On our way through Meridian on our way west. Found this gem on Yelp. Proudly the oldest restaurant in Mississippi. In the "downtown", but very close to the interstate. Busy but got a spot without wait on the balcony upstairs. Feels a little like New Orleans. Busy bar and good selection of National and local brews on tap. Extensive menu with emphasis on sea food. Once I knew I was having to head to Meridian for work, naturally I scoped out Yelp to see where the good eats are at. Looking at the reviews for Weidmann's, I already had it bookmarked coming into Mississippi. Luck would have it that we went to Weidmann's for lunch on the first day of the trip. Being the oldest operating restaurant in Meridian, naturally you can expect an old-school set up, brick walls and dark, hard wood floors. So the setting is a natural one for a steakhouse. However, I will say that despite being a steakhouse, the menu prices are actually quite nice, especially for lunch. Most dishes we saw were in the $10-12 range. We were greeted nicely by our server and it was recommended by our friend that we try the Fried Green Tomatoes with 1870 sauce. Wow, the Fried Green Tomatoes and the 1870 sauce were just awesome. I probably could have eaten a plate by myself. For my entree, being in the south and close to the coast, I figured the Shrimp and Grits would be a great way to get some southern cooking as well as some seafood in, all in one fell swoop. Like the appetizer we ordered, the entrees were also great. The creme sauce (I assume it is the 1870 sauce, or some combination of it) really made the dish. The great tasting shrimp and bits of ham didn't hurt. My only regret is that we weren't in town long enough to come back again, as their menu has many great options to it. Should I be in Meridian again, I will definitely be coming back to try the dinner menu. So, great food, great atmosphere, and great prices...yup, that's a 5-star review. read more

Took my wife there for Mother's Day brunch on the balcony and the food, service, and overall quality was outstanding! Crab cakes and the muffaletta sandwich were great, as was the gumbo! Excellent experience. Old style restaurant with old style charm. Waiter was Joseph, he was very attentive and had old style manners. Had shrimp & grits. Good size portion, tasted good too. A little different, it had ham and a couple of cherry tomatoes. Only disappointment was the crackers snd peanut butter. The menu said "assortment of crackers" but they were all saltines, and i think somebody dropped the box. read more

This was a great find off I-20 in Downtown Meridian. The staff at our hotel (Fairfield Inn) referred us here for a nice dinner after a long day of driving... am I glad we took the advice. After entering the building you immediately realize you found a true gem. The decor is conservative and highlights the history of the restaurant and the town. We started dinner with the fried green tomatoes with the 1870 sauce (think the sauce for a great stroganoff but with shrimp). My wife had the grilled catfish with crab belvedere (light parmasean and wine cream sauce, red and and green peppers and green onion) with a side of made from scratch Augatin potatoes. I went for the shrimp and cheese grits with a cream sauce with fresh tomatoes. This was amazingly simple with great flavor. The shrimp were perfectly prepared, and the grits were creamy with enough cheese to enhance the flavors of the dish without overwhelming any one ingredient. Service was prompt and pleasant. Everyone was a joy to interact with. Stop here and enjoy a true taste of the south! read more

I went there with a party of 4 for brunch. My parties food was a disaster. Decided to do seating up stairs without a wait. Our waiter was good but whom ever they had cooking in the kitchen must have been a newbie. Food had no seasoning and was bland. I ordered the crab cake with perched egg on a muffin. Muffin was hard! Not good! They also need to give the old place a good dusting and cleaning. read more

I'll start with the positives. The restaurant is very charming and the service was good. Unfortunately, the food was not great. We had fried green tomatoes. They were very dark. They were cooked too quickly so the tomatoes were very hard. They were edible. I had chicken and waffles. The chicken tenders had an awful chemical smell and they tasted like burned rubber. Their cooking oil had obviously gone off. The overly dark tomatoes should have tipped us off. The waffle was stone cold, obviously not freshly made, and spongy. It was also covered in blueberry pie filling instead of fresh blueberries. It was awful. My husband had a quiche with salmon which he said was "ok.l Bottom Line: Go there for the history and the atmosphere and have a cocktail. Skip the food. read more

One of the best shrimp n grits I've ever had: a wonderful mix of bright, savory, salty and briny. Well done, Weidmann's! Wife had the Caesar Salmon -- it was well-dressed, the fish moist. Middle child had the prime rib po'boy: tender, juicy and flavorful. This is a place steeped in local history: it's palpable as soon as one walks in. Super cute place in the downtown area of Meridian. You can tell it's old and historic the moment you walk in the door. Super friendly staff and very attentive wait staff. Wine selection was good with a range of options and price points, we had two bottles and both were great. Dinner was good but nothing to write home about. The desert was definitely the talk of our table. Meridian doesn't have a ton of options, which isn't uncommon in a small town like Meridian. We'll definitely dine here again when in town. read more

Didn't seem like the friendliest and most welcoming bunch. Was told I needed to make a reservation to sit anywhere else besides the bar area. Ok that's cool. Waitress wasn't the nicest. Cup of gumbo was not good. Definitely wasn't close to authentic. Had the extra super-small frozen shrimp probably from Walmart in the gumbo. Shrimp and lobster spring rolls were OK. Didn't have much shrimp and lobster in it though. MAYBEeeeeee...... 2 very small pieces of lobster per egg roll. Cost me $14 though. The steak was good though I must say and so was the au gratin potatoes. Tea was good, lol. read more

We were visiting and google said this was the best restaurant in Meridian so we had to go. It was incredible. I would def stay in this town again just to come here. I had salmon and mashed potatoes so good. Someone else had the blue cheese burger and the home made potato chips. They said it was next level. We also got the filet with the Oscar and wow just wow. I stopped here for lunch on a trip to Hattiesburg. It is the oldest restaurant in Mississippi; I had no idea! It's a large restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating and indoor and outdoor bars. Arrived on a Friday night at 6:30pm and was seated right away. Staff was friendly and checked on us offer. Food was cooked as requested & tasted great. I got the bacon cheeseburger which was a little messy because it was so big, but it didn't bother me to break out the fork and knife to finish up. My wife enjoyed her crab cakes. We got a piece of the black bottom pie and chocolate pecan, they both were great but the pecan I think was a little better. Was a little disappointed that we didn't get the peanut butter crock, but we didn't specifically ask for it, I assumed it came out before the meal. Overall very happy. read more
