Today, I went to Watertown Mutual for the used car check and I am impressed with their service. First of all, they accommodated my service request on the same day. Thanks to George. After they performed their checks, Mike went over all the inspection points clearly and pointed out where they identified the minor issues. They said it would take 90 minutes but they completed their work by 60 minutes. Mike was also kind enough to come to our car and explain the usage of some of the features as we asked questions. Came in to get my car inspected for registering my car and instead of doing the inspection and not telling me that if need another inspection anyways after getting registered they made sure I knew this and didn't have to pay for two inspections. Gas station is great, the garage forget it! Stopped in to get an inspection sticker and the mechanic would not look at my car because he said that the license plate could not be read. I have one of those old plates, green letters and numbers, and none of them are faded or illegible. He told me that I needed to go the registry and get new plates for my vehicle. I told him that I never heard of such a thing and he repeated that he would not inspect my car unless I got new plates. Ended up going to another inspection station and they had me in and out in 15 minutes with a new inspection sticker. read more

This review is 25 yrs overdue. I was reminded yesterday on just how good and honest my mechanic Paul is. I took my two Honda's here for many yr's and Paul helped me actually drive one until I reached over 250,000 miles! Lol. He knew I was struggling through nursing school at the time and he would go above and beyond to get me used parts to keep the cost down. I don't think I would've ever made it to class If it wasn't for him! I have since upgraded to an Audi 2018 A4. After being raked over by the dealership, I decided to get my car out of there and take it to my talented and honest mechanic Paul. He is so knowledgeable and was able to explain everything going on to me. Well he fixed my car up at a significantly lower price and did an amazing job! I couldn't possibly say enough good things about this shop. Although he unfortunately doesn't do major work on Audi's, he was able to put in new front rotor's and now it runs perfectly. My car brakes were in bad shape. I had depended on a major Watertown tire chain place (beginning with S) in Watertown for my repairs. I discovered over the years that they had substituted inferior parts for the premium ones I thought I had paid for. On a tip I brought it to Watertown Mutual where Paul and Mike looked it over. Mike did the work. The tire chain store had installed cheap rebuilt calipers that were chewing up my rotors and pads. Over the years they would replace one seizing caliper with another seizing one. Mike was very professional and identified clearly why he had to basically revamp my whole braking system. Well, 3 calipers, 4 rotors, and 4 sets of pads later, my car finally brakes like it did over 10 years ago. The price was right too. I paid almost the same amount for an honest 4 wheel brake job as I did at that chain for a "deluxe" 2 wheel brake job. This gas station just converted from a SUNOCO to a Mutual Gas Station. I went here to get my annual emissions inspection done. This was my second time getting my inspection sticker here and the mechanic who completed the inspection is always so pleasant! He is thorough with the inspection, updating you with any problems along the way, but still manages to get you out of there as quickly as possible. While I was waiting for my inspection, I chatted it up with the guy pumping gas. It was a REALLY hot summer day so we complained about the lack of air conditioning in both of our workplaces. He was really friendly and kept me company while I waited for my inspection. When somebody would come to get their gas pumped, I noticed he always greeted them with some version of "Hello. How are you today?" I know getting an inspection sticker is not really about the experience, but this was definitely the most stress-free one I have had in a while! read more

Yes, I am reviewing a gas station... I first went here for my inspection sticker, was already into the next month of course, and had no appointment. They looked busy, but after a short wait squeezed me in and I got the sticker. The guys were all very pleasant. The most recent visit was not a happy one, but that was not their fault. What I thought was minor damage from driving over a curb turned out to be serious subframe wreckage. When I called to inquire about the diagnosis, the mechanic was incredibly empathetic and helpful. He told me to call my insurance company, and recommended a body shop. Then for his time, he charged me...nothing. Really. The gas and service station have been there for about forty years, so they obviously have been doing something right. I'll definitely be going here from now on. read more

I've been to Watertown Mutual for several routine repairs and also for annual inspections. I originally went here because I live in the neighborhood and it was convenient, but I've kept coming back because they always do a good job. I never feel like I'm being taken for a ride, so to speak. Recently brought my car in to replace the brake pads, and they both quoted me a good price and let me know which sets of pads definitely needed to be replaced and which have more life left, rather than telling me I have to replace all four. I can't say enough good things about this place. I only wish I had found it sooner after moving to Watertown. This review is overdue. Last fall I took in my 10 year old Acura TSX after it was making a noise. The owner quickly isolated it was a leak in the manifold. After telling me the work would be $1500 to fix it, he followed up with a recommendation for an exhaust repair place near by that could do the same work for only $300 since they have different tools. I ask you - what service repair store does that? Honesty and integrity are getting to hard to find. I recently purchased a new vehicle and was more than happy to bring it to Watertown Mutual for my first oil change. read more

Got my car inspected here recently and these guys are the most pleasant around! The gentleman who did my inspection fixed my windshield washer hose and didn't even mention it. I noticed it as I drove away (droplets of water and all) -- too late to thank him. So I'm saying THANK YOU now! You rock! This review is long overdue.... Paul and crew have saved me on more than one occasion, most recently on a failed inspection (from a different garage). This other garage in Waltham was just looking for ways to gouge me... he told me I needed new tires, new rear brakes, none of which I needed. I drove my car over to Paul in Watertown, I didn't have an appointment but they were gracious enough (as always) to squeeze me in. They fixed what was wrong with my car (less than $100 worth!) & had me out of there (with a Passed inspection sticker) shortly thereafter. Finding an honest, reliable mechanic, especially when you're a woman, is not easy. They've definitely earned my trust over the years. If they tell me something is wrong with my car, I believe them. It's really nerve wracking to try and find a good mechanic in the area that will not rip you off (especially as a woman). This place is great - they always do a great job and are reasonably priced. They are incredibly honest as well - I once heard something fall off of my car while I was driving and brought it here - they told me that it appeared to be the heat shield, which is not an issue worth fixing on my (old) car. They could have easily taken advantage of my lack of knowledge and they didn't, which i think is a rare and incredibly valuable attribute. They will also try to give you a heads up if it looks like something might have to be replaced soon, which is significantly more pleasant than being surprised when you bring your car in for an oil change and something needs to be replaced immediately. read more

Watertown Mutual is great: they're very friendly, straightforward, and do great work on my car. When I took my car in for an oil change and asked about what kind of maintenance my car would need, the mechanic walked me through what might help over the next year-- what the costs were, what was definitely necessary, what I could put off, and what was more or less a good idea but not essential. I don't commute in my car, so I never hit the mileage they give you for an oil change, so I asked him if I should go by miles or date; he told me I could give it six months, rather than three. He could've just said "no way, absolutely come in every three months," but he didn't. My husband also took his car in for a weird squeaking noise, and the mechanic took a look and oiled what needed oiling, no charge for time or anything. I can't say enough great things about these guys. Everyone I've dealt with here, both in the garage and pumping gas, is an A-plus dude. When a repair needs to be made, the price is fair and they get it done in the time they tell you -- no $200 estimate for something you know involves an $18 part and 20 minutes of work, and no waiting all day for something that's supposed to take an hour. Best of all, they don't invent things that need to be fixed when I leave my car there for other things. I know enough about belts, hoses, brakes, etc. to know when a mechanic is trying some funny business, and these guys never pull those stunts -- not even when my wife drops her car off. If you live or work nearby, take your car here for service, repairs or gas. Period. read more

Watertown Mutual sounds like a bank, but it's actually a gas station and auto repair shop. A family member recommended them so I brought my older Nissan in to diagnose a strange noise that sounded like it was coming from the front suspension. It turned out that the suspension was going to need replacement at some point in the future, but it was still working properly and would last quite a bit longer. Rather than trying to get me to do the replacement now just to get the business, the gentleman explained the situation and recommended I come back if the noise gets worse. It's been almost a year and it"s still running great. They seemed very honest and when we need to have the work done we will definitely come back to Watertown Mutual. Auto repair places can get a very bad name from a few bad apples but Watertown mutual is definitely one of the good apples. read more

Don't confuse Paul's Repair w this place (the head mechanics name is Paul, the other guy is kind of an asshole). Paul is honest w great prices. Fast. Had my inspection sticker and tune up done, he fixed my window that was slipping at no extra charge! Thought I needed a new fuel pump, but he cleared the lines and it cost 1% of what I'd feared!! I can't say enough about Watertown Mutual (formally known as Watertown Sunoco). I first went to John and Paul (the owner and mechanics) two years ago when I was having a horrible time passing inspection - 5 tries - I'd never heard of them prior to that. Since then I'm a loyal customer. Each and every time they are upfront, try to provide the most economic solution and ensure that you fully understand what the issue is with your vehicle. I recently went in for what we thought was going to be a fairly standard ball bearing replacement and unfortunately ended up having a more complex transmission problem. This was not their specialty and the gave me an outstanding recommendation for a transmission specialist. Prior to the referral, they spent quality time trying to confirm whether I did indeed need a new ball bearing and when it was determined to be more serious, they still never charged me a dime for their time even thought they easily could have. They even felt bad that the issue was worse than we'd initially thought. These are two trustworthy and friendly mechanics who really know their stuff, who have worked with my extremely limited budget and who aren't afraid to say that this is beyond their scope and aren't above providing a referral to get you what you need. The latter only increases my trust in both of them. I will definitely return for my next standard car repair/tune up and annual inspection. read more

I owe Watertown Mutual an apology. I posted a very negative review of them a week ago as they charged me a fair sum to change a lightbulb on my Subaru Legacy. The new lightbulb was necessary to pass inspection. They replied to my post asking me to call them and offering to repay me my money. I called my Subaru dealer in the meantime and was told the bulbs are indeed very difficult to change. The whole front fender has to be removed. The Subaru folks said for a small garage which is unaccustomed to the operation (and can't pass on excess labor charges elsewhere) I was not overcharged. Apologies to John and his crew. I have been going there for years. Both John and Paul do a great job on my 3 cars whenever I need servicing and repair. The quality is excellent, the prices are reasonable, and their service is guaranteed. My family is very important to and I trust them to always do quality work on my cars. One of my cars had a recall, so I took it to the dealer and they found $6,000 worth of repairs (nothing with the recall part). I took it to John and Paul...after inspecting the dealer's list, some of the things I didn't need; and those that needed work, we already knew from the last inspection.
