Having written an extremely detailed review of Wellish Eye Institute in 2018, I am adding a copy (below) because I believe it needs reading. It is now more than 2-years since my [second] botched cataract surgery by Kent Wellish. Having tried to get some help from this so-called "medical institute." I am now resigned to the fact that my left eye will never be fully functional. While I note the minimal 85 reviews of Wellish Eye Institute have a "Good" rating, it is essential to note the 18 "poor" reviews, which account for over 21% of the reviews overall for this questionable, uncaring, and dangerous medical facility. Having been to Wellish Eye Institute numerous times pleading for help, you would think someone would have addressed my situation. That's not the case, and Kent Wellish and the staff are not concerned with how they have affected my life. I urge you to carefully read my previous review before making your decision to use the Wellish Eye Institute. NOVEMBER 2018 REVIEW To place your vision at risk is a tough decision. You can do all the research in the world; read reviews that may or may not be accurate or trustworthy, speak to the AMA that is limited in what they can tell you, etc., but it ultimately comes down to trust in the person that takes an oath to "do no harm." When that trust is broken, I can't stand by and allow people to jeopardize their vision as I have. Dr. Kent Wellish (Wellish Eye Institute, Las Vegas, Nevada) has broken not only his Hippocratic oath but his word as well. I live with an eye that is legally blind that Wellish Eye Institute caused. I took Dr. Kent Wellish (and his staff) at their word and will regret it for the rest of my life. There isn't a day that goes by where I am not affected by this so-called medical professional's inferior surgical abilities. Kent Wellish says that I had a pre-existing condition (previous radial Keratotomy 35 years ago), which affected his first and then second surgeries, but this was never discussed or mentioned until after he messed up both surgeries. He and his associate, K.C. McCandless, O.D., even told me that my vision would continue to improve over time, to delay what I now realize was a stall tactic to avoid potential legal action. When we were beyond the legal limit to sue this charlatan, he told me that he had warned me of the dangers and now has left me legally blind in my left eye from relatively simple everyday cataract surgery, his words, not mine. Of course, this is a bald-faced lie. Now I cannot litigate against The Wellish Eye Institute, Dr. Kent Wellish, but I can forewarn those that might fall prey to his inferior surgical abilities. After 10-hours and more on his feet, I should have known over six-plus hours after I arrived for scheduled surgery that this doctor was all about the revenue stream and didn't care when I asked if we should instead do my surgery another day? No, he decided to risk my vision after standing for at least 10-hours and conducting a dozen and more operations back to back to back. I should have realized that when you see a doctor only once before surgery that nothing is about or for the patient, it's all about the money! What is curious about Kent Wellish's defense is that I had the "previous condition" in both eyes 35 years ago, and only his surgery caused the loss of my vision? The other cataract surgery, thank goodness, was a success. I find it very convenient for Kent Wellish to use this as an excuse. I urge those reading this review to take a good long hard look at a doctor that will not meet with you before your surgery and office-wait times that repeatedly make you sit for up to three hours at a time. And, a doctor that speaks to his assistant more than he communicates with you, the patient. All of these should lead you to the decision to move to the next surgical Ophthalmologist. RECOMMENDED: Never SERVICE: Dangerous and disreputable. PRICE: $$$ COVID: Practices a moderate level of pandemic regulations. PARKING: Adequate and convenient. REASON/INTENT: Medical, dental, and eye care

I was 20 minutes early for my appointment, which was at 1:50 pm. It's now past 3:00 pm and I'm still waiting to see the doctor. I'm now going to be late for my other appointments. I can get messages to remind me of my appointment for precheck paperwork, but I can't get a message that they are running over an hour late for appointments? They demand payment of services at the time service.... and if I was an hour late for my appointment, my appointment would probably be canceled. I understand these are doctors, but somewhere along the line, I feel like I'm made to feel like it's a privilege for them to see me.... where as actually we are paying for a service.... they should be more respectful of our time.

I should have found this concerning as all the other surgeons I have had to see because of him have told me every surgeon knows beforehand which surgery to do. He opted for LASIK, which after a quick procedure I was seeing very well. However, after a week or so I knew something was wrong as my vision got slightly cloudy, and at my one-month checkup I found out the surgery had failed, and I had developed an epithelial ingrowth which would need to be operated on right away. So, the first week of September of 2024 I went in for surgery #2, where Dr. Maurer opened my LASIK flap to clean out the ingrowth and then reseal my cornea with the flap. Right after the surgery I knew something was very wrong, as my vision was extremely blurry and I could not make shapes out very well. He explained to me it would just take a few days and things would get better. I went to all my follow ups explaining to him my vision was not getting better at all, and that I have eye pain as migraines from my poor vision. Well after almost two months of ignoring me he finally admitted that the surgery did not go well and that a fold had been created in my flap causing distorted vision and pain as well as another epithelial ingrowth. He explained I would need a third surgery to attempt to smooth out the flap and clean out the ingrowth once more. Halloween of 2024, I went in for surgery #3 where during the surgery Dr. Maurer explained to me that although he is cleaning out the ingrowth, the flap more than likely cannot be smoothed out, and without a further word he removed the entire flap from my cornea. Now he explained I would never have another ingrowth. What he did not tell me would be the complications that would come after having an entire layer of my cornea removed. Two days after my surgery I visited the emergency room due to extreme pain and discomfort in my eye, fearing that something had gone wrong and Dr. Maurer would not give me anything for the pain. A few days later I started noticing my vision worsening, with streetlights and other bright lights becoming smeared and the presence of double vision. He told me it would go away and there would be nothing to worry about. It did not go away, and I ended up having to see another doctor at the office since Dr. Maurer left. I was given over to the care of Dr. Little at the same office who ran test after test to find out what the issue was, including several different eye drops he tested out on me. He diagnosed me with an astigmatism that had formed during the healing of my third surgery. This went on for over a month before he eventually gave up and recommended me to see a different corneal specialist at another clinic. Upon my visit to the new specialist the first week of February 2025, I was quickly diagnosed with not just an astigmatism, but an irregular astigmatism and told that because an entire layer of my cornea was removed it may be too thin to operate on and she refused to do so and said there is nothing that can be done to correct my vision with surgery. She sent me to an optometrist who gave me glasses; however, glasses do not work for an irregular astigmatism. So, we tried out scleral contact lenses which my insurance did not cover and cost thousands of dollars. These too did not help my vision, only helping slightly with the double vision. I am still being told there is no technology today that can help me, and that I will eventually need a corneal transplant later in life as I am too young now to have one. I still must use steroid eye drops, eye pressure drops, and lubricating drops every day because of the surgeries I had. Because of everything I had to go through, I missed weeks of work from all the surgeries where I was not getting paid to miss work. I was left with trauma and emotional/mental pain and suffering that I still live with to this day. And I must face each day knowing that I will never be able to see with that eye like I could before. I have had to change my lifestyle, as I can no longer drive at night due to the damage from the irregular astigmatism and how it affects low light settings and how I see light. I also have had to retract job applications and stop hiring processes for jobs that have vision requirements as I can no longer have my vision corrected. I live in fear that I may lose my job and must go on some form of disability in my early 30's just to make ends meet. NVSION Eye centers has never reached out to me to discuss my situation with me or even apologize for what I must go through each day. While I recognize that the original surgery was elective, a

The critical thing to remember is to write down all of your questions and concerns and bring them with you. That way, the uncertainty is taken away more quickly as any surgery is always a bit nerve wracking. Also, make sure you follow their instructions to the letter for pre/post op to ensure the best outcome. Being hyper analytical I always have many worries, but even on the day of my surgery for my right eye, the team put me at ease and before I knew it I was going home. I wish my insurance covered for my astigmatism as I opted for that procedure as well, and it's expensive, but well worth it, so I took on a CareCredit (the councilor there helps you get it set up) that I will pay off in two years with no fees etc at the end.
