Honestly worst burger I have ever had in my life. I should have been paid to eat this subpar gobblygook of a burger. Only reason I am giving it one star is because I can't give it less. I've never had the opportunity to visit one of these restaurants until I was traveling on the way to Southern Connecticut and it was a good stopping point. I ordered a basic cheeseburger, Cajun tots and a Diet Coke. The burger was decently seasoned. The tots were quite heavy on the salty side but otherwise had a nice kick to them. The total for all this was $16 and change, which is maybe a little less than 5 Guys, but not by much. I would have tried a shake, but wasn't that hungry. The young men working seemed eager to serve and the restaurant was clean. This is one of those places that I might try again if in the area, but won't go out of my way for. read more

Absolutely wonderful experience tonight! I've eaten here before but it's now under new ownership and Laurie is welcoming and the food was excellent. The burgers were hot and flavorful and the sides were all delicious, Even the grill man was interested in how we liked the food. In Old Saybrook ordered a single hamburger, fries & a soda...$16!! What a waste of my money. Waited a long time with no other customers in front of me. The burger was "ok" not great. The fries were HORRIBLE ..I actually threw them out. They were wrapped in paper and probably sat that way while my burger cooked. This resulted in them steaming to a mushy yuck. I don't do fast food often but I will stick to McDonald's. At least I know what I am getting and their $5 deals are worth checking out. I'm ashamed that this is the Wayback Burgers that our community is stuck with. What an embarrassment. We placed an online order, which seemed like a great idea at the outset.. no need to wait for your order b/c they tell you when it's ready, and no chance of an order getting messed up because of a rushed employee or miscommunication. Except none of those things were true at the Saybrook Wayback Burgers :(. We had to stand in the restaurant for a full 15 minutes after we were told to come pick up our order, because they suddenly were in a rush. How about don't tell us to come at 6:15pm if you're super busy and our order isn't going to be ready until 6:30pm? Kind of defeats the purpose of take out if a restaurant can't manage that... To boot, the chicken tenders were so burned/overcooked we had to ask them to be prepared again. There's another 10 minutes of getting to sit and wait at the restaurant for a take out order. When we got home, the classic Wayback Burger--which you think after 50 years of preparing *couldn't* be screwed up--was two overcooked patties and cheese. No sign of a tomato or an onion or anything else that might have made this palatable. All of this might have been helped with a smudge of customer service, but the guy and girl that were working on this busy August 5 evening were apathetic and clearly had no interest doing the job they were doing. read more

I enjoyed the couple times we ordered Wayback burgers while on vacation. Staff was friendly and food came out at a reasonable rate. We ate in, and also did a takeout order. The takeout order was almost perfect, but I had to go back in and get two sodas they forgot. So I'd advise double checking your order before you leave. Loved the hotdog with tomato, mustard, and jalapeños. Fries and onion rings were good. Milkshakes had more of an icy texture as opposed to creamy which I'd prefer. It's so much faster and better priced than Five Guys. read more

Went here on Thursday evening, the place was not too busy but the employees weren't very caring. The food was not the best and the fries were a bit burnt. The service was slow. I have been to 3 different locations for Wayback (Meridian, Middletown, and this location). I couldn't believe how much better service was at Middletown location. The food at Meridian and Middletown was very good. I would happily drive to another location farther away like Middletown to get Wayback Burgers in future. Now that's what I call a burger!! Super moist, juicy, and flavorful. Both burgers were doubles. They tasted fresh and were perfectly grilled. I added sautéed onion, mushroom, and cheddar cheese on both burgers(the toppings were free!). Each burger was $3.99(this special price is on Tuesdays) The only extra charge was $1 for bacon that I added to one of the burgers. I also ordered chili cheese fries. The fries were delicious. Not too salty...which is good and the chili was flavorful. My only criticism is that it took a while to get my food because of the "made to order" way they do things. Not a biggie for me though since I was not in a hurry. If you have a hankering for a wonderful burger then "Way back" is definitely the "way" to go(lol)! read more

The pickles were pretty good. Bought a pulled pork sandwich, asked for the coleslaw on the side. No coleslaw and not a whole lot of pork either. The fries were soggy and fairly tasteless. Do not go here. If I could rate it a zero, I would. During the middle of a pandemic and the place was filthy. The tables looked greasy and the floor was dirty. There were 3 or 4 tables outside that were truly disgusting. They could use a complete bleaching. Chairs all askew like no one cared how it would look to customers. I just had my body cut open and when I woke up in the recovery room in Massachusetts, I told the nurse I wanted a cheeseburger. She laughed and probably thought it was the anesthesia talking. It wasn't! I wanted a cheeseburger. Fast forward 5 days and here I am, at Wayback Burger. Some reviews aren't that good, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The double cheeseburger is the perfect amount of meat for the bun. If you get a single, then you better add stuff, otherwise the bun is overwhelming. The burgers are great. The interior is echo-y, but the basket liners include reading material (the grammatical and spelling errors are free too!). The menu has a nice selection for most carnivores to find something they will like. Like Five Guys, this place has a lot of toppings to choose from. Unlike Five Guys, the double burger isn't overwhelming. The food is made to order, but I have never waited more than about 5 minutes. If that 5 minutes for a delicious burger is just not fast enough for you, go to McDonalds where you may wait 5 minutes, but at least you don't have to worry about it being delicious and fresh. read more

The burgers are really good here. I love the toasted buttery bun. Let's face it, if you're eating here you're not counting calories so go for it. The fries are good, onion rings are better. Five Guys has moved it just a bit down the road and though I like the Five Guys burger I hate the fries - but I go there rather than Wayback because Wayback serves Pepsi. I can't stand Pepsi. Dispair. A burger chain that makes me long for the Golden Arches. Wholly unimpressive offerings. This place makes 5 Guys look like Le Cirque. And, the staff of this place had the 10,000 yard stare of recent tornado victims. While they were not impolite, they seemed overwhelmed by the task of having to actually prepare burgers and fries and shakes. Somehow 5 Guys does this significantly better and they offer peanuts to chew on while you wait for the food. Jakes Wayback is absolutely on par with McDonalds. Except, MickeyD's is cheaper, better, the fries are way better, and the food is almost instantly prepared. If Yelp had negative ratings this place would qualify. read more

Shortly after Five Guys entered the state Jake's Wayback showed up with similar burgers and a similar setup. This is the 12th Wayback Burgers in the nutmeg state. I say "similar" because in my opinion Wayback's burgers and fries aren't as good as Five Guys. The burgers might be debatable but I don't think anyone will disagree that Five Guys makes better fries. While the building is nice, it is sort of odd. I doubt it was originally designed for a burger joint because it is quite small and better suited for a Dunkin' Donuts. I sort of feel bad for the employees because they're shoe horned into a very cramped kitchen space. During its first week of operation the place was jam packed with lots of curious customers, myself included. However the staff did an excellent job in efficiently handling the masses especially considering they had very little experience under their belts. Next time I want to try the WB Cod which their menu describes an Icelandic fish fillet. I sort of have an insatiable obsession with just about anything Icelandic. It should be interesting to see if this place can survive in this part of Old Saybrook. Because it's quite far from the center of town. I sort of have my doubts. The true test will be in the winter time when the town population decreases and all restaurants slow down along the shoreline. However Sal's Pizzeria up the road moved in a few years ago and has been doing very good business, both in the summer time and winter time. So if they can survive all year long perhaps this Wayback can survive as well. read more

I called to place a take out order and a girl answered the phone like she was answering her personal cell phone. I had no idea if I even had the correct business phone number. When I get there it's completely dead. Probably for a reason... The cashier girl, probably the same idiot who answered the phone just stands there and looks at us... Basically there is no customer service here. After I watched my food finish being made the girl making it had to ask the other girl who was on her break if my order was to go! Like I'm not standing here right in front of you like you can open your damn mouth and ask me if it's for here or to go! Well needless to say, I won't be returning to this wayback... Tried Wayback tonight because I got a 25% off coupon yesterday. The place is clean and employees nice. Burgers were served hot and juicy. Lots of toppings to choose from. They also serve Sabrett hot dogs, chicken sandwiches, and cheese steak sandwiches. Fries were better than most and the onion rings were very good. Soda is Pepsi products and the shakes were great. Good place for a quick burger. I will definately come back here. read more
