With all of the mixed reviews, I felt it was important to come here and show love where warranted. I wanted a very special piece to honor my father, an outline portrait of him and I from 25+ years ago. At some friends' suggestion, I reached out to Ellie who did a phenomenal job with a sketch. I am not going to lie-- YES, it was expensive, but for such a special project I really thought of it as an investment. Ellie clearly understood how important this piece is to me, and I didn't mind paying what was asked, especially for a female artist's work and expertise in such a male dominated industry. My interactions with the front desk were limited, albeit pleasant none the less. While I cannot attest to other artists work, I can certainly recommend Ellie. Soooo I unfortunately have to update my review - my fine line tattoo faded completely after a couple of weeks. I came in for a touch up and she was nice enough to put the tattoo somewhere less delicate than my finger since she had to redo it all anyway. The new one unfortunately has almost faded completely after two weeks, leading me to believe that it was less a matter of location, but technique. It looks terrible. I found myself staring at my hand tattoo a lot and trying to convince myself it's not so bad and I shouldn't write this review, but I saw that someone else also speak up about their previous experience with Chang so here is my experience. Upon consultation I told him exactly what I wanted and asked if it was possible to do. Placement for hand/finger tattoos can be really tricky. We even drew directly on my hand as reference and he said everything was doable. Come day of, he told me I couldn't do what I initially wanted and I had to pivot on the spot. I wasn't ready to redo the tattoo in the window of time I had booked so the tattoo didn't turn out as I had hoped. I also mentioned I wanted my hand tattoo to be fine line and used many reference photos. Everything was fine during consultation but when it was being tattooed, all of my preferences went out the window. On top of that, I asked if we can make minor adjustment to one of the 3 tattoos (one of the "5" didn't have a very long top line so it just looked like a very round comma), and he refused. Also, after finishing the first two he was fed up that we had a third one to do (even tho this was approved during consultation and I had paid for it). I highly suggest another artist for your ink work. I still regret coming here til this day. Pricing: now that I've gotten tattoos for over 4 years, these tattoos were quoted way over priced. (I was young and dumb tho so my lack of experience paid this outrageousness). I loved my experience with WestTattoo. If you're looking for you first tattoo, it's a great place to go. All of their artists are incredibly talented, so it was a no brainer for me to schedule an appointment here! I made my appointment online a few weeks before I traveled out to NYC. They responded super quick, which was super. The studio was very efficient, especially with how busy they were while I was there-- having made an appointment helped. I enjoyed my time with Nick, he was super friendly and I felt very comfortable. I came in knowing what I wanted, and he was able to put a finishing touch on the design that I had brought in to make my piece even more gorgeous than I expected. Another customer was getting work done not far from where we were, and it encouraging knowing other artists were as friendly as Nick was. I enjoyed getting to know Nick during the appointment, and I enjoyed being able to look at the art Nick had on his walls while he worked. The only negative thing for me was how expensive it is. I happened to come across West 4 Tattoo when I was looking at fine line tattoos online. One of the artists there had been posting designs on her instagram, and I found one of a snake/rose that I loved. I messaged her and booked an appointment for a consultation. I wanted the tattoo to be somewhere around 3in long and towards slightly more towards the outside of my forearm, but she sat with me. She explained that size would be too small for the amount of detail in the tattoo and that it would be better to shift the placement to the part of my forearm that was flatter. We sat together for over an hour printing out different sizes and trying them out. She was super patient and never seemed the slightest bit annoyed by my indecision. I really appreciate her advice because after seeing the tattoo on me, I think what I originally imagined would not have looked as good. The problem I encountered that made this a 3 star rather than a 5 star review is that my tattoo did not heal very well, which I attribute more to the lines being so thin than to the artist, but it cost $1400 including tip. Covid hit, and I wasn't able to schedule a touch up appointment until now. Turns out the artist who did my tattoo was a visiting artist and had to return to her home outside of the states. So now I have to pay an additional $300 for a touch up because it's not the same artist. read more

This review is about 1 year and a half late.. I came here for Friday the 13th tattoo special last year (7/13/18). Each artist posted pre-designed tattoos on their Instagram page. Each design already has a set size and price. The design I chose was $180. They didn't allow my friend to come in with me because she wasn't getting a tattoo. There was a long time of people outside and inside the store. Some people waited up to 3 hours and still couldn't get a tattoo. I waited about 1 hour because my artist didn't have as long of a line. The whole process was only 10 minutes. I wish my artist could have traced over the tattoo. At the end, I got a tegaderm bandage and was instructed to take it off after 3 days and to apply A&D ointment for first few days. After taking off the tegaderm, I already noticed that my tat was lighter than I had thought. Today, my tattoo is so faded that it's barely noticeable. read more

I'm writing this after a few months of getting my tattoo with Anthony. Let me preface this by saying I got my first tattoo from here which is gorgeous, and was done by a professional artist. This is why I came back for my second tattoo and tried out Anthony since the other person was no longer there. I gave Anthony references to a snake tattoo I wanted in our virtual consultation. He quoted me $1050, which was fine, considering I wanted the tattoo to be large and had shading. He said he would draw me something ORIGINAL, not exactly the tattoo I sent him. Sound good right? The day I get there, he is over 40 minutes late, and the receptionist came over twice to assure me he was on his way. Why have an appointment time if he's treating me like a walk-in? That's when I should have just ran away (however, they made me pay before starting, which was highly unusual given that the first time I was here, I paid after I was satisfied with the work). When he arrives, he apologizes for being late, no sweat. He proceeds to show me his design which was cute. He allowed me to add an element that I saw in advance was usable for the public (free moon design). The snake's shape was not particularly what I wanted, but I figured I was getting an original piece with elements I added, so I rolled with it. Then, Anthony has me sit for over 2 hours while he draws!! INSANE. He laughed it off saying "haha, yeah I was drawing it in the cab over here." Again, I should have ran, but I was stubborn and wanted my tattoo after paying all that money. But why have the consultation if you're not going to draw in advance?! He also post-poned my original appointment for a few days later, so he had way more time. Sidenote: there are more people who have this same exact experience from Anthony if you scroll down. Wish I had known earlier. He tattooed what I thought was the outline of the tattoo for 3 hours, and boasted saying "I should technically charge you more for this." That's when I started to get really annoyed with his professionalism. After he finished, I asked if we were starting the shading yet. He said "Huh? No shading." Are you kidding me?! Again, whatever, it's an original tattoo right? WRONG. An artist from France hits me up on Instagram after posting saying I do not have permission to use his work. I was shocked and confused. I bring it up with the shop, who seemed concerned at first. Ultimately, they said they couldn't do anything without more information, even though I gave them the name of their Instagram and proof that it was taken off the internet (it was on freakin Pinterest!). I let them know that I do love the shop based off my first experience with them, but that this is unacceptbale. They said they could add elements to the tattoo if I wanted. Great, is it complimentary? Nope! I would have to pay. So not only did I not get the tattoo I wanted, it was STILL not an original work of art and you're asking me to pay MORE to fix it? Why did he not just tattoo the piece I sent him well in advance? Why pass a different piece off as his own saying he started drawing it in the cab over? Does drawing mean copy/pasting now? Anyway, I covered it up with an actual experienced artist at Acqua Santa Tattoo. The artist there is a professional with over 20 years of experience, multiple awards, and has tattooed in over 24 countries to perfect his art. He drew my current snake freehand and tattooed me in 2 hours for only $450. He let me know that sure, the price per hour was acceptable at West 4th, but that it's not worth it in the long run because fineline fades more quickly. Additionally, that the artist was probably trying to get every penny's worth by dragging this tattoo out for 3 hours when it could have been done under 1 hour. Quite simply, he didn't want to tattoo the original snake I sent him, he wanted to do his own thing and capitalize. Two other artists I spoke with from two different shops gave similar advice to avoid this place if this is how they treat customers. I am sure other artists are fantastic, just as my first one was in 2018. However, Anthony is unprofessional and, at least for me, did not have an ounce of original artwork to speak for. He is a hot-shot who can do whatever he pleases because the shop will back up his unprofessional ways. I would very much appreciate my money back, but based on other reviews, this is a long shot. Hoping West 4th will do better in the future as clients are often giving their trust to artists, only to have it slapped in their face. read more

I got my tattoo a few years ago now and I'm finally in a place where I can revisit this. I had the worst experience here, and was afraid to get tattooed again. I requested an appointment with Chang, as I had seen some of their work before and loved the style. I was not quoted a price, but had to put down a $200 non refundable deposit. When I showed up, Chang spent 5 minutes (not speaking to me) while drafting the design in black and white. Since i requested color, I knew the price would be higher but I couldn't believe when I was quoted for $1,200 for a two inch tattoo. When I brought up my concern, I was scoffed at and told I could walk and lose my $200 deposit. I agreed to get the tattoo because I had wanted it for months after my grandmothers passing. Chang was extremely rude while putting on the stencil, even yelling at me when I moved a step because I mishear them. Their assistant was the one to give me a reassuring look. Since I wanted color, I brought up to Chang my concern with the deep dark colors they were putting out as I wanted more of a lighter tone (and the image I was shown was in black and white). I was again scoffed at, and put in a position where I couldn't see the work that was being done. When Chang was done, I made note how you could BARELY see the tattoo, and was yelled at saying it was 'since I was such a tightass about the dark colors'. I left and cried, was so upset and disappointed that a tattoo in memory of my grandmother was barely visible and I spent $1,200 to have one of the worst experiences of my life. I was afraid to get tattooed again and have since found a wonder studio where every experience has been a pleasure. I went here for my first ever tattoo and was practically scammed out of hundreds of dollars for a very small tattoo which is now practically fading. It was my first time so I didn't know much and they wanted to charge me over $800, luckily I was able to negotiate down a little but was still insanely overcharged. I could've gotten the same thing done but better for 33% of the cost (no joke). If they tell you "it's a hard area to tattoo," don't believe them. The artist I booked is no longer there but their assistants refused to inform me of this important information for my cancellation. This review is a couple years in the making. I was new to NY and looking for a tattoo design that was original and had meaning to me. Did my research and found west 4 with seemingly great reviews. Scrolled through the Instagram of all the artists at the location and picked my favorite; Tony. Went in paid my deposit explained my design and handed over what materials I had and made my appointment. When the big day came I arrived early for my appointment. The lady at the front took all my information and told me that Tony had taken a walk in and would be finishing up shortly and I could wait. THREE hours later with no explanation I am finally in the chair. I see the woman he just finished and she is a busty lady who got a red snake between her tits, so now I understand why he took the walk in and ignored me. Once in the chair it's almost midnight and he is talking about how he could tattoo all day and never sleep while he shows me the design he came up with. At this point I'm happy enough with the design and stubborn enough to have waited this long for the tattoo I wanted. When it was all done the first thing I notice was that the shading was much darker than I would have liked and not what he had shown me at the start. When I asked him about it he said something to the effect of "oh, you must be new to tattoo's it will lighten up as it settles in" and I walk away. Fast forward to today. My $1,100 tattoo from this guy is still my least favorite. It never "lightened" up like he said it would (dumb on me for buying that) and within a week of showing my work off to my friends I was confronted with the fact that it wasn't even an original design. He had just found something off a google image search which is honestly ok but then what the heck did I pay you all that money for. To be clear this review is less for the shop and more for the artist. The kid is a 20 something who has started to get a reputation and has let it go to his head. The shop however encourages this and wants all its artists to be the next jon boy. In other words over rated celebrity artists with no customer service skills and little to. Originality. I have gotten three pieces done elsewhere since all of them with more detail greater artistry and, honestly, WAY cheaper. read more

Came here to get my first tattoo from guest artist Yeonho from South Korea. Yeonho was absolutely amazing and my tattoo has healed very nicely - couldn't have asked for a better experience for my first tattoo. Granted this review is more for my amazing guest artist, but the fact that they have such quality and professional guest artists speaks volumes about their own store. The place itself is super super clean and nicely decorated, and there's even a cute flower wall for you to take pictures afterwards. The workers there greet you when you walk in which was very welcoming. They even give you a nice aftercare package which was everything you need to care for your tattoo afterwards. This place uses tegaderm which made the healing process so easy and stress free. I did a lot of research into the healing process and it seems like tegaderm is the way to go - I'm glad I didn't even have to ask for the bandage. I felt as if she did not want us to come in at all. She rudely reminded us that the piercing deposit was $100 and that the tattoo deposit was $300. We understood prior to coming, yet she repeating that as if we could not afford it. This employee basically interrogated my sister and questioned what she wanted done for her piercings. This specific employee wasn't even doing the piercings. West 4, please treat potential customers WITH appointments more respectfully. My review is a year overdue but I felt compelled to write it after seeing some posts on Instagram. I've been reviewing Chang's IG for some time and I finally got to visit NY so I booked an appointment right away. I wanted my tattoo on my upper wrist but he ended up talking me out of it saying that it was a hard area to tattoo. On top of that he talked me out of the design I wanted too. I trusted that he knew what he was doing. I ended paying $500 for this POS that I hate. Adding salt to the wound, I see him tattooing on the area of the wrist I originally wanted posting photos on IG. Posted a comment about it only to see it deleted. Absolutely terrible. Since coming to West4, I haven't ventured to any other studio and have been a loyal customer here. All the artists and receptionists have an incredible ability to make you feel at home (since getting a tattoo can be a nerve-wracking experience), as they take their time to go over your design and answer in detail to any questions you have. I had planned a last minute trip to New York, and wanted to get a tattoo done at West4. To my surprise, it was very easy scheduling an appointment as Ghinko (receptionist) immediately responded to my request, looked through my reference photos and booked me in with Nick (@wickynicky) a week later. I went in alone and was a little nervous at first, but Nick was incredible. You could tell he was excited for my design (as he had already prepared my stencil), and in a way, that completely changed my mood and made me excited too. I can not stress this enough, do NOT go here. I got a few small tattoos done here and they looked great, i loved them. I understood that they would fade a bit (I have gotten fine line tattoos before and I know the offer one free touch up), but 3 of the tattoos completely DISAPPEARED after a week. They were not "faded", they completely disappeared, no ink or sign of a tattoo present on my skin. I called the store explaining what happened and asking to talk to a manager. The woman at the front desk was so rude and refused to let me speak to a manager. She asked me to e-mail their general e-mail address, so I did. No response. I called 2 days later and they said "the manager is aware but is very busy and will respond back today." He never responded back. They clearly simply don't care about their clients and the work that they put out which is extremely disheartening considering you are trusting them to permanently put something on your body. I would never want to write a negative review to hurt a business but this is completely unacceptable. I was dumb and didn't read the reviews before going but now I know better. WARNING: I WAS TREATED like a SECOND CLASS CITIZEN During the initial consult, Yadi was very sweet and said she would be happy to make as many changes to the design as I felt was needed. However, it seemed like she lost her patience with me very shortly after. Not once did I ask her to go back to the drawing board and do a completely different design from the mock-up. All of my requests fell within the general design of the initial mock-up, just different shading and colors. I also had to wait 3 ADDITIONAL days AFTER the deadline that she had set and follow up MULTIPLE times, before I even got my initial virtual design. I NEVER got an explanation on why my virtual design check was LATE and NO apology. Yadi just told the receptionist to refund my deposit because she couldn't accommodate my shading requests, based on my initial estimate. I was more than willing to discuss the new estimate with her because I see the value in her work. Instead, I was just terminated as a cilent. I wasn't given a chance to have this discussion with her until I called and complained on the phone. (After I fought my way for a second consult, I decided to not go forward with it. Based on how I was treated, the trust is no longer there). I WAS TREATED like a SECOND CLASS CITIZEN as if I couldn't afford to up my estimate. PLUS, I was ACCUSED of possibly stealing her design and taking it to another artist for a cheaper price. I NEVER once gave her this impression and came to her for a reason because I trusted her to do this work. I value artists and don't believe in ripping off people's hard work. Yadi, you need to grow up and NOT be so insecure. Believe in your originality and believe that people came to you for a reason. Carla is the best! I booked an appointment through email and they were able to see me within the week. I had requested Carla and she was so nice when I met her. I gave her an idea for what I wanted and was pretty open about a mandala design. She booked me for a week later and came back to me with 4 beautiful designs! I was super excited!! I got there around 8:30 and she immediately started working on me. She made sure that the placing was good and that I was comfortable. She took her time with the tattoo and I could tell she really cared about how the tattoo would come out. My tattoo has about a million dots so you can imagine how meticulous she had to be but I was so grateful for her patience. We were finally done by 11:30 or so and it came out great! I had a zoom call with the artist to discuss the tattoo, I then Venmo'd the artist to secure my appointment. A week before my appointment I asked for a draft of my tattoo only to be ghosted by the company. On the day of my tattoo appointment I received a phone call stating that I couldn't be seen till 7 (appointment at 5). I informed them because I just had a baby and I had to feed him (bottle at 7), that would not work for me. I then received a text that I would have an appointment with a different artist at 5:30. I called to confirm that a different artist (nick) not Chang would be doing my appointment, to be told that the artist didn't feel comfortable doing a tattoo on a "new mom." I then walked to my appointment with the new artist nick to be called a "cockroach" and a "racist" by Chang because I wanted an explanation as to why my artist was being changed. At no point was a draft ever drawn by Chang or nick. So don't bother wasting your time with them. Also their office manager (Mona) allows her artist to act this way explaining "artist pride." And that Chang (after my consult and payment, 3 weeks prior) day of did not feel comfortable drawing dog tattoos. My original consult was for "Chang or nick," in which case the studio provided me with Chang who did a consult took my money, to cancel day of 10 mins prior to my appointment. To then blame on me because "you have a baby." Take your money elsewhere, especially if you are a mother. The right thing to do would have been, hey, we aren't ready for your tattoo. Can you come back next week with Nick? Instead of trying to cancel day of. Also a sketch was NEVER DRAWN UP. Also they tried to reimburse me pagrtial payment until I showed them a total Venmo payment. Good luck! read more

Tony's skill is unmatched. Let's start there. Book with him (Anthony on the booking site) as soon as you can. His talent is IMMACULATE; cannot be denied. This past week I got my second tattoo from him and everyone that I've shown couldn't believe how clean his lines are. Tony makes you want to come for the tattoo, but stay for the company. It was a pain-free experience for me due to his feather touch with the needle and conversation came naturally. Tony seems like a genuine person that cares deeply about his passion as well as the vision of his clients as well. He takes his time with his work and be ensured that he will take his time with you. If you are looking for someone that is humble, patient, and dedicated to you from the moment you sit in the chair, Tony is the artist for you. To continue, my previous tattoo from Tony healed up perfectly and I'm positive this one will too. Healing over time was a huge concern of mine especially since I have melanated skin. With that being said, my two year old tattoo is EVERYTHING I wanted it to be and so is my newest one. Despite this only being my second tattoo from Tony I've been suggesting him to my friends and family for the past two years because of how precise, delicate, and personal the experience is. While you may be wondering about the price of my tattoo, I wholeheartedly believe my tattoo was priced reasonably as I prefer to support creatives that know their worth. Tony knows his worth and has clients like myself that want to invest in fine body art. A reputation is great, but talent is undeniable. He has both.
