BluePearl Pet Hospital - Her when she's at her best!

    BluePearl Pet Hospital

    (41 reviews)

Our experience with BluePearl Veterinary Hospital in Duluth was one of the most heartbreaking…read moreexperiences we've ever had as pet owners. We drove three hours after calling ahead and being told to bring our dog in. She had suddenly lost the use of her hind legs and was crying in pain. The veterinary assistants were compassionate, caring, and treated her with dignity. They deserve our sincere thanks. We waited patiently for over two and a half hours, understanding that emergency hospitals must triage patients. Then a veterinary technician--not a veterinarian--told us they would not be able to see our dog. I pleaded for one thing: if they couldn't treat her, could a veterinarian at least provide enough pain medication to ease her suffering until we could find help elsewhere? The answer was simply no. So we picked up our helpless dog and drove another three hours home while she whimpered and cried in pain the entire way. No family should have to watch an animal they love suffer like that after being told to come in for care. Emergency medicine isn't just about saving lives--it's about relieving suffering. In our case, compassion seemed to end at the front desk. We left feeling abandoned, heartbroken, and utterly disgusted.

I waited about a month before I wrote this review. I wanted to make certain that I had my wits, and…read morewords, about me before proceeding. Last month, my husband and I had to make the almost 2-hour journey from Cohasset, MN to Duluth, MN with my 3.5 lb., 13 year old Chorkie, Dixxy as she was very ill and needed help DESPERATELY. Our vet couldn't fit her in as they already had to squeeze in three other "urgent" visits. They suggested that we could take her to Blue Pearl or wait until Saturday (the next day) and take her to Bemidji. Well, we were so worried about her that we decided on taking her that night to Blue Pearl. We called ahead of time to tell them we we coming and what was going on. In order for anyone reading this review...this is what she was experiencing: 1) She would not eat and hadn't eaten for 3 days 2) Lethargy had set in the day before we took her 3) She was now GULPING water like a Camel and then throwing it all up within 2 hours later 4) Her eyes had gone from big and bright to TINY and clouded. We got there right around 5:30 pm on a Friday night. We went in and they took her back to evaluate her and decided she could wait. So we did...for 4 HOURS. At this time, I asked for a MedTech to take her back and check he Glucose level because a tiny dog like her can crash without warning. I also stated I was really worried about her hydration levels. She took her into the back for literally 45 seconds to a minute. Came back out with her and informed me that her Glucose level was 74. She handed her to me and before I could ask her about her hydration, she practically sprinted away from me and was gone! So, we waited 2 more HOURS and finally asked the gal at the front if they will be able to see her because we were looking at not getting home until 2:00 AM as it was and I had a wedding I was to be at (I'm a Photographer) Saturday early afternoon and the wedding was in ND! She then put us into a "waiting room" for another 45 minutes and STILL not seen. We told her we were leaving and how unhappy I was with all this!! We got home and my husband went to bed as he now had put in a 22-hour day. I got Dixxy comfortable in the living room on her little bed on the couch. I was cleaning up the kitchen when I heard her get off the couch. I came around the couch and saw her standing next to one of the dog beds on the floor by the fireplace. Just then, she threw up so violently that it cleared the dog bed (12 inches across and as high on the sides as she is tall) and HIT THE WALL! Needless to say, I was an absolute wreck and I believed I was watching my dog die!! This was now about 5:30 in the morning. I stayed up and called the Bemidji Animal Hospital at 8:00 am and they were able to see her right away. I couldn't go with so I had texted my husband a NOVEL of everything I wanted them to do and at the top of the list was SUBCUTANEOUS FLUIDS. I know from experience that Subcutaneous Fluids take literally 30 seconds to administer and why Blue Pearl did not address that is BEYOND MADDENING! Bemidji was Fantastic! She was soooo dehydrated that not only did she need subcutaneous fluid, but also an IV! They did a scan and an x-ray and they did not show any obstructions. Now here's the BIG Kicker. Her Blood Panel showed 4 abnormalities PLUS her Glucose Level was 41...FORTY ONE! 80 is considered an optimal level. She had lost almost a full pound and weighed 2.7 Lbs! And her eyes were a direct result of EXTREME dehydration!!! SHE WAS IN CRISIS and had we not gotten her care there, we would have lost her. So to RECAP the 1 Star Review...In SIX hours they GLANCED at her 2x and in those 2x they didn't see how dehydrated she was?!? They couldn't take the literally 30 SECONDS to give her subcutaneous fluids to tithe her over until they could give her a thorough exam?? If they had simply done that, it would have prevented the Glucose crash, I KNEW was coming, because she would have ate! It's lazy and just plain horrible veterinary care!

And they refuse to take him any longer. No context, no explanation of what happened, obviously he felt threatened, which makes me wonder what kind of people they have work in there. He is a golden retriever for God sakes, and has never attempted to bite anyone or any other animal in his life, however, somehow, Petco managed to make him do it. So they claim.

This store needs to be shut down immediately. They do not care about any of the animals or fish in their care. Words cannot describe how awful this store is.

Let me start out by saying that Bobby is the best Kitten that we could ever ask for. The day we brought him home, he was a bit shaken up from the car ride. When we let him down, he ran into the closet and hid for a few hours. It was also his first day away from his brothers and sisters. I assume that he was taken from his mommy that day too. That night, I went into his room to go check on him. I was wearing a fuzzy pink bath robe. He walked right up to me, snuggled up in the bath robe until he fell asleep on me. Ever sense Bobby has been a wonderful addition to our home. He likes lots of play time. His favorite toy is the mouse on a stick. He also likes to play hide and seek. Bobby has never had a litter box accident. He enjoys walking on the window sill and playing with his ball.Bobby seems like a very happy kitten and seems very healthy too. He is growing more and more every day. Bobby is extremely affectionate and enjoys sleeping in our bed with us at night. We would like to thank you for all of the helpful advice that the lady at petco gave us when we wanted to adopt Bobby. He goes to the vet this week for his next check up. The petco coupons were very useful. The information that you provided us with was very helpful too. We wish we could have taken in his mother and two brothers which we hear are still up for adoption. We know that they will go to good homes though. Thank you so much for saving Bobby so that we could give him a good home. If anyone needs a good kitten, we will tell them to try warm Fuzzies first Jaz D

I was adamant because of the distance and it being winter (it was a 1 hour 40 minute drive both ways) but was struggling to find the kind of training I needed. I found them finally, I was so excited! We set up a phone call and I talked with Ram. I expressed that I have terrible anxiety and my dog would be needing to be trained for service and I have PTSD and Panic disorder. I requested that he would jump on my lap when he knows I'm having anxiety, to ground me and of course his basic knowledge like heeling and no barking for being in public. They agreed and told me everything I needed could be done with them! The start was basic training with him the first couple weeks, which she said he already knew how to sit and go down that I had taught him. When I went to visit and do an exercise with him the owner walked in and Stinger was barking like crazy at him and settled down once he knelt down to pet him. When I picked Stinger up January 16th he was barking uncontrollably when they walked in the building and I could tell Sarah couldn't get him to stop and it went on for a while. My heart sank because the barking was the most important thing that he shows he's behaving and wouldn't disrupt anyone by being my service dog. I have struggled with this most days and it's extremely embarrassing when you're in public and he barks. It's a lot of hospital settings due to appointments and things. I told them what was happening and they said tell him "leave it and snap his collar". That worked for a couple days. I don't think that's safe for his neck either the way Sarah showed me how to do it, it ultimately just scares him and I do not want to hurt or scare my dog when he should just listen to the commands.. Stinger is hairless. He requires clothing to keep him warm. Oct-Nov and Jan training months, I specifically stated he needs to wear his jacket outside. They sent me update pics and he was outside with no jacket each time. They called me and said Stinger has a cough, I was upset immediately and calmly said "have you been putting his jacket on? Because a dog can get a cough being too cold?!" She said the other dogs were puncturing it and that's why he hadn't been wearing it. I then said he has to wear it (AGAIN) and if it gets ruined I'll buy him a new one. Well January with the snow he has boots. I told them he does NOT go outside without these on and he cannot be out there for more then 10-20 minutes. When I went to pick him up the 16th he didn't even have his boots on walking from the kennel to me then we would be leaving. Lots of snow that day. It made me sick to my stomach, like was my dog being neglected of his needs? :'( The second time around when he was boarded for training he was not taught the up command for grounding like requested, she pretended she did but it was very obvious it wasn't trained. I asked for heel to be involved with his training because he must have not caught on to it well the first time around. This was not done. When I went to pick him up she had me play with a toy with him. Zero training. I followed all of the new commands he learned, everything to a T and always asked if I was doing something right. Continued every day and still do try. It's very frustrating :'( There were a lot of things the trainer could have done differently to make the experiences go better than they did. October 20th-November 14th - $2,400 (Picking up the 17th would have been a full 5 weeks). January 5th-16th - $1,700 (Picking up the 19th would have been a full 3 weeks) Training at Menards: November 20th - $75 December 2nd & 16th - $150 Training at McDonalds: February 2nd, 10th, & 23rd - $225
