When I need more help, I just head down to Ace. But I do like coming to Menards for a larger selection when I know exactly what I need and can ask around if I can't find it. And I usually can't find it on my own. But this place is huge and whatever you're looking for, it's almost always gonna be there.

This location of Menards is huge…read more It's two story with a cart escalator. I didn't even know such a thing existed. But, at good ol' Menards? It sure does. I have a love/hate relationship with most locations of Menards. The love: They have literally everything. Their stores are packed with anything you may need for any DIY project you're considering, whether it's an indoor plumbing project our an outdoor landscaping adventure--they've got everything you need. The hate part comes in with the same note--they are so large and have so much stock that it's always a bit hard to navigate. So, exemplary service comes in clutch. Unfortunately, in my opinion, that's where many locations of Menards falls short. Not so, at this location! We were on the hunt for something specific, enlisted the aid of a worker who walked us to the aisle and made sure we found what we needed. Hurray! Get to it!

Rather than look to see if they'd received any dimensions, the guy starts rolling on how they don't do these pieces ahead of time because sometimes people don't show up. Fine, I'd said that I figured they would wait until someone was there. Gave them my son's name, and the guy repeated himself about not doing it ahead of time, and if they had anything, it would be written down (waves his arm). He didn't even look, so I said my son's name again. He keeps repeating that they don't do it ahead of time. I told him again, he would have called with what he needed, and that he'd send someone to get it. So he asks me what he needs, and I said again, I don't know, he'd called a hardware store on Douglas with what he needed, and I'm not sure if I'm at the right one. He asks oh, he's not answering? Um, no, I don't even know what shape he wants, and he starts arguing over only doing 90 degree angles... well, squares & rectangles are 90 degree angles, and they're different shapes, and I didn't have a size. I was asking if they had the dimensions that my son called in so they could do it, or do I need to go to the other store. If he didn't remember the name, and there's no paper, the appropriate answer would have been, "No, sorry, we can't help you". Yes, I caught it the 1st time when he said that, and he's arguing about how I'm repeating myself. I was asking if they had the dimensions my son called in, it's a yes or no answer... And if that was a yes, now they can cut it now that I'm here, but no, the dude wants to go on repeat about not doing it ahead of time. So when I finally said I'm not arguing with him, he called ME ridiculous, when he clearly wasn't understanding my question, as a native speaker of Midwestern English. A pre-ORDER is not the same as pre-MADE. Just like you can't get a key cut without coming in with a key, fine, they won't cut fiberglass until the customer comes in to actually buy it... but did they get the request or didn't they? The answer would have been a yes or a no. Not an argument of what they do or don't make at the store ahead of time or not. Their customer service really stinks back there. The cashier was nice, though.

On a couple of occasions now I've talked with two of the techs in the back, an older guy and a young guy. They are very friendly and knowledgeable about a wide variety of equipment. I brought my manual start Toro Powerlite snowblower in for starting problems I could not resolve, plus the scraper bar was shot. They said my engine was pretty much worn out, so they put a good used engine on it from a machine that another customer had just left there. And this engine had an electric starter! So now I have a machine I can start manually or electrically. But wait, there's more. They thought the rubber paddles on mine were a bit worn out, so they put on a better used pair they had laying around FOR FREE! They also thoroughly cleaned the carb (by ultrasonic method) from the new (used) engine they put in, plus cleaned the fuel tank to ensure no starting problems. All told, they put a lot of work into my machine, including the engine with electric start, for under $200, which I thought was pretty good. It starts and runs like a champ now, just in time for today's snowstorm. Previously I'd only bought parts here a couple of times. And now I know their service/repairs are top notch too!

On our quest to find new switch plates and hardware for the kitchen, we stopped at this Neu's…read morelocation (there are two). It was "ok". There's a lot of selection here - a lot! The issue is that the space is small which makes it difficult to see everything as its all crammed in, floor to ceiling. The switch plates we had come to see were hung about 6' above the floor making it hard to see details. Honestly, it was just overwhelming and we soon gave up. Staff at this location was really helpful - we were greeted immediately and asked if they could help us find something. I appreciate that. Also, this gallery is connected to the main hardware store so you can get several errands done at once.

I mean it - pots, pans, utensils, weird serving dishes, prep stuff, bathrobes, coffee pots, giant potato mashers, chef shoes, cleaning supplies, huge deep fryers and Brewers Tupperware. Have you ever wished for one of those little silver dishes that restaurants put butter pats in? Look no further - it's yours for a mere $2. Second - staff is kind and helpful. They'll explain how it works to newbies and then let you go on your own personal voyage of discovery. Third - prices. They are good. A Wusthof chefs knife for $30? A sleeve of 100 jello shot cups for $1.29? Brewers Tupperware set of $15? All present and accounted for. They're a great source for catering/big party supplies too. They even sell paper chef hats (the tall, cylindrical ones) by the case - who doesn't need that? Fourth - Cooking classes. The fine people at Sur la Table have the balls to charge $70 per PERSON for a class. Boelter is $35 which includes a $25 credit to the store = $10 class. Most are taught by Michael Feker so that's going to be....entertaining. In conclusion, there's no better place to go when you need a turnip twaddler or whatnot for some obscure recipe. They'll have it and they'll have it at a fair price.
