For a vegetarian, the options are very limited HOWEVER, being an Asian myself, the taste was very close to home. It was spicy, warm, and earthy feeling. The protein is well seasoned, the broth has a richness that sneaks up on you and the noodles are the perfect level of chewy. Our group of four loved each item we had, and let me say that the beer steins were the cleanest glasses I have ever seen. Two beer options include Sapporo and Asahi. We had the spicy ramen (one with pork and one with chicken), miso ramen, and Tonkotsu ramen, which were all served promptly. We started with the fried tofu, pork dumplings, and seaweed salad. Found this quiet little shop here on Yelp after searching for a good place to eat in Indianapolis during the National FFA Conference. Most places had a line out the door and an hour + wait time, but we were able to order and receive our to-go food in 15-20 minutes tops. I have been wanting to try this since they opened. I got the spicy ramen. I loved it, it was definitely enough for two meals though, i took the other 1/2 home for lunch. I will say the atmosphere was not super awesome, there were a ton of young kids in there working and they were just standing around and being very loud, which i did not appreciate, that would be the only criticism. the food was very good, spicy but not too spicy. I feel that some of the recent reviews are rather harsh. My impressions are: yes, perhaps a soft open would have allowed them to get their sea legs. But with that said I found the staff friendly and eager to acknowledge and serve. I've seen it mentioned in some reviews that it's not immediately apparent how one proceeds to be helped. True, this is a business offering desserts and ramen. Dessert station is at the front of the space and sit down restaurant for the Japanese entrees is further back. Upon entering the young lady up front asked which I was there for and directed me to my young server Wade. Service was very fast. It seems the kitchen is in the basement because that's where all my food came from once prepared. The Agedashi Tofu is NOT what it says it is. Their version is fried cubes of tofu served with what can best be described as a spicy Japanese barbecue sauce on the side. The tofu was hot out of the oil and crunchy. All good there. But to be Agedashi there needs to be a savory dashi broth and that is missing. Also absent the garnish of scallions, daikon, nori, ginger, bonito flakes or sesame seeds. I like fried tofu and this was good. I love Agedashi and this was not that. Not sure if they are dumbing it down for the Midwest palette or just skimping on the ingredients. But either call it fried tofu or rename it on the menu. I tried the Yamitsuki Ramen. To start with it was served in a large, beautiful clay bowl. Perfect for retaining heat. I went with the roasted pork chashu over chicken. The bowl was presented beautifully with small piles of sliced scallions, sliced wood ear mushrooms, fresh crunchy bean sprouts, bamboo slices, half soft boiled egg and, of course, the noodles which are a thinner variety. The pork slices were prepared from pork belly which was sous-vide for tenderness and then grilled giving them depth of flavors to counter their unctuous texture. The real star of the dish is not the noodle, to my surprise , it was the absolutely delicious milky and smooth pork broth. Cook clean pork bones at a low boil for 20 hours, free the marrow and fat and it transcends one to a new culinary plateau. My only tiny gripe is I wish the temperature of the both was hotter. I don't want anyone getting burned, including myself- but it would have been appreciated. I look forward to dining again and cannot wait to try more offerings on the menu. I am confident that chef/owner Qi Biao Dong won't let me down. I am so happy to have a Japanese ramen shop in the mile square downtown. read more

We have wanted to try this place since it opened and we finally did. My husband and I with our two sons, 7 and 3, had dinner there on a Friday night. The service was prompt and friendly and everything was streamed lined very well. My youngest son was very intrigued by our waiter, whose name was Nathan. We started with edamame, which is a favorite with my children. We each had an entree and it was enough food to fill us up. My husband had the yamitsuki ramen and he really liked all the flavors together. I had the curry udon with karrage chicken and it was a bit spicy but nothing I couldn't handle. My seven year old had the shrimp tempura udon and loved the shrimp, which came on the side, and gave him the chance to dip everything so it wouldn't get soggy before he could eat it. My three year old had veggie tempura don because he really likes white rice. He enjoyed the rice and radish pickle but not really the veggie cake and they did forget his soft boiled egg. Overall, we enjoyed our dinner and service and plan on coming back soon. read more

Maybe this is what I get for ordering non-ramen from a place with "ramen" in the name, but the "curry" was horrible. Dry (not enough curry), weirdly colored meat, topped with crinkle cut pickles? Not at all like the Japanese curry I think it was supposed to be. The bao and shishito peppers were just OK. My family thought the ramen and udon were better, though the udon texture was off. Overall, I doubt we'll be back. I wish the place would pick a cuisine (Japanese, Chinese, Korean) and stick with it or really embrace fusion and do something interesting and new. read more

I've been looking for new spots to try out that includes udon soup on their menus and heard that this place just recently opened up at the heart of downtown. They even have crepes here! Sounds promising. When you walk in there's two sections serving crepes in the front and ramen in the back. The inside is very nice, cozy feeling. For food my boyfriend got the Pork Karai Ramen, portion is OK for him, he likes to add the chili paste to add some spice to it. I got the Pork Chasu Udon, literally reminded me of packaged udon my family would get at the asian grocery store. The basic green onions and narutomaki was the only thing in the food, the pork is separate but I was a little disappointed at the lack of veggies in this soup which is why it reminded me of packaged udon. Food was decent not the best but they are new so I'll probably give them another try in the future. I also got a mango deluxe crepe to end the night. Wasn't a fan of the cream spread, the mango was still a little ripe. Needs work but they did great with making it, I'd probably try something else next time I'm here. read more

I went for an early evening run tonight. It was more chilly and windy than than I expected. An hour after I got home my hands were still numb and I felt cold to the bone despite the 75 degree indoor temperature. Enter Wei Ramen. Too tired to cook and craving something warm I ordered the Vegetable Tempura Don for carry out (Unfortunately they were sold out of the veggie pancake to add with it.). This proved to be just the delicious, warm comfort food I needed! This is the kind of food you wish you could make but getting it take out makes it a special treat. Even the sticky white rice is more tasty than mine made with my fancy fuzzy logic rice cooker. The tempera batter on the veggies is very light which I loved, the spicy side of kimchi added a nice warm kick, and the fried egg a tasty (not greasy) touch of flavorful protein. The meal included a mixed green salad but that's for breakfast with eggs tomorrow - tonight, just some warming comfort food for me! Can't wait for more cold weather runs and more excuses to sample the Wei Ramen menu! read more

I can't believe this place has 4/5 rating. Indy offers other high quality authentic Japanese ramen places at similar prices. My wife and I placed an order of Tonkatsu ramen and curry ramen. She asked for chicken but the ramen came out with pork. She also asked for no scallion but it was still there. Both ramen included way too much ginger slices which dominated the soup taste. The chashu came in generous amount, but it was way thick and lacked flavor. The takiyaki had tiny octopus tips within the huge breaded ball. I live in Lafayette and the ramen place even here is 100 times better, and I was expecting more from my visit to Indy. Highly disappointed. read more

Indianapolis is a tough place to find not just good ramen, but any ramen! So when I saw that Wei Ramen had opened, I became very excited to try. My friend and I went in the evening where we were greeted kindly and attended to regularly. I had the Spicy Chicken Ramen, which I would recommend to anyone looking for a kick, and it was very good. The service was fast, and I might consider this restaurant a bit of a more casual place to come in for a short meal. On a cold, sunny day in January I decided to brave the three block walk to try Wei Ramen for the first time. I have been delaying my first visit to allow this new restaurant to iron out the kinks mentioned in other reviews here. I walked in just before noon and was seated immediately. The place was bustling with a 50/50 mix of crepe eaters and ramen folk. My waiter appeared instantly and took my order: Miso Ramen and a pot of hot tea. My food arrived within 5 minutes. The ramen was quite good, and I will return, but I have a few minor suggestions. 1. The ramen could have been hotter, or maybe I was just cold from the walk. 2. Every ramen house in Tokyo and New York has a small bottle of Togarashi (red pepper flake) on the table...get some. 3. The only hot tea was barley tea?? Really would like to see green or black tea offered. 4. Would have preferred square chopsticks for ramen instead of the round ones (yeah, that's really picky). I really like this place. Good ramen.
