Wayward Baking is one of my favorite bakeries of 2026. 1. I've only heard great things about Wayward Baking so I had some expectations - each one of them was met and then some. This bakery is simply amazing and everything I tried was so good. 2. I ordered a kouign amann, chocolate croissant, morning bun, double chocolate cookie, and two caneles. If I could order more, I would've added a rice pudding danish, basque cheesecake slice, and madeleine. I love that when standing in line, you can peek into the kitchen to see what the bakers are working on. It's really nice to see the process and work that go into everything. 3. Their chocolate croissant is my ideal chocolate croissant. I love when the outer layer is crisp and the inner layers are soft and buttery. The caneles were yummy - they were crispy on the outside, custardy on the inside, and the flavor was perfect. I loved the double chocolate cookie as well, it had great texture and the flavor was very balanced - not too sweet! 4. Even if it's a bit out of the way, I would absolutely come back every time I'm in the area. read more

Seeing all the 5 star reviews I had to give this place a try. The place is very popular with the locals and there always seems to be a line. Came here on a Friday morning and there was still a small line. I got three croissants and a special Danish. I thought the croissants were pretty good but not exceptional. However, I thought the Fig & Walnut Danish was excellent, although pricey at $8. The croissants could've used more filling, and the almond croissant tasted a bit burnt. Maybe I'm just spoiled by so many good bakeries in my area, but I'm sure this is probably the best bakery in this area. read more

small bakeshop in a quiet, lowkey town. you can smell the goods from outside the shop and can see the process of their bakes - everything is high quality. their canele was a bit burnt/overbaked but still had that amazing caramel flavor and custardy texture with a crisp exterior. would love to try everything else! read more

I've been in this bakery a few times and while the pastries and bread are good, I have personally observed the owner's demeanor toward his employees, particularly the women working there. His behavior has come across as inappropriate, crude, and extremely disrespectful. Any kind of unwanted physical touching, raising your voice at employees, intimidating them, or reducing employees to tears is unacceptable behavior from an owner or manager. That is not healthy leadership, it creates a toxic and hostile workplace environment. Employees deserve to feel safe, respected, and VALUED while they are at work. Based on what I have personally witnessed, I would not feel comfortable supporting a business where employees are treated this way. I will no longer be supporting wayward and I would advise you to do the same. read more

This was a recommendation from a friend of a friend who lives here and it very much feels like the "if you know, you know" type of local spot. We got there around 9am on a Sunday and there was a short line that moved quickly. Everything in the pastry case looked delicious. We got a tomato danish, a strawberry and goat cheese danish, and a peanut butter & jelly croiffin. The croiffin was the highlight of the show, the peanut butter cream wasn't dry at all and the pastry was crispy but not too flaky! There are a few seats inside and small tables outside, but I think it's mainly a takeaway spot. read more

Amazing pastries at this small bakery! They sell out fast, so make sure you come early. They have pastries that are staples and others that are seasonal. We loved the fresh fruit added to the pastries! The service was great! A customer accidentally dropped their pastry and they were nice enough to give them another one. Restrooms are sound back. The kind of bakery I dream about at night. Just WOW! I wanted to say, "I'll take one of everything." Choosing was nearly impossible because everything looked spectacular. On my first visit, I arrived right at opening and was told to come back in about an hour for more options. No problem, I grabbed a coffee nearby, explored a park, and discovered a hotel that I ended up booking and falling in love with. Over my visits I tried the ham & cheese croissant, kouign-amann, and a seasonal avocado toast. Each pastry was perfection, and the avocado toast was both unpique and delicious. Their menu offers a great mix of sweet and savory treats, but don't show up at opening if you want the full spread. Pro tip: Bay Wood Park Pier is just minutes away. Pair your pastries with a stroll and an incredible view! To the team at Wayward Baking: thank you for the most delicious mornings. Been in Los Osos for the last couple of days and new to the area so I googled coffee shops and this was one of them that popped up. Didn't know what to get as my drink choice, chai they didn't make. Asked cashier what he recommended and he couldn't really tell me. I went with the avacodo toast and vanilla latte. There were 7 people working behind the counter and one customer in front of me. Got the latte and it was mostly steamed milk, very disappointed. Then I waited 15mins for my toast and when I got it, it was not worth the $15, it was burnt and every bite I took tasted burnt. Love love love this place! I've heard incredible things from friends, family, and clients about their loaves. This last Saturday, we went to give it a go. I got the sourdough loaf and my sister got the Olive sourdough loaf. We were so blown away by the quality of the bread. It was extremely good toasted for breakfast and we also made garlic bread with it which was to-die-for. The ambiance of Wayward is cozy and quaint. The service was impeccable and the girl helping us was really sweet. Everyone was in a good mood which is always a good thing to see. It was clean and tidy. These people have it going on! They are in a neighborhood strip mall, in a little town, and there is a line. The food is fantastic!!! I have tried a number of things, over a number of visits, they are shooting for the highest quality. It appears they have more fancy stuff on weekends, but who cares, it is all great. This is our absolute favorite bakery in SLO County and there are tons of good ones around here! We love everything we've had to date whether it's sweet or savory. Their pastries, chocolate, and other baked items are always balanced with the perfect amount of sweetness and hand made to impress from a visual standpoint as well. Excellent on many levels! I lived in Paris, France, for over ten years and can honestly say Wayward's croissants are as good as any of the best I had over the years I was an expat. Wayward breads are very good too. I just wish Tim would start making baguettes and invest in a slicing machine to slice the big loafs. A solid croissant, but my favorite by far was the canelé. I loved how much structure it had while still keeping a custardy interior! I think my favorite so far has been the yuzu matcha pavlova - great balance, textures, and flavors. Service here is pretty stellar, with your standard SLO fanfare of friendliness and --vibes--. I've got two minor gripes: one, the line and waits can get pretty long here. Secondly, flavors are a bit muted (imo) on most of the baked goods. Just my opinion though. read more

This is one of those places where it's so good you almost don't want to leave a review because you don't want the line to get long. Don't let the laid back, coastal bohemian vibe fool you... this bakery is nothing short of world-class. Their basque cheesecake is actually better than what I ate in San Sebastián. Every single pastry is incredible, there are no duds. To borrow a phrase from Sum 41's iconic 2001 album, Wayward truly is "All Killer, No Filler". In reality, that album only had two good songs (Fat Lip and In too Deep) and Wayward has a full menu of certified bangers. Ultimately, those two songs would still be enough to see the album go Platinum in the US, England, and Canada. But imagine if every song on that album was as anthemic as Fat Lip. It is so difficult to find good sourdough bread. This is the place for hardy bread in the Central Coast. Good natural bread should only last for 1 week but if it is good, it would be consumed before it degrades. I have decided to bookmark this place to buy their bread every time I visit this area.
