I sustained an eye injury on a Thursday night. Because medical care for eye injury is so specialized, it would not have been faster or easier to go to an urgent care or an emergency room since they would need to call in an eye doctor at night, which is pretty hard to get. The next morning I called Shepherd Eye Center to have my eye injury evaluated. They gave me an appointment within 45 minutes at an eye center near my home. Huge operation - lots of staff, lots of patients, lots of parking - and an overflow lot! Saw 2 different techs before OD who did various tests. They seemed knowledgable and were patient. Front desk lady who was super rude. Kept yelling at patients if they were doing a medical or eye check visit - when clearly the patients are unclear on what insurance covers. When it was my turn to be publicly shamed I asked a few more questions, like what a medical exam did. She asked for my insurance type and then told me it would be $90 for the medical exam and free for the vision test. After being put on the spot about shaming me that I didn't care about detecting the health of my eyes, I opted for the included visit. I waited 30 mins to be seen and was at this place for 2 HOURS!! It was visit a tech, sit in waiting room, visit tech, sit in waiting room, sit in dr office waiting, see doctor - which was a 2 hour endeavor (for not the medical procedure). Not a fan. read more

High recommend Dr. Raymond Theodosis. From checking in to the vision tests this place was very professional and friendly staff. This is a surgery center as well so in that wing there is such cleanliness and organization I was shocked in a great way. They don't tell you what you want to hear they tell you the truth and what is best for your health and in what aspects out should fix your health to go through either Laser or any kind eye surgery. This feels to me like the equivalent of fast-food eye care. They process LOTS of patients and it is clear they have an assembly line approach (you are passed from one tech to another to another, etc.....). On the other hand, it was reasonably priced and the doctor seemed competent. The techs are really sweet and care about you - one of them even caught an issue with my eyes that no other doctor has ever found. Be prepared to wait, bring a book (please don't be the person in the waiting room watching loud videos on your phone - I had to move twice to get away from one of them). There is a sign that says you will be waiting for 25-35 mins for your appt (even if you showed up on time!). I did an experiment and arrived 25 mins early to see if that helped - but nope, I waited 50 mins before see the first tech. The docs seem really rushed (too many patients?) and are in and out of the room super fast. Write Down Your Questions Ahead of Time - this is the only way you will get them answered. There is a kiosk to check-in, each time they want to scan your driver's license and medical card. You cannot check in without paying anything they say you owe (I was paying bills before the insurance company had even posted the explanation of benefits!). Would I go back - sure, but with the awareness that my time is not valued and that I will be spending on average 2 hours for 15-20 mins of time with the techs/doc. read more

Had an appt here with Dr. Hansen. Had my records sent from my previous provider from Hawaii. Dr. Hansen didn't even look at the records. I came in for itchy & dry eyes, as well as my routine annual eye visit. I have been noticing that my vision has been blurry & declining with seeing distance. My previous provider had me on a prescription eye-drops for dry eyes as well as eye glasses for astigmatism for distance. Dr. Hansen stated I just need glasses if any, for driving for distance & I could purchase them if I wish, no mention at all of astigmatism, & I can use over the counter eyedrops for my dry eyes. I questioned how why & his answer wasn't to my satisfaction. Sorry but I will not be returning. As a medically retired medical assistant, I honestly expected better. Medical care should be the same clear cut across the board in any state. I don't know if my standards are to high being that I am originally from Hawaii? But honestly, being from Hawaii should not matter PERIOD! If a patient sends your facility medical records, it should be reviewed ahead of time, plain & simple. Very disappointed in this facility! I got an eye lid surgery by Dr R Reedy on March 2024. it's supposed to see me a week latter to evaluated the recovery of the surgery but I was sent with another doctor whom doesn't want answer my concerns and telling me to ask Dr Reedy. Dr Reedy move my appointment twice saying he is busy and today I received another call moving my appointment to October instead June that was say before. My point is that, when he want perform the surgery he move quickly to do it and now to do the evaluation he doesn't have time. I got some issues with the healing and need to see a doctor. Full disclosure: I am not a patient here. I drove a patient here for her appointment. The patient lives very far away but says that she makes the trip to this location because she loves her doctor so much that it makes it worth it. So that should say something positive about the care that patients receive here. However, I had such a negative experience with a receptionist that I feel it should be brought to the office's attention. My review reflects only my experience in the office, not the healthcare providers. When you walk into the office, there's a sign on the door that says you have to wear a mask. There is a table by the front door with a box of masks, so I grabbed one. A receptionist suddenly appears out of nowhere and says "ma'am. We don't want everyone touching the masks". She then proceeds to talk in a condescending tone to me about the proper way to grab a mask from a box without contaminating other masks. (I have been working in healthcare for years and do not need to be taught how to minimize contamination.) I pointed out that she was not available to hand out masks when we arrived. She continued to use a condescending tone with me and the patient as she helped us check in on the kiosk (which may explain why she was not by the door handing out masks). We had to check in on the kiosk even though we checked in online. We had our temperatures taken on the wrist as well. I understand that COVID protocols are still in place in medical offices. However, I would suggest that the office have a second staff member in place to either help at the kiosks or monitor the front door/table so that both areas are covered. Also, if they do not want patients grabbing their own masks, I would recommend that they do not leave a box of masks on an unattended table by the front door. To improve the patient experience, this office should also re-evaluate the training provided to support staff, because my initial encounter with this receptionist led to a bad first impression of this clinic. It is completely inappropriate to use a patronizing tone with patients under any circumstance. read more

Dr. Alder and Shepherd Eye Center on Pecos-Mcloud in Las Vegas, NV. I have gone to this location since the late 1980s (I think). Each time I put off having any surgery because I was afraid. My eyes got worse and worse. On June 15, 2023 I had cataract surgery by Dr. Alder. It went great! I went from not being able to read the numbers off of a license plate in front of me, to almost perfect 20/25 vision (with out glasses). The best of my entire life! Many co-workers, friends and one foster brother all had great out comes here over the years. I highly recommend that you use them too. After arriving at the office, she was immediately asked to log in into a kiosk and was charged $110.00 off the bat without even speaking to anyone. They call her up to the window and now she's told they can't see her because the referral needs to come from here primary care doctor. She told the lady "what did I just pay $110.00 for? The lady very rudely said "I don't see your payment anywhere in our system" to which my wife replies "wanna see my banks' statement on my phone? I get the fact that these people deal with all walks of life and all kids of attitudes but do t you get paid to be a health care "professional" and not a complete ass? I swore that I would never go back to Shepherd Eye clinic after my first visit 8 years ago. Their procedures are not infallible. Recently I went back for another eye exam because I needed new glasses and wanted to give them another chance. Was I ever wrong! The staff is still rude, the waiting is atrocious and the optometrist is perhaps the most condescending person in a medical profession. I had to take my eye exam twice. Those tests are not perfect. After spending nearly $1600 on glasses and not being able to see well enough with my new prescription; I decided to wait until next year and go back to Eyeglass World. In the meantime, he said he found a tear in my retina and sent me to one of their sister companies, Retinal Consultants of Nevada. Talk about a shady business! I waited nearly 4 hours for my laser eye surgery. They only had one doctor on duty and it was apparent he was in a bad mood. He numbed the wrong eye before starting the surgery. The pain was excruciating. I kept telling him that it was painful but he didn't listen. It took me over 6 hours with a cold pack on my eye before the pain subsided. I was sent to see Dr. Rovit by my eye surgeon. What a mess. Initially I was told it was eye strain causing a crossed eye, then began the "blame game" for the Lasik surgery (how come I never had this issue before?). Okay, but the "bad Lasik surgery" seemed to correct itself every time my eyes had a rest (I work long hours). At this point I was an annuity annually for a check up and to say "yup, you have a crossed eye, but see pretty well". Finally this year, I waited THREE HOURS at the offices for an exam (mind you I had an appointment). The staff was rude, pushy and I was, along with the other patients waiting, treated, rudely. When I announce my appointment was over Dr. Rovit conducted a light speed exam and pronounced me fine (this too exactly 5 minutes) and I left. I was billed for services not rendered, including a refraction for which I had a friend waiting for three hours along with me, I told the staff to correct their bill and I was notifying my insurance company and surgeon as well and I would not be back. I received a letter from Dr. Rovit letting me know I was "fired" as a patient as I was rude to his staff. My response was, "too late, I've fired you and it was your staff who was rude". My 80yr old father in law had his surgery yesterday. When dropped off, "it will be a couple of hours", turned into less than one. Which was great! Except I was dropping my son at school when I received the call. "Are you still here waiting?" No, you're early, I'm across town but I'll be there shortly. "WELL! I guess he is just going to have to WAIT then!" Completely rude (@8:15am ). When I showed I checked in at the front desk...."just pull around to the sign". Ok, so are you alerting them I'm here? "Yes ma'am" After 10+ min at the curb, someone came to ask how I was waiting for. THEN, hours later my diabetic father in law is complaining about a burning in one leg and the veins are throbbing. I called the after hours number. The operator was AMAZING!! "You were right to call. I'm sure nothing to be concerned, but I'll pass the message ASAP." She really eased our worries. It wasn't until the following morning when someone called to check on him. Not to mention they have him running around to several locations...none of which are on our side of town....when there are two locations incredibly closer. He has eye surgery and the very next day send him to the farthest location of the FIVE LOCATIONS they have. The surgery went well. But it seems like once they get your money, they can really care less about you. You are "just another". Putting money over people is not a good business practice. Check in process is a nightmare they have an older clientele customer base yet chose to install kiosk to check in. At these kiosk you have to submit insurance cards and scan them. Make a mistake and the lady at the door doesn't offer any assistance. I asked her name after I watched a man struggle and offered to help him myself. Shepherd Eye Center does not care about the health of it's patients or employees. The pandemic is not over. The employees are not masking nor are most of the patients. The office and exam areas were very crowded. Patients were placed shoulder to shoulder with no distancing. I had to keep moving to try and find a place to stand away from other patients. I was masked but felt unprotected from Covid because of the crowded conditions. I was exposed to two employees that were coughing and coughing patients as well. Most of the people at this office were elderly folks who are the most vulnerable population for Covid complications and death. It seems to me Shepherd Eye Centers cares most about raking in Medicare dollar. This was a horrible experience! read more

Scheduled to come to this Shepherd Eye Center for my cataract surgery. I was greeted at the door by a nurse who did a quick COVID screening questionnaire and took my temperature. In the waiting area, the seats were the prescribed 6 feet apart (and half were not filled). I was in the waiting area under 5 minutes before another nurse (yes, a real RN, not just a technician) came out to do a more complete pre-op screening (in addition to the over-the-phone screening done the evening before). I was then brought back to the pre-op room where I met 2 more nurses who hooked me up to some monitoring devices, started an IV, put meds in my eye, and answered my questions. Once my eye was numb and dilated, I was wheeled into the OR. Within a few minutes, enter Dr. Montgomery. He got me positioned, made sure I was comfortable, and then delivered that bothersome cataract and popped in a man-made variety. I was in my car being driven home 2 hours after entering! Everyone at the center was super professional and caring. And after I was home for a while, someone from the center called to make sure I was doing OK and understood what followup care was needed. I am very impressed with the organization and professionalism. read more

I have been a patient for over 5 years. I pay my co-pay, wait probably longer than usual, but then get my prescription and out the door. This time? I got charged for refraction with lenses and other garbage I didn't ask for and wasn't told it would increase the amount billed. After a 90 dollar co-pay, I then get billed for an additional 217. Got a total run around from billing. I don't have any eye problems. My prescription didn't change from last year. If you're going to start adding garbage fees to the bill just to compensate for the bad year, I'm done with this office. It was the center on Horizon Ridge. If you have Humana check your bill. My negative review relates to the seriously flawed insurance and payment process and how the patient (ME) can be thrown under the bus for payment in full even though I did everything correctly with both Shepard Eye Center and my Insurance Provider United Health Care. Had the surgical procedure "pre-approved" with my insurance provider United Health care. Paid my co-payment in full and in advance. Signed and provided any and all forms and did everything asked of me. The payment process between Shepard Eye Center and United Health Care is outside of my (and yours) control. It seems to me that when I pre-approve a procedure with my insurance company, fill out all forms completely and accurately and pay my co-payment my responsibility should be complete. In my case (and probably many others) Shepard Eye Center made a mistake in their process to payment with United Health Care. Rather than working it out between two organizations that obviously have a business relationship they default to what must be an easier path to payment sending the patient to collection. Due to no fault of mine they sent a collection company after me for the full amount. If you know of anyone with a similar experience I would appreciate knowing what happened to them.
