I used Crown while living in Milwaukee, but the most memorable aspect for me was that it is a genuine hardware store. My father's family's business, begun in the mid-1930s, in western Pennsylvania was their 14 hardware stores that slowly dissolved from 1957 to 1962 as prepackaged goods and discount stores began their rise. I began "working" as a five-year old putting bicycles together for Christmas (inverting pedals and installing handlebars - not hard), then later weighing nails from kegs, cutting cast iron pipe and glass. I went to Crown to get a few parts to hook up my washer and dryer, and to get a few keys made. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They helped me figure out exactly what I needed despite the fact that I didn't think to bring measurements with me, and they did it all with a smile. The prices are pretty average, except for a few things, like batteries, that I found to be priced a little high. Overall, it was a great experience. I might go to Home Depot or Menard's in the future if I have the extra time to travel out to one, but even at slightly higher pricing than one of the big box hardware stores, the friendliness and knowledge of the staff here makes it worth the slightly extra money to not have to travel. read more

I MUST set the scene. I saw a sign as I was approaching the door, that read mask required. Which I had on. However, there was no sign that said customers will be served at the door. There are 2 gentleman talking at the door, as soon as I attempt to walk in, one of the gentleman tells me to back up, which I thought was extremely rude. Perhaps, one moment please? Then he says there is no entry, and proceeds to put down a wooden bar that was up until I attempted to walk in. I still proceeded to conduct business. I had a picture of a screw that I wanted to purchase, that was listed in millimeters. The guy at the door informed me he cant help me because it was not American measurements. He didnt give me the chance to point out that it was a M6 screw which was also listed on the picture. He continued to say no, as I attempted to explain the purpose of my visit. He was so resistant in his speech and body language, that I didnt follow up on the other items I intended to purchase. I said thank you and left. I went another local hardware store, 5 miles north and a teenaged store clerk assisted me with finding the correct screw and bolt, according to my picture. She was attentive and alert and actively listening to my concerns. A major difference from the lack of customer service I received at Crown. read more

Hands down best customer service of any hardware store. Very old school. Very. Have been there about 10 times and always have what I need.

I had to replace a piece from my shower and after going to two other stores, Crown had exactly what I needed. Normally I go to Bliffert Hardware, and I did but they didn't have what I needed, so the manager referred me to Crown. I happened to be going by Home Depot on my way to Crown so I thought I'd give it a shot and got the usual HD treatment. The part is fairly old so they had no idea what I needed and basically were suggesting that I might need to overhaul the shower to a newer setup. At Crown, which is a serious old-school hardware store, I took a number (make sure to do this on busy mornings) and it took the guy at the counter, Morris, about 5 seconds to determine what I needed after looking at the part I had. He also recommended an accessory piece that I hadn't even thought of (saving me a second trip) and I was on my way. Extremely knowledgeable is a total understatement here and I was also impressed with how upbeat the staff was even during a super-busy rush time. Price was about what I expected, when comparing to the other tow stores. I'll probably still use Bliffert's for day-to-day stuff because it's closer, but Crown will be my backup from now on. read more

Was told that Crown is the best place to get a new water heater. This is very true. I had a water heater installed six years ago by Crown and the installer was wonderful. My water heater stopped running two days ago and we could not get the pilot light restarted. I called a plumber and informed him of the brand. He came out and tried to start it and could not and then informed me that he did not repair this brand of heater. He could put a new one in for me for $1200 plus labor. I passed on that offer and called Crown again. My heater was just a few months out of warranty, but they worked with me and ended up putting in a new water heater for me for a very small charge. They warranty the heater for me, even though out of warranty, as long as I was willing to accept the new heater without a warranty. The warranty is normally six years, but for the $335. they charged me, I was more than happy to accept the new water heater for the price. It was an extremely fair price and I could not be happier. The installer, Jim is the same man that installed my last heater. He is a very mind mannered man that goes about his work and answered any questions I had. I would highly recommend Crown to anyone in need of a new water heater. Very pleasant experience and all of the staff I worked with was friendly and businesslike. Especially the installer, Jim. i just had the WORST customer service experience at crown! the man who waited on me was very condescending and rude. we're redoing our shower and i needed a few plumbing parts. when i said that the wall was ripped out behind the shower he actually asked me if i was sure. seriously? like i don't know the difference between a wall being there and not being there. maybe it's because i'm a woman, but at least humor me and give me the parts i need. i was just trying to support a local plumbing/hardware store. if you go, and i don't recommend it, avoid the small man with the napoleon complex at all costs. read more
