I stumbled on this coffee shop during a visit to Bend and had a great experience here! The staff were all so kind and friendly. I arrived near closing time and they let me know I could enjoy the backyard after they had closed, which was very sweet. I ordered a Huckleberry Italian Soda, which was $5.50 for a 20 ounce. I waited (what felt like) a very long time--probably around 12 minutes--for this drink, even though there were only 2 people in front of me. This is not a place I would choose if I were in a hurry! Luckily, the only thing pulling me was the Looney Bean's gorgeous back yard and the view of the river. The back yard is huge, with plenty of seating and river views. When I visited (a Sunday afternoon), the neighboring Pine Street Tavern had live music on their back patio, so I enjoyed mellow hits of the 70s and 80s while sipping my soda. If I lived in Bend, this coffee shop would be my go-to hang out/remote work spot. read more

Anyone who knows me knows that I am always searching for the best coffee on this planet. I have tried a few coffee trucks and shops in the Bend area during my visit. I searched for good reviews but I have been disappointed it's become a running joke- here I am in the coffee corner of the US and I can't find a good coffee. Watered down, flavorless and cold coffee so far. I literally drove to a Starbucks just to get a coffee. Which is annoying. Until.,.,drum roll..Looney Bean. Not only is it warm, cozy and quaint but the coffee was one of the best I have had, including the dreamy drip in London. I opted for the Guatemalan black with a dash of cinnamon. So so good. The views are magical and they have a backyard to sit or play. While I was there a snowball fight was the excitement. It's not just a kitschy spot it's a legit coffee house/cabin. Go here and skip the others. read more

This hole in the wall coffee shop is super cute! The drinks are delicious (I'm not a coffee drinker, but the rest of my group is)and we ended up going daily. I had the Green Monkey (matcha, banana, milk of choice) and the other drinks purchased were chia with expresso and bees knees. I also highly recommend their bacon, egg, cheese and pesto aioli, super amazing! The service is very friendly, easy going and knowledgeable. They can get busy and parking can be difficult to find in the area but sooooo worth it. read more

Husband and I ordered coffee and an ocean roll each (can be warmed and highly suggest). Hey YELPMISTERS, This is hands down my favorite downtown Bend coffee hangout all year round and especially in the warmer months as the outdoor seating is spectacular on the Deschutes river, Drake Pond. Tables, chairs, and a large lawn area. Kind of a hangover heaven for those who need it !!! Coffee: Excellent care in all espresso drinks, good beans, and fast. Location: Pretty good old school Bend, inside and out. If you get there off peak or tourist hours, you can find a spot for your coffee and laptop. Nothing fancy or modern, just comfortable. Food: Not really sure but they have enough pastries and other stuff to chow on. I don't order much other than cappuccino or a Dirty Hippie with an occasional scone. Service & Staff: Excellent, happy, friendly, and full of fun. Price: Very reasonable considering the location and the amount of staff on hand to provide great service. Looney Bean is tops for location location location! Right on the river with patio seating and a beautiful inviting lawn. Good cold brew. A bit watered down so only 4 stars. I was surprised by this since they roast their own beans. A splash of hemp milk added some flavor. Lady with long dark hair was not very welcoming or engaging but oh well. She was prompt with my order and I was in my way out the back for to enjoy the sunshine. Cute interior with plenty of seating if weather needs to keep you inside. Yes, there's a patio back there -- and a great one. The first few times I passed this place I thought it was only a walk-up, walk-away kind of coffee places -- because there's often a line both to order and pick up. I hadn't realized there's a cute inside (that should be opening up again post-covid soon) and a simply wonderful terrace/patio (it's grass so I'm not sure if "patio" technically applies) with sturdy tables and a superb view of the river and largely in the, at least when I visited, desperately needed shade. Even though the service is insanely slow, the riverfront outdoor area is amazing. In fact, Looney Bean gets two stars just for the location. Sadly, that means only two stars for the remainder of the experience. The coffee is fair (aka, an improvement on Starbucks), but the service is sloth like, and "special" orders (think "no foam") are beyond the capacity of the baristas (two days in a row). That being said, there are few places to enjoy a cup of Joe with a view like Looney Bean! read more

Bend has no shortage of great coffee shops, but Looney Bean has to be one of the cutest! Did I come here mostly because my sister has a dog named Looney? Absolutely. But one sip of my pumpkin pie dirty hippie and I was hooked! I love that they use actual pumpkin purée in their drinks, and the pumpkin+chai+espresso was heavenly. I also had the killer bee, with honey and cinnamon and the perfect amount of cayenne to warm you up! I also shared a red pepper and feta croissant, which was very tasty. They have cozy seating inside as well as a roomy outdoor seating area next to the water. Like most places in Bend, dogs are welcome outside! read more

This place was absolutely adorable but it is tiny. When we went, there wasn't much food left but the drinks were the star of the show. I got a pumpkin pie latte with espresso whipped cream and it was amazing. My bf got a chai latte and that was super rich and flavorful. Looney Bean has "The Lumber Jack" my favorite summertime coffee, to the extent I find myself daydreaming about when I'll be able to get another one in my hands. I sub Oat Milk for reg. and have it in blended form. It's pure creamy, decadence. In the back the large lawn with it's riverside side seating makes Looney Bean one of my go to places to meet up with friends, or an outing with my kiddos. read more

LB was the first coffee shop I visited when I arrived in Bend three years ago. It was a quaint little coffee house with personable baristas who served tasty drinks. I found their riverside patio and lawn to be a peaceful sanctuary. Over the last 1.5 years (slightly before the pandemic) the service began to drop off as new baristas replaced the old. The pandemic took a toll on us all to be sure, but it seems Looney Bean has spiraled down when other coffee houses like Crow's Feet and Spoken Moto have risen up, weathered the storm, and emerged stronger. Each time I visit Looney Bean, hoping it will recover, I experience something like today's debacle and I am let down again.... I ordered two drip coffees--- simple enough. Per their protocol, I waited patiently outside their newly adapted to-go window. As the folks in line behind me began to receive their drinks, one after another, I was puzzled. A drip coffees in a barista's world is like pouring a draft beer to a bartender: a simple transaction which requires 10 seconds, and the flick of a wrist. After fifteen minutes, approx. 3-4 guests behind me in line walked away happily w/ drinks and so I inquired with the gal at the window (blond hair/ glasses) about mine. Her tone was nasty and passive-aggressive and a little uncomfortable. I had never seen the other two baristas before. However, they appeared new to me and perhaps it was a day where learning was causing frustration, which boiled over into hostility. I really cannot be sure. Had she simply smiled and apologized I would have walked away content. Instead she offered up more passive-aggressive commentary about how some drinks take longer than others. Didn't exactly jive with a couple of simple coffees. It was not particularly busy at LB. Had the barista simply forgotten my order? Had the drip coffee run out? Was there some switch-a-roo that was missed? I really don't know. At minimum take some ownership, apologize and make it right. Don't exude nastiness to the guests who are patiently waiting. I am easy to forgive, if you communicate with me politely. In a pandemic world, we are asked to tip in advance of service. Baristas and bartenders work hard so I've never questioned the routine. I think my family and friends will take a little break from LB. For now we will choose to visit the other coffee houses around town for a while. I hope they can find their way back to being the place they once were. By all accounts for many years before we moved to town. Good luck. read more

Possibly the best summer coffee shop ambiance ever! On a hot September day, the sign out front of the shop advertising strawberry frozen lemonade seemed very inviting. We were so surprised to walk into the shop and find anther door that went back outside onto a lovely, shady lawn beside the river! I was a little disappointed that the lemonade was Costco Kirkland lemonade and not homemade, but the frozen drink was indeed very tasty. We sipped our lemonade and actually lingered awhile on the lawn, something we seldom do on trips. Hopefully I'll get to return on a future trip and sample more things from the menu. read more

Went with the signature iced dirty hippie this morning. Barrista/cashier said espresso machine was just repaired and shots were coming out slow? I asked r u able to pull a shot and she replied they were and it just takes awhile. Got my dirty hippie and could taste no coffee in it. I went back to same barrista/cashier to give my feedback and she said she was real sorry and they r just shutting the espresso machine down. Barrista offered no substitute drink, refund or anything. I guess my drink was experimental r&d of their broken machine at my expense. Promptly went to higher rated coffee shop down the street where the barrista knew how to pull a shot and not jerk a customer around. read more
