This place is the worst. After having a nightmare experience with them several years ago - driven at least partly by the fact that there are no phone communications between provider and patients, only unending loops of automated texts or one-way forms - I tried going back after getting dozens of reminders from them to schedule my annual mammogram. I let the scheduler know that I was between primary care doctors (my previous doctor left her practice) and she said that was fine, but after sitting for half an hour in a packed waiting room I was told by the front desk that it's illegal for them to give me a mammogram if I don't have a primary care doc for them to send it to. I personally think this is stupid, but if this is their policy why was I even given an appointment? Please find another location, I've had a good experience with their Germantown office. read more

Staff was attentive and friendly. It was during the holidays and they had a bra decorating contest for their staff where we could vote for our favorite. (The decorated bras were hanging in the changing room.) It was nice having something to "brighten" the mood and the experience. read more

I used to think this was absolutely the best place to go for imaging. I still believe that their clinical staff is outstanding. Unfortunately, the administrative side of the practice, has become terrible. They never answer the phone, I've waited on hold and then been disconnected multiple times, my results no longer ever make it to my physician or to me. I have had to drive back there to get my results in hard copy. My husband tried to schedule an MRI there and gave up and went somewhere else. I tend to be very loyal and I still think the clinical staff is top notch but administration is now terrible. Very pleasant at the front desk but the phone service and scheduling is abysmal. read more

UPDATE: I called WRA this morning and after speaking to a scheduler who told me the best she could do was an appointment in 2 months (!), I spoke to a manager who gave me a cancellation appointment 2 weeks from my original appointment. While pleased the manager accommodated me (and I immediately received a confirmation email and text), it still never should have come to this. [The scheduler I spoke with today said, "how do we know you actually made an appointment 2 and a half months ago," to which I responded, "if you record calls, you absolutely have a recording of me talking to one of your colleagues making this appointment and someone should pull that recording as proof." At that point she transferred me to her manager. I'm bumping up the rating to 2 stars to reflect the manager giving me a cancellation appointment.] Word or warning: don't assume you actually have an appointment for an MRI unless you actually receive a confirmation email. Yes, I know it sounds obvious but when they force you to speak to one of their representatives to schedule an MRI (versus making it online), it's not unreasonable to assume that person actually made a record of it. I wasted 2 and 1/2 months to get a specialized MRI only to be told the day before that they had no record of my appointment when I called to confirm. They also messed up a mammogram appointment last year but at least with that one, they were able to fit me in later that day. Just terrible service. What happened to WRA? It used to be reasonably well run. After being a client of theirs for over 15+ years, I'm going to look elsewhere and suggest you do the same. read more

Do your research before getting a mammogram, here. I went for a scheduled screening Mammogram on October 30th, the first at Washington Radiology (Chevy Chase location). It is December 1st, and I still have not gotten a proper read. I had to call a week after my mammogram for it to be put on the Radiologist's list to read, and that wasn't the first or last red flag. My mammogram results came in the mail a week later (November 13th) and it said I need more imaging. My doctor allowed me to see my report which said that I had a mass in my left breast, but they would re-read the report if old images were available. Not only have I had a mass in my left breast since 1999, but I SAW the old images at Washington Radiology in the room before I had my mammogram on October 30th. I even pointed out the marker that was in my left breast where it was biopsied in 2011. I was mad when I saw that the radiologist had not bothered to look at the old images, but now more than a month later, I am livid. I have called several times, have been promised that management would get back with, AND that the radiologist would re-read my ultrasound using the old mammogram. Today, when I saw the certified letter in the mail, I thought my stress might be alleviated, but no.....It was a letter telling me that they have made many attempts to get me to schedule more imaging based of of the initial incomplete read!! They have contacted me once only to press me to get more imaging and did not even notice the many notes about my calls saying that the mammogram was not read correctly. I have already scheduled a diagnostic mammogram at a well-rated Breast Imaging center, and will likely have to pay out of pocket, but this is beyond unacceptable. The fact that there are multiple 1-2 star rating for mammograms at Washington Radiology makes me believe that they do not care about Women's Health. Shame on you! read more

After waiting weeks to get mammogram results, I called to see what was up. Was hung up on by the system four different times before I finally went to the line for doctors in order to reach a human. Apparently they don't notify you of your results, you have to APPLY for them through a portal and wait 3-5 days. So apparently I could have had a massive tumor and no one would let me know. They gave me a 7:15 appointment (and told me to be 15 min early) when the doors don't even open until 7:30. I saw the technician who performed my scan arrive at 7:40 and I was taken back at 7:45. So they never had the ability or intention to honor my appointment time. Otherwise seemed fine, but that is just unacceptable in my opinion. read more

These people are incompetent. They do not send the images your doctor, just a summary report. They never mention that when you are there. Then you have to request your records. No acknowledgement is provided. They just say wait 7-10 days. Then the records never come. They do not answer the phone to follow up. They just say send another request. Meanwhile, your medical condition cannot be treated. Extremely unprofessional and unhelpful. They do not care one bit. read more

The more recent reviews are more negative so perhaps something has changed at WR. My experience was terrible but the treatment of others that I observed was even worse. The "receptionists" never looked up from their screens when patients walked in the door and just pushed a clipboard across the counter. I watched the "receptionists" be impatient and borderline rude in response to an elderly woman who was hard of hearing and asked the "receptionists" to repeat what they had said. Perhaps the "receptionists" are asked to do so much data entry that they have no time to be kind. Or even polite. My first appointment was also my first mammogram but the technician said nothing to me about the process. She was clearly in a hurry and got irritated when I took a breath during the exam. She didn't tell me not to breathe. The mammogram revealed a mass so I came back for a sonogram. The sonogram doctor and technician were nice enough and told me to come back in six months. At my six-month appointment, the "receptionists" were just as unpleasant as before. My technician was clearly having a bad day - she was just dismissive and uncommunicative at first and then was bullying, insisted my appointment was for a different test from what the doctor had said, and finally was so angry and rude that I just left. It's great to have choice and be able to vote with your feet when a business does a bad job but now WR is sitting on my records so I can't schedule an appointment somewhere else. Their website says they will produce the records I need in 3-5 business days but I'm still waiting on Day 8 - after sending two follow-up emails asking for the status of my request. I am picking them up in person so all they have to do is make some paper copies and burn a CD. Their voice menu system is set up so you can't reach a live person and it directs you to the website. I had to cancel my appointment with another provider because WR still hasn't provided my records. I have no idea when I'll be able to follow up on the mass in my breast because WR is sitting on my records. read more

My first horrific experience with this place was actually a few years ago. I was referred by my gynecologist for an ultrasound, and the male doctor was cold, curt, and finished our short appointment by throwing open the door while I was still naked/spread eagle on the table. I literally made eye contact with someone passing by in the hallway before the nurse (who had the decency to look a little embarrassed for her asshole colleague) rushed to shut the door behind him. Fast forward a few years, and I'm back at Washington Radiology for a mammogram appointment. It was stupid of me to come back here, but for some reason this seems to be the only game in town. Which is a bummer, because everything about this place is aggressively designed to make patients feel the opposite of comfortable. The receptionist's greeting is neutral-to-cold, the first chair I choose is missing all its springs, and the TV channel is set to a an all-male 70's show about firefighters. Nothing as offensive as what happened my first time around, but still feels unnecessarily agitating for a waiting room full of mostly women waiting for a test that will tell them if they have cancer. Here are my first three suggestions: reward your staff for being kind; swap out the broken chairs; change the channel to Bravo (or anything with a little levity). The aggressively uncomfortable vibe continues as I'm led from the waiting room to the changing room, a process that gives off icky, factory vibes ("take your shirt off, put this robe on, someone will call you shortly," barks my unsmiling sherpa). As I wait, half-naked and chilled, behind my curtain, I hear the patient next door deep breathing like her life depends on it. It occurs to me (not for the first time) that some, maybe many, of the patients in this place have already had cancer or have a family history of it, and this appointment is fucking terrifying for them. I wonder if this woman's technician will actually show her compassion. Here are two more suggestions: bump the thermostat in the changing area; train your staff to spot scared patients who need a little extra care and comfort. A technician calls my name, and I follow her to the coldest room yet - the one where I'll disrobe ("take your sleeve off, take your sleeve off -- no, take it off!") and let this woman I met 13 seconds ago, whose name I don't know, man-handle my tiny, uncooperative boobs into a foreboding machine. I can't stop thinking about the woman having the panic attack and the fact that they keep this room so cold. Here is another suggestion: a space heater would be a kind, easy touch, or if that's too fire hazard-y, maybe turn up the heat? Just in this one room, where women are scared and naked and getting their sensitive tissue grabbed by a stranger and painfully squished by a machine ("hold your breath!"), a little warmth would go a long way. A few minutes later, my technician dispatches me back to the changing room and I'm re-dressing as fast as my chilled fingers will go. The panic attack woman is gone; I say a quick prayer that her appointment went well and she doesn't have to come back here for another year. Or, better yet, that another imaging business opens up before then, so none of us ever have to come back here again. Here's my final recommendation, and this one is for the owner or the board or the managers of this business (whomever or whatever is in charge): Pretend you are the patient. Go through this experience. Be honest with yourselves -- what would you change? read more

I was a bit worried going into this procedure, as the information I was going to receive could be good or bad. But, from the moment I arrived, everyone was so warm and comforting. The nurses and attendants were lovely and reassuring. Then, the Ultrasound Doctor- Dr. Holland- I cannot rave enough about! She was so caring and compassionate and even fun! She showed me everything she found and explained it so that I could understand. She described possible next steps and just made me feel like I was talking to a close, caring friend. Thank you! Sneaky. My doc recommended a test to be done at WR. A test covered by my insurance. WR didn't bother to get a preauthorization, which is their requirement with my insurance, united hc. However they slipped in a waiver in the prep documents. In effect allowing them to bill me directly after not bothering with their contractual requirements. So don't sign that waiver read more

The quality of the care was excellent, both doctors and techs. But it was two months from the first scan until I was called with benign results on a biopsy: almost a month's wait between first scan and second one, same for biopsy. Seems to me that it was way too long to make patients put their lives on hold. read more

I appreciated that the front desk staff and technicians are friendly and efficient. Virtually no waiting time, which is much appreciated. Unfortunately, the radiologist(s) are less efficient. For the second time in two weeks, my referring physician has failed to get the report in a timely fashion. Each time, when I called, WRA advised me that the reports are usually done more quickly, but the radiologist was "behind". We still do not have the report of my exam 3 days ago, and I've got a follow-up appointment tomorrow. I now understand why my docs recommended two different radiology practices but not this one. Quite possible the worst experience I've had at a medical facility, and that is saying something. I did not bring my doctor's order as I had forgotten to bring it to work with me that morning. I called them in advance and I was told they could look it up since they work with my doctor's office. They called my doctor's office and said they sent over the order. Long story short, they did the incorrect test. When I called to vocalize my concern to the billing department about paying for the wrong imaging test, my return phone message was a lengthy voicemail from Maria at their office who said it was my responsibility to bring the doctor's order (ok fair), but then went on to say I was late for the appointment (I was actually early), as if it was justification for them to still charge me for an erroneous test. Completely unprofessional, disorganized, and rude staff. read more

The machines for mammogram are not comfortable or designed for women. They should explain that if you get a diagnostic exam then it is not covered by the insurance. The nurses are good but they should have female doctors to do breast exams. It's very uncomfortable to be examined by a male doctor. read more

Very poor patient service that resulted in a significant delay for my diagnostic test with zero apologies or any attempt to take responsibility for the delay in my care. My doctor referred me here for a time-sensitive diagnostic test. I called to schedule the exam, and received an appointment for the following week. As I am getting ready to go, WRA calls me to state that I was incorrectly scheduled and that they "don't do" the exam I was referred for at the Chevy Chase office, which I was scheduled for. I ask to be rescheduled at a location that does the procedure. They put me on hold for a few minutes, and then claim that their other location doesn't do the procedure either. When I pointed out that the exam, which I understand is fairly common, is specifically advertised on WRA's website, I inexplicably get transferred to the billing office of another location, and am eventually told through another round of phone tag that WRA has stopped doing this procedure due to COVID. I have to go back to my doctor, get another referral for another practice, and now can't get an appointment for another month. read more

This facility is not the best place to have an MRI. They don't have friction socks so when you're going in and out of the MRI room, you soil your own socks and might slip on the floor. The technician didn't help me get in or out of the machine, even though I have back pain. The cushions were worn and ripped. The earplugs they provided were poor, my ears are still ringing a couple of days later Their Philips machine is 12 years old. The discs they burn don't have a label. When I had an MRI at Sibley Hospital, the label with the date and type of exam was printed right on the disc. I don't know the quality of the report because I haven't seen it yet. There are a lot of other places nearby to get an MRI so I think you would do better someplace else. read more

The rudest, coldest, most least empathetic place and staff I have ever witnessed. And I've witnessed a lot in the health world. This is a place where mostly women go to deal with injury and illness and the staff -at least on the mammogram side -are awful. Front desk and nurses. Not Only would I avoid this place at all costs, most everyone that works there should find a career we're being a cold rude and dismissive person is a requirement and they get bonuses for making customers feel awful. They would all get promoted. Disgusting behavior. One day they'll have a health challenge and maybe they'll see how it feels. Apparently k street location is better. read more

These are truly some of the rudest people I've ever encountered- it's really shocking. My doctor ordered an imaging test, as I tried to schedule the test, they are not allowed to tell me what prep or anything about the procedure until AFTER you schedule it, which makes ZERO sense. If this is a test that requires fasting, then you should know that before you schedule so you can plan appropriately. So after I schedule it, I'm told I must drink a solution prior to the test, I ask how far in advance if the test do I need to drink this, they will not tell me. They say I must drive 3 hours round trip to the facility to pick up the instructions and the solution prior to scheduled test and pay $20 parking to pick it up because they will not mail or email the instructions and they will not send the prescription for solution to pharmacy. I'm disabled with multiple compiling medical issues and I find this kind of treatment to be completely insensitive and it's a medical institution. read more

The staff at this location is amazing. They have the kindest and most caring staff greeting the patients, conducting tests, reading and discussing the results and managing the place. I've been coming here for my annual mammograms and they have never missed a best. I especially appreciated the kind and caring mannerisms of their staff when I had to have a biopsy (negative, thank God) last year. This will always be my first choice to have this test performed. read more

Great location, easy access to Metro train at Friendship Heights. Multiple good places around for lunch after you are done with the test. I truly recommend it. read more

I don't agree with the negative reviews. I had an MRI recently at WRA. They were very professional, did not keep me waiting, and the radiologist was very comforting, asking me regurlarly if I was okay. Overall the experience was positive. Having an MRI is unnerving but I would say that they did all they could to comfort me. read more

To me, there's only one thing that really matters when going in for a CT scan (x-ray, MRI, or other non-interactive procedure) - timeliness. Obviously, competency and care matter as well; but, if you are not doing that well, you don't deserve to be in business to begin with. Sadly, that puts most medical service providers on the street as 99% of them suck when it comes to respecting your time. WRA was spot on. Got there when I was supposed to. Light registration paperwork load. Went back EARLY and was out within 20 minutes of my appointment time. Freak'n beautiful. The rest of the medical service providers of the world take note, it is actually possible to do this for people. read more

Chances are, if you're headed to the radiologist, you're a bit nervous (or full fledged panicked, as I was). So my review is here to say: rest assured. Washington Radiology is super-professional and super-friendly; my appointment was at 3pm and I was in the radiologist's office by 3:05 (which was a real blessing since my appointment required me to drink 32 ounces of water and I felt like I was going to burst). The entire appointment literally took 20 minutes - the radiologist was thorough, friendly, and very patient about explaining everything. If you have to take off your clothes, put on a flimsy gown, and get some part of your insides scanned, probed, or x-rayed, this is the place to do it. The only downside is that calling to make an appointment can be a pain - shortcut: log into their website, leave your phone number and the time you can be reached, and Washington Radiology will call you the next day to make an appointment. It beats waiting on hold for 20 minutes. read more

As with many visits to health care professionals, needing to go to a radiologist is not necessarily the most fun experience. However, the staff here is exceedingly pleasant and caring. Getting an appointment, though, was not as easy as at another radiology practice that I almost went to (but didn't due to insurance issues) -- the time between scheduling the appointment to the actual appointment was about 2 weeks. Being in Chevy Chase unfortunately means that garage parking can be expensive, so it's best to take Metro or get an early appointment and circle around in hopes of finding street parking. Bonus - This office is right across the street from the new Whole Foods! read more

Edited to add: I just received a phone call from the manager of the location, who explained that for clinical reasons they do not offer OB appointments in the early morning, and that my appointment should never have been made at that time. I still find the situation frustrating and unacceptable. They should have noticed the error much earlier, and should have informed me much earlier. I was given the managers information so that I can schedule future appointments directly, rather than going through their central scheduling office, hence the increase from my original rating. We made our appointment for our 20 week ultrasound a month in advance, scheduling personal and work obligations around it. After receiving a confirmation phone call early this morning, I received a second phone call informing me that my appointment would need to be rescheduled because the doctor "prefers not to do early morning appointments". My husband and I must now rearrange our personal and professional lives at the last minute. All I can say is that if your doctor or practitioner refers you to Washington Radiology, ask for another referral. read more

Well, my saga could probably fill about five single space pages. Overall, my experience with WRA could not have been more stressful. I was in a lot of pain with my ankle and my doctor ordered an MRI to be done quickly and recommended WRA. I tried to contact the K St. office, but as others noted, it is almost impossible to get through to the K Street office for an appointment. I left several messages and none of them were returned. I did get an appointment for a Saturday afternoon at the Chevy Chase facility which was a good forty minute drive from home. As the web site indicates they are closed on Saturdays, I tried to confirm that morning they were open and also the office building location but no one picked up and I received only a recording they weren't open. I went ahead anyway and arrived early to the appointment and they were indeed open. The receptionist could not explain why the phone did not ring on Saturdays as she could pick up if it rings. I was taken in for my MRI and as it was starting, I was informed the machine was now broken. After the technician, tried a couple of things, I was told that I wouldn't be having my MRI. I was pretty upset, understandably, since I had a pending doctor's appointment a few days later and driven far to come get it done. After getting out, I spoke to the receptionist to see where else I could go or if I could get scheduled for the following week. She did not seem to have much information about scheduling but told me they were totally booked the following week. I received no apologies of any sort and asked that the facility manager call me first thing Monday morning. The assistant facility manager called and was apologetic and indicated she would try to get me an appointment that day close to my home. A few minutes later, she called to tell me that I had an appointment at 5:45pm on K Street. I was grateful and arrived early to my appointment via ride share. As I was checking in, I was then told that the appointment was actually at the Fairfax location and they were booked and I should try to go to Fairfax. I explained I had no car with me, and even if I did in rush hour it would likely take an hour or more. I was really starting to get very upset at this point and asked they call the Chevy Chase manager about my situation. I was then told I could go to Chevy Chase and again indicated that I had no car and it was rush hour. Finally, after getting very upset and almost in tears, the manager of the K Street facility indicated they could do it late if I waited an hour and a half. I readily agreed and waited but the front office staff were quite unfriendly. Since I was told they had two machines, and another MRI was being done at the same time, I was not holding anyone up. I got the MRI and I am grateful that the K Street manager finally intervened. The technician was very sorry when he heard my saga. But overall, this was extremely stressful and when you are in a lot pain everything is worse. There were few apologies during the process. I am doing this review in hopes that someone at WRA will see it and make some changes to what appears to me to be some serious problems, including systemic and equipment issues. No one else should go through what I just experienced! read more

UPDATE: Less than 24 hours after writing my review, I got a call from them to let me know that somehow my insurance company submitted my claim under my brother's insurance (he lives in Ohio - very bizarre) so it was kicked back and will be resubmitted. I really appreciated knowing this now. Would've liked to know it when they originally found out weeks ago, but this is good enough for me. ************* Had to get an MRI back in September - not exactly the most fun experience in the universe. Making an appointment was easy enough, despite them having to reschedule once due to technical issues. I was told to arrive 45 minutes before my appointment, which I did. The reception area was somewhat sterile and the receptionists were manning about 45 phone calls at once between two of them. This is impressive, but also incredibly frustrating when you're the one calling (we'll get to that). The MRI experience itself was fine given the circumstances. I enjoyed the classic rock to take my mind off it and help me avoid having a panic attack (apparently I'm only claustrophobic when in a coffin like structure that rattles and hums - no U2 reference intended). Well, it's been 5 months and my only conclusion now is that I got a free MRI. Why, you ask? They haven't billed my insurance yet. It thought this was odd after a few months, so I called to get the scoop. After about 30 minutes on hold (see above), I was told to contact their main office. More holding....Eventually, I was told that they had billed my insurance and would submit it again. That was in late November....still nada. Now, I can track pending claims on my insurance's website and they update it very regularly and have processed claims since this one but there's no word at all on it. If they want give me this one gratis, that's fine by me...but I'm guessing it's incompetence instead. Since I'm eventually going to be billed for this, I'd like for it to happen sooner than later. read more

I've no complaints about my MRI technician who was professional and kind. However, my doctor's office informed me 3 weeks after the procedure that they hadn't received the MRI results. I have called Washington Radiology in Chevy Chase 3 times. Each time the medical records option went straight to voicemail with a promise for a response within 48 hours. It has been 4 days with no call back and 4 weeks since my procedure. This is irresponsible and cruel. Although I've received mammograms here for over a decade, I've lost faith in their professionalism and will go elsewhere. read more

I love this place. I've been here three times for different services, and each time they've been friendly, attentive, and provided the best services in the DC area. Though I now live in VA and it's a commute to get out here, I'd still rather use their services. My recent time there they were short-staffed and overwhelmed. Most places would've ignored me and have forgotten about me, but the nurse for my visit, Joyce, kept coming up to me and reassuring me that they'd get to me soon. The doctor on duty, Dr. Holland, also gave her personal apologies for my wait and told me that I was "the most patient person in the world." That was a nice compliment! I also like how the air conditioning in the lab matched the weather. When it was warmer out they'd have cool, refreshing air; in the colder weather the air would be toasty and relaxingly warm. I cannot stop raving about this place. Top-notch service and a clean facility. A-plus! read more
