRI process itself was a breeze; the tech came on over a loudspeaker to inform me how many minutes each scan would take. I was finished in just over an hour. Bonus: Since we were only taking images of my knee, I was able to wear my own dress for the MRI process. Hurray for not having to wear an awkward hospital gown. My MRI was done on a Friday afternoon and I went home with a CD of images. My doctor had the report on Monday morning and I was able to meet with him to discuss the results on Monday afternoon. Billing was uneventful and they were able to successfully work with my insurance (UnitedHealthcare).

They jacked me around for literally months and months this year -- not returning calls, canceling appointments when I got them, rescheduling them, saying they needed to get my insurance checked out, then finally waiting until hours before the appointment to let me know they wouldn't take my insurance. First red flag: I had to fill out ALL the paperwork again because the forms I'd already submitted online never made it to the office. When I brought this up, the receptionist actually said, "I wish they would stop doing that, we don't get those forms!" Excuse me?? This is apparently a known, ongoing problem and nobody has bothered to fix it? Then there's the website itself, the instructions on Washington Radiology's site were either wrong or so vague they were useless, to the point that the tech herself disagreed with them. The site clearly states: "Do not eat or drink two hours before your exam." So when the tech couldn't find a vein for the contrast, she rudely demanded to know when I'd last had something to drink, as if I were the problem, when I was literally following the instructions on their own website. Her first attempt, on my left arm, failed, and her immediate instinct was to blame me instead of her technique. I asked her to try my other arm, since that's where other techs have always had success and she completely ignored me and went right back to jabbing at the same arm again. Nothing about her performance that entire visit inspired one ounce of confidence that she knew what she was doing. Another red flag: the tech asked me about the composition of surgical staples in my body and when I said I didn't know, she had nothing to say. No follow-up, no explanation. If that information mattered, I should have been told to find it out before the appointment. So which is it, does it matter or doesn't it? Because if it doesn't, why was I even asked? After these interactions with the tech, I'd had enough and left without completing the exam. An MRI is not a routine, trivial procedure, it requires a technician I can trust knows what they're doing. Between her inability to place the IV correctly, her refusal to even try my other arm as I requested, and her lack of any clear answers when questioned, I had zero confidence in her competence. Add to that her consistently rude and dismissive manner, and I simply couldn't in good conscience continue with the exam. Given that Washington Radiology is associated with this location, I assumed it would be a more professionally run office! Guess not! Save yourself the inconvenience and schedule someplace else!

I came to see Dr. Marshall because my dad passed away suddenly in November at the age of 60 when his heart stopped for unexplained reasons. I had developed a heart murmur and skipped beats in the past few years and wanted to get checked out. Dr. Marshall ordered a heart monitor and echo imaging, and then called me with the results. He told me my heart was adding an extra beat every 100 beats on average and that I had some valve leakage. I'm not a doctor and didn't understand the significance of this so wanted to ask a few questions. Everything I asked he responded to with utter distain, and constantly tried to get off the phone. "Does that mean my heart skips a beat about every minute or two?" "No, do you not understand averages? On AVERAGE means not every 100 beats. I'm not going to sit here on the phone and explain math to you." "It was bothering me when I was exercising--does the monitor show anything there?" "No, that's just what it feels like to have your heart elevated when you exercise." (I'm 30 years old, 130 pounds, and a former D1 runner. I have no idea why he'd think I don't know what it means to exercise.) "I understand you are saying this isn't a problem but might it become a problem over time?" "It is not a problem and won't be a problem. You need to GET OVER IT AND MOVE ON WITH YOUR LIFE." "I can tell you are frustrated with my questions. I'm really not trying to hold you hostage here--we've been on the phone for less than 10 minutes--I just want to understand what's happening with my body." "WOW. Do you understand that I am a busy CARDIOLOGIST with a million more important things to do?? 10 minutes is a VERY long time for me." "Ok, would you please just send me what we talked about so I have a record of it?" "I'll have my assistant send the tests but no, I'm not going to do a PhD thesis on your symptoms." We talked for a total of 13 minutes, the majority of which he spent berating me. I feel no closer to understanding what is happening with my body. Also, I will add that when I first came in I brought my husband with me, and Dr. Marshall was relatively polite. When it was just me though -a woman half his age - his demeanor changed completely. Correlation isn't causation, but it is worth noting.

The location was also very convenient for me. I was able to schedule an appointment within a few days. Parking: there's a paid parking, but there is also a lot of street parking. Appointment: They seemed very organized and on schedule....or I might have just scheduled my appointment when the office was slow. The receptionist was really nice and a pro at multi-tasking. I was impressed. The doctor I met with was really nice and friendly. They had prepared a folder with information for the country I was going to, and she walked me through all of the vaccines, pills, etc. out there and answered all of my questions...even twice, since I'm terrible at medical terminology. She didn't push any vaccines or pills on me, and she was very open with the pricing and her experience with trying to get my insurance to cover some of the shots. I highly recommend this place to others, and I'd go back....after 10 years when these vaccines start to wear off! =)

I struggled with another cardiologist who did tests and did not send the results to my doctor and would not return my calls. NOT COOL! My functional medical doctor in Chevy Chase recommended Dr. Rubin who was in the same building as her practice. Dr. Rubin did a full exam and ascertained why my original medication had stopped working, which was giving me pounding in my chest. Dr. Rubin, being the wizard that he was, pinned down why the old medication was performing the way that it was and added an additional medication. We had to experiment with a few medications and came up with one that did not give me bad side effects, and I have been taking both medications for a number of years. These are older medications which cost $5 per 90-day supply, not hundreds of dollars which I had been paying for the medication from my PCP. Recently, I started having side effects from the 2nd medication and left a message for Dr. Rubin. I couldn't believe it when he called me a few hours later while on vacation on France! WHO DOES THAT??? DR. RUBIN DOES!!! He took me off of the medication on a test basis and I will be in touch with him in two weeks. Dr. Rubin had been a PCP and treats the entire person using a wide range of skills to treat a patient. If you are looking for the best cardiologist in Maryland, give Dr. Rubin a call! NOTE: In response to patients who were upset about Dr. Rubin not taking your insurance, he only accepts Medicare. If you have other insurance, he only charges $100 . . . they work with you and charge a small fee for life saving care. Do not avoid due to a small bill for treatment . . . his care is worth the price, given that other doctors who may accept your insurance, did me so much harm! would rather be healthy than worry about a small insurance bill. The web site even lists a different physician as someone who does not take all insurance with no mention of Dr. Rubin who it turns out does not take any private insurance. Lastly, there was no mention that he did not take my insurance when I made an appointment or when I checked in at the office and they took my copay.
