Back Porch Bakery - Yummers - Bakeries Near Me - San Luis Obispo, California

We first discovered Back Porch Bakery because we fell in love with their baguette at Novo a few years back. When we were told they get it from Back Porch, we immediately went the next day to their warehouse to get some before leaving. Unfortunately, we were not aware that the full baguettes have to be preordered 48 hours in advance, so we were only able to get our hand on the demis. Ever since then, I would put in my order online before leaving the Bay Area for those full baguettes that are restaurant sized and spinach and feta croissants. Just be aware when you are ordering that it still reflects Prado as your location for the warehouse vs. the Carlton location which is in Atascadero as it tends to default to Carlton at the checkout page. I have ordered from there every time I go down but last fall's baguette was surprisingly dry so not sure if they changed the recipe as the one I got this spring also didn't seem the same as the original when it used to have a nice crisp chew on the outside and the inside was soft. read more

I was in town and came across back porch because I saw the scones. We got there and the place was empty but got 3 pastries and they all were delicious bread texture is moist and flaky. Give them a try , the young lady was very nice and the place has a nice seating area, for a morning chat with coffee and pastry!!!I will definitely come back here!! read more

Great variety of croissants, and breads depending on time you go. Kind of tricky to find as directions send you to the back of FedEx. Go straight on Prado and turn into the gray and green striped buildings. It doesn't have a sign, only number on the right hand side of it. Location is not a sit down place more of a pay and go bakery. Their spinach and fetta croissants are delicious! Highly recommended if in the area, as it's off the frwy. Venmo only. Coincidentally, we've gone to their main bakery in Atascadero which is a sit down with coffee service. Both have great service. read more

YUMMMM! I love Back Porch! I discovered them during COVID, when they did warehouse pickups - "The Flag Is Up!". Their morning buns are some of my favorite pastries ever, with a slight orange taste to them. Baguettes are hard to pass up...great with cheese, meats, or wine. They are fantastic on their own, too. I actually was at Lucy's coffee, and I had a avocado toast for breakfast there and when I bit into that toast, I was so excited because that's the first time I ever experienced that bread! the bread was amazing that I got up and I went to the front where they're serving coffee and asked them. Where did you get this bread and I've been looking for it ever since and they told me they got it from Atascadero so then I went online and they showed one at slow and I just went over there. I couldn't find a number I mean I'm sure people wanna know and I couldn't find a number of where exactly it was, that was a little bit confusing, but I am so glad I got up early and went down there to check it out myself so happy I'm so happy thank you for landing yourself in San Luis Obispo!! read more

Warehouse/Wholesale/Online Local Bakery Take: While the main full service retail store happens to be in downtown Atascadero next to the Carlton Hotel, this bakery is a bit hard to find warehouse on Prado Rd.. At this location, you can order on-line for pick-up, a day or two in advance. It is best for large orders, but not so for small ones, or if you want more services. Pick up is early AM and they are closed to the public by the afternoon, so then you can go to WF for the very same bread a bit later. They do not have the selection that the retail store does and they mainly do wholesale for various area shop including Whole Paycheck market in nearby SLO. If you are out just for bread, WF is in many ways an easier venue, and it is the very same bread at the same price & is available all the hours WF is open. It would be nice for them to open even a tiny retail store somewhere in South SLO county for fans of their breads & pastries. While retailers sometimes carry Back Porch, they frequently switch from one Bakery or another so it is not reliable. Some supermarkets, like Cal-Fresh make their own fairly decent bread in house, and after the initial baking frenzy during the pandemic subsided, it appears that many of the former DIY bakers or their friends want the ease of having someone else do it. When we first discovered their bread at Caliwala in Santa Margarita, we found that we really liked it, and found the Atascadero store, next this wholesale warehouse, and finally that WF carries it. They do have several different breads and they are all good with a nice crunchy crust and some varieties use good amount of whole wheat flour which is nice. Since they use simple basic ingredients, shelf life is short unless you refrigerate. It is a Catch-22, since the more you refrigerate, the less crunchy it becomes, but the less mold starts to grow. You can restore a measure of the original crunch by toasting. All in all, Back Porch does make great products and really nice people work here & at the other location, but this location is really not great for the general consumer for a small amount. The Back Porch Bakery has a cool story which is on their website. It is really nice that a local bakery has done fairly well for themselves and this is reflected in the retailers that now carry their breads, as well as, the popular store in Atascadero, which sells out of alot of things many a time. The Atascadero stores closes about 2 PM, but WF closes about 9 PM if you want a bread fix. Of course, if you hit WF early in the AM, you are likely to get non-discounted day old bread at full price.... but that is Whole Paycheck for you. It is ironic that Amazon has a warehouse full of discounted items, but not at there WF stores. Some stores/bakeries sell day old products at a discount, but it is a hit and miss affair. I have never been to the Atascadero store early enough to see what that may look like. We do like to sometimes make a stop at the Atascadero shop on Saturdays on the way to, or from, the Templeton Farmers Market. For those who are into the number of stars. Their bread & some other items are 5 Stars, but the location, ease, and limitations of this specific location for the average customer is kind of Meh to OK. Not that I want to promote WF by any means, but ease is ease. read more

The slo location opened for retail during covid and is only open from 7am-11am for drive-up/walk-up services, but they have got some great bread and pastries! If you're really wanting something specific on their menu, you should order the day before, because they do sell out of things! It's the bakery for so many of SLO's restaurants, like high st deli, and having it closer than Atascadero is so nice. Definitely recommend! read more

Amazing pastries! While visiting SLO, we stopped at a local coffee shop and had the best croissant I've ever eaten. Turns out it was from this wholesale bakery. This place is a little hard to find but worth it. Like another reviewer mentioned, it's not a sit down establishment but there was a bench outside last time I was there. We drove 30 miles to try out Back Porch Bakery after reading some outstanding reviews. Well worth the trip. Incredible breakfast pastries and delicious breads. The owner was nice enough to come out and speak to us about the Bakery. He sells his product in various cafes, stores, etc. throughout the Central Coast. Unfortunately many cafes take the credit for Back Porch's amazing product as they are a whole seller. The Bakery's retail store/cafe is located in a charming old, restored hotel in Atascadero. read more
