Not at all what I was expecting. To be fair, I didn't know what to expect and the fear of the unknown was a bit more than expected. James, gave a brief description on how to operate the Segway and asked for a volunteer...luckily a brave teenager stepped up to the plate and within a minute he was riding around on his own. I felt the fear slowly subside as one by one the others in the group stepped on their Segways and were riding around. It was my turn to step on...I thought my heart was going to beat right out of my chest as the adrenaline was pumping through my system. James was very reassuring and said he wouldn't let go until I was ready. To my surprise, it was very stable, super easy to maneuver and within minutes the entire group (including myself) were pros and we were on our way. The tour was great, lots of information and yes a healthy dose of lame jokes (reminds me of the jungle cruise at Disneyland...I wouldn't change a thing). My company recently decided on taking a Segway tour for a team building exercise and I was in charge of finding a company in San Diego. I found We Love Tourists on Yelp and am so glad I chose to do the Segway tour with them! We had a blast! It was a lot more fun than we expected. We knew we'd look like dorks with helmets on and doing a tour, but really, it was a ton of fun trying to go as fast as we could on the Segways, learning about the city, and even interacting with passersby. We took the San Diego City Loop tour which covers about 12 miles in 2 hours. The tour starts downtown and we made our way up to Balboa Park through Little Italy to the Harbor and back into downtown. After about an hour, we took a break, which was much needed. Even though we're just standing on a Segway the whole time, they are constantly in motion, so you have to make sure that your weight is centered if you don't want to move forward or backward. Our feet hurt the most after the tour, so make sure to wear very comfy shoes with support (tennis shoes). It didn't take long to get used to being on a Segway; after our tour as we were walking to the car, we commented on how much it sucks to walk now compared to being on a Segway! Our tour guide, Bridgette, was awesome. She was very friendly, personable, knowledgeable, and easy going. Bridgette did a great job in teaching us and we all caught on to how to operate the Segway very quickly. She gave us some tips and even encouraged us to go as fast as we wanted (where it was safe). We did stop at some spots and she gave us info on the buildings and the city. Being a native San Diegan, I actually learned some new things! Since we were focused on team building, I think it was just the right amount of information and allowed us to really move and have fun on the Segways. She didn't have any problems with taking photos for us and also gave us some great happy hour spots to go to after our tour. I would definitely recommend taking a tour with Bridgette! Booking the tour was very easy as well. I sent a text message (as their website suggests) and I got a text response very quickly. We corresponded via text initially, which is what I preferred, so it worked out great for me. I then spoke with Chris, tour booking manager, the week of our tour to confirm everything and received an email confirmation with the details. I got an awesome deal for our tour, just check their website for current deals or ask. I think if I ever do a tour of any city, going by Segway is the way to go! I wasn't sure if I should give 3 or 4 stars. Overall we had a good time. We booked without incident and even changed to an earlier time of day a couple days prior. The property was easy to find in La Jolla. The staff member was on time and friendly. My husband and I along with another couple spent about 20 minutes learning the Segway. None of us had ever ridden before. The other husband fell when we were learning. But then it was time to go. The staff member (sorry forgot his name. Young man with dark hair) didn't have too terribly much to say. I was hoping for my info about the area. After La Jolla cove area he took us uphill against traffic in construction. Long story short...... He stopped in Front of me and I fell in front of like 100 people. Luckily I fell smart and wasn't injured. I just think they could have picked a better route. He felt horrible and was helpful getting me started again. Everyone says segways are easy but I am a pretty fit 40 yr old and for me it wasn't easy!!! Yes if it is flat and straight and no other foot traffic.... it's cake. Throw in Hills, uneven terrain and swarms of people and it's tough!!! read more

Our tour guide James was hilarious in that deadpan kind of way. After "just enough Segway training" to avoid killing ourselves at the start, we got going. I eventually realized that La Jolla is just about the right size that a walking tour isn't as good as a Segway tour. Nice location, but the guides are a little harsh! Went on a segway tour with a group of friends as part of a bachelorette party. We began with a lesson, which was really appreciated and helped a lot. Then we began our tour. It really was a nice day, great locations, and a good amount of time. HOWEVER, here are the downfalls... Each and every one of us experienced some sort of reprimand or harsh response from one of the two guides. At first I thought it was just the one guide, James, but it turned out Bridgette had also been a bit harsh with one of our party members. At one point James had pointed out to one of our members that she is not providing good advertising for his business by talking to people. What??? She responded that she is showing them that she's having fun and is the best method of marketing his company. His response was that he's been doing this for four years and he knows how to market. Yikes! Who says that to customers? Also, I would have wanted more of a tour. We were taken to the high school, the park, tide pools, and The Comedy Store. Those are OK places, but there wasn't much information given about them. We learned what a couple of houses were worth monetarily (OK, thanks I have the Redfin app). I didn't feel I learned anything about San Diego from this tour. I asked about the trees leaning away from the ocean. The response? Because of the wind. The end. Would I do this again? Yes. With this company? No. Was this worth the money? No. They should knock about $20 off. The segways are super fun. Totally do this. First off, I want to thank Bridgette for a great time. Going through beautiful La Jolla with my parents who were visiting while my stepdad not controlling his segway was a struggle but she handled it VERY well; with patience and skill. She made it a point to explain how to drive it and had great energy in helping us. I'm really glad we went even though he was out of control enough to make my Mom fall, she had her first aid kit ready to go and helped her out. It was such a beautiful day too! Gorgeous views, gorgeous houses and lots of great little facts about the city I never would have known without her knowledge. My only recommendation is not going with more than 3-4 people, if you get too far back, you can't really hear some of the tidbits while you're "driving" :) Which I didn't mind doing at all seeing as I was the only one who lived here in our group. What a great a fun way to see a place and get around town! My family was visiting and we decided to try a Segway tour. You see them around town, even on vacation, and you always wonder what it's like. Let's be real, they're kind've dorky and we've all made that face- ugh, segways! Yet, they look fun...they are!! They zip around up to 12mph and are quite comfortable and easy to ride and maneuver once you get acclimated to it. Try as you might, they don't exceed 12mph so don't waste your time or energy to amp it up any faster because it's just not going to happen. We ended up booking the 2 site tour which included downtown, Gaslamp, Balboa Park and the Harbor. I called and spoke to Chris the day before who happened to have some openings on a Sunday afternoon. Chris was very professional, efficient and friendly. He was detailed and gave us all the instructions we needed along with email and confirmation. There are 2 locations so depending on which tour you book will determine which location you go to. Obviously, the tour we took lands us downtown as a starting point so you may need to get there earlier to find parking. Also note, parking downtown isn't always free so that may be an additional cost you will incur unless you go on Sunday, like we did and can find street parking. The other tour they off is the La Jolla/Beach tour which sounds really nice too. The guys at the business office were also very friendly and had a very laid back vibe that was easy-going and chill. Albert, one of the owners is also a big foodie so you can dish with him about favorite places to grub. Unfortunately, our tour started 15-20min late as the other part of our group was tardy but that's no fault of the tour. The tour guide was nice and had a good sense of humor which he incorporated at many stops along the way. The only downside was at times the areas we were at could be quite loud from street traffic and/or crowds and the guide spoke extremely fast and could be difficult to hear. Otherwise, he kept good track of everyone and made sure to give any specific instructions, if needed when we were traveling along certain roads/areas (eg. getting uphill/downhill, watching for speed bumps). My favorite stop was Balboa Park for sure. It was nice to get around to all the different parts of the park and also learn about some of the culture and area that I wasn't familiar with. I believe they limit the tour to 6 people max not including the tour guide which makes it nice that it's a smaller group. Lots of fun and great way to tour a city including your own! read more

I don't know HOW my friend got me to agree to get this groupon for a segway tour around San Diego - when she is a local and I have been living here for ten+ years. Yea, you know those dorky tourists with helmets you see segway-ing it around Seaport Village...that was me. That being said, $40 bucks for a two hour long tour wasn't a bad deal at all. First, let me admit that my sister and I got the Groupon for this as sort of a joke for my brother's 40th. We've lived in the San Diego area for sometime and I was expecting some fun but mostly in the way of something to tease my brother about. Boy, was I wrong. None of us had been on a Segway, and so I was surprised at how sensitive they are to your body's movements. It takes some experience to become accustomed but about 1/2 hour into the tour I would say that I (and others on the tour) felt pretty comfortable staying in one place (not as easy as you'd think since they don't shut off) and zipping up and down sidewalk ramps. Still I would say that if someone took a snapshot of my face during the first 10 minutes, it would have screamed 'White knuckle death grip! Ack! Get out of my way!' And in short order it progressed to "Goofy smile! This is a blast! Watch me spin/shoot up this hill!'. As other reviewers have mentioned, James is seriously knowledgeable about the history of La Jolla. Knowledgeable and interesting are sometimes two different things but not for James. He makes it fun. I was also impressed with his relaxed approach to the tour. The timing was just right; I felt neither hurried nor antsy. James's strategy for maintaining civility between Segwayers and others using the sidewalks/streets was both positive and proactive, with an eye to safety. My husband and I had a great time riding Segways around La Jolla guided by our tour guide James. We both got used to the segways pretty quickly! We can't say the same for one of the older fellows in our tour group who fell off twice. You really need to pay attention while on those Segways, and James warns you about that throughout the tour. I was feeling a little adventurous when I saw this on groupons and decided what the heck! Being new to San Diego this was a great way to see the city. I've never been a fan of the segway until now! It is so much fun and not at all difficult to ride. The tour was fun and I felt safe the whole time! We went from around the Seaport Village area (a few blocks, from where we parked) and went all around to PetCo Park, all through Balboa, down to Harbor side and back! It was so much fun both my husband and I had HUGE smiles on our faces the whole time! The guide was knowledgeable and pretty humorous! I would recommend this to anyone! (Side bar) we were a little sore but it's so worth the pain! I have had about 5 knee surgeries (two ACL reconstructive surgeries) but it didn't really bother my knee. I think it was just standing for 2 hours was a bit strenuous but well worth it! Update: Loved the first tour so much I took my friend (who is totally uncoordinated, sorry but true) to the La Jolla tour and it was so much fun! Learning how to ride the segway was fun and easy thanks to our tour-guide James. The actual tour was informative, entertaining and of course beautiful because it was La Jolla!!! James does a great job of sharing the history of La Jolla in an informative but humorous way which I've found is rare with most tour guides. I did the tour as a date, and it was a big hit! I call them and they say it was cancelled due to wind(even though it was a beautiful day and not windy) and they left me a voice mail.. guess what I did not miss any calls or get a voicemail saying it was cancelled so I wasted 3 hours driving that day. To top it off I went to eat lunch in Gas Lamp since we drove all the way down there and what do I see ride by as we ate, a segway tour from a different company, apparently they have a different view of weather. They apologized and said to reschedule. I called to reschedule a few weeks later and they do not answer my phone call, I had to call three times to reach them and then they say they are full and cannot give me a tour even though I scheduled it two weeks in advance. A few months later I realized my tour vouchers were going to expire so I tried to schedule again 3rd time!! They tell me they are booked for 3 weeks solid and my voucher expires in 2 weeks so Chris said he would check with management and see what he could do since he could not refund the money and then call me back. 3 weeks later no phone call. I called no answer, I emailed two times and still no response. Its now been 4 weeks with no communication. Basically stole $90 from me and wont even contact me back to even apologize for the experience. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY! We did the Advanced Segway Tour of La Jolla since we had some prior Segway experience and we were not disappointed. Our tourguide James was fun and knowledgeable. I enjoyed the climb up to see Mt. Soledad, but the best part of the tour was the route down to Mission Beach along a jogging path next to a creek, going over some pedestrian bridges and rolling along Mission Bay passed some cool waterfront houses, and then heading to the beach to roll along the strand up Pacific Beach along the coast. read more

I had a really great time with our tour guide James! I did the downtown San Diego tour, and I was really surprised by how long of a route we were able to cover in 2 hours! We started at 5PM, so as the sun set, it did get fairly chilly even though I did my tour in the middle of August. We started with a quick introduction on how to maneuver the segway, and although most of us started off a little hesitant and quick frankly terrified of the odd vehicle, we got used to it very fast! During the 2 hour tour, I had an incredible amount of fun pushing the segway to its fullest potential (a whomping 12 mph) as people gave us odd looks or started video recording us on their camera phones. Paparazzi... just can't get them off my tail, ever! We covered most of the downtown attractions, including the SD library, Petco park, Gaslamp, etc. We made our way towards Balboa Park and whizzed through the rose and cactus gardens. We then crossed the Balboa bridge and made our way back down to the downtown area, then went to the shore to check out the Midway and the Star of Inda. By then, my feet and knees were ACHING! Even though the segway saves us from walking, it is no different from stading still in one spot for 2 straight hours, so my poor flat foot really took a toll (I knew I shouldn't have worn flip flops...) I would recommend a segway tour to anyone interested, even if you're a local (I am!). Even if you've been to all of these places a bajillion times, it's a whole new experience doing it on a two-wheeled contraption that came straight out of a sci-fi book. :) read more

I've always been curious about Segways and how it would be to ride one. It looked like fun so I thought I'd give "We Love Tourists" a try. My mom came into town to visit, and we took one of the tours of La Jolla. It was perfect for us because my mom has a bad foot and wouldn't have been able to walk all over and see as many of the sights we got to see while riding the segways. Our guide was flexible with scheduling our tour and timely when he met up with us. I thought it would be difficult to ride, but in fact, it was really easy! We had a great teacher, who started us in the grass (which eased my fears!). Our guide gave us good history/insight on the local area. We had a great time riding the Segways and exploring! It was a super fun, reasonably priced and relaxing way to explore the La Jolla area and ride along the beautiful California coast. We rode past the La Jolla Cove, the Children's Pool (where the seals hang out) and the quaint little shops and restaurants on the main street in downtown La Jolla. My husband and I took the two-hour San Diego Segway Tour with James as our guide and it was perfect!! I was a bit apprehensive--but curious-- about using a Segway. I am over 65 and not athletic. I have severe arthritis in both knees and am not too coordinated (okay, I am a klutz!). I am sharing this info because when I mentioned our plan to take this tour, friends told me that I was crazy. I am now recommending this tour to my friends! James, our guide, was patient with the intro to the Segway and I was amazed at how quickly I felt comfortable. I never got up to the maximum 12 MPH speed, but was able to ride through the downtown area, Petco Park, Balboa Park, and along Harbor Drive. It was truly a blast--and a wonderful way to see this part of the city. When I called to make the reservation, I left a message and Albert called back later in the day. He was polite and efficient --sending a confirmation email with details and a cell number if we needed to make contact. Definitely a five-star experience! read more

The rating is really 4.5 stars, but I rounded up because our tour guide (Ryan) did a fantastic job at making the tour fun and educational. I wanted to do something different, but nothing out of the world dangerous so I decided on a segway tour. i found an awesome deal on Groupon so I purchased 2 tickets, called in and Albert picked up the phone. He was really nice and got me and my GF on the 7 AM tour. He said I was all set and he will send me the confirmation e-mail later in the evening. Here is where the half star deduction and only minor negative item about my experience with We Love Tourists. I never got the confirmation e-mail after waiting over 48 hours. I called numerous times each day for about a week and a half, but could not get a live person to answer the phone. I also sent a couple of e-mails and did not get a response. I left a VM 3 days before my trip down to San Diego and I got a call back from Chris within 15 minutes. He apologized for the lack of response via e-mail and got me set up with the 12:30 PM tour because the 7 AM was cancelled. It was all good with me at that point. I was glad someone called me back! Chris got me set up and sent me the confirmation e-mail within 15 minutes like he said he would and all was good from here. Tip for everyone here is to leave a voicemail! Me and my GF arrived at the specified location. Ryan was sun bathing on his table while waiting for the tourists to arrive. We filled out the typical liability paperwork, got our helmets and after 5 minutes of segaway training we were off to the sight seeing areas. I have to say i was nervous, but it was just a matter of time before you get comfortable with the segways. Ryan did a great job at making sure it was safe to cross the streets. He made entertaining jokes at each stop and made the whole tour seem quicker than it really was. The tour last for around 1hr and 30 minutes. He answered all of the questions each of the tourist folks had asked. I did miss riding on the segway near the end of the tour. I felt I had a strong bond going with my segway. One day I will come back for my segway! I have to say people will stare at you while your on the segway during the tour, but who cares. At the end of the day you will know that they were walking and their feet are probably aching while you covered more ground and all you did was stand and floated around town! How cool is that !? Who is the sucker now? I am glad I did the segway tour as it does cover a lot of ground. I also learned a lot of different landmarks that I never knew existed in San Diego. First thing that comes to my mind when I think of San Diego is the San Diego Zoo and Sea World, but now I know there is another side to San Diego, like the awesome beaches, seals, other landmark buildings. I highly recommend taking a tour from these guys. I know there are a few bad reviews and I am sure they have their valid reasons. This was our second trip with James and this time we did La Jolla. Having recently done a segway tour with another company on Catalina, I can say that We Love Tourists is a great company by comparison. The segways are high quality, safe, and easy to control and James is an above average guide. The trip this time was a little short of the 2 hours expected, but it was fine since it is hard to stand that long anyway. We saw parts of La Jolla we haven't seen before and it is really beautiful. We prefer the downtown tour but they were both great. We are looking forward to going again when they get Coronado approved. read more

My wife and I are from out of town, but she attended college in the San Diego area. Her mother still lives in the area. We found this company through Groupon.com and we are glad we did. The experience was incredible. Even though the co-owner of the business met us at his store front on Pearl Street next to the Comedy Store in La Jolla and it wasn't finished (no signage and he was laying the hardwood floors himself) the Segways were in top operating condition. James taught each of us on the tour how to operate a Segway and provided helmets to each of us. You can tell up front that he knows a lot about La Jolla because he stops frequently to talk about various things we are passing by. As history buffs, my wife and I really appreciated that he took the time to explain many of the things we were seeing. The tour took us down to a place to watch seals and sea lions and all of the many things that the Scripps family donated to the area. We took our tour on Father's Day and at 8AM. It was nice because not many people were out on sidewalks just yet and the parking on the streets was free (only on Sundays and holidays). The tour lasted 2 hours and it felt like it went by too fast. We were having too much fun. If you're from the area or from out of town, this was a great experience to have and a great way to try out a Segway for a couple hours. Booked a tour through Living Social special. Did have a bit of communication difficulty booking the tour, but once we finally got a hold of the owner we were booked and all was OK. We meet up on Saturday morning for a tour in the Gaslamp, which actually included much more of the area than I had anticipated. We toured through the Gaslamp, into Balboa Park, into Little Italy, along the Harbor and back to the meeting spot. Our tour guide was James, one of the co-owners. He was a good guide and I would recommend this tour. The sedgway was a bit more complex to operate than I had originally thought. It took me some time to get comfortable riding it, but once I did it was fun. Never fell off or anything like that, though did have an incident where a car almost turned into me (bad driver!). We were provided bottles of water, which were nice, especially since the day turned out to be much warmer than I had anticipted. we had a brief training sessin and then we were on our way. We really lucked out - it was only us and James. A personal tour -great! James was informative - we stopped or rode by many areas of San Diego that, as locals, we really had never seen. It was fun and informatve. Though my calfs were a bit sofe after 2 hours!!! More of a work out than you thinkl. My best friend and I had an awesome segway tour of Downtown San Diego. I had given the Groupon as a birthday gift to her and she was thrilled and excited at being able to do a segway tour. I suggest arriving early to find parking for the Downtown tour because on a Sunday morning, parking was pretty bad. I drove around for a good 30 minutes trying to find parking close to their Downtown office but there wasn't too much street parking and the parking garages close by were all closed. We ended up parking at a meter about 6-7 blocks away. Thankfully in Downtown San Diego, parking at meters is free on Sunday. You just need time to walk to the office and check in. Once you arrive, you sign some paperwork and pick out a very stylish helmet before heading to a park close to the office to get a quick tutorial on the segways. After the tutorial, you're off and on your way through Downtown. As a native San Diegan, I've seen almost all of the stops we passed by on the tour but to all visiting tourists, it's a good tour to be on to see different tourist spots in San Diego and just make a mental note of the places you want to return to. I basically booked this tour to be able to ride a segway versus learning more about Downtown San Diego. Using the segways was incredibly fun and after a while, the initial nervousness of riding the segways disappears and you start to find your comfort level and just enjoy speeding along at 10-12mph. Although, if you're not used to standing for approximately 1 hour, the segway may cause a strain on your legs and feet because you basically stand with your feet planted on the segway for about an hour before the break at the halfway point. Our guide was Ryan and at many points during the tour, he stopped to tell us about the location that we were at and a little history about the place. He was very helpful and always made sure that no one was left behind. I would definitely take a segway tour again and I may want to take the Advanced Tour of La Jolla next time. read more

Just finished the La Jolla tour; it was fantastic. Both my daughter(15) and elderly parents(70+) enjoyed themselves. We definitely will do more tours in the future. Ryan was great on our La Jolla tour. James was great last year on our downtown San Diego tour. On these tours you see far more of La Jolla/San Diego than you'll see driving or walking. This is really fun! I went on the La Jolla Segway tour from 11ish-1pm and our tour guides (Ryan and ?) took us basically all around La Jolla. I wasn't really excited at first since I was obligated to go with my family, but it turned out to be really fun once you get the hang of it :P The weather was nice, not too hot/cold and water bottles were provided. Overall, I would totally recommend this place and totally worth it if you find a deal off Groupon or something. Plus the tour guides were chill and funny! BTW when you're looking for the place, it's a small tiny gray looking shack/building next to an art store. read more

Not only did I change my mind about the idea of a Segway tour being lame-- it was totally awesome-- but I also got a quick and easy tour of La Jolla in a very unique way. Our tour guide, Ryan, was particularly helpful in terms of preparing us to operate the Segways, especially with our whole group being beginners. I must say, the husband and I were very impressed with our segway tour and were even more impressed with how awesome of a tour guide Ryan was! I discovered We Love Tourists through Groupon and I was kind of pushing the husband to go on this tour for months. I guess we and other people who haven't tried a segway have this conception that segways aren't the coolest thing to toodle around in but as we scooted around La Jolla with our sexy helmets, I was thinking, wow, I'm so glad we did this! All I have to say is, "Don't knock it till you've tried it!" We are semi new to San Diego and thought we knew all of the things that La Jolla had to offer but Ryan showed us so much more than we even knew about. We got the Groupon to take the tour of La Jolla. My parents were going to be visiting from out of town and they can't walk a lot, so this seemed like a good activity for them. The communication with the owner when I booked the tour was great. He was friendly and responsive. I was told I would get an email confirmation 2-3 days before the tour, telling us where to meet. The day before, I still had no confirmation so I sent him an email. The next morning I still had no notice, so I called his mobile phone and office phone and left messages. later, just 2.5 hours before the tour and we still had not been notified of where to meet. I was starting to get worried. I even found him on Facebook and sent him a message there begging for him to send us info on where to meet! Finally the email came and everything was ok. But if he hadn't sent this email, you would be reading a very different review right now! I hope they get their communication sorted out. They are a new company so it was hopefully just a one-time hiccup. We showed up to their office in La Jolla, which was brand new - they hadn't even really moved in yet. Our tour guy was very patient and laid back. He put up with our stupid jokes. We started with a brief training on how to ride the segways before we took off. It was totally different than I thought it would be. I thought you controlled segways by squeezing the handles or something, but it is actually totally controlled by which way you lean on your feet. After you ride for a while, it becomes second nature. My parents had a tougher time riding them and both of them sort of fell off at one time or another. Fortunately they caught on. I was worried for them at first that they might get hurt. Riding the segways is awesome. It was a gorgeous day and the La Jolla Cove area was CRAZY packed. We had to stop a lot and go really slow to move through all the people. I would recommend perhaps booking a tour at a day and time when there might not be as many people out. I think we just hit an extraordinarily busy day on a holiday weekend! I thought the tour was just long enough, although I would have liked to be able to go fast more often. I understand it's just not possible in a crowded area, but of course everyone wants to go fast. :) All in all, it was a lot of fun and my parents LOVED it. I got to a few places in La Jolla I hadn't seen before. I would def recommend this company to others. read more

This was my first time on a Segway tour. Ryan our tour guide did an amazing job of making sure each of us in the group was comfortable with the Segway before heading out. He was a great tour guide stopping for photos and giving some not so well known facts about the La Jolla area. I liked the length of the tour and the laid back nature of Ryan to not rush us past the beautiful scenery and on such a fabulous day. Cannot wait to use them again. read more
