Welcome Home -- Where the Pastries Are Divine and the Hospitality Is a Performance Art Piece. Let me open with an ode: the croissants here are not merely pastries. They are flaky, buttery miracles -- the kind that make you briefly reconsider your life choices and wonder if you've been wasting your mornings everywhere else. The cardamom pastry deserves its own Wikipedia page, possibly a candle in its honor. The sourdough would win awards in cities that actually take bread seriously. I have been a loyal regular, cheerfully handing over roughly twenty dollars a week for these baked wonders, which -- despite being priced as though they were baked by elves in a heritage grain monastery -- are absolutely, defiantly worth it. And then came the incident. I stepped up to the counter, a loyal customer flush with goodwill and approximately $14 in pastry intentions, and made what I believed to be a reasonable, even virtuous, request: "Could you please put both pastries in one bag?" My motivation was ecological. Save paper. Small act, clean conscience. A feel-good moment for everyone involved. Co-owner Isa Steyer regarded me with the expression of someone who had just watched me attempt to mix a Bordeaux with a sports drink. "The cardamom and croissant," she informed me gravely, "don't go together." I want to be clear: she was not concerned about flavor contamination, structural pastry integrity, or some ancient baking covenant I'd inadvertently violated. She was concerned about the concept. The philosophy of the bag. I explained, with the measured calm of a man who simply wants to carry his breakfast home without a doctoral dissertation intervening, that I was going to eat them. Separately. With my own mouth. In the privacy of my own home. She drew herself up and delivered what I can only describe as a manifesto: "Well -- I'm SERVING them." Reader, she was protecting the pastries from each other. I had unwittingly stumbled into a sensory conflict that only she could perceive. The croissant, apparently, has feelings. The cardamom, dignity. And together in a paper bag for the eleven-minute walk home? Unthinkable. A scandal. Perhaps illegal in certain cantons. Funny as this sounds in hindsight -- and believe me, it took a full croissant's worth of cooling down to get there -- it was not amusing in the moment. Ms. Steyer's manner was genuinely condescending, and nothing I said or did had warranted it. I've spent years in the service industry myself. I understand the grind. I understand difficult customers. I was not one of them. Wanting a single bag is not a culinary crime. It is barely even a preference. There is something quietly absurd about being made to feel like a philistine by your breakfast. And yet -- here we are. P.S. I still go. Of course I still go. Do not be naive. I grew up in Germany. My relationship with good bread is not casual -- it is ancestral, almost spiritual, and frankly non-negotiable. The occasional humorless, vaguely territorial moment behind the counter is simply part of the experience now, like paying for parking or waiting for a table. I let it roll off my back. Because the moment that butter croissant hits -- warm, laminated to perfection, shattering at exactly the right angle -- all philosophical disputes evaporate instantly. That said, I've since learned that my bag incident may be the least of it. There are accounts of Ms. Steyer directing real rudeness at Black and Brown customers -- people from the very community this bakery has planted itself in. That's worth sitting with. This neighborhood has a history that predates the sourdough, the carefully curated aesthetic, and everyone who arrived recently to enjoy both. Businesses that come into historically Black communities don't inherit those streets -- they're guests in them, and should carry themselves accordingly. Artisanal excellence is not a substitute for basic respect, and it certainly isn't a pass. The croissants remain extraordinary. But a bakery is also its owners, and that part deserves scrutiny. A bakery that was founded by two of L'Appartement 4F's former bakers, this bakery has pleasantly delighted my French partner and me. I read about its inception story across several social media news outlets and was really determined to come here on an early weekend morning. The rosemary sourdough loaf is their signature creation, and is one of the best sourdough loafs I've ever had. It has just the right touch of saltiness balanced with rosemary herbs, and you can enjoy slices on its own without butter! All of their loaves are sourdough - my favorite genre of bread and easier to digest. The croissants and pain au chocolats are absolutely divine and authentic French as well. The croissants were perfectly buttery and had multiple layers inside. It was fluffy, airy, and just a bit chewy the way we like (we also went to the croissant contest a few months back in NYC!) To make the croissant a 10/10, we recommend the bakers try using salted butter to make the croissants a tad touch saltier - maybe Les Pres Sales? Otherwise, it was heaven in our mouths. Definitely will hop on the G train or brave the 1.5 hour walk from Greenpoint to come here once or twice a month! read more

Welcome Home has been circulating in my social media circles for a little bit, and I decided to try it on a weekday morning/afternoon. A very cute space to do some work in with 1 communal table and 4 high top seats facing out into the street. Too noisy to take a work call, but comfortable enough to do anything else. On a weekday afternoon, there's a steady flow of people but it's never crowded. The Pigs in Bed (Stuy) needed to be bought for the play on words alone. I think it could have been more forward in its spices and when eaten cold, the flavors don't come through as much. Possibly better to take home and warm up. (It wasn't offered to have it heated in store.) Not worth the nearly $8 I paid for it, in my opinion. Once the afternoon hits, the pastries switch out and you start to see some more savory pastries and full sandwiches. Would come back to try their other sweet pastries: an olive oil cake ($6), cinnamon roll--which is frequently mentioned ($6.50). read more

The owner has a very bad attitude, and for a place called "welcome home," she's very unwelcoming. I've wanted to like the place, but the owner is unkind and snarky. The first time I encountered her, my friends and I came for cinnamon rolls, and they were sold out. We said something about how sad we were, and she smirked and said "oh well." I didn't want to go there again after that, but my friends convinced me that they were good and sometimes she's in a bad attitude but sometimes she's nice. However today, I went there with my run club, which is predominantly Black and Brown in BEDSTUY. There were 6-7 of us, and we each ordered something. We found a corner to sit and congregate in. She came in, immediately started throwing daggers at us, and says to her employees "what's going on here?" with derision on her face. She then sits next to us, and slams her laptop down, which is passive aggressive and VIOLENT. The energy changed because she was making it very clear that she didn't want us to be there. As we left, we saw her kiss the sky and gesture her hands like she was saved from us. It's sad - she clearly isn't good at customer service, she has a malevolent spirit, and she lacks the cultural competence necessary to be a white business owner operating in a historically Black neighborhood and treating Black and Brown patrons in this way. Maybe her ex left her for someone in a run club, or maybe she used to run but can't. And I shared this with a friend, and they told me I'm the 6th person they've heard this from. The owner has a problem and a superiority complex, which is really a poorly disguised inferiority complex. Either way, I'll stick to Ciao Gloria. read more

Outstanding bakery! We arrived promptly at opening at 8 AM to find a line of about five parties. Service was quick and helpful, but the line seemed to continuously grow. There is a communal table with six seats plus counter seating at the window. No restrooms. Pastries were excellent. Cinnamon roll was the best I've ever had. It was absolutely perfect. Fresh out of the oven. Super soft and buttery. A fresh layer of molten icing. Can't possibly ask for anything better. I also tried the croissant as well as a pastry with ramp and feta. I tried those later in the day, so they weren't as fresh; however, both of those pastries were great too. The croissant is flakey and airy. It stands up to any of the best croissants in NYC. I'm eager to return for their kouign amann service at 10 AM. I'm huge fan of those after trying them in Montreal, but I haven't been able to find a spot in NYC that's as good. A fan of the owners' previous employer, L'Appartement 4F, the pastries here are equally amazing - I inhale their regular and chocolate croissant in 3 bites, and next door their "The Pigs in Bed (Stuy). I hope they open a spot right next to Arts & Letters 305 United, the parents need a solid bakery/cafe, next-door to the school...they would make a killing! I was excited when this place 1st opened. Their croissant is buttery and flaky - a dream. The chocolate chip cookie - insanely good. I also loved the cinnamon role and mango & chili danish. They don't offer any espresso drinks, but the coffee is good. I can't wait to go back and try the black out cake. The space is small, but if you find a seat it's cozy enough to pause and read a book for a bit or catch up with a friend. Staff is warm and friendly. read more

I would be remiss not to write about the magic of this establishment. While it produces the most delicious croissants and cinnamon rolls I have ever ingested, it is the people who work there (shoutout to Chris) that make it such a delightful place. I have spent countless hours here; I have never left not in a better mood, my faith in humanity restored. I could not have gotten through this past year of numerous personal struggles without my daily visits here, and I must credit the co-owner, Isa, for being the eponymous personification of this bakery. Went in for a drink...$5 for a green tea lemonade that was served from a canister that you would see at a local lemonade stand. as gentrification becomes more and more apparent in bedstuy, welcome home is definitely pushing the agenda of who is welcome and who is not. i am all for a cute cafe, but i'm tired of these ridiculous prices on low effort items. go to manhattan if you want to charge these outlandish prices. read more

I have tried a number of items from here and they have generally been excellent. The milkbread is probably my favorite, and it keeps fresh for at least a week. The croissants and other pastries have been excellent. You can taste the quality of the ingredients. One item that was unusual was a small bread loaf with olives and a bit of heat from chilies. The only thing that has disappointed was a kouign amann, which was not up to the level of the other items and about as good as the Whole Foods version. read more

I've been here three times since it opened in my neighborhood. The croissants are *chef's kiss* delicious and flaky and I've tried them all - butter, almond, and chocolate. Chocolate chip cookie is also superb, I think the cinnamon roll is a tad over rated but I think that is more of a personal preference since I don't like too sweet things. Texture is great tho. This shop is cute and cozy, and everyone has been really nice. I'm happy this place opened here near me! Next time I am going to try the savory items. read more

Don't visit if you actually want to feel welcomed and at home. Lovely staff, but consistently rude and poor customer service from the co-owners--one of whom (Isa) called their own product "disgusting" as I was checking out this week. They clearly cater to transplants, and not diverse local residents. I've given this place countless chances, but something about bad energy and baked goods don't go well together. Not to mention, they regularly sell clearly over-baked loaves and croissants.
