First the Good, seasoning, fry taste and steak tenderness were perfect. The Bad, portion for the money and bad wax paper liner under fries and cheese. My order , Loaded Bacon and Cheese Fries add steak PickUp Order. To our dismay the entire bottom cheese layer is and continues to be stuck to the paper liner which makes almost all of the bottom cheese layer inedible. Please ask pickup prep crew to stop lining your pickup boxes with paper that sticks to the cheese fries. Use foil sheets. This has happened on the last 3 orders we've placed from You guys. Second Bad, a full order of Bacon Cheese fries used to fill the entire bottom of the box. It Now it consists of two small handfuls of fries. Not the amount expected for $13. If I'm adding steak for $3-$4 extra I would expect more than 4 small pieces of steak. It used to have 10-12 pieces of steak when the order was $10 a box. I do understand that beef prices have increased but not so much that you skimp too much after raising prices on the order. I'll end on a positive. Sunday Chicken, the Cat is the best door greeter! Plus young ladies that work the front area are polite and personable. They should be recognized. I'll start by saying I've never left a yelp review, because I'm not a crybaby. But I felt my experience with this restaurant must be shared. I order online, to go, because some of my household members prefer eating at home to in the restaurant. I get to the restaurant when my order was scheduled to be prepared, 5:15. The restaurant opens at 5 so I was prepared to wait 15 minutes or so past the scheduled time. I have eaten at this restaurant a number of times, my expectations are appropriately set. I do not expect 5 star food, but this is a steakhouse. When I order a meal from their menu, I do expect the staff at the restaurant to be capable of preparing that meal. Apparently, this is too much to ask of Zack Garvin's. I waited for nearly an hour on 2 burgers, a steak, and fries for all. I am not impatient so this was not a big deal. However, I should have left when I observed a young man come out of the kitchen with an order, tell the hostess the name associated with the order, and heard the hostess reply "Are you sure this time?" I live just a few minutes down the road, so my food is typically still hot when I arrive. I drive home, and open the meals to find cold food. Not slightly cold, but incredibly cold. I realize my meal has probably been sitting in the kitchen for some time, based on how cold it was, but I'm so hungry I really don't care. I've worked all day, and am ready to eat every bite of this 11 oz. Ribeye steak. Wow, was I let down again when I cut into it. I mean just look at the attached image and tell me if any respectable steakhouse would serve that uncooked slab of meat. Even after I'd ordered, paid, and waited an hour, I had to cook the meal too! I cook the steak to the appropriate temperature and realize the person who didn't cook my steak also didn't salt it. I am not hard to please, but I also did not realize this was a do it yourself restaurant. At this point I'm puzzled. Why the hell did it take so long for the staff to *not* cook my food? Why was my food so cold? Why did I have to pay someone to cook a meal I cooked my damn self? This is not intended to be an indictment on the wait staff at Zack Garvin's. They have never been anything other than nice and respectful to me. However, hire someone that knows, at minimum, how to use a fucking meat thermometer. read more

The first time I came he Forest I had a conversation with some of my co-workers here. They were debating which steakhouse (rib eye) was the best in the Jackson/Forest area. They mentioned Tico's, Shapley's, Zack Garvin's, and Lee's Steakhouse. I told them I'd try to go to all of them and settle the score once and for all. My first trip I went to Lee's and really liked it! Now on my second trip, I drove about 15 miles out of the way to try their steaks here. First, they're known for their fried green tomatoes, so I just had to order the tomato fritters, which are the FGT covered with cheese and crispy bacon pieces. That appetizer was so HUGE! The waiter could have warned me about the size, it definitely could feed a healthy party of eight if you have 1-2 slices each. I myself only had two slices and boxed the rest. The poppy seed sauce that came with the fritters was very good too. I also ordered the 8-9 oz steak (ordered medium), it came with bread and a salad, and I picked the baked sweet potato loaded (pecans, brown sugar, and butter) on the side. The bread was ok, seems like it was baked fresh but maybe earlier in the day because it was a little tough. The salad was standard but I liked the tomato basil vinaigrette. The steak I was really looking forward to but I was pretty disappointed, they overcooked my steak! I usually have it medium and it looked pretty well done to me. Usually I would have sent it back but the staff was super sweet and at 9PM I was their only customer. So I sucked it up and ate it, the flavor was good but their was no juicy-ness, no redness, I had to resort to A1 sauce!! I am SO ashamed. Even though my steak was overcooked, I'd still come back. They had more selection to their menu than steaks, maybe I'd try some seafood the next time. I'd also like to try their desserts, I was sooo tempted to try some the last time but I was stuffed! Service was slow. Waiter never followed up on our meal. Only checked in our drinks one time. The French fries were under cooked, kinda soggy. My Z-Club "would have" been tasty, but it came on a sweet bread that was not well suited for the type of sandwich. I did order sourdough, but it was missed on my order. The fried green tomato fritters are so good they will make your eyes roll back in your head! The steaks are perfectly seasoned and cooked. I did venture from my usual on our last visit and got the special of the night: ribeye with a crab cake, grilled shrimp and crawfish Monica sauce. I was slightly disappointed. The shrimp were delicious but there was too much sauce and the crab cake was mostly filler and tasted like it was a packaged frozen crab cake. No worries though. My wife and I visited this restaurant last night. We were told it was a 45 minute wait which was okay b/c we were visiting with friends. On October 5, 2017 I hosted a dinner with family members at Zack's because of the previous year's successful experience. We journey to the Newton area every October for a family reunion. This year, the steak was not as good as last years. My rib eye was fatty, and not up to par. After I we had finished, a large roach appeared on the wall behind my favorite cousins, and I solemnly resolved to never go back. I told the lady at the register about our embarrassment and horror of the unintended guest, and she didn't seem surprised. We recently stopped here for lunch. The restaurant was full, and they had maybe 2 or waiters on the floor. They were doing the best that they could to keep up, but were clearly overwhelmed. My mom, grandmother, one year old son and I were looking for a place to have an early birthday dinner on August 7, 2014. We ended up at Zack Garvin's in Newton, Mississippi. Although it's a steak house, we all opted for fish. My mom had the salmon, grandma had the fried catfish and I ordered the grilled tilapia with shrimp. We also ordered the fried green tomatoes. Before ordering my entre I had a quick conversation with the waitress about what to order. After settling on the tilapia she mentioned it wasn't too spicy, but she would ask them to go light on the spice. I wanted to share with my son, so I was concerned about it being too hot. What I received was caked with spice, as well as a little undercooked and the six shrimp on top were raw. I was able to scrape off the top layer and share portions that weren't seasoned. My mother and grandmother both asked for loaded potatoes, regular and sweet respectively. My mom got butter and sour cream while my grandmother only had some sugar and butter. I wouldn't consider either of those loaded, but I didn't read the description to see what actually came on a loaded potato of any variety. Overall, the food we could eat was really good. I was ok with the extra spice rub on the fish but raw shrimp is unacceptable. The staff was very warm and welcoming which is what got them two stars. I can't remember her name unfortunately, but the waitress was extremely nice. Some of the other patrons were a little rude, staring and pointing, but I guess that shouldn't reflect poorly on the restaurant.
