Had a very nice dinner here with a group of friends. The entrance and dining room are stunning. The interior looks like a high end club/lounge; very comfortable. The menu is innovative with dishes ranging from Indonesian/Thai cuisine to French, and several in between. Classics, like escargot in butter, have dellicius curry seasonings. The Lomboc chicken, Beef short rib "Nasi Goreng," oyster mushrooms, and escargot were top notch: innovative with interesting seasonings, cooked perfectly. Very vibe-y with a loud DJ. Aspen has many restaurants sprinkled around with delicious hits. As a newer restaurant to the city, the first of its kind to serve Indonesian cuisine, I was disappointed that the flavors were muted compared to the vibrant atmosphere. I wish they had more vegetable offerings as there was only brussel sprouts or a salad that barely had lettuce. The pandan custard had way too much passion fruit puree - it was very tart and overpowered the pandan flavor. Pricing is on par for family-style portions. There were long waits between the small plates, large plates, and desserts. The best dish was the cheese chocolate plate which was a surprising delight. read more

I thought the atmosphere was really cool & the menu was really unique. Looking at the menu I figured I'd have some gluten free options seeing as how most Asian inspired restaurants carry tamari to sub soy sauce. Our server seemed a little put off at my request and wasn't very tactful but honestly I don't want to make an issue about my dietary restrictions, however, we're on vacation & I get really sick & do not want to ruin our trip. Anyways, our waiter said "we can probably make certain things GF but they will not be as good" & for one of these dishes he said there's just a little soy sauce & I should be fine We had the Colada & espresso inspired martini to start. Then we ordered the chicken satay, avocado salad, lobster noodles (subbed rice noodles) & the short rib fried rice. The lobster noodles were sooooo good! One issue I had with the fried rice was that they removed the soy sauce because of the gluten & did not use salt in place of the soy so it needed salt. We finally flagged down our waiter & asked for salt for me & soy sauce for my husband, he said maybe they could provide soy sauce but he wasn't sure. He then brought my husband soy sauce & walked off. I didn't want my food to get cold so I walked up to the bar & asked for salt & one of the food runners kindly asked, "May we ask what is in need of salt?" And I explained. I don't think our server was trying to be a jerk but it did come off that way. I just wish there were more options but either way we'd 100% come back for the lobster noodles. read more

My husband and I were walking around downtown Aspen last night and my husband- as usual was looking online for food. We make reservations sometimes and other times we just try our luck... He saw the ratings and menu for Wayan and we needed to try it. They have outdoor and indoor seating, and we asked the hostess what she recommended. The outside is beautiful, but she said the inside was really incredible so we tried that out, and she was not wrong. It is absolutely stunning & takes you away.... Our server was a very nice young man from South Africa- and small world- we had some friends in common- I love when that happens!! He was very knowledgeable about the menu, very helpful and friendly. He told us how the menu works- that we should put all of our order in at the same time, from smaller plates to the larger ones, and the chefs would send them out in a timely manner. He was not wrong... and, you can let them know your spice meter... how spicy you would like your food. We split a bottle of very nice champagne, and shared all of the food- it was extremely fresh and delicious. Soooo good- I highly recommend Wayan!! The outdoor patio dining is a must if the weather is pleasant. It's beautiful, cozy and intimate. Ambience is great even during day but have heard it's even prettier at night with lights. The seating was comfortable. The food is presented beautifully but is not as flavorful as authentic Indonesian food and runs a bit bland. The exception was the corn fritter which was amazing and delicious. I think I could eat 2 myself although they're on the large side and only come q per order. The steamed sea bass was a bit disappointing and not very flavorful although the sauce was a moderately spicey. Grilled branzino had bones so be careful. The sauce with it was kind of bland. Is pricey as is with everything in Aspen. Service was good and because we had a birthday they generously comped our 2 desserts. Of the places I dined in Aspen I would still come here again and try other dishes. Maybe the lobster noodles. Would definitely get the corn fritters again. read more

Went on opening night for cocktails and some light bites. Ambiance 5*. The ethereal Indonesian decor is fabulous. Truly unique. Food/Drinks 5* Creative cocktails such as Calamansi Fizz and the Devils Avocado expertly crafted with exotic ingredients and house made syrups. The Hiramasa Sashimi was divine with a ginger turmeric dressing was a standout. Service 5*. When the owner checks on you twice, you know service is on point. In a nutshell, not even great food can overcome terrible service. It just spoils the overall experience. Aspen has a tons of excellent dining choices with lovely service. Don't waste your time here. Service: Had a date night with my husband and always love trying the new restaurants in Aspen. The bad. Long story short, our waiter didn't "see" us sitting at our table for 10 very long mins. Then he finally came over to introduce himself. Drinks order placed. Drinks came and dinner order placed. 55 mins later, no check in from the waiter, no food, empty glasses. Our waiter finally comes over to inform us his digital menu died and our order was lost. Okaaayyy. Reorder keyed in and assured our meal would be comped. Cool, I'm mollified. Food finally arrives and it is tasty, albeit very small portions. We finish eating, second drink never comes. Waiter forgot. We get the bill, and it turns out only two apps were comped. Utterly superb. Truly - and not without significant competition - the best restaurant in Aspen. Every dish, without exception, is extraordinary. I went last year (its first year open) and thought it was amazing...but sometimes returning to a restaurant you remember to be good proves disappointing. Upon returning this year - our most anticipated reservation of our annual trip to Aspen - I was completely blown away. The most difficult part about eating at Wayan is choosing among myriad items that all look amazing. We got the following... - the hamachi crudo appetizer...I was a little reluctant to order it because it seemed like the most conventional dish on the menu. So glad our waiter raved about it because it was somehow both delightfully refreshing yet deeply complex in flavor - the spring rolls - the mushrooms inside were a brilliant touch and the sauce...I literally finished it with a spoon - chicken satay - okay another seemingly conventional dish yet somehow more succulent than any chicken I've had with sauce that I also used a spoon to eat the last drop of - short rib fried rice - as good as it sounds. Unctuous yet not greasy. Perfectly plump yet not too rich. Exactly what you hope to get when ordering it - cauliflower - somehow even grilled cauliflower was elevated both texturally and gustatorily (confession - the word gustatory escaped me so when looking it up I discovered a perfect word to describe pretty much the entire meal - Organoleptical means means flavor + aroma + mouthfeel) - corn fritter - the menu needs to be updated to add a warning label for this dish. DO NOT EAT STANDING UP...your knees will buckle, you will swoon. The oozing crispness...the sauce that is somehow both complex in flavor yet doesn't mask the natural deliciousness of the corn itself...I will be dreaming about that first bite - sides of brussel sprouts and mushrooms (brought to us by mistake but once I tasted I refused to send them back...apologies to whatever table had to wait extra for their mushrooms) were both delectable and highly complementary to the rest of the meal - banana sundae dessert - really fun way to cap the meal. Sneakily good...most of the dishes above punch you in the face with deliciousness...the sundae starts nice but gets better with each bite Part of me wants to cancel the rest of our reservations and just return here. Food , appetizers main dishes took a very long time and the courses were sent out scattered. Sea bass was great! Mango salad average , potatoes and the yellow coconut rice poor reheated you can taste the microwave. We had an incredible meal here, the best meal of our week. Decor is beautiful and the vibe is pretty cool, and each of the food dishes was spectacular. We ordered the chicken satay, crispy, spring rolls, Black Sea bass, Hirasama sashimi, crab fried rice, nasi goreng, escargot was unbelievable. One slightly odd thing was that they didn't have any coffee or tea options for the end of the meal to go with dessert. Overall, though, I can't miss if you are in this area. Food was delicious. Unfortunately the service lacked a lot: 1) the person bringing our food was placing it on the table so quickly and was already walking away while he said what he brought us. We had to stop him twice to repeat it. 2) we ordered duck but were not given any knives. We had to wait and ask someone to get knives 3) we spilled some food on the table but nobody thought to wipe it down. They would just put the next dish on top of it.
