There are plenty of places in Boston that can make a good burger. What is much harder to find is a restaurant that feels like it couldn't exist anywhere else. I'd heard Waverly had one of the better burgers around, so when a friend was visiting for Sail Boston, we made the short trip off the more traveled streets to see if it lived up to the reputation. I'm glad we did. Waverly is tucked away on a quiet side street in Charlestown, and that's part of the charm. The dining room is small, warm, and comfortably lived in. Nothing about it feels manufactured. The decor has an old soul without feeling dated, almost like it has been there longer than it actually has. Later I learned that's intentional. The restaurant takes its name from the historic Waverly House, a grand Charlestown hotel from the 1800s, and was designed to capture the feeling of the neighborhood's historic brownstones rather than chase the latest restaurant trend. The room felt like it belonged to Charlestown. Most of the people inside looked like they could walk home after dinner. That's the kind of place I always hope to find when visiting a neighborhood, somewhere that serves the people who live there first, and everyone else second. We asked for a window table, and the staff happily accommodated us. It's a small gesture, but one that made us feel welcomed instead of processed. The burger justified the trip on its own. I added the sunny-side-up egg, but the real star was the bacon-onion jam. It pulled everything together without overpowering the beef. The burger itself was tender, the sesame brioche somehow managed to hold everything together, and I appreciated the choice of Vermont white cheddar and Grillo's pickles. Those aren't flashy ingredients, they're just the right ones. Seeing Downeast Cider on tap certainly didn't hurt either. What impressed me most wasn't that Waverly was trying to reinvent the neighborhood burger. It wasn't. It simply executed it exceptionally well, with enough confidence to let good ingredients and thoughtful choices do the talking. Charlestown wouldn't just lose a burger if Waverly disappeared. It would lose one of those neighborhood places that quietly makes a neighborhood feel like itself. You come for a well executed meal, but you leave feeling like you've experienced a small piece of Charlestown. Places like that are a lot harder to replace than a good menu. read more

Was in town for the marathon. Went a bit out of our way to visit this restaurant for brunch on Sunday, the day before the marathon as part of my carb loading plan for the race. I really, really, REALLY wanted pancakes. The website said brunch goes until 3. We get there at 2:50. They said they were no longer serving brunch and they've moved to their limited menu, because brunch ends at 3. You can imagine the puzzled look on our faces when they told us it ended at 3pm but it's still 2:50pm. They said we would have been fine if we were 5 minutes earlier. Weird that 2:45 is fine but 2:50 is not. We were annoyed, to say the least. But we were hungry, we didn't know what else was around, we needed to eat, and it already took us 30 minutes to get here in an Uber. Two guys came in after us, also before 3, who were also really excited for brunch. They too were shut down. We ordered off the limited menu. It was okay. It was fine. But that's not the point. If brunch ends at 2:45, then say it ends at 2:45. Don't say it ends at 3pm and then shut people down because it secretly closes earlier. I get that you guys want to switch the kitchen over and prep for dinner, but serve the food you say you're going to serve at the time you're going to serve them. Nobody came in after us and the other party that was also in before 3, so it's not like there was some never ending rush of people trying to get brunch. I also don't recall anyone else coming in before we left probably an hour. Poor communication and poor customer service. read more

As I walked in, the decor was eye catching, what put me off a bit was the loudness. Even on a Wednesday at 8 pm I could barely hear myself with all the conversations going on at the same time. You kind of get used to it but it was jarring from the quiet Charlestown neighborhood outside. Food was phenomenal, plating was aesthetically pleasing and service was attentive. As shown in the photos I got the Girl Dinner, I do wish the portion size of the pasta was a smidge bigger. This place is super cute and very yummy. The cocktails the service all top notch!! We really enjoyed. Started with the griddled banana bread - you need this. The butter is the jam. Like you need this. Bf had the chowder with pork belly , the lobster roll , a piece of French toast. I had the street corn quiche and the sweet potato croquettes. My peach cocktail was delish and the server was right about it. All was hot and super tasty. My friends and I had been trying to get into Waverly for a while and we were finally able to secure one for a 7pm dinner. I started with the Guava Lava because I was promised to receive real guava energy. It was good BUT if I had received this drink without knowing what it contained, I wouldn't have screamed GUAVA. Still cutesy for the picture. They do have a spicy version, but I chose peace because no. For my entrée, I ordered the Pappardelle con Burrata and that? was 9/10. The flavor was there, very satisfying. The pasta was a little more chewy than I'm used to, not in a bad way but noticeable. I did pick at a few other plates around the table haha. One of my friends ordered the Sweet potato croquettes, those were dangerously good with that aioli, and let me just say I'm not wild about sweet potatoes but those were good. I also tried Whipped feta. Super creamy and good along with the pita. Our server was good and attentive. The place wasn't loud so we were all able to talk to each other and hear each other speak. The only downfall was the parking situation. You will circle, question your decisions over and over again. Flew in town early and was starving! We decided to go to Waverly since the reviews were great, but I should have known going on a Saturday morning would be crazy! They were pretty much reserved when it came to seating but we didn't mind sitting at bar. The hostess was really nice and well prepared for the crowds. Food came out in a good amount of time and the small restaurant really seemed to flow and work well. We kept it simple when it came to the food. Pancakes were delicious, the house bacon was so thick my husband loved it and devoured it even tho it wasn't his! I had one of their seasonal pumpkin flavored iced coffees it was ok wouldn't get it again. Voted as one of the top places for Brunch in Boston according to some influencer on IG. I ABSOLUTELY love the interiors here. My Eggs Benedict eggs weren't poached/runny... again I only mention because if you like yours runny you will need to make a point to ask. Next up my friend ordered fresh fruit with yogurt... the bowl came with a 'bed' of yogurt and delicious tasting fruit on top, the issue is the yogurt cost $5.00 as a side... you definitely should get more than a smear LOL BTW everyone agreed that they enjoyed their meal once we got things straightened out. Other friend ordered scrambled eggs with steak and they were kind enough to accommodate this request however, we received egg whites not scrambled eggs with yolk included Whew! I was embarrassed as I usually do my research before selecting a location and this one kept falling short. The management came over and addressed everything and even gave us some of their outstanding banana bread... which I highly recommend. The drinks were good, but the bloody Mary was a little watery, and the breakfast martini had some residue from the jam that wasn't great for the last sip. For food, we LOVED the burger. The pork belly and grits were really good, sweet and spicy--eggs could have been a little runnier. The cacio e pepe fries were good, but $10 for a side of fries is kinda insane. I am pescatarian and they have plenty of things I could eat but also they handled a 10 person party so great. I called to book it and they were quick and kind. When we arrived we sat immediately. Our waitress was also handling other tables and was so patient and kind to all of us. She worked her tail off and had a wonderful attitude the whole time. The place is beautiful and the food is excellent. I took some photos mid meal but this is the place you're eating as soon as it hits the table. I've been waiting to try Waverly for a few years now and finally had the chance. It did not disappoint! It's a cozy spot to grab drinks and dinner, and the food was great. We tried a speciality martini to start and it was so delicious. Our waitress was also lovely and she had great recommendations - We started with the French onion soup dumplings, which were so unique and interesting. We also couldn't resist the bread and that was well worth it- it was so good! For dinner my husband tried the swordfish and that was definitely the winner of the night. I tried the buratta pasta and thought it was very good. My only complaint was that I sometimes found myself feeling a bit crammed at my table based on who was sitting next to us (and how loud they were). This place was so nice & cozy. I love the unique deals they do for certain weekdays. I went on a Monday, for their date night deal. We got the parker house rolls to start, these were probably my favorite part of the meal. The whipped honey butter and warm rolls was such an amazing combo. Sweet potato croquettes as our app, which I actually enjoyed despite not really liking sweet potatoes. Steak frites for the entree which were decent. Came here for a birthday brunch. We came on a Monday and it was quiet but very enjoyable. I am gluten free and was able to enjoy the eggs Benedict on gluten free bread. This is a true neighborhood favorite, as tables filled up quickly starting at 8 am--make a reservation! Our server, Stephanie G was attentive without being in-your-face. We sat at the street window, festooned in Christmas finery. The nearby gas fireplace provided a cozy warmth. There are seasonal hot beverages and brunch boozies, but we opted for a cappuccino and tea latte. Not sure the staff is familiar with a tea latte, as I was served a piping hot cup of milk and had to steep the tea bag. Typically, it's a brewed cup of hot tea, then add steamed milk (like for coffee). But it was fine. My delicious pork belly and grits was a substantial meal with a generous amount of protein --the broccoli rabe provided some balance and fiber! This place has potential, but the execution isn't there. The bun is a big issue on both the burger and chicken sandwich--too much bread compared to the filling, and it's not very tasty. The burger would benefit from being a smash burger, and the chicken is held back by an overpowering sauce; something simpler like mayo, honey mustard, or ranch would work much better. Ok, feel so guilty for awarding them but a 4 star review. So let's get that out of the way. Our table was in the middle of the room, was tiny and wobbled. And the place is very loud. Really need to nearly shout to be heard. So don't get the small table in the middle, sit at the bar, which is what we should have done. Now onto the good stuff -- the service and food. The service was excellent. Food and drinks moved quickly. Table was cleared as more food arrived. Spot on for great service. We ordered the pull apart Parker Rolls and the brussels sprouts. Both were amazing, best I've had of period! She ordered the steak frites and I the swordfish. Both were perfectly prepared and the portion size not too big and not too small. They change their menu every once in a while and the chef does a superb job. Some of our favorites that seem to be constant: - Parker house rolls with honey butter (to die for) - kale Caesar salad - mashed potatoes We've also had a couple of the fish dishes, they never disappoint. I have gone to Waverly twice and tried a variety of their dishes including Pull-Apart Parker House Rolls, Chicken & Dumpling Soup, Sweet Potato Croquettes, Tagliatelle Bolognese, Pappardelle con Burrata, Eggplant Milanese, Waverly Mac & Cheese, Bacon & Brussel Sprouts Hash, Ice Cream Chipwich, and Banana Sundae. Honestly, everything tasted really good, and I have no major complaints regarding the food. The Pull-Apart Parker House Rolls were soft, moist, and fluffy while paring well with the whipped honey butter. The Chicken & Dumpling Soup had a soothing taste and was seasoned well. I was not a huge fan of the texture of the gnocchi, but it was not a major issue. The Sweet Potato Croquettes did not have much of a sweet potato taste as the breading overpowered the flavor. The cheese was good though, so it was still an enjoyable appetizer. The Waverly Mac & Cheese looked small, but was dense in flavor, making it a very filling dish. The Bacon & Brussel Sprouts Hash was not bad. I enjoyed the brussel sprouts more as the bacon pieces were a bit fattier than I preferred. My favorite entree was the Tagliatelle Bolognese. The pasta noodles and sauce paired very well together. I loved the creaminess of the dish, and it was seasoned perfectly. The Pappardelle con Burrata was a solid runner-up, but the sauce was not as impactful. The Eggplant Milanese was crispy on the outside but tasted a bit bland. I did appreciate the generous amounts of cheese and arugula though. The Ice Cream Chipwich was not bad. The cookie was a bit tough to bite into at first due to being frozen but taste wise was great. It paired well with the ice cream. The Banana Sundae was heavenly. I loved the bruleed banana and the banana bread was moist and warm. In terms of service, I had very mixed feelings. I loved the waitress I had the first time I came for dinner; she was sweet and kind and answered our questions in a helpful manner. I had an amazing time which is why I was so inclined to come again within the same month. I was disappointed, because the service provided by a different waitress did not meet my expectations. It felt like she was neglecting us as it took over 30 minutes for her to remember to take our order. It took another good 30 minutes to properly wave her down to get our checks. The dinner ended up taking two hours, which would have been unnecessary if she had stopped by to properly check in on us. I would see her refilling the water for the tables next to us but walk away without acknowledging our empty cups. Considering the size of these cups provided, I would expect to get my water refilled. I hope this was just a one-off and maybe she had a bad day as I enjoyed the food and would like to come back. read more

I have been here before for dinner which was a great experience so I had to come back to try their brunch. They offer a variety of things on their menu - from buttermilk biscuits, croquettes, burgers, salads, classic breakfast dishes, and more. When I was here last I got their burger which was delicious and perfectly cooked. This time around I got an array of things because breakfast is my favorite meal of the day so I have a hard time choosing one thing - I got the fresh fruit and Greek yogurt, side sausage, and side of home fries. The fruit was fresh and delicious. I was worried it wouldn't be because delicious fruit can be hard to find in December but they did a good job. I also got their Honey Brunches of Oats drink which was tasty and sweet. Lastly, the ambiance was great. You could come and study or come and enjoy brunch with some friends.
