its a hotel, where there is a million things to judge, and so is my theory how hotels have such overall horrible reviews. And i get it, so when reading a Hotel review I skip over alot and take most reviews with a grain of salt. Washington Square hotel Hotel darn near checked every box though when we visited this weekend. We arrived to an elegant walk up entry to a hotel that had a midcentury style and grace to it. It was a very quick check in. We took 1 of the elevators up to our room on the 3rd. I didn't know till later at check out we actually had room 305, the Bob Dillon, Joan Baez room. It was small but spacious room, if that makes any sense. Bed was harder than I liked that night but but after a fun night(which was all blocks away), I crashed hard. The continental breakfast had ok croissants and some made to order coffee options so a big win. But besides being close to the comedy club and the mix of classy and trashy bars, it also was right there by Washing Square park. One of the most famous, but also funny enough, one of the the most unrated around in my book. Sunday morn we walked in around 10am to chess players, dog trainers, piano players, and the most pleasant people. I'm pretty sure that one of our next NY trips will be with a stay at the WSH. read more

The return visit to the old haunt did not disappoint. I can't recall why I first stayed here so long ago, but were I to guess it would be price and location. In the day that's all that mattered and the simple provisions then were more than adequate. Anymore the former is less of an issue, thankfully, and location matters but sometimes amenities motivate a more out of the way place just for the pampering. Choosing here for this recent visit was as much a reminiscence as it was everything else. And, bottom line, it didn't disappoint on any metric. The price point is right on. The location is absolutely the best in town. In the middle of so many favorite things and the old neighborhood too so maybe I'm partial. The room was a king room for as who has time for no kings. Upper floor, quiet, comfortable and clean. The desk and the door were both affable and accommodating. Some, it seems, require more attention than others. I am not one of these. A quick greeting or farewell is adequate; obsequiousness makes me uncomfortable. There are zero reasons not to stay here. Use the shekel you save on fancy dancy dining. WSH rocks. read more

I had a really lovely experience here! I stayed in for a conference at the neighboring NYU building and it was the perfect distance. I arrived well before check in and the staff let us store our stuff in the back safely and they contacted us to let us know our room was available early for check in. The staff were so lovely and the rooms were nice for a three star hotel. AC, a mini fridge, an iron and an in-hotel restaurant made it a great and reasonably priced stop for my stay. I really wanted to speak with the general manager before posting anything regarding my stay. However, after numerous attempts of trying to get a general manager's contact info, via email and on the phone, I have been unsuccessful and I have been no choice but to leave this review. My son and I stayed for one night at the Washington Square Hotel in mid July 2025. Based on reviews that I saw online, I thought that it would be fine for a one night stay. We were attending an event at the NYU theater and it was right across the park, so the location was very convenient. I was traveling alone with my autistic son who is seven and I didn't want to have to deal with multiple Ubers and or the subway. Check in was relatively fast and uneventful. I had inquired if they had any vending machines because it was very hot and we needed some water after traveling. The guy at the front desk said there was a vending machine around the corner after the elevator, but only had water and soda. My son is a milk drinker, but he had to settle for water that day, no big deal. We can't win them all. We went up to our room at first glance it looked clean. However, the longer we were in the room, the more I discovered that the room was actually filthy. The closet door was open and there was also a small utility door in the closet, and upon further inspection, I realized went to some kind of pipes. I tried to close it to the best of my ability, but it would not close tight so I put the ironing board against it and hope that nothing would creep through in the middle of the night. The bathroom had blood spots on the floor with what appeared to be an eyelash or some kind of hair in it? At that point, I was disgusted. As I pulled the sheets down for my son to get into bed, there was dark curly hair on the pillows and throughout the bedding. My son and I are both blonde. I ended up stripping all of the bedding except for the bottom sheet. Now, you might say, why didn't you call the front desk and ask for a clean bedding? Well, the answer is pretty simple: they had been absolutely useless. I had asked them upon arrival if they could give us a few options in the neighborhood that had a kids menu. My my son is autistic and is very rigid with what he'll eat. I told them all I was looking for was chicken tenders. We were told they had no idea and couldn't help. The website states that the staff is very knowledgeable about the neighborhood and would able to help guide. Couldn't be further from the truth. The website also shows a rooftop garden. This is another reason why I booked this hotel. I knew my son would really enjoy that. Well, when I inquired about the rooftop garden, I was told that there is a rooftop garden, and I could see it from my room, however, we were not allowed to go out there. The hallways were so narrow that I couldn't even put my arms out without touching the other wall. I'm 5'3", so my wingspan isn't exceptional. The rooms were also small, but I expected this from a hotel in New York City. What I didn't expect was the filth and uselessness and dismissiveness of the staff. Their website also claims that they have a "lounge" outside of the lobby. That space consisted of about eight small function tables with a bar that was about 6 feet long. Behind the bar there was one bottle of gin. That was it. Also, there was a sign in front of the "lounge" the entire time that we were there that said "Closed". I should mention we would be there on a Friday night until Saturday. I paid $350 for this room, that was disgusting, and for a staff that couldn't find their nose, nevermind help the their patrons. The "doorman" stood next to the iPad stand the entire time we were there. I saw people coming and going and he never opened the door or helped with luggage. So, if you don't mind sleeping on used, dirty sheets, having a filthy room with biohazard material in it, such as blood mixed with hair, and also a utility door open to pipes and god only knows what, with a staff that barely acknowledges your existence, much less help you, this is the place for you. I stayed here after returning from a cruise in August. The staff is very nice and helpful. I love the location, the West Village is a melting pot of all cultures; it isn't just a place to be, it is an experience. Our room was very clean and nicely decorated. It is steps away from several train lines, you can get to anywhere you need to go in the city. Within walking distance there are many options for food that will satisfy all tastes and budgets. If you want to stay in Manhattan but not be near the rat race happening in midtown, this is a nice location to stay. read more

The decor clearly shows its age, the halls are narrow, and the walls are thin. The elevator, while functional, is a little nerve-wracking simply because of how old it is. If staying in a historic hotel isn't your thing, do not book here--you will not enjoy it. That being said, I love old hotels, so the age itself wasn't a drawback for me. What I don't like is when a hotel isn't properly maintained, and unfortunately, there were quite a few areas that needed repairs. Some parts of the hotel felt a bit gritty, and certain areas could have been cleaner. For example, my bathtub was noticeably stained, which made it far less appealing--especially since I love having a bath in my hotel room. Now for the positives: The bed was very comfortable, and despite the thin walls, noise wasn't really an issue during my stay. Of course, this could be a problem if you have particularly loud neighbors, but I didn't experience that. There was no street noise, which is impressive given the location. And I loved being right in the heart of Greenwich Village, with easy access to everything. Lastly, the staff was wonderful--friendly, helpful, and accommodating. If you love historic hotels and don't mind a little wear and tear, this could be a charming stay. But if you're looking for something pristine and polished, this probably isn't the place for you. read more

I've been visiting New York for decades but this is the first time I've stayed in Greenwich Village. I've always gotten lost in this neighbourhood, where a 90 degree street grid format and high-rises give way to low-slung brownstones and intersections bisected by 5 or more streets angled every which way, where there's a Greenwich St. AND a Greenwich Ave., a Broadway AND a W. Broadway. By staying here and allotting several days just to explore the area, I was hoping to become a "temporary local", but by the end of my stay I still needed a map. I'd call the Village, especially the West Village, primarily a residential area, plus the main campus of NYU. There aren't a lot of hotels to choose from, and with NYC's recent increased restrictions on short-term rentals, finding lodging in this area can be a challenge. I chose Washington Square Hotel primarily for its location across the street from Washington Square Park. The hotel has been around since 1902 when it opened as Hotel Earle. Multitudes of esteemed writers and musicians have stayed here; I have the 1970's vinyl album "Diamonds and Rust" on which Joan Baez sings about her romance with Bob Dylan in "that crummy hotel over Washington Square" in the 1960's. The current owners purchased the hotel in the 70's, rechristened it the WSH in the 80's and refurbished it to its current modern state with Art Deco flourishes. It occupies adjoining 9-story and 3-story buildings. It's a simple hotel but offers numerous amenities and far more character than a chain hotel. There was always a friendly doorman, sometimes a valet. The front desk staff, which also do concierge duties, varied in friendliness; I had better luck with the female staff. There's a room off the lobby where one can work if it's not reserved for a small event. There's a restaurant and lounge, North Square, which serves lunch and dinner daily and breakfast on weekends. I did not dine here, but the breakfast menu appeared to be prix-fixe and a good value. There's a fitness centre and a massage room. Rooms are on the small side and also simple, but do have coffee machines, mini-fridges, robes and slippers, a safe, great water pressure in the bathroom. My room on the 9th floor also had great natural light. Ice machines are on the first floor only. It was pretty quiet at night. The W 4th St. Metro stop for the ABCDEFM trains is a block away, the Christopher St. stop for the 1 train a bit further. The West Village is the former home to fictional TV characters from "Friends" and "Sex and the City" as well as Taylor Swift--all still big photo-ops for fans. My husband found this hotel for my NYC birthday trip, and we stayed for 6 nights. Although it wasn't perfect, I'm so glad we stayed here! Amazing location and such a charming hotel. I love older, charming, historic hotels and this one was great for us. The hotel is in Greenwich Village, just across the street from the namesake Washington Square Park and in the NYU neighborhood. We were able to walk everywhere; so many amazing restaurants were within blocks and so was every subway station. Although it closes early, there's a cute little restaurant on the 1st floor (North Square); nice enough for a date or special occasions (there was more than one senior citizen celebrating a birthday!) and laid back enough to go downstairs for a quick bite. Everyone on the staff team was super friendly, greeting us and remembering us every time we came in and out. They left a card and a bottle of bubbly in the room for us when my husband told them we were visiting for my birthday. Our 7th floor room was very clean and bigger than I expected it to be... no fridge and not much closet space, but otherwise just fine for 2 people. The only bummer was that we had paid more for a room with a view, and on the weekend we stayed, the building was covered in scaffolding and construction workers, almost completely blocking any view. We wouldn't have paid extra if we'd known, and we wished we would have been refunded the extra price for a "view room." The first morning we were there, a few workers were right outside our window (like I could open the window, reach out and pat someone on the head) so we couldn't change or anything, and one of them blasted music loudly into our window. He turned it off when we nicely asked him to lower the volume or move it further way, so it was no big deal but I wish we got the view and privacy we paid for. We came here during a big snow storm. We needed to change our flight due to airline asking us to (for free) and we asked for a refund to leave one day early. Not only did they not provide it, they were rude and asked us to jump through hoops to try and get through other ways (Expedia/capital one) just to then find out they were the ultimate decision maker. Completely rude front desk staff. Not service oriented from check in to when we asked questions. We were in from Los Angeles and wanted to have a drink - the restaurant and lounge was close for renovation - and they vaguely gave recommendations saying there were bars two blocks away. The room is TINY. I've stayed in NYC many times and this is one of my the smallest. If you are absolutely stuck without other options stay here. Otherwise save yourself $ and hassle and stay at the Moxy. read more

I have visited this historic landmark hotel for many years. In every way it was great. Not fancy, but charming and lovely front desk staff. ANd, small, lovely, intimate rooms. One of the great things about this hotel is the wonderful breakfast they offered. Various things from eggs of any type to granola, fruit, and yogurt. And, delicious coffee and a lovely, waite staff. I was there on the weekend of 8/9/25 for the first time in six months. I learned that the hotel has been sold. Everything remained to same, except: breakfast was comprised of a lousy 'help yourself' format with bagels and croissants. I truly missed the original breakfast. This omission detracts from the hotel. I was truly disappointed not to have been able to end my visit with an excellent breakfast. Great things don't last forever! read more

When my friend and I went to NYC a while back we stayed at Washington Square and it was great! The hotel was unique and very Art Deco. Our check in process was smooth and easy and they even helped us book a car for drop off at the airport. The room was small, but was perfect since we just needed a space to sleep and shower. The hotel was quiet and clean. It's a great location as it's halfway between midtown manhattan and lower manhattan. Would highly recommend as a great spot to stay if you want to feel more relaxed in NYC and away from more touristy areas. read more

I LOVED staying at the WSH! The check in and check out process was so simple and the staff were awesome. Upon arrival, everyone was so friendly and welcoming. It could not be in a better location as far as Greenwich Village goes, particularly for walking. There are tons of restaurant and bar options near by including North Square which is inside the hotel (shout out to David behind the bar who was such a kind/amazing soul and made a mean Manhattan and toddy!), a CVS around the corner, beautiful Washington Square park, the famous Electric Lady Studios a street over, a convenient Subway station a half a block up, AND about a 10 minute walk to Cornelia Street (for the Swifties out there) and the Friends apartment. There's also a wine and liquor store (probably more) a couple streets over off Thompson. It was about a 30-35 minute Uber ride from LGA, and between 20-30 minute subway ride from Central Park, Times Square, Flat Iron, WTC, The Battery, and even Brooklyn. It was nice to visit all these happening spots and then escape to a more secluded, quieter area at night. The best of both worlds! Price wise, it was very affordable for this time of year. Definitely call the hotel directly to book (I saved about $400 vs booking through Priceline). The rooms are pretty small BUT this hotel is old and historic so that's to be expected. Everything was extremely clean and pristine, no complaints there! There were also staff members readily available if anything arose or we needed anything. The elevator was never backed up. I also loved the old and cozy decor. Highly recommend! Will stay here again in a heartbeat. read more

Such a difference a day makes. My family have s tayedhere since I was a young man, decades ago. We always love the homey feeling; consistent staff year after year, they remember us. One of the best restaurants in NY, under-promoted but you cannot beat it, really. And fabulous breakfasts. We were a little concerned when we heard the hotel was being sold, but they assured nothing would change for at least a year while new owners looked things over. Wow. We had our usual breakfast for a couple of days and it was fantastic. Rare to find an American who knows how to make a decent omelette. But later? We werewarned breakfast would be "Continental" because they're going to rebuild the kitchen, bar, and restaurant. (Really, why do them all at once during the summer?) We went downstairs expecting a true Continental style breakfast - meats, cheeses (good cheeses, not American cheese if that's a cheese even), decent bread (they had excellent bread here), good butter, coffees. Instead there are now carbohydrates and and sad sweet rolls. There were pears and apples, and the staff were wonderful as always, but if you wanted enough protein to get through a day of sight seeing, you'd need so many yogurts and even that wouldn't hold you. Part of why we've always stayed each year at this hotel was the restaurant is quiet and feels like Europe. Now that these new people have taken over and if this is their idea of a decent breakfast? I don't doubt when their renovating is over the restaurant will be like every other mediocre hotel restaurant here - lots of bodies packed in small space, noise dampening gone, loud music, and probably different chefs. A big disappointment. Yes it was free. So are breakfast at cheaper hotels. I would rather have the option of a cooked breakfast, like some hotels where you can eat the free "Continental breakfast" or order from a menu. Even a limited menu. Why not do the kitchen very very quickly, then open one of the two rooms (barlounge or restaurant) at least for breakfast? This has made us very sad. We will look for other options for our winter stay. read more

We had a great four-night stay at the Washington Square Hotel. Our room was clean, the bed was comfortable, and we had a good selection of pillows. The continental breakfast was just what we needed to start our day (including GF bread when requested). The staff were all friendly and welcoming, and the location was perfect for us -- so close to Washington Square Park, restaurants, shops, and the subway. If you've heard of the new Tashkent Supermarket, it is in the same block as the hotel, and has an amazing hot bar, salad bar, bakery, and more. Can't wait to stay at this hotel again! read more

After reading history and reviews of WSH I booked 9 nights. We arrived early evening after an overnight train from Chicago. The doorman helped us with our luggage out of our ride share. The desk person, Anna, was very welcoming and got us checked in and up to our top floor room in no time. The room had two twins that was perfect for us. Although on the smaller side, typical of older NY hotels, it was well appointed and had a great view of The Village. Before we knew it we were out exploring and heading to a restaurant I was excited to eat at again. Over the next 9 days we had excellent maid service. Every day when we left the hotel, the doormen were so helpful pointing us in the right direction. They gave us a great weekly rate which was less than many other hotels in the area. Hats off to all the friendly staff. They also have a small but well equipped gym off the lobby that my partner took advantage of. Will definitely book at Washington Square on my next journey to New York. read more

We absolutely enjoyed our recent stay at WSH. The staff were most welcoming and very hospitable - and really made our visit special. The hotel is quaint and charming in a quiet neighborhood, and the close access to the subway station made it ideal. We discovered an amazing Turkish/Greek grocery market at the end of the street that served up super delicious ready-made ethnic dishes. We stayed in the executive king room, and we loved it! ... Our room size was more than adequate -- well-equipped, modern, and clean. The highlights were the large cozy comfortable beds, and the soft luxury bathroom towels. We highly recommend WSH and plan to return on our next visit. read more

Older historical boutique hotels are my thing. I love and prefer them. It's obviously not a new hotel but rooms have been updated well. If you need something more modern, probably better to stay elsewhere. I think it's a beautiful property. It's a bit of a rough scene in Washington square park across the way, but I used to live in the neighborhood so no shocker there. Room was spacious enough, very clean, with a comfortable bed. Nice tub and roomy bathroom. It's an excellent location & very convenient to get anywhere in Manhattan. The customer service was fine and it's a good price point. So much more character than the newer chain hotels. Small hallways so you can hear everything happening out there from your room, but I feel like that's the case for many, if not most hotels in nyc. I'm one night into a four-night stay for business and unfortunately my trip is already ruined. The experience here is closer to experiences I've had at hotels in places like Morocco and Mexico, among the worst I've had traveling for work in the U.S. My room is sweltering. The window won't open past six inches, the climate control will only heat, the radiator is turned to high, and the night staff can't do anything about it. They were kind enough to give me a fan. Tomorrow would have been an important day for me at work -- but I can't sleep. There's nothing the hotel can now do to mitigate this experience, short of moving me to a better hotel within the hour. read more

Small and boutique-y and very pretty outside and in. Great location in Washington Square Park and so close to everything in the village. I did not visit the lounge/restaurant aside from the bathroom (which is teeny!). The rooms are well furnished and clean. There was a picture of a man with gorgeous bedroom eyes hanging above the bed, and the eyes seemed to follow you (another reviewer had a child picture above their bed so the smoldering man was much better). There were some reviews about the rudeness of staff and I cannot relate to this. Everyone was personable and helpful, one shout in particular goes to a man working the lobby who seems to do a little bit of everything. Very funny and helpful, full of recommendations for us and remembered us each time he saw our group. He gave us some of his homemade hot sauce in TSA approved bottles after a conversation on liking spicy food. Definitely enjoyed our stay here and would return. read more

Must stay in NYC! Love this place!! I've stayed several times over the years. And while it is a bit old fashioned (which I happen to love) it is clean, convenient, reasonable and charming! The Penthouse King and Adjoining Room were key for our group this time. And the view of the Halloween festivities from our windows was perfect (for the girls to feel entertained at arms length)! Easy access if driving, closeby parking garage and beautiful views/access to Washington Sq Park. Lots of food and shopping nearby. Love this place. Will definitely be back! read more

Hospitality. Washington Square Hotel's is highly selective. You feel handled, not welcomed, brusque even by Manhattan's often impersonal standards, especially as a single business traveler. Usually, when you check in you are greeted with a welcome. The best I got was "What can I do for you?" No welcome. I was told that my room wasn't ready. Normally you provide your ID and card at most hotels, they process it, and text you when your room is ready, or tell you that they'll have your bag put in your room, or you're good to go when you come back at 3:30 in their case. Nope. "You can put that away," I was told "you don't need it now." The desk guy says to see the doorman and he'll get my bag in storage. Ok. The doorman, while I'm in that exchange, is happily chatting up some woman who is moving her kid out of NYU, which is down the street, for the summer. She walks away as I finish. I say: "Excuse me, where do I..." he walks away from me, and raises a finger of silence without even addressing me. THAT was a moment of dismissive that I've never experienced in a hotel, ever, and highly unprofessional. He then returns from looking for the maintenance guy who apparently deals with the bags. This is beneath him. Too bad. I had a $5 tip for my little bag, because I generally treat staff the way I would expect to be treated when I give good service in the things that I do. He watched me tip the guy, and I ended up on his FO list the next day as well. The rest of the staff isn't much better. Housekeeper on the elevator doesn't say good afternoon or hello. Just glowers at me from the back of the tiny elevator like a caged cat, even after I said hello to her. This morning I shared an elevator with some Indian guy with a bunch of room numbers in his hand on some sheets of hotel paper. Again I say good morning. I get a surly nod out of the dude. In the boutique hotel biz, how you handle people is what keeps me going to y'all and bypassing my Bonvoy or Hyatt deals. The rooms and hallways are clean, and maintenance is pretty good. The room chairs are spartan. I like the floating floor, but they put the beds on carpet casters that roll when you sit down on them. Someone of the many older people whom I see staying here is going to miss the bed by a few inches and that will be a bad day. They need wheels that are locked. They make a lousy first impression. And second. And third. I can only attribute this to bad management. I was just at a hotel where staffing was stretched but every person was kind and didn't take it out on their guests. With few hotels in this part of town, they think they have a captive market, with NYU down the street? Marriott it is, next time. I don't pay people to be treated like a problem, not a person. read more

Short: Great location. Authentic, New York feel to the hotel. Big, quiet room. Amazing shower pressure. Long: I went to NYU a looooong time ago and lived in the village when I went to school. Loved it. For some reason, after I moved to California and went back to visit friends and family, I almost always stayed uptown. (In college, anything above 14th street was "uptown" to us, but I mean closer to Central Park than Washington Square Park.) Anyway, last year I decided to stay in my old stomping grounds. I definitely made the right choice! The village is a great area for a variety of reasons: people watching, restaurants, live music and comedy, and just a generally cool vibe. Oh yeah, the hotel. It's located closer to the park than any other hotel. It's really old, but that's what I love about it. My room felt like I was in a NY apartment 100 years ago. Big windows that actually open, an A/C unit in one window, and a small window in the bathroom, overlooking...nothing. Thankfully, the bed is modern and comfortable and the water pressure in the shower was so great, it deserves a second mention. I don't have much recollection about my interactions with hotel staff, but they were friendly and check in/out was smooth. I'll pay more attention when I stay there again in February! If you're staying in the village, or really anywhere in Manhattan, don't rent a car. Too costly and unnecessary (and New York drivers are a whole different beast!) I used to SHOUT at the wind. This was my first trip to New York and with the help of my husband, we picked this hotel together. It's an older hotel. Great staff, I enjoyed interacting with the lobby attendants and receptionist. Our room was super duper small, without a view outside, but rather into a drain, didn't bother me, it smelled like Disneyland's Pirates of the Caribbean. It was dark and quiet, a nice retreat from the hustle and bustle. We were able to place our luggage into the dresser drawers. Turn on the TV and chill. Due to the humidity, we did need fresh towels, it took like two days if we were lucky to get our towel to dry. Now lets talk about that shower in our tiny room of #215, that is the best shower ever! Has 5 knobs that control 5 different water functions. We seriously want a shower like this if we ever own a place. Continental breakfast is included till 11am. They offer tea, coffee, OJ, bagels, toast, muffins, granola, yogurt, fruit and spreads. The hotel is located across the street from Washington Square Park. Close to the Subway. Down the street from Comedy Cellars. Overall really good location. read more

So quaint and charming, and the location cannot be beat. With any luck, you'll actually end up with a direct view of the park from your room. The little touches throughout (like the hand painted decorative Washington Square Arch tiles) are really fun and add to the atmosphere. They keep C.O. Bigelow products in the bathroom. Keeping it local, I love it! Also, the free breakfast is the best I've encountered from a city hotel, feels very akin to midsize hotels of Europe. Fresh-squeezed orange juice and fresh-cut fruit, pastry basket brought frequently to your table, a plethora of cereal choices and little individually wrapped wedges of Tillamook cheddar. The rates can fluctuate quite a bit, but whenever it's reasonable my out of town family loves to stay here! read more

I can't say enough about this adorable boutique hotel. It is the absolute perfect location in Greenwich Village and a must stay for my annual girls trips. It is walking distance to so much shopping, restaurants and night life. Staff is so kind too, and they even have a small gym! Two double bed rooms are available too, something that is hard to find in NYC. Decor could use a little updating but it's really no big deal and we couldn't love this gem of a hotel more. read more

I had a wonderful stay at this hotel! It's in the perfect location just kitty corner from Washington Square Park, making it steps away from all of the food and drink spots you could possibly want, and a straight shot to many other areas of the city via taxi. The hotel itself is a historical building with a lot of character. The inside is beautiful with what I would assume to be much of the original architecture and design, very well maintained over time. The area of Washington Square Park itself was actually shockingly quiet, especially after 10pm. My favorite part of my stay was definitely the doorman, who was extremely personable and helpful, as well as being very knowledgeable about the city. I will definitely be staying at this hotel again! read more

This hotel has everything going for it: an excellent location in the heart of Greenwich Village, vintage chic decor (think Old Hollywood), functional and immaculate rooms, and staff like Craig, Jerome and Jacob who are friendly, accommodating, and treat guests like family. We had breakfast two mornings and the choices were great. Our room was on the small size but included everything one needs on a long weekend away, including mini fridge, comfortable beds, blackout drapes. Everything worked as it should. Me and my girlfriend booked a queen room for 7days and were given two unstable single beds pushed together. The rude staff will do everything in their power to ensure that you are inconvenienced every step of your stay. The location is unbeatable. The rooms are good sized, esp. for New York! The rates are also very reasonable. There is not wifi in all rooms, so I had to hang out with my laptop in the lobby (luckily there are comfortable couches). The wait for the tiny elevator can sometimes be lengthy, so take the stairs. I could deal with all of this but there was one thing I couldn't. The whole place had a musty (or worse) scent during our stay there. Perhaps it was the summer, perhaps it was the humidity, perhaps it was. . . It could have been anything but really, who wants to stay in a room or hotel that stinks? read more

This boutique hotel solves an interesting packing problem: how to get lots of tiny living quarters into a small volume. My room was about 30% as large as the room in Toronto that I checked out of before boarding my flight from YYZ to LGA. I was astonished by its dimensions when I first walked in but am forced to concede that the designers have done an admirable job of making my dollhouse as livable as possible. I came during the summer and was struck by the *pair* of air conditioners that were servicing my minuscule room: there was one in the unique window in my bedroom and a second one (a Mitsubishi model that is popular in Asia) over the door. Everything associated with the room worked OK, including the WiFi, which I clocked at 4.86 Mbps download and 3.31 Mbps upload. (A small blemish: my bathroom was stocked with two bottles of body wash but no bottles of shampoo.) Included in the room charge is a "continental" breakfast that's served at 7:15ish. The breakfast offers good brewed coffee, OK mini-croissants, Greek yogurt and small plastic containers of granola. In case you want espresso, Stumptown is only a few steps away. The Washington Square Hotel has location, location and location. Walk outside and you're in the center of the Universe (one of the centers, anyway!). read more
