Dover sole with fettuccini and beurre blanc

Located inside a Japanese style hotel in Hillsboro, you wouldn't expect it but, Waterfalls could be a destination in itself. The menu here is mostly French + Pacific Northwest cuisine at dinner, with some very Japanese elements. The food was very good and actually quite reasonably priced given the quality and the generous portions of fish and meat. Service was slower, given that there was only one server, but very friendly and attentive. They also have a long sake list of 20+ options that you can try in the cute little sake bar. For dinner, we had the fried cod, the dover sole, mushroom soup, prosciutto with melon and fruit cocktail, and the pork Katsu. All the dishes were great. We came back for breakfast as we were staying there and just couldn't resist the very Japanese sake teishoku set (salmon, rice, miso soup) and Katsu Kare for breakfast, which definitely cater to the Japanese clientele who I assume come for Intel related vendors. The curry had just a slight kick to it and they used short grain rice which is great. The pricing is odd here, but I love it. The salmon set cost just $12 while a regular full American breakfast is $20. They also do a $12 burger special compared to their $35-40 entrees at dinner. I'd come back here again. Everything was clean and modern looking. During they daylight the restaurant overlooks their little Japanese moss garden which is nice too.

Curry and Rice with a fried egg

It was a beautiful setting, and the lobby had a koi fish pond right in the center. The food was great, the beef curry with the egg was delicious! Definitely will be back.

We dined during their soft opening so a few negatives were understandable. First, our male server was excellent! They only offer beer and wine so it is hoped that a full bar is in their future. I'm not an IPA guy, but the Deschutes Fresh Squeezed was the best I've had. The dining area was tasteful, clean lines and minimal. For now, you choose between three prix fixe options: $50 (A), $70 (B), and $90 (C). I selected option A, but requested the fried fish from option B, but they refused. Loved the salad which included beef and salmon, but the "American cheese" was a little off-putting. The puff pastry was decent, the scallops and mushrooms very good, but nobody liked the Mac and cheese (especially because it was cold.). The steak topped with a delicious butter was more than worthy. The two desserts options were meh, I think most people would prefer vanilla or another contrary ice cream flavor over chocolate to complement the oozing chocolate cake. And crème brûlée is getting dated. The chef came out to say hello, nice touch. Took a tour of hotel and offering. Overall, they should fill a niche and do well.

Fantastic Japanese/French fusion restaurant. Don't be put off by the fact it's in a hotel. Truly a hidden gem here in Hillsboro.

Mainly due to one INCREDIBLY rude employee, who i am going to assume is the manager, or something close, considering she was the only one in plain clothes, and not in a uniform or server outfit. This woman was an absolute walking nightmare. First off, we came in around 1pm. Mind you, this location closes at 3pm. So immediately, after we walked in, we stood there for a good minute or so before one of the FIVE employees, including nightmare manager lady, who were standing on, in or around the front counter ask "table for two?".. as the manager slowly grabbed our menus to hand to the server, i immediately noticed she had an attitude. Almost like she was annoyed we were coming to eat.. I shook it off, we sat down. We had our small dog in a stroller, so we had asked to eat outside. The outside area was busy. It is a sunny 70+ degree day so we asked for as much shade as we could get. The server pointed us towards a table with one half completely in the sun. We pointed to the 3-4 tables behind us that were in full shade. The server said they just closed that section. Umm ok, but, not the severs fault that the available tables were in the sun.. so, ok, no problem. We sat down. It took our server a while to get to us, but she was hustling and doing very her best. When she got to us she was gracious and very friendly. She was also very accommodating when we ask for our meal to be split to share. I wish i had gotten her name because she was the only nice part of our experience today and she was a lovely young lady. So, as we waited for our food, my mother was getting uncomfortable in the direct sun. I offered to switch seats, but she just tried to move her chair more to the side, towards the inner isle. Nightmare manager whips out of the door and VERY rudely, and loudly, barks at my 74yr old mother "mam, that's just not going to work! It's too narrow in here!" Everyone looked at us as she yelled this at my mother. At this point, most of the tables outside were emptying. So i said "could we maybe switch tables? She's just very uncomfortable in the sun." this nightmare of a human throws her hand up at us, like IN OUR FACES, and in a very annoyed voice says "you gotta give me a minute " and darts past us. We were floored. My mom and I look at each other like "huh?!?" There is now very few people left in the entire restaurant, inside or out. So it was pretty clear it was less about being busy and more that she was simply in "i want to close up and go home" mode. But hey, food service can be stressful, i get that. What i don't get is yelling at customers like they're your five year old. At this point the servers are wiping down the tables and stacking chairs. Mind you, it's only been roughly 20 min. So it's about 1:30pm.. again, they close at 3pm. But they were all clearly in shut down mode.. So when nightmare manager lady doesn't come back, we asked another server if we could move. She looks around at the empty tables, that are now 100% in the shade, and is like "ummmmmmmm, sure?" I said "great!" Got up and move to the shadiest table. Then nightmare manager whips outside again, and, as we are picking up our our silverware and water cups, this woman shoves next to my mom, who fumbling with her water glass, purse and silverware, and begins wiping the table down before we even retrieved our things. She says nothing to us. Her body language was aggressive and she was obviously very annoyed. Annnnnd that's when I called it. We hadn't even received our food. We got up and left, while I chipped "you can tell them to just throw our food away. You've been incredibly rude and we're done" and we left. This woman ruined a lovely Sunday afternoon i was spending with my mother. She was annoyed and rude the second we interacted with her. She may be stressed out, but to treat customers with such obvious distain, is unacceptable. This woman clearly can't handle the pressure.. so i HIGHLY recommend they get her out of the kitchen, LITERALLY! To this nightmare woman, i am so sorry we annoyed you with our business today. Don't worry, we will not be back..

They are in an industrial area so I'm guessing a big chunk of their business comes from folks who work in that area. Lines can be long, mostly owing to these characters who love paying sky-high prices for a drink that tastes nothing like coffee. Me? I like mine black, no additives. If I wanted a frappe I'd go to Dairy Queen. Yes, I'm a Navy Vet and a coffee snob. if the person ahead of me in line wants more than a little cream in their coffee my head starts to hurt. More than five additives and have a defibrillator handy. Seating is limited and often not an option. You'll likely be sharing a bench with one or more afore-mentioned daisies sipping on some drink that took a half hour to concoct. I'd love it if they had a separate line and seating for normal folk who just want a coffee of the day. But it is what it is.

The service was OK, but they asked for a tip before providing any. That's always off putting. Especially when I had to change out the coffee carafe to get my own cup of coffee. That said, the coffee was nothing special. It was cool to see the roasting facility through the glass in the dining area. Now let's talk about the breakfast. My husband had the eggs Benedict and it was OK. I ordered the West Coast Hash and eggs and it wasn't OK. My over medium eggs were microwave rubber. Moved like silly putty. The hash was 99% potatoes and microscopic squares of ham and chopped dried bacon. The meal was very unpleasant. The best part of the hash were the diced jalapeños. This place is a one and done for me.

I have been looking for a decent breakfast/brunch place close by but so far no luck there. I am still recovering from renal failure so my mobility is severely limited. I travel mostly at the pleasure of the Veterans Transportation Service or Trimet Lyft. Today's Dr appointment finished up sooner than expected so I had some time to kill before the van returned to take me home. So I fired up my tablet and took a look on Yelp to see if there was anything of interest close by. Enter Insomnia Coffee. Lots of positive reviews. Right around the corner. So... off I go. I an a US Navy brownwater sailor. We drink coffee that tastes like coffee. No additives. None. Not even cream or (gasp) sugar. So when I told the barista [HA! The person who pours coffee into a cup] that i wanted a cup of coffee black I got this sort of deer in the headlights look. What? ...I'm sure she was thinking... no Madagascar cinnamon? no foaming goop? no stale crouton crumbs? no pumpkin pie spice? Ummmm seriously? People want their coffee to taste like pumpkin? Yikes. No Miss... just a cuppa Joe. Just like my first heart throb, Anna Mae Bullock....strong and black. And I have to say, insomnia delivered. Not a bad cup of coffee at all. Although I didn't really want to hang out there since it appeared that I had zero in common with anyone I saw there... hogging the comfortable looking chairs. So I had it in a paper cup, to go. Now I have a "thing" about drinking coffee from a large, ceramic mug.... I loathe tasting paper in my coffee and yes I can tell it's in a paper cup even blindfolded. but I digress. They did have a whole display area of decadent looking pastries and not the tiny, overpriced, bogus looking stuff you see at Starbucks. Not that i would ever go into a Starbucks even to use the rest room. They had several pies that made my mouth water and some gooey breakfast glazed things that would have seriously spiked my glucose. so I reluctantly passed. Perhaps next time :)

I always knew about this little bread making factory, but now I finally get what the hype is all about. Here's a few little reasons as to what makes this place "Great!" * Parking Situation * It's next to a Safeway, so plenty of spaces for parking. People come and go, so front row parking is usually obtainable. * Dining Expectations * First of all, they're a tiny shop, and there's only one long stand-up table against the window. So basically, no 'sit-down' dining. If you're grabbing lunch, you can also expect a lunch line due to its popularity. Sometimes the line can be out the door. * The Harvest Offerings * What impressed me most, was walking in with a warm welcome from the staff, and being offered a slice of bread to sample. They even offer some of their buttery spreads you can spread on it too. And it happens with every visit! Here's a few sandwiches I've tried: ~ Classic Turkey (1/2 sandwich, $6) made with their garlic cheddar bread. A simple sandwich with lettuce, tomatoes, slices of turkey, mayo, and Tillamook cheddar. It's that soft bread that made it all so yummy. ~ Tuna Salad Sandwich (whole, $10), and I gotta say their tuna ain't so bad either. Not heavy on the dill flavor, but flavorful and filling enough. I had this on their wheat bread, and I'd say they make a tasty whole wheat! ~ Other favorites I've tried, their Club sando with Turkey slices and bacon. And their BLTA with avocado of course. Both are just yummy classics. Yes, I'd say their offerings are basic sandwiches, but really you gotta experience this place just because of the bread alone. They do have a display case full of pastries like their breakfast bun with egg, two types of cinnamon rolls, two types of bread pudding, brownies, scones, muffins, and various types of cookies. Look behind you and they've got a shelf with 'Day old cookies' that are still sweet to eat! But in closing, come here for the samples, come here for the sandos, come here for the pastries! What more can you ask for? (Well, I did ask if they can toast the bread for my sando, but they said they cannot. I get it. Just thought I'd ask lol).
