WEBS should thank its lucky stars that it's seen as THE go-to for yarn, because the customer service is atrocious. I've stood at the main checkout counter for ten minutes before someone meanders over and asks me, "Oh, are you ready to check out?" That being said, the yarn selection is wide, the prices are reasonable, and the warehouse -- oh, the warehouse -- I could get lost in there for hours if I wasn't a pattern-oriented knitter. And, luckily, I can make my way around a yarn store without getting lost or needing help, so for the most part, I can ignore the staff and go on my merry way (except for that whole checkout debacle). Don't make WEBS your first yarn shop experience -- make sure you know what you're doing and talk to another yarn shop owner if you need guidance. Only when you are comfortable enough to make yarn-buying decisions should you make the pilgrimage to WEBS. It's big, it's beautiful, but it's overwhelming, and the people that work there won't help you one iota. read more

Let's just put it this way: I'm allergic to wool and I *still* made the pilgrimage out here from Boston. Thanks to the miracle of anti-histamines and a variety of non-wool yarns, I was not disappointed. I ventured out in a cramped sedan with 4 others with varying levels of interest in the trip, From one member of the party who went mostly and admittedly to appease his ever-knitting significant other to said significant other and a small craft business owner, every member of our crew found something interesting, entertaining, or useful inside Webs. Regardless of skill level, Webs has virtually everything one would want in a yarn shop. By its own admission, it's more like a warehouse. The racks of yarn stretch out in the back where you can find bulk deals. The main part of the store is neatly laid out and abuzz with pattern-sharing and color sampling. This place is iconic to a point that it generates its own culture. Have a question about a stitch? Unsure of what will work best for your project? Super-excited about limited edition hand-dyed yarn? Ask/gush away and you'll find perfect strangers smiling and offering to help in addition to the staff. My sole complaint is that there is nothing for needlepoint. It's not their market, perhaps, but I was hoping to make some finds there. I think the best thing about Webs is how it doesn't neglect traditional methods. Instead it supports them! I drove 800 miles to try and purchase a spinning wheel here. While in the wheel corner of the store, I received a call that the smoke alarm in my house had gone off, and had my mask lowered an inch below my mouth so the caller could hear me. Rather than offer to help me, a store associate(gray hair and wearing clogs) walked by, seeing me on the phone, and said "I need you to pull your mask up!"So, I am leaving and will purchase a wheel and supplies elsewhere. This is not about the issue of wearing masks, it's about poor customer service and poor communication. If you shop here, don't expect help from any store associate. Are you a fiberholic? Do you knit, crochet, or weave? (am i leaving out any fiber related hobbies?) If you play with yarn at all, then this is your mecca. Webs (www.yarn.com) has been a long time enabler for me, even when I didn't live within driving distance. Their catalog and online website are very organized and informative... and kept current. But ordering online or via phone does not compare to visiting in person. The front of the store looks like a nice, if not larger than usual, yarn store. Then you head to the back... the warehouse. They have grocery carts back there. GROCERY CARTS. Because you will want THAT much yarn. Don't forget to check out the clearance specials, and don't be shy to ask for help. They are MORE than happy to help you spend your $$. My advice: go to the website, make a list. STICK WITH THE LIST, or you'll end up with a car full of yarn. This is a dangerous place to go if you are on any kind of budget. Very dangerous. WEBS has literally the best selection of yarn in the country, and the best prices too. Discounts for buying in bulk (dangerous!) and a fantastic sale section with great deals on discontinued yarn (dangerous!) Their in-house yarn brand, Valley Yarns, is also gorgeous. I knit a sweater from their sock yarn Huntington, and its just incredible. If you only want to buy a few things, I recommend ordering online, because once you set foot in the store you will need the discipline of a jedi to resist buying one of everything. But, if you have some money to burn and a yarn stash to build, schedule a couple hours (the store is HUGE) and treat yourself to yarn-induced BLISS. Also, this place is dangerous because it has such a great selection that your local yarn shop will never be able to compare. I live over an hour away, so only stop here on special occasions, and prefer to support the couple of smaller yarn shops closer to home. However, WEBS is such a great company that you absolutely need to stop in if you are in the area. Pros include this company becoming perhaps the largest yarn retailer in the United States apart from the craft shops like Michaels. Accordingly, their flagship retail store in Northampton has everything - including many yarns you thought you could only dream of. The retail location in Northampton is the Walmart of yarn stores. It's huge and very well-stocked. I never found the staff to be very attentive although I will say that they are here and they are attentive with some people. Visiting from Boston involves a nice drive. You can visit Smith College's Museum of Art as well as the shops along the main thoroughfare in Northampton while there. Cons are the staff in the retail shop can, at best, neglect minority shoppers. At worst, I have been racially harassed by staff in the store. On my first visit, the staff people were asking everyone but me if they were finding everything okay. I noticed a Latina woman with a child also come into the store and they appeared to be neglectful of her as well. On my last visit, one of the staff members commented to another that I had a funny smell about me. When I got to register to pay, I was asked for ID. No one else in line was asked for ID when they paid. Unfortunately, WEBS is buying up many other yarn retailers. A staff person in the store was telling someone that they just brought a large yarn retailer in Manhattan. So, they don't mind taking our money as long as we stay away from the town where they live? Wow. In short, it has to be really, really hard for me to get something elsewhere for me to buy it here. read more

If I were on a diet, I wouldn't want to hang out in a cupcake bakery. Likewise, knitters on a budget should stay far far away from this paradise of yarn. Theoretically, you could walk in with your list, get what you need, and get out but chances are that you'll get distracted by all of the pretty colors, and start touching things and next thing you know you've wandered into the clearance warehouse and ohmygosh I can't pass up that deal! Was driving around western Mass for some leaf peeping and saw their giant sign on I-91. It was excellent luck for me and crappy luck for my loving husband because I have just taken up knitting and am about to embark on my first project which requires super bulky yarn that Joann's is unlikely to carry. I had actually been checking out their website the day before. Anyway, Webs is a bright, well-organized store with plenty of room to browse. It's easy to drive by after a left off the highway and a sneaky driveway on your left less than a half mile down. Despite being a knitting newbie, I felt comfortable browsing with such clear signage. I was overwhelmed by the warehouse because I didn't want to go crazy without completing my first project. I still bought two skeins of a beauteous yarn that I couldn't resist. I was happy no one asked to help me (just a weird aversion I have to customer service) and there was only a short wait at checkout. I found my checker to be a tiny, elvish hipster knitting chick who fit in perfectly with her surroundings and was very pleasant, if slightly spacey, to deal with. I can see why hard-core knitters will make a pilgrimage through neighboring states to get here. Hopefully, my knitting lessons 'stick.' read more

Oh WEBS, how I adore you! Everyone who works at webs is friendly and knowledgeable. Going to WEBS is like going to a party because there are always people talking yarn, discussing patterns, knitting, and enjoying themselves. It almost goes without saying that the selection cannot be beat and that everything is quality. I have been utterly spoiled by WEBS and ever since moving out the Valley I have not (and do not expect to find) a comparable knitting store. WEBS, with its wonderful discounts (including a student one), is responsible for my large stash of yarn and my even larger stash of UFOS. You win some, you lose some. It should also be noted, that WEBS truly does have a yarn warehouse of EPIC AND FAIRYTALE proportions in the back, and that it is truly worth checking out for the unexpected bag of Rowan yarn that will become your new favorite sweater. WEBS is mecca to every knitter I know. I feel lucky to be this close to it, although the drive for me is 1 hour +. There is a huge selection of yarns, from hand-dyed, handspun works of art to larger lots of commercial brands. If you are planning a sweater or blanket, the warehouse in the back has deep discounts if you buy in bulk. They have accessories for weavers, knitters, spinners, etc. I recently bought a top of the line swift originally priced at $90, it was on sale for $74. The best boyfriend in the world got me a gift card for my birthday and drove me out there for the day to buy it. It was the best present ever. I can't wait to use it. Some of the accessories and yarn are overpriced, but WEBS also has frequent Groupon deals, sales, etc. And you can't beat the prices in that warehouse of theirs. I will say my experiences with the staff have been hit or miss. I've met lovely helpful people and knit-clad loonies with attitude. Meh. I have been going to WEBS for years now. I am a knitter who is lucky enough to have WEBS in my neck of the woods. If you are a knitter, weaver, spinner, or need yarns and notions for any project this is the mecca. The store is large! The variety of yarns is huge, it can even be overwhelming when trying to narrow down what would work best. This is not your cozy knitting store. When you think you have seen all that there is, go past the area that looks like the retail store. There is a vast warehouse of yarns. Here you can find items in bulk as well as discontinued/discounted yarns. The staff is quick to point out if there is something similar that you can find in the warehouse to save you some money from the front retail area. WEBS offers a discount when your purchase over $100 of yarn. I know this from personal experience! The staff is very knowledgeable. My only issue when I go there is that the store is usually busy and the staff can be spread thin. You can find the staff bouncing back and forth between customers. WEBS offers a variety of classes for beginners to experts in various subjects. I have used there drop in clinic when stumped with an issue. While the front room has amazing yarns at regular prices, if you gets into the back warehouse that's when the trouble begins. I got about twice a year to stock up. I can get amazing yarns for Walmart prices. And get much better quality. Where else can I spend $200 and walk out with about $800 worth of yarn. They also have discounts on their webpage yarn.com It's probably a good thing I'm a solid 2 hours from this place, otherwise I'd spend my life here. I have never visited their store, but I have ordered from their website a lot. I especially like the fact that they have a large selection, and the fact that their return policy is pretty much no hassle. However, it seems to really take a long time to get an order processed and shipped. Also, I wish they had a reasonably priced shipping option. I recently ordered from them, and they shipped UPS sure post, which in my experience takes forever. USPS priority would be a lot faster for me, but they either don't offer this option, or it is ridiculously expensive. Yarn doesn't weigh that much. I'm extremely disappointed, having learned from WEBS customer service that the yarn I ordered 5 days ago is actually not in stock, in spite of the fact that I received a confirmation invoice for my order AND according to the website, there were 20 balls in stock. Had I not phoned up to ask when I could expect my order to arrive, I would not have learned that they only have one ball and not the five that I ordered. Moreover, I called WEBS the morning that I ordered to ask about the color. After being put on hold at customer service, I ended up having to leave a detailed voicemail and asked for a call back. NO ONE ever called me back so I went ahead and ordered the yarn. A warning to others: according to the woman at customer service, the supply numbers online are not accurate. OMGWTF YARNGASM! That is how I felt upon walking into Webs for the first time. They have a phenomenal selection of everything for your knitting or crocheting needs. They had books that I didn't expect to find anywhere and had already resigned myself to buying online. The back room is especially amazing - if there's some yarn you need on the main sales floor, you might be able to find something similar in the back for a fraction of what you would have paid otherwise (sometimes something even better). Don't get me wrong, it's possible to spend a buttload of money on yarn here with minimal effort, but not as much as you would have spent on the same stuff elsewhere. The front of the building is a very well-stocked and easily browsable yarn store, with a wide variety of quality yarns for many budgets. The back of the shop is literally a yarn warehouse, with many closeout deals. The volume discounts for books and yarn can be quite useful if you're planning a larger project such as a sweater or a blanket, or just like to buy lots of yarn. I've been to the store many times and although things can sometimes be kind of chaotic on tent sale weekend (in a good way, really!) I've always had really good customer service from the staff. SO MUCH YARN. It's a local yarn shop with a huge department store feel, with almost nothing but yarn. The back room is huge and has great yarn for ridiculously low prices - some as low as $2.50. It's a little overwhelming, especially for a newbie knitter, but it's a great place. I felt like I had died and gone to yarn heaven. My only regret was that I did not arrive there early enough in the day and only had an hour to look. This is a big, bright store with lots of light to see the yarn. The selection is huge and I would recommend coming prepared - like having an idea of what yarn you are looking for - and how much you will need. I think a little preplanning would be best so you're not overwhelmed and you can take full advantage of what they have to offer, especially if you're coming from a distance like I was. But- browsing is just as nice too! I agree with some of the other reviewer's that WEBS is not particularly an intimate, warm and fuzzy yarn store but that's perfectly okay. For any serious knitter, spinner or weaver, WEBS is without a doubt worth the trip. The only thing I found was a little confusing was how they had their yarn set up as it didn't seem to be very clear - but that could just be because it was my first time there. Oh yes, and they have very comfy chairs for your husband, boyfriend, or companion to sit in while they wait for you. A big plus! read more

Sooooooo. I have been coming to WEBS for years. Recently I encountered a few issues. FIRST, the selection is amazing. No comparison anywhere. However having said that I think their policy for returns is confusing and a bit ridiculous. I made an online purchase and tried to return it to the store. "Returns gladly accepted". Well not quite. You need to mail it back if you bought it online. They refunded my original method of payment. So one wasted 45 minute trip. Ok. So I won't buy online anymore. While I was there I foolishly bought more yarn. When I got home I realized I had something very similar. My bad. Since returns are gladly accepted I decided to make the ride once again to return it. I was offered a store credit only?!?? Come on people. So if you buy online you get a refund but if you buy in the store you only get a store credit??? What's that about. I read the web site. The very nice cashier pointed out on the receipt (a paragraph that I'm sure most people don't read) where it says store credit only. Bye bye WEBS. In this day and age, a flexible return policy is necessary. 3 stars because the selection is so nice. I'll buy elsewhere. There's plenty of online options. read more

I loved having this kind of selection down the road when we lived there. I bumped the review down to 4 stars because they aren't here in IL, and I miss them, but then back up to 5 because they ship. Webs is an absolute must visit for the yarn enthusiast. The selection is fascinating and the sheer amount of yarn (and needles) is truly a sight to behold! Note that going to Webs is not a typical LYS experience. I hate to say it but it feels more like an airport/bargain basement than a LYS and makes me wonder how much the people who work there actually like their customers. I have been there twice and first time was a yarn-fume-haze and second time was a recent Saturday just after Christmas. I arrived about 1.5 hours before closing and they had an end-of-year sale ongoing, and plenty of customers in the shop. I came in with my husband, his friend and his friend's kid. My husband proceeded to demonstrate a 'magic trick' showing our friend's kid how the swift works. One of the staff members was extremely rude to him. I can appreciate not wanting people to mess around with the swift but it could have been handled better. In the meantime, we happen to have a high-end wooden swift at home so my husband is well familiar with swifts - no he is not some idiot hooligan who visits yarn stores to wreck havoc. This made me feel icky about staying there and shopping but I did. Also noted, the swift they have for customers to use is one of those dinky metal and plastic travel-swifts which doesn't make it feel like they like us, especially since Webs sell better quality wooden ones can't they get one of those out for us? It would certainly hold up to use a lot better than the dinky metal one. I had to chase after staff to ask questions about buttons. Out of the 4 staff I interacted with one was very nice and helpful but the other 3 made me gave me that airport feeling. Starting 1/2 hour before closing I felt like I was being pushed out. I was frequently reminded of the closing time and felt like I was being watched. It gave me a feeling I haven't had in a long time. Like maybe I wasn't profiled as your typical knitter or a serious customer because I look young but that couldn't be further from the truth. I really hope this experience was a one-off - perhaps staff were tired because of the sale so maybe it would be good to try and time your visit when there is not a special sale (but this shouldn't be necessary and certainly won't always be possible). Maybe the staff need some kind of a zen relaxation room they can retreat to when they're feeling tired to prevent them from getting cranky with customers (which should be regarded by their management as unacceptable). But maybe this is what you get when there's such a focus on bargains. I'm sure that working there is a hard job during these sales and maybe it sours the people working there but that doesn't make poor customer service ok. Perhaps Webs could try shorter shifts during sale events or some other mechanism to keep their staff from burning out along with sending home the message that customers are a gift that must be treated well and anything less is unacceptable. Webs is an amazing place that I want so much to feel good about. I really hope that my current sentiments can be reversed in the future and that this isn't a common experience for other Webs customers. read more

Awful customer service which I experienced twice. Yarn.com regularly have wrong inventory information on their website, showing in stock items which happened to be backordered. They also charged my card 2 months later after the original order without my permission for the "backordered" item which I cancelled. This is seriously one of the best yarn stores ever. I'm originally from CA, but anytime a family member of friend (who is a knitter!) visits, I drag her to Webs. The selection is huge, so you can always find something that fits your needs. The staff is friendly, and the customer service is superb. No matter what your question is, the staff is able to help. Everyone there geniunly loves the fiber crafts, and their enthusiasm definitely shows. I love the automatic discounts (10% for students, 20% for purchases over $60, 25% for purchases over $120, etc.). read more

I have been to the actual store. Amazing amount of yarn, kitting tools, books, patterns, I can stay there for hours.... But be warned, their internet service is very SLOW. It has been SLOW for a half dozen times I used their internet service. For example, I ordered items from WEBS and another well known yarn shop in Nevada on Sunday. Well, you guessed it, Nevada shipment arrived on Wednesday and Webs order, well... it's Friday night now and have not even heard from them... (all in stock items and same shipping method. AND I live maybe 2 hours away from Webs.) So if you are planning to buy stuff from Webs online and you need it rather quick, make sure to add at least one week to your plan! However, if you are not on hurry, volume discount is a great plus! Their web site is great, so I kind of don't understand why it takes sooooo long to ship out the stuff. ???? read more

This website was once my favorite place to buy yarn because of their pricing and selection. Sadly, I recently had a horrible experience with their website ordering process. I ordered yarn for a baby blanket and received an e-mail confirming the order and stating that my yarn should ship in 3 or 4 days. SIX DAYS later, I got an e-mail message saying they didn't have the yarn they sold me. No offer of compensation for the fact that I missed out on several other sales of this same yarn, no nothing except for a "sorry for the inconvenience." DO NOT ORDER from this website expecting to actually get your yarn. You "might" get your yarn, if they actually have it, and if they don't sell it to someone else meanwhile. I won't be buying yarn from this company ever again. They need to fix their website ordering process. If other websites can tell you whether or not a product is in stock, they can do the same, they just choose to use outdated/inferior software. Very bad experience. read more

i recently made an online purchase of a Valley Yarn Christmas Stocking kit. I receive 3 skeins of yarn in a post office bag for the price of $19.99. To me a kit includes instructions, and yarn all packaged in a bag, usually clear plastic and resealable. I paid $6.67 a skien. i was insulted to recieve and order that appeared to be given very little thought. I did a little investigating on their Web site and realized if I had ordered the yarn as 3 separate skiens that sell for $6.49 and downloaded the free pattern it would have cost me less. sure it is not a lot, and I wouldn't have cared if my item has arrived at what resembled a kit, with a pattern. what I received was a lame excuse for a kit and i thought insulting to me as a customer. I emailed and received a reply and they are mailing me instructions and also gave directions to download. Received the email after I left work. I do not have a printer at home. I am giving them a 1 star for customer service. I have been an online and in store customer of Webs for years. their yarn selection is wonderful with beautiful displays. the in store staff is pleasant but very busy. they may show you where an item is but have very little time for any further assistance. this may be different at 9am on a Monday, but I, like many relay on weekends. over the years I have shop less in store and on line at webs because they have poor customer service. read more
