You know what you're getting into when you buy a used car, right? You know that when you look at a used car, even from a dealership, you gotta make sure either you or someone you know is well versed in vehicle anatomy and maintenance, right? It seems a lot of past reviewers don't know how to buy used cars. Or don't understand that you get what you pay for when you buy one. Want a car with no problems whatsoever? Buy new. My 2005 Chevy Avalanche, a 13 year old truck, with a 141,000 miles, is not absolutely perfect... It has a tiny bit of wheel well rust, and they will be ordering a part under warranty because the check engine light came on. No big deal, they're fixing it for me for free. But... It was $7150 before tax and title. These trucks were $37,000 new in 2005, or $47,000 in today's dollars. What the [bleep] do you expect when you're paying **85% LESS** than a new vehicle?! It's gonna have problems. But they're gonna be fixable. That's the tradeoff when you buy a used car. The fact that this has to be explained to people in 2018 is baffling. Jay and Kelly are AWESOME. When we asked them to fix it they said we must have had the accident there is dirt under the wheels. My son has had the car for 2 weeks and hasn't even had a fender bender. Please read before going to this place! So I had nothing but a good experience with this place since buying my car there. However as soon as I got my car I brought it to my mechanic to put it on his lift to check it out. The only thing he found wrong was a bad inner/outer tire rod end. There was a warranty for 30 days/1000 miles. I called, made an appointment, dropped the car off. No problem there. They called me back saying nothing was wrong. My mechanic called them back asking if they could check it again. They became very unprofessional calling the mechanic a sh***y mechanic (my mechanic then lost it at that point). They refused to fix the part, which would be an hour time (if that) and a total of $60 to replace this part. My mechanic is now replacing this part himself because it is a safety issue. Please think twice about going to this place. I fully support mom and pop's shops 100% but this is one I would advise not going to. ****update**** March 25 Brought my car to get an oil change a month after of having it. My mechanic has noticed that my front diff is leaking and my other tire rod (inner and outer) is shot. I will now be spending more money on this car. This place is a joke! Do not buy from them! My brother just purchased a 2005 Nissan Maxima from Watertown Auto Sales and has had NOTHING but problems! I am not the type to leave 1 star reviews, but this has been an absolutely awful experience for a first car. The guy was so nice and friendly when we went for the test drive and the things that were broken were "fixed" before he took delivery of the car... which is interesting because the sunroof that was broken on the test drive still doesn't work properly, and from there on out it has been even more of a nightmare!! First the battery which was most likely the original battery died... paid $140.00 to replace that. Secondly his starter just crapped out, so paid to replace that... $450.00 later.... Now the car is making a nasty grinding noise and leaking power steering fluid like crazy! Will be paying to fix that too. When we brought it down to be serviced for the battery because it was still under warranty the brake lights were staying on ALL the time and killing the battery. The guy at the lot honestly told us that's a safety feature and he was unable to fix it... interesting because for $30 the brake light switch fixed the problem... just another out of pocket expense. Then they tried to blame the sound system my brother had in the car for the problems and said they would not cover any repairs... last time I checked my sound system in my car never caused me starter or power steering issues. Basically my brother bought a lemon for this first car... I would avoid this place honestly... there's a row of dealerships on Straits Turnpike before you get to this place and you would be better off going to one of them. read more

Looking for a van for work, I looked at auto-ad magazines, visited websites and even read Yelp reviews etc....either they were too far or prices were in left field for what I had to spend. I wanted a business that was close by ( in case of problems),I had enough of pushy BSers that didn't have my best interest in mind , only their bottom line . Althought not the biggest used car dealer in my area, I can, after dealing with Mr. Grenier ( Jay), attest that he was honest with many of the questions I had for him. I ended up purchasing a 2009 van for work at a pretty decent price back in June of this year ( it is serving its purpose very well ) ! I will be looking for a pickup truck in the near future and will definitely consider WASs again !!! read more

He fixed a few extra cosmetic things I asked him to with no problem and was very professional. The car is amazing and I had my own mechanics check it out within the 30 day warranty and they found it to be in great shape. His receptionist Michelle is very personable and took my many calls and questions and remained professional at all times. new experience, new review. Needed to bring the van back in for service which was covered under their "best bang for your buck" warranty. They had the vehicle 12 days this time. They had to send it out to another shop to do the work. No communication during the 12 days except when we called around day 9 and asked what was going on. Got the vehicle back. The hood was scratched and full of grease, there was grease all along the driver side door, the inside looked like it was ransacked. The registration and all the paper work that was in the glove box was all over the floor AND the inner fender was missing! They send their vehicles to Quality Auto in Waterbury. Obviously Jay and everyone at Watertown Auto have no Quality checks in place. I do want to note that we've had this van just barely two months and each time we've had to make a payment the van has been at Watertown Auto for problems. Please seriously consider purchasing from anyone other than Watertown or Quality Auto. And a note about their warranty, the warranty covered $410 and we had to pay out of pocket $298. We also got a "tune up" done by another service center during the month and that cost $400. Make sure you read what you are covered for and just don't assume its a good deal. I purchased a 2009 Mazda 3. I did the transaction by phone from Albany NY. Drove 2 1/2 hrs to pick up the car. The interior wasn't as clean as I would have liked. I was told that the car was put thru a rigorous ### point safety inspection etc.. new brakes tires etc. They give a 30 day warranty. I took the vehicle to Firestone to have the NY State Inspection done. It failed due to one leaking strut and the other blown out. The drivers side door lock also didn't work. The tires weren't new, they were snow tires, and the brakes weren't new either. When I called to discuss I was told that I would need to bring the car down (2 1/2 hr drive) to have their mechanic look at the front end. Like I am going to now trust the person who couldn't identify leaking struts... I was also told this wan't the first time this has happened. I was given an estimate of over $600 from Firestone to do the work, I emailed the invoice to Jay Grenier(owner) and asked that they split the cost as the drive down and wait would be counter productive for me... which I thought was fair. After 1 conversation with Jay, he apparently didn't like what I had to say... stated I was shaking him down for the difference of what he offered of $207.18 and $300. I emailed them and asked them to send me the $207.18 as I would like to wash my hands of them...Then he emailed me the following.. " After a recent conversation I'd like to verify this work is in fact needed. Please call the office to schedule appointment. Have no doubt your feelings are also ours. But we will honor our warranty." Bottom line. don't expect anything more than the bare minimum. Don't buy from out of state.. and don't buy without having the car meticulously inspected by a real mechanic. read more

Interesting to see so lots of poor reviews with so many concerning the owner Jay (Jason). Let me share my story... I purchased a Subaru Legacy through Lisa for my daughter in December 2016. First, the good news. My daughter, who remember didn't pay for the vehicle, is very happy. The car was (and is) in good shape and the previous owners had obviously treated it well. On the downside, it had 140k on the clock. This is important because, while Subarus are often good for multiple 100Ks, the timing belt must be changed around the 120k mark. As a result, I made an offer conditional on the dealership's guarantee that the timing belt had been changed. I was told it hadn't happened (Lisa's actual words: "...we must assume the timing belt has not been changed...") In the negotiations that followed, I actually increased WAS's own offer to include a timing belt change. In the final deal, this factor was crucial, and central. Post-purchase, two weeks later, I had the car assessed. Guess what? There'd been no timing belt change. The belt in the car showed signs of wear consistent with a change about 20k ago - in other words, the timing belt hadn't needed to be changed by Watertown Auto Sales (quite contrary to Lisa's advice: "...we must assume the timing belt has not been changed..."). I called WAS and asked to speak with the owner Jay. He wasn't available. To Melissa, who took my message, I wondered why I'd paid for an upgrade that they'd not performed. I was told to expect a call back. None came. I emailed 6 hours later, and was told Jay was too tied up to "...speak with me this week, although he'd like to meet you next week to discuss." I know what you're thinking. Idiot me, huh? Me too! I guess I expect the best out of people too often - but read on... When the following week Jay and I met (witnessed by Lisa and Melissa) I found him to be horribly condescending. "My time is important too, I need to keep you waiting 15 minutes while we wait for Lisa," he told me, for instance. Strangely, only seconds before Lisa was right there, with us, in the dealership office, and knew what I'd come to discuss. Better yet, Jay's insistence that my concerns were "facetious". Clearly, he was taking things personally. He said he KNEW throughout the deal that timing belt had recently been changed ("I bought this car; I knew the timing belt was good") then deflected my concerns about his disingenuousness within the deal. Disingenuousness that had cost me about $500. He knows it, too. Which is maybe why he droned on for an age about some Albanian truck deal (seriously!) before I offered him a chance to put our deal right - otherwise, I said, the last car I bought from WAS would be the last car I bought from WAS. Jay answered he wasn't interested in my future business. Astonishing. Here's my take. Everyone knows its caveat emptor. But the reason you buy from a dealer is they offer surety a private seller cannot. You pay for that surety. And the dealer benefits by establishing a customer relationship that builds future business. At Watertown Auto Sales, Jay purposefully severed that relationship ("I'm looking at the future of this company, not the past," he told me.) My experience shows WAS is not a company with a long view. I urge you to consider this, and the other reviews on this page, before you spend many hard-earned dollars on a purchase. As for me, I'll never go back, and I cannot recommend them. read more

DO NOT BUY A CAR HERE! I'm writing this a few years after the fact, I bought my first car here when I was 17 (I'm now 20). The first sign should've been the test drive, the back door, after being opened, would not shut and had to hold it closed the whole way back to the dealership. They had assured my mom and I it was safe and would go through a safety check before I came to pick it up. Turns out the solution to that was making sure the door didn't open AT ALL (which I didn't realize until a few days later). Anyways, the car literally broke down ON THE WAY HOME from the dealership in the middle of route 44. We were furious and had it towed back to the dealership. The owner then proceeded to yell at my clearly distressed mother over the phone because he sent A MINOR to drive home in a car that clearly wasn't safe, with undisclosed issues. The owners wife (thank goodness someone had some sense here) talked him down and he agreed to fix the issue as long as we didn't post a bad review and would instead post a good one. On top of this, after going through a car wash a few months after, the paint on the drivers side door was stripped away because of the power washing. When getting it fixed they explained that the last person to paint the door did not paint it correctly when patching the paint on the car. This place is a complete scam and they honestly do not care about the safety or quality of the vehicles they are selling. This dealership reminds me of the sleazy dealership out of the movie "Matilda". DO NOT LISTEN TO THESE GOOD REVIEWS, DO NOT BUT A CAR HERE. read more

I purchased a BMW5X on 08/27/15 and it has been a nightmare! 2 days after purchasing it I drove my daughter to McGill in Montreal on my way back the car was smoking so badly that they stopped me at custom and I had to wait that it cooled down. I Went to the next gas station and added 10W30 in it, twice during the trip. On the next Monday I was in their office. I told them there was a major issue with the engine that was burning oil and I was willing to take another SAFE car on the lot or I wanted my money back. They told me that it was absolutely not a problem of leak and it was most probably an issue with the oil change as this type of car needs synthetic oil and they had done the oil change with really cheap oil. They changed the oil. 18 days passed I barely use the car just to go in town and drove my son to school. Small trips, less than 5 miles. On September 26th I had a meeting in NYC when I arrived to the city park the car was smoking again, white heavy smoke from the exhaust. I Could not get inside the garage so bad it was. I phoned to them again, they said Jay was out and he would be back in couple of hours and return the call. I had to call back myself 4 hrs later. On Monday 9/28 I went back to the garage and Jay started to deny the pre-existing problem. (Never met someone so dishonest that can look straight into your eyes this way!) He walked to my car look at the mileage and told me textually: "warranty is OFF you are on your own. Do not come ever on my property, phone my business or write e-mail to me". On 10/1 went to Murray's in Woodbury to the Emission center as I just had received the license plates. The car failed the emission test for 2 things the first one is P1434 which is leak pump for evaporation system and the second most important for the white smoke coming out of the exhaust which has been diagnosed with valves leakage. Cost of the repairs $19,000 basically a new engine! I filed a customer business complaint towards the Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen for denying to address a pre-existing major problem that could lead to the safety of the driver and occupants. I filed as well to BBB (Better Business Bureau) and DMV ( customer complaint form K35). Next if no cooperation will be the Court. This is a fraudulent business and it needs to be addressed so we can avoid in the future other cases like this. Totally unacceptable! read more

I was optimistic that Watertown Auto had the truck I was looking for. I called several times asking about their 1998 Chevy Silverado c/k1500. The dealer was happy to tell me that the truck was a V8 5.3L Silverado with a 7.5 plow and with 95,000 miles. I was sold and made a 2 hour trip from my home. I arrived at the dealership and no one was around to talk to. Once I went inside the dealer asked me if I needed help and I said yes, telling him I was interested in the 1998 Silverado. He said he would show me as soon as the truck came "back", Apparantly the mechanic drove another co-worker to their house in the truck. I waited for 20 minutes and saw the truck pull in. They took the plow off, and as they were busy removing it, I saw the frame had been cheaply repaired for rust, by spraying the body with bedliner, and not removing the oxidation first, a wonderful way to have the frame snap in half. I asked them why so many wires were dangling from the body, and he said they were grounding wires and had no purpose, but neither do the sending units, if we're going to play that game. He then let me test drive, but before we left, the genius mechanic said the ball shifter rusted off and it could not driven. The even smarter dealer said "oh let's zip tie the shifter!". So Pablo the mechanic got underneath and zip tied the shifter. I hopped inside "so happy to drive it" and the mechanic came along. I asked the mechanic what he knew about the truck and he said "nothing" because he was just hired. Since I couldn't shift the transmission without the quality made ball shifter zip tie falling off I couldn't test the 4x4. I pulled back in the parking lot and reflected about what I just got myself into, and how stupid I felt for believing the owner of the dealership. I told the dealer that the truck had a lot of problems that were answered and unanswered. I also said that when I called I asked for information on a FUCKING SILVERADO, AND WHEN I LOOKED AT THE BADGE ON THE DOOR IT SAID CHEYENNE. He said that the person updating the website must have over looked it. HOW DO YOU OVERLOOK THE TYPE OF VEHICLE YOU ARE SELLING, ARE YOU REALLY THAT FUCKING STUPID????? He then said that he was selling it as a plow truck and that the plow was worth a few grand. I cocked my head and said "really?" because you offered me $500 to take it off. He then told me he was sorry for wasting my time. I told him I felt sorry for the Jabroni bought from his dealership, and very sorry for the person who would be suckered into buying this complete piece of shit. So, what we have learned today is that technically you can buy a car from these guys, but be warned, they're complete scum bags who don't know the fucking difference between a Chevy Silverado and a Chevy Cheyenne. Originally I had given watertown auto 5 stars. That was the day my warranty was up. During my warranty they did fix every issue I had, as they are legally obligated to do. By the time I got my car back after the last time they fixed it my warranty was over. Four days later my engine blew and my 2007 rav4 died on the highway at 10pm with my son in the car.We were stuck till 11:30 pm till AAA got there, then had to get a taxi home which was an hour drive. I bought a new car because I needed a safe car which I believe the car is but the dealership is shady.... I was told some belt came loose.... you think they would have double checked my car before giving it back to me. So the dealership fixed it for a good chunk of money but 3,000 less then toyota quoted me. Okay cool. 2 weeks after that I get an oil change and I'm told by toyota the right axel is broken, the boot is ZIP tied together?!, and fluid is leaking everywhere. Awesome! Thank you watertown auto for a piece of metal that doesn't work! Never again will I go there! My 12 year old sable had less problems in the 2 years I owned it. :( read more

I called when I got home they said bring it back next day. I took it back they said they fixed it 5 hr later I headed home. Before I got 15 miles from my house it cam back on. I called they said bring it back next day. after 6 hr they came told me they would rent a car for me to go home well 3 days later it was ready. I went and got it on the way home the front end started shaking bad. Got home they said take it back I did it was a ball joint and they said I had to pay, well I told them give me my car back problem was they sold it well I got there repair number and hey ask why I wrote there number down and I told them I was going to report them. I was talking to a co worker about cars we've previously owned, and after discussing my experience to him I had at Watertown Auto Sales, I felt intrigued to create a Yelp account and leave a review of this business in hopes that others won't make the same mistake I made. Back in 2007 I purchased an 2001 Acura TL with a little over 100,000 miles on it from them and was informed that they would do a full check of the car. I drove off the lot and to my parents house to show them the car. So with the family in the car, I go to start it and.... Nothing. Dead battery!! Seriously, it was like 45 minutes after I left the lot that the battery died. I call them to tell them what happened and they offer to replace it with a battery from another car in the lot. Not even worthy of a new battery. When I go there to get the battery replaced I ask whatever happened to the full car check and I receive a HUGE attitude from I believe his name was Mike. I give him the keys and he accuses me of throwing them at him and says "you don't want to play that game with me!" He had his hand out and I underhand tossed them to him. At this point I'm beyond frustrated having just purchased a car with a dead battery only to have it replaced with another used battery and then this Mike character accusing me of throwing keys at him. The guy was a complete scum bag. Beware! If that wasn't bad enough, 3 months after I bought the car the engine light goes on and a loud ticking noise starts coming out from under the hood, I take it to an auto body shop and I'm informed that the car needs a new engine. I get the engine replaced and about 2 months later the car starts having power failure. The car completely shut off while I was driving on the highway. Had it towed to a REAL dealership and traded that P-O-S in for a brand new car. Stay away from this shady business, it was the worst car buying experience I have ever had. I hope to never see any of the characters I dealt with at Watertown Auto Sales in public, especially Mike... It literally took everything in me to not knock him out. read more
