Disclaimer: This is a comparitive review between Weiss and Lenny's. Lenny's and Weiss although right across the street from eachother are definitely on different sides of the road. Both delis serve some great corned beef on deli jewish rye. But that's when they start drifting apart. When I entered Lenny's the place was presentable and had good lighting. When I entered Weiss I told myself to smile and not offend anyone so I wouldn't get shanked in the darkness. Lenny's has a much nicer looking establishment with a seating area that you wouldn't mind sitting at. Whereas the seating at Weiss is dimly lighted with very weathered benches. Point for Lenny's. Lenny's had a lady weigh out the corned beef with a scale while Weiss had an old man hand weighing the cb. The old man's hand says to put more corned beef in the sandwich. Point for Weiss. For the corned beef comparison I went with a regular corned beef sandwhich with mustard on rye. Lenny's set me back 5.99 per sandwich while Weiss was 5.25 before tax. Point for Weiss. When the old man was cutting the corned beef with the meat slicer you couldn't help but notice that the meat was super juicy, not the case at Lenny's, which led me to believe that the Lenny's corned beef would be dry. This was not the case. Both cb sandwiches were juicy and delicious. Weiss' cb has a richer flavor to it, you can tell that the color of the meat is also darker. It has more of the brine flavor. Lenny's has a cleaner meat flavor. My preference was Weiss' deeper corned beef. Another point for Weiss. If I wanted to bring someone to sit down and have a corned beef sandwich i would choose Lenny's. If I wanted to take a corned beef sandwich to go I'd go to Weiss. If I'm comparing the two, Weiss is a better value and tastier. read more

I went to Attman's today for lunch. Attman's is funny because of the cashier lady screaming at everyone, and the madness of the lines and people all banging into one another, and the urgent hunger that possesses you the minute you walk in the door. BUT their ever-escalating prices ($4 for a HOTDOG? .70 for SAUERKRAUT??) are comical. I should have just gone across the street to Weiss. The husband and wife who run Weiss look like they've been unhappily married for thirty years. Calling the shop a dump would be an understatement. It's dark and dingy and no matter how many people are crammed in, the building just feels abandoned. But the corned beef and pastrami and hot dogs are twice the size and half the cost of Attman's, and juicier and more flavorful. The best I've had, actually. Sometimes the crowd here can be a bit much, kinda like waiting in the free cheese line, or really loud annoying people on their lunch break ordering eight sandwiches to take back to the office. I've waited over 20 minutes in line here for food. So you have to steel up and be brave. But the guy always seems to remember what I want, even if I haven't been in for a year. He probably would have remembered today, and I probably wouldn't have had to deal with the weird hunger pageantry of Attman's. Lesson learned. read more

This was the best Place to get a corn beef or reuben sandwich. Moist meat, much better than Attman's. WEISS IS UNDER NEW OWNER WITH NEW MANAGEMENT. They started with the same old employees and good meat and service, but now most of the old employees are gone, especially the cook. The meat is not moist, service is extremely slow, and customer service is horrible. The floors inside and outside of the serving area are filthy. The meat slicing machine does not get wiped down as before. The cooler box, as you enter where the hot dogs and meat are sold from is filthy. I have been supporting Weiss since I was a young person. I want to continue to support them if they can get close to what they were. Disappointed and frustrated customer. read more

I've been going here since the 80's and IMHO it is still the best corned beef in town and the amount of meat is unbeatable. Service is quicker than similar Jewish delis. Don't expect anything fancy - - just great sandwiches. I understand the former owner (Joe) retired and sold the place a few months back but the quality has been maintained. read more

Stopped in here a few weeks back after reading about it on here (after going to Attman's first). Defintely a no frills place, but the large corned beef and pastrami sandwich was good, despite being microwaved. The coddie was also good. Plenty of bottled drinks to choose from as well. If you don't know Weiss is there you would probably miss the brick building while driving by on Lombard Street, halfway between Attman's Deli and Lenny's. Luckily that means this keeps Weiss Deli a Corned Beef Row secret, upstaged by the others but offering the same delicious value. The fluorescent lights and cafeteria seating won't win any awards. Just get in line behind the in-the-know locals (the wait is 15 minutes on most days), order your pastrami or corned beef, and enjoy. I know me a good Reuben and this one was good - Not great - not amazing, but just plain good. A generous amount of tasty, good corned beef. Again not great. There was no boom! Factor and I thought it tasted too similar to the deli corned beef I would get at any local grocery store. Thousand island was typical, bread normal, etc. it was good. Not great. He makes his own Corned Beef and it always has more meet in the sandwich then all the other delis in town...It's not on the menu, but ask for the EXTRA LARGE sandwich and see what you get. First thing to say, the lighting really isn't as bad as the others say, its decent. Its very simply laid out, easy to know where to order from. You have the husband and wife team (I think thats what they are) getting your food for you, the guy cutting the meats, and the lady assembling the sandwiches. I got myself a pastrami sandwich. The meat on that was so juicy and thick cut, and it was only $6.15! Completely worth it, and more. I got some western fries with it, made in store, about $1.25 I think. They were really good too. My favorite stroy about this place is that they had to close down one day a week so the manager could go to her psychiatrist. I can understand why. People line up for the Hot Pastrami on Rye from 10:30 am until 3:30 pm every day. It's very good, but if you're a little special princess like most of my friends, then you'll be all squeamish because it's dirty and so not IKEA. Yes, a dirty old man cuts meat for your sandwich and puts it in his hands. Yes they serve cod cakes and hotdogs with baloney wrapping them. Somewhat seedy bluecollard dive in rapidly gentrifying Jonestown that serves great lean corned beef. I prefer mine thick and fatty, but this thin sliced lean stuff is remarkably flavorful. All it needs is some mustard and some decent soft rye. Cafeteria style serving: place your order, he slices it right in front of you and stacks the sandwich to order. None of the attitude, crowd (or skimpiness) of Attman's, and you save a few bucks, too. The real killer here are the coddies, a vanishing Baltimore institution. Leaden deepfried cod and potato patties seasoned heavily with Old Bay, served between crackers with a splash of mustard. They're a relic of a vanished Jewish community that couldn't touch those unkosher crabcakes. These are the best I've had in Baltimore, and I've had a lot. Ignore the lines at Attman's and the polish at Lenny's. Come here for some lean corned beef and coddies. read more

Stay away from this place unless you like unsanitary places. First of all, bits of meat that was carved are all over the place - across the sandwich topping stations, on the staffers clothes, entire food prep counters and floors. Totally gross. They use basic microwaves to heat the meats and they are absolutely filthy. The employees do not change out their plastic gloves between food preparation. This place must be absolutely avoided if you had food allergies or restrictions. Huge risk for cross contamination. Do not let the reviews sway you over - play it a little safer and head over next door to Attman's which is a notch cleaner and a bit more trustworthy. I can't believe for as often as I've been going to Weiss that I have not written a review. Well first thing's first...AVOID THE LUNCH HOURS LoL If you want to enjoy your sandwich without the hassle of waiting in line then going around the lunch hours would be best. There is nothing like ordering your food without the impatience of another customer up on your back and you can't hear yourself think as you try to order something simple such as a corn beef sandwich. I like the peace of placing my order. Now as far as the food, You cannot go wrong here. Compared to the other place up the street, which I shall not name this ridiculously priced establishment, the food is just as good if not better and in my opinion the cost is pretty darnn good where you get your money's worth. And my favorite is the HoT Dog and how they wrap that fried bologna slice around it #EpicBaltimoreEating The inside is not as squeeze tight as that other place up the street where people clearly go there for the name making an "S" train just to order your sandwich. But at Weiss there is no "S" line and there is plenty of spacious seating to sit down and enjoy your food. Weiss deli is a very welcomed UNEXPECTED treasure! You would never know it existed if it weren't for word of mouth...or in my case, a simple Yelp search for "good corn beef sandwiches in Baltimore" and boy am I glad I found it!! I must say...upon entry it is very unwelcoming and after seeing the prep station you may want to turn around and leave, but if you can somehow get yourself to look pass the not so pleasing aesthetics you're in for one of THEE ABSOLUTE BEST corn beef sandwiches you have ever had in you life...no exaggeration. The meat is soooooo tender and juicy its unbelievable!! Like most of Baltimore, I was a frequent customer of Attaman's(just a short walk down the street) because that's all I knew of and frankly didn't know any better. Well I'll tell you this..."BYE BYE ATTAMAN'S"! From now on I am a loyal customer of Weiss for LIFE!! I came for the first time 2 days ago and didn't know what to really expect so I only got one sandwich ‍, why would I do that ‍...I'll just say this, my husband and I had to fight over the last piece(I won ) lol. I'll just say...that small taste of heaven brought me back the next day to try and recapture the delightfulness my mouth experienced the day before, only to be disappointed because they were already closed . They close rather early(2:45 pm)so if you plan on going give yourself some extra time. But I couldn't get that tasted out of my head...and mouth...which lead me back there again today!! The guy that slices everyone's sandwich on the same dish with the same knife seems like a nice enough person but it just seems gross. My wife and I just went to Weiss Deli for lunch and had the large Rueben which was absolutely delicious. The meat was tender and juicy while the bread and sauce were perfectly matched. In other reviews I have read about the dimly lit dining room, we did not see it that way, if you want glamorous surroundings you are in the wrong place however if you want some delicious food stop in and enjoy. read more

Okay. I love corned beef as my family have always purchased and ate this delectable meal, yes meal for years. I say meal because you really couldn't eat an entire sandwich back in the day. My favorite corned beef spot of all times was Herbs (on Lawrence Street right by Freemount and Pennsylvania Avenue) which went out of business or changed business several years ago. Since then I have discovered Lenny's, another fav Attmans and most recent fav Weiss. I ate at Weiss years ago but I think it shut down and changed management which caused me to try Attmans. Anywho, I like the taste texture and semi the amount of meat on Weiss sandwiches. I mostly like it because it is seasoned perfectly and not too salty. My parents loved it for this reason alone. The meat mixed with the right amount of fat melts in your mouth and tastes like butter. I'm Not a lean corned beef lover because I need a lil fat marbled in for flavor. The establishment is not aesthetically pleasing to the eye, and they certainly won't win an award for the cleanest restaurant of the year, but if you can turn your head during the 2 mins it takes to make your sandwich, you will be sure to be satisfied. Customer service was okay. Nothing to rave about. The owner does eyeball how much meat his worker puts on the sandwich but other that's gravy. Perfect dive for good eats! read more

Had pastrami sandwhich today. Food was good while hot, but will never return due to unattractive place and questionable food handling practices. Saw corned beef just sittng on the meat cutter, with clumped chopped pieces all around and on the blade. Then sandwhich maker opens the microwave with a gloved hand, and then uses that same gloved hand to handle my bread and pick up a plate with someone else's food on it from yet another microwave, without changing gloves as bread is then handled again. Don't mind eating at clean food dives, but into cleanliness and care for the food when I eat out. I like to experience other than bare bones locale when I go for take out or eat in. I also am one that prefers well groomed handler of my food, and today's gentleman looked a bit unkept for my taste but of course he is not my sweetie so perhaps he doesn't need to care what I think in that department.
