This humble little place was exactly what I needed today. Simple and good - nothing else. No lingering for a chef to arrange my food just so in a take-out container. No fussing. No endless search for a place to park. Just in and out and on my way. I'm glad I only ordered one hot dog as it turned out they use 1/4lb dogs and 2 would have been more than I was looking for. But my dog was great - nicely grilled and no char, soft bun, perfectly topped with ketchup, mustard, relish and onion. My onion rings where great too. I've driven by Weenie Beenie for years and have no clue why I've never stopped before today. This place reminds me of so many little spots I've found great eats growing up and in my travels. I even love the 10 commandments (in English and Spanish) posted on the front under the counter. With other Yelpers touting the BBQ and spying several items on the menu that sound hearty and yummy - I know this is the first of many Beenie trips. For those feeling that WB is in "the ghetto" all I can say is you really need to travel a bit more and see some inner cities. This place has obviously stood the test of time, and somehow managed to stave off development and frou frou haute dogs. It looks like it was pulled from downtown Chicago and plopped in the middle of nowhere. Chili dog was good and very satisfying. Best DC has to offer? Maybe. Quintessential? Holy shit -- I've just read 19 reviews of this classic eatery and not a single one mentions the best thing they serve. People, do you want to try some eastern North Carolina barbecue without traveling to, uh, eastern North Carolina? Well, you can get a mighty tasty eastern NC chopped bbq sandwich right here in good ol' Shirlington. It may not be cooked over hickory logs like the very best NC cue, but it's a damned good approximation of what you can get down there east of I-95. They even give you little packets of Texas Pete hot sauce, which is exactly what you'd get down yonder in Goldsboro or Wilson. And don't forget the slaw on top of your sandwich. read more

I'm a big fan of Weenie Beanie, I stop there for breakfast at least once a week when I'm early for work. I usually get the sausage, egg and cheese on toast and a water, it's delicious! For the price you pay, it's great, fast and hot! Sure I've had their hot dogs and yea, the bun is a little messy, but it's a divey place, what did you expect? Like I said, for the price, it's good and gets me to where i need to be. The service is usually friendly, and I'm a regular now. I made the plunge and finally stopped by Weenie Beenie for breakfast. Ordered a scrapple & egg sandwich. Having never tried scrappie, I had no idea it consists of a mush of pork scraps and trimmings combined with cornmeal and wheat flour. The texture resembles a soft meat loaf but with a bland taste. After this brief scrappie experience, I think I'll stick with bacon, ham, or sausage. The service was great. Only waited two minutes for my sandwich. I stopped by this little place after getting an emissions test across the street. I had a half chili smoke and onion rings. Pretty good for the price. The chili was slightly greasy (as it should be) and the sausage was about the best I can remember having on a bun. The only reason I knocked a star off is I wish they had some better condiments. Have to be honest, i'm in no rush to come back here. I would like give this place more stars for ambiance, but that would be dishonest. Came here with a couple of friends for breakfast last week. I'm from NYC and this was my first time visiting DC. We were couchsurfing near by, and we needed to fix a flat. As we were driving past this little shack on the way to the tire repair store, I knew I had to at least taste one of these chili dogs. I'm a sucker for hole in the wall dives, and Weenie fit the bill to a T. I convinced my group to go back, and we got advice from some of the locals. Apparantly half stack is the way to go. I ordered a half stack, a peach cobbler, and split some fries. Basically the half stack with chili was tasty, in a what the hell am I eating, did this come of out of a vending machine way. Sweetly reminscent of any other highly dubious what is in my food hot dog shack. The taste itself was somewhere between homeless shelter and nathan's. But after all that, i'd definitely get it again. The cobbler was slimey. And the fries tasted like they were deep fried in a vat of hydrogenated oil. Yummy, but probably not home made. All and all this was definitely worth the experience, but the food was pretty tastless and cheap. Best part... I have never seen an illegal work station before. Watching all the hopefulls run at every truck that pulls up was something I never knew happened in real life. This place definitely get's 1 star for atmosphere. Weenie Beenie is a tweener...maybe 4 stars. I'm undecided. I like divey places and this is a good one. Everything appears clean on the inside and the food is fresh so no worries there. Based on recommendations I got the Carolina Barbecue Sandwich. It was actually very tasty despite the mush consistency due to completely shredding the meat (see some of the pics). I'll be back for another one though. I've also had the Half Smoke which isn't too bad - though I've had better quality sausages (lots of hard pieces of fat). I went by for breakfast and got the Bacon, Egg & Cheese sandwich. While good it was completely unimpressive as it is the same thing I make for myself on a Saturday morning: 2 slices white toast, a fried egg, 2x strips of bacon, American cheese. All served up for $3.24...what?? I like divey places because they tend to be cheap. Weenie Beenie is a little too expensive based on what you get. It gets 3 stars. read more

This place is in a crappy location....which makes the whole experience unique...just remember the best places to eat are sometimes the hole in the wall joint....and this is one of those places. I am new to the area and happened to be working off Shillington. I forgot to pack my lunch and didn't want the same ol' subway lunch. I searched yelp and the reviews spoke for them self. It was also within walking distance of the office I was at, a additional bonus for the new girl in town. I couldn't decide what I wanted so I got a half smoke fully loaded, a cheese burger royak, home fries and sweet tea. I knew I was getting way more food than I could eat but it all sounded good. Being from MN I had never even heard of a half smoke but Holy moley that was delicious and gobbled up before I could blink. The cheeseburger and home fries were delicious as well. The sweet tea was perfectly sweet but not too sweet and the service was friendly and fast with a smile. I think it would be deliciously dangerous for my waistline if I worked near Weenie Beanie every day but definitely enjoyed the treat and will get it again next time I am in the area. read more

I could have done without the fries and the cheese but the burger was good, and greasy. This place is pretty gross. Don't get me wrong; I love a dive, but this is on the bottom of the barrel. I went here on the way from an audition at Signature Theatre. I got the half-smoke with chili, "all-the-way," and a cup of bean soup, because why not? The half-smoke was delicious, as all half-smokes are. But "all-the-way" really means... nothing. My dog came with chili, as advertised, nothing else. The chili was mediocre, but dribbled grease (not the tasty kind, just the greasy kind), and the soup was a joke. I asked for the ingredients before I got it, and was told it contained beans, water, salt, and pepper. I was hoping for a stripped-down taste revolution, but all I got was watery bean-goo. After 25 years, I have finally tried a chili dog from this place. Located right next to the dog park, the husband and I decided to swing by to grab a dog before taking our dog to the park (HAAAA- see what i did there). Anyways, the Beenie is located next to the day laborer's location. Very clean, they even have flowers on top of their trash cans to add some freshness to the place. There were tables to the left of the Beenie in case you wanted to eat there. I grabbed a chili dog with cheese and onions while the hubby grabbed the same but added a chili half smoked dog with cheese and onions as well. For all 3, plus a soda, the total came up to $13 which is pretty nice. As I looked around, they also had many other items on the menu for very low prices (you can find a picture of the menu somewhere on here). They even had pastries right at the register (INCLUDING CARROT CAKE. YUMMM) The chili was absolutely delicious. I don't know if I'm jumping to conclusions (mainly because the gentlemen that took our order was Jamaican/ Carribean) but I'm assuming there are Caribbean spices in it. Either way, it had a flavor that I haven't tried before. Kick but not spicy but spice-y, if that makes sense. The cheese was the regular square american cheese that you can pick up from Giant, same with the buns. Hubby really liked the half-smoke. Cheap, messy, delicious and full of flavor. I'd pick this over Ben's Chili Bowl any day. read more

It's Weenie Beenie, a reliable, quick, unassuming place that makes some of the best food I've had for the price point (and maybe the next one up too). Before I start, understand it isn't supposed to be super healthy, fancy, or anything close to that. It's food thatll remind you of your childhood down in the Carolina's. You can't go wrong with most things on the menu, they're all great deals, and the grill cooks know how to char the meet to perfection. The most impressive thing so far is the burgers. I love five guys for all the toppings galore you can put on, but if you had to compare simple burger with lettuce, tomato, cheese, and a few other toppings Weenie Beenie would take the cake. So it turns out I have a huge love for all hotdogs.....unfortunately I was not impressed. Weenie Beenie is close to home so I was hoping that it would be great and save me much longer trips around the area. I ordered 2 chili smokes with everything and onion rings. The first thing I noticed is just how small they were. At that point I was glad I ordered 2. Then I took my first bite......it was chewy a little rubbery and didn't have much flavor. Now for all the things that were on it I would have expected something to have some kick but nothing. So I tried the onion rings which were really good, there is nothing more disappointing than biting into your onion ring and it's completely soggy, I will say these were cooked exactly right. After enjoying a couple rings I switch back to my other chili smoke figuring maybe that previous one was just a flaw....nope same result. I will probably give them one more try before writing them off considering the other reviews I've seen here but I'm not expecting much. read more
